Children enlightened about their rights and fire safetyin memory of a grade 3 learner from umkhathizwe primary school who died in a fire last year, stakeholders, the community and schools held a safety awareness campaign.The event was held at Sam Ntuli stadium as part of celebrating the Child Protection week. Umkhathizwe Primary School, Maphanzela Primary School and Setsing Primary School grade 6 and 7 Soul Buddies were part of the event. Government Communications Information Centre, Department of Social Development Thokoza branch, Love Life, Ekurhuleni Disaster Emergency management services, Ekurhuleni Metro Police and Thokoza Police Station representatives educated the learners on their rights and responsibilities, fire fighting skills and abuse. Tinyiko Molefe, Government communications Officer said, “Children are vulnerable to

abuse and when they know their rights they are able to identify abuse. We are educating them on the channels to be followed to report abuse incidents.”Metro police taught the pupils about the importance of observing road signs to avoid accidents. They were also reminded that the pavements are strictly for pedestrians and ey that they should refrain from playing in the middle of the road.Ekurhuleni Fire Public Informing Education Relationship representative taught the pupils to be vigilant when using heaters, paraffin stoves, candles and fire braziers (mbawula) during the winter. They were told not to leave these items unattended to avoid fires or loss of lives. Whenever they are using fire braziers they should make sure that the doors are open to reduce carbon monoxide and when done they should take them outside the house.

I decided to redirect my energy on selling wedding gowns,” said Gam-ble.Despite the alarm-ing rate of divorce incidents, she said young generations grow up and they also want to be mar-ried like their prede-

cessors. That is why there is always a niche for wedding dresses. “Most of the dresses we have in our shop are imported from overseas. Betty Phindile Sikosana known as “Maphindi’s” the owner of Maphindi’s Day Care Centre celebrated her 53 years birthday with the pupils at the centre.Parents were also invited to feast and have a slice of cake with their children and Maphin-di’s. Children sang and danced birthday songs for their teacher. Speaking to tame TIMES, Maphindi’s said, “I have chosen to celebrate my birthday with the children at the centre because they are the reason of where l am today. I am appreciating the children and parent’s support. I encourage both par-ents to show their children love, as children are a blessing from God.” Her love for children is taken from a biblical version which is also her motto which says, ‘Vumelani abantwana beze kimi ngoba um-buso ka Maphindi’s ungowabo’. “As we are celebrating the child protection week, we are praying for the girls who are abducted in Ni-geria seeking their release. We are advocat-ing for people to show love and respect for children,” said Maphindi’s. She has created permanent employment for two women around the community and one temporary handyman. The centre is situated in number 537 Serema Street, Mpilisweni at Thokoza. It was opened in February 2007 and caters for 51 children from 2 to 6 years-old. The centre is also op-erating as a non-profitable organisation by handing out food to less fortunate people around the community.

The Nashua Children’s Charity Founda-tion (NCCF) recently visited five char-ity organisations that they assist around Kathorus to assess how they were faring and to find out the special requirements they will need over the coming months.The visit was targeting 10 organisations around Ekurhuleni and in Kathorus they visit-ed ; Fountain Of Love in Katlehong, Caroline’s Care Safe House and Crèche in Spruitview,

Pelonomi Pre-Cum Crèche in Vosloorus, Phutanang Safe Home in Vosloorus, Maphin-di’s Day Care Centre in Thokoza.“The NCCF tries to visit all the charities we provide aid to as often as possible to see how they are getting on and how else the NCCF can help the children belonging to the chari-ties under our care. It is vital that we visit all the assisted NCCF charities so to keep up to date on their needs and changes. We want to ensure that they are operating in keeping with the standards that we based our initial support on,” said Helen Fraser, Director of

the NCCF.“Besides that, it is also hugely rewarding to be greeted at our charities with warm wel-comes, hugs and in some cases even song and dance routines performed by the chil-dren and caregivers to express their grati-tude. Many of the charities we provide aid for have openly said to us that they would not be able to care for the children they do without our support,” said Fraser.The NCCF runs as a “sustainable living” foundation, which means that the NCCF vis-its the charities that appeal to them for help

and assesses their individual needs. The Foundation then tries to provide for those charities in a way that promotes sustaina-ble living and improves the lives of the chil-

dren in a meaningful way instead of merely handing over a cheque and leaving the chari-ties to fend for themselves.As such, the NCCF has provided everything from tables, chairs and educational wall charts to multi-function printers, laptops and PCs to groceries, cleaning materials and even a new oven. Added to that, the NCCF is assisting Maphindi’s Day Care Centre to practically rebuild the entire centre after it all but collapsed recently.With more visits planned for the year and a number of special events including outings and charity shopping sprees, scheduled for later this year, 2014 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the NCCF and its charities.

The Thokoza Police Station officers had a hectic weekend in their bid to enforce the law within their jurisdiction area. According to the cop shop spokesperson, Godfrey Ma-ditsi, three males suspects were arrested in connection with the murder incident which happened at Impilisweni Infor-mal settlement in May.“We have received a tip off from the community which played a pivotal role in the arrest of the three suspects.” Captain Maditsi further warned about the syndicate which tar-gets foreign national shops oper-ating in the township. He said there is gang of criminals who often breaks the roof or the shop wall of foreign national to gain force entry and rob the shop occupants. “There have been several cases of similar kind being reported and

they urge the community to in-form the police if they notice in-cidents where foreign shops had been broken into especially at night,” explained Maditsi. Maditsi said eight suspects are arrested in connection with as-sault cases and one suspect for shoplifting. He said one suspect was arrested for robbery and murder and a suspect was placed behind bars for theft of motor ve-hicle. He said four suspects were also arrested for theft. “Police have recovered stolen vehicle and large amount of liquor confiscated from three il-legally operating sheebens in Thokoza,” concluded Maditsi.

Local karate athletes stole the limelight at the second Shorin Kempo Karate tournament held in Thokoza Auditorium recently. Speaking to tame TIMES the event organiser Thulani Sibisi said they were impressed by the Katlehong based Sensei Mandla Ndlela who obtained second spot in the 55 kilogram category. “He displayed incredible

karate skills which impressed the judges.” Another local athlete who displayed a five star performance was Phumlani Zungu. He fought against one of the strongest contenders in the tournament and won the number one spot in the 65 kilogram category,” said Sibisi.The tournament started at 11:30 am and ended at 11pm. The tournament was attended by karate athletes from all over the country, as well as from neighbouring states and overseas. He applauded the fans for converging in numbers on the event.

Club coach, Essop Jevan is appealing for sponsorship to assist four aspiring hockey team members to compete in the national tournament to be held in Bloemfontein.According to Jevan, the tournament kick-starts on 29 June and runs until 5 July where Under 13 hockey teams countrywide will compete against each other. “The competition consists of male and female categories. The four athletes without sponsorship are Ryan Herman, Bradley Petersen, Lorenzo Bock and Eathan Mthombeni,” said Jevan.He said they are looking for sponsorship in terms of funds, player’s kits and equipment.
