Gladstone Zide, ward 53 councillor, and his ward committee members were attacked and beaten by so- called angry ward residents who are demanding that the councillor and his committee step down.The residents claim that the councillor has failed to deliver services to the ward. Zide and his ward committee members were attacked during the public meeting called by him at Bhekela squatter camp. Zide was seriously beaten and his arm was broken. Nomvula Maripa of the ward committee was also wounded on the head. Madodandile Kanda, another w a r d committee member,

suffered injuries to his stomach that

required an operation and 13 days in hospital.

The house of Ntombi Nkosi, yet another ward committee member, was torched by the angry mob in the ward. Michael Bhekithemba Mavuso, community leader and chairperson of EFF in ward 53 and Jimmy Coetzee were the only two people that were arrested for the incident. The two accused appeared at Palm Ridge Court on 30 March, 8 and 14 April. The case was postponed and bail applications were denied. The supporters of the accused marched and protested outside the court demanding the accused be granted bail.Funeka Adams, one of the protesters said, “We have had enough of Zide -

he is intimidating people and only allowing ANC members to participate in the

meeting. He told the residents that they are nothing and he was beaten by them. Zide ran to a shack where he was caught and severely beaten. The police were called and only two leaders were arrested, while they were not the only ones who beat Zide and his committee.”Adams said they want Mavuso and Coetzee to be granted bail. “We have heard that Mavuso was beaten in prison and spent two days in hospital. We are appealing for bail to be granted to them because they might be killed in prison.”Mampuru Mampuru, chairperson of EFF Ekurhuleni said, “It is unfortunate in that the government is playing a wrestling game with the community. One of the

They are eliminating activists so that they can do as they wish.” Gladstone Zide, ward 53 councillor said, “We were attacked by a combination of alliances - EFF, NFP, DA and UDM - who are disrupting the schools, public meetings and service delivery. We are going to oppose the bail application.” He added that he does not discriminate against people in his ward. “They are making the ward ungovernable. Mavuso followed me to the shack were l had hidden. He hit me with a stone and his accomplice also beat me. Mavuso later said ‘Fighters finish all’,” said Zide.

Global warming is one of the factors that affect the environment and, in an attempt to reduce it, Transnet has partnered with Thokoza Youth Crime Prevention Desk and Thokoza Community Policing Forum (CPF) in planting trees around Thokoza Community Centre, which is situated next to Angus train station.They planted four trees in the area. The Ekurhuleni Metro is seeking community comments on the draft of the Integrated budget and Development Plan (IDP).Integrated development planning is a process through which munici-palities prepare a strategic development plan which extends over a fi v e-year period. This then guides and informs all planning, budgetting, management and decision-making processes in the municipality. Residents of Ekurhuleni and various other stakeholders will have an opportunity to comment on the developmental programme of the Metro as contained in the IDP for 2015/16 and the Budget for the next three years. The municipality undertook a consultative process on the review of its Integrated Development Plan with ward councillors and ward committee members in September last year. The inputs received through the consultative process formed the basis of the draft IDP 2015/16 and draft multi-year Budget for 2015/16 - 2017/18 that were tabled at the Council meeting on 29 January 2015 for the purpose of consultation with stakeholders. Before the draft IDP and draft Budget are approved by Council in May 2015, the acceptability of the proposals must be tested with the communities. As from 14 to 22 April, Ekurhuleni will hold IDP and Budget meetings in all its 20 Customer Care Areas at 18:00 pm to discuss the draft

documents with communities. Council will brief stakeholders on the proposed developmental programme and allow communities to comment on the proposals. Proposed new tariffs, the

new valuation roll, credit control and indigent benefi ts as well as budget proposals related to capital projects across the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality

are expected to dominate discussions at the Metro’s Draft Integrated Development and Planning (IDP) and Budget public consultative meetings to be held over the next two weeks. This year, these IDP and Budget meetings will also be combined with the Mayoral Izimbizo to give progress reports on service delivery issues. Over and above these meetings, stakeholders can, from now until April 30, access the draft IDP and draft Budget documents which are open for comment. These can be viewed electronically at any time on www.ekurhuleni.gov.za; or at public libraries, pay points and Customer Care Centres during offi ce hours. Comments can be fi lled in and dropped into “Budget Tips” boxes at the above-mentioned offi ces or emailed to [email protected]. The illegal loan shark industry that is mushrooming in our townships contributes significantly to the mysterious deaths that so often take place in hidden corners. It was these strange and tragic occurrences that inspired Black Dog Records owner John Mthembu to write and produce a short film titled “Crime Doesn’t Pay.”According to Mthembu, the short film is about one hour long and was shot at Eden Park Township in Ekurhuleni. The lead actor is played by Glen Vilakazi, who plays a character called Zakes. “Zakes became an orphan from a young age because his mother could not pay the debt to the local loan shark, who shot her dead. The youngster grew up in a tough environment; crime was the only resort that Zakes could turn to for survival. Despite the challenges Zakes encountered in life, revenge was of paramount importance to him and he devoted his life to accomplishing his mission,” said Mthembu. All the actors are from Eden Park and they were given an acting workshop by the Black Dog Records crew before they shot the movie. Mthembu is optimistic that there is a great deal of untapped talent in the township that needs to be nurtured. He cited that township films have been ignored, and that township film-makers need to co-operate to achieve success. He said a considerable amount of money and training should be invested in the township film-making industry for it to be on a par with its peers. CRIME DOESN’T PAY: This short film puts the lives of loan sharks on the screen.

ImfuTree, a Thokoza based company, hosted a fun walk campaign in Thokoza as part of celebrating Human Rights Month.The initiative was themed “my Voice, my Right” and the youth were educated and informed about their rights and responsibilities. The fun walk commenced at the corner of Khumalo and Yende Streets, proceeded via Nkaki Street and the walkers finally rested at the Thokoza monument. ImfuTree members also donated bread to needy dwellers of Tintwa informal settlement during their fun walk campaign.Speaking to tame TIMES, Kaizer Tshehla, co-founder of ImfuTree, said, “We were celebrating Human Rights Month by raising awareness among the children about their basic rights, such as the right to education and health. We want to make sure that the children are protected and educate the community that it is their right to protect the children.”He added that they donated bread as a way to give back to the community. ImfuTree is a youth company founded by youth with a mission to assist young people to acquire skills through workshops and seminars.

Phumulani Sisilana from Phola Park was found guilty at Palm Ridge Court last month for murdering Nkosana Lavisa of the same neighbourhood over a dispute about Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs soccer clubs.Sisilana was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment, of which 15 years was for murder and three years was for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm - which was directed at Siyabulela Madyungu, a friend of the deceased.Detective Warrant Officer Mbuyiselo Mofokeng said the incident happened on 25 May 2013 in Phola Park. “The deceased, Nkosana Lavisa, and his friend Siyabulela

Madyungu, were having an argument with another friend over the two favourite Premier Soccer Leagues clubs: Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. It was two against one, Nkosana Lavisa and Siyabulela Madyungu fought the other friend and he ran to his brother’s place to hide,” said Mofokeng.“As the two turned back, heading to their places, the brother of the friend who ran away, Phumulani Sisilana, came from behind and stabbed Nkosana Lavisa and he passed away on the scene. He also assaulted Siyabulela Madyungu and was taken to Natalspruit Hospital for the treatment of his injuries,” said Mofokeng.

He said Sisilana ran back to his place thinking that he had not been seen by anyone, but an eyewitness informed the police that he saw him stabbing the two friends and running away. “We went to the suspect’s place and he was arrested the same day. He was charged with murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Sisilana appeared at Palm Ridge Court the following day, and the case was postponed for further investigations and the bail application process. He was on trial until on 27 March, when he was found guilty and finally sentenced,” concluded Mofokeng.

LONG ARM OF THE LAW: Detective Warrant Officer Mbuyiselo Mofokeng investigated the murder case and made sure that justice took its course.

A driver was arrested in a drunken stupor on Saturday morning after losing control of his vehicle and crashing into the concrete palisade fencing of Huntersfield Stadium.A call came through to the EMPD about the incident and a Loss Control & Investigations Unit member rushed to the scene and found the inebriated driver slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle, oblivious to what had happened. Extensive damage

was caused to the fencing, as well as to the culprit’s vehicle.Fortunately, the 36-year-old driver came out unscathed from the accident. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and damaging of Council property. The case was registered at Katlehong North Police Station and he is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

Palm Ridge High Court sentenced two assassins to life sentences after they were found guilty of a murder that was committed in Voslooorus Hostel last year. According to Vosloorus Warrant Officer Phofene Alfred Mbede, relatives Sakhile, Sinuses and Nkosinathi Buthelezi were walking to Vosloorus Hostel to buy food. Said Mbede, “The three well known suspects Mthokoziseni Maphisa (29), Bongani Wiseman Mthanga Ndima (28) and their accomplice (who is known by the police) shot Nkosinathi Buthelezi and died on the scene. The two other brothers escaped. And the motive of the killing is not known by the police.” On 9 June last year, Ndima, one of the suspects, was finally arrested in Hillbrow after being followed by the police investigation team. Mbede said he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and police conducted ballistic testing which

linked the gun to a murder case in Vosloorus Hostel. The second suspect was also arrested for the same murder case and they both appeared in Palm Ridge High Court from 18 February to 25 March.“Ndima was sentenced to 15 years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and a further three years for possession of ammunition. The suspect was further sentenced to life in prison for murder. Maphisa was sentenced to life in prison for murder. Police investigations further linked Maphisa with several murder cases. The suspect is expected to appear before the magistrate. The third suspect, who is known to the police, is still at large,” explained Mbede. Vosloorus spokesperson Captain Piet Rossouw warned that people who might be responsible for the hiring of the two killers would also be charged. He warned criminals that crime does not pay.

Two Mozambican males, aged 42 and 45, were arrested in Thokoza Unit F in connection with recent incidents of house-breaking and theft in Vereeniging.Constable Patrick Mashiane, spokesperson of Thokoza Police Station, said the two suspects broke into a house in Vereeniging on Saturday around 3am or 4am and took two laptops, one iPad and a 35cm plasma LED display. “The police from Vereeniging received the information from the complainant. The iPad had a tracking device that was traced in Thokoza. Vereeniging police alerted Thokoza police officers, who responded

immediately to a certain house in Thokoza Unit F where two males were found in possession of two laptops and an iPad phone,” said Mashiane.He said two suspects were arrested and one of them confirmed that the goods were stolen in Vereeniging. The suspect led the police to a bush where they recovered the hidden plasma television. “The two suspects appeared in Palm Ridge Court, facing charges of possession of stolen property. Another case of house-breaking and theft was opened in Vereeniging. The suspects will be linked to other house-breaking cases,” said Mashiane.

The police will investigate the missing person’s case immediately. People can assist the SAPS when reporting a missing person by following these steps:o THERE IS NO WAITING PERIOD TO REPORT A MISSING PERSON! Report a missing person at your nearest police station immediately.o Produce a recent photograph of the missing person, if possible.o Give a complete description of the missing person’s last whereabouts, the clothes that they were wearing, as well as any information that can assist the investigating offi cer.o Complete and sign a SAPS 55(A) form. People seem to think that the 10111 police emergency number is a general public inquiry service hotline. They think that it will be easy for SAPS to fi nd a long lost lover or estranged family member by making a false report of a missing person.According to Captain Piet Rossouw, Communication Offi cer of Vosloorus Police Station, however, “It puts a tremendous workload and cost on the police to attend to hoax calls and reports. The police appeal to the community to refrain from doing hoaxes as they will be liable to prosecution when caught.”He said in the police’s 2013/14 report tabled in Parliament, which covers the period from April 2013 to the end of March 2014, just over two-thirds of the 7 648 975 calls to 10111 were hoaxes, nuisance and abusive calls or enquiries about personal or service delivery matters. Rossouw said only about 32.1 percent (2 456 187) were police-related.Although the overall number of 10111 calls declined by almost one-and-a-half million from 9 122 688, the percentage of police-related calls increased from 29 percent in 2012/13.Rossouw says there are 22 10111 call centres countrywide connecting 475 police stations to the emergency response system and there are 1 137 police stations. To communicate directly with the people and their own employees, the police record an average of 200 Tweets a month, do 1 671 public education and awareness campaigns, and make 34 episodes of the When Duty Calls television series.

Dawn Park police detectives are looking for the family or relatives of the unknown woman who was founded murdered at Mulberton plots near Dawn Park on 10 January 2015. The deceased was aged between 30 and 35 years, and was found next to Nigel Road by a local passerby who alerted the police offi cers. The casualty had a gunshot wound and

bruises on her body. A case of murder was opened at Dawn Park Police Station. The corpse of the deceased is at Germiston government mortuary and is still unclaimed. Detective Constable Tshepo Mathebe is appealing to community members who are looking for a missing person or who know the family of the deceased to come forward. The Katlehong cluster police stations conducted an ‘Operation Paseka’ under the N3 Bridge in Barry Marais Road in Vosloorus a day before the Easter holidays. It was a two-hour road safety campaign during which the police were looking for stolen goods, drugs and unlicensed firearms.

Thokoza Police Station officers arrested three suspects from 8 to 9 April 2015 for various offences during the daily stop-and-search operation conducted by crime prevention members. April is a significant month, not only for the residents of Ekurhuleni (as it is Chris Hani Month) but for the nation as well, as it is also Freedom Month.Last week we celebrated the 22nd commemoration of the death of Chris Hani and Ekurhuleni residents were delighted that their own hero’s grave was declared a national heritage site by President Jacob Zuma at Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Boksburg. The acknowledgement of hero’s graves, such as the one of Chris Hani, is important, as he contributed to the democracy that we are enjoying today. On 27 April we will also be celebrating Freedom Day and people will be reminded what is meant by freedom and what contributed to their freedom. There are many people who abuse their freedom or take it for granted, while others treasure it. It is very important to understand our freedom and appreciate those who played a significant role in making sure that we enjoy its fruits today.This fortnight we have interesting news of the pantsula dancers who won Kathorus’s Got Talent, Ekurhuleni residents are invited to voice their opinions on Integrated Development and Planning (IDP) and there are details of crime stories around Kathorus. We are also giving our readers an opportunity to send their views, opinion pieces and comments on issues happening around their neighbourhood. These contributions will be published in the newspaper. CHRIS HANI REMEMBEREDPresident Jacob Zuma declared Martin Thembisile ‘Chris’ Hani’s grave a national heritage site at Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park, Boksburg on 10 April. The event coincides with the 22nd commemoration of the death of Hani.President Zuma also unveiled the Chris Hani Memorial and Walk of Remembrance Monument. The wife of the late Chris Hani, Dimpho Hani, and other dignitaries, laid wreaths at the grave-site.“This celebrated leader of the ANC and SACP and our people as a whole, and a soldier and chief of staff of Umkhonto Wesizwe, dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom, equality, justice, human dignity and a better life for all the people of South Africa,” said Zuma, addressing the crowd during the launch.He added that the 22nd anniversary of the commemoration of Hani’s death took place during an important year, the year of the Freedom Charter. Chris Hani believed in the Freedom Charter, the President said, and quoted the following words by Hani: “It was important to have an ANC which accepted the Freedom Charter, which committed itself to the implementation of the Freedom Charter. And we felt that the Freedom Charter was a revolutionary document in terms of the struggle for national liberation and democracy.”The President further urged people to continue working hard to deepen and

consolidate democracy in the country as a memory to Hani, “and also deepen the extension of services to all, especially the poor and the working class.”Hani’s commemoration day was attended by many political and union leaders, such as Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education and Training and the General Secretary of the SACP; Thulas Nxesi, Public

Pre-winter safety campaign launched

Instead of putting out a fire, emergency services set a shack on fire during the launch of the Ekurhuleni Pre-Winter Fire Safety campaign at Gugulethu/Everest informal settlement in Springs. The annual fire safety awareness campaign, themed “Call us in time, We arrive on time,” will be held to re-educate residents about fire safety ahead of the approaching winter season when paraffin stoves, liquefied petroleum gas heaters and braziers (imbawula) will be used to keep warm. Tumelo Lephosa, a resident from Angelo informal settlement who is a member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), said the demonstration involving a burning shack made the message more

tangible for residents who attended the launch. “After seeing us in action today, the community understands the role we play and how they can assist us in extinguishing such fires using the bucket brigade system instead of standing in a crowd and watching someone’s home burn to ashes,” he said. The 649 CERT members who were present at the launch have been deployed to be the first in line to respond to fire incidents in all 119 informal settlements within the City of Ekurhuleni, while emergency response officials make their way to a scene. “The number of shack fire fatalities and injuries in Ekurhuleni has dropped since 2008. That is a clear indication that the pre-winter fire safety campaigns and the efforts of

the Community Emergency Response Teams go a long way in saving lives,” said Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety Clr Vivian Chauke. In closing, the MMC urged the CERT members who have been trained in first aid, basic fire fighting, bucket fire brigading, disaster reduction and public education, to impart their knowledge to other community members so that everyone will be able to help put out the flames in the event of a fire. The fire safety awareness campaign will run until the end of August, when the Ekurhuleni Emergency and Disaster Management Services team will visit informal settlements across the city and educate them on precautions to take to avoid fires and what to do in the event of a fire breaking out.

Eden Park based Somasikisiki Maskandi music group has released their second album dubbed Somasikisiki Simenzeleni and is anticipated that it will leave music-lovers spellbound. The 12-track Maskandi album was recorded in Studio 2088 in downtown Johannesburg. According to the group’s leader Ayabonga Mpika, some of the best tracks coming from the album are Nifuna Semenzeleni, Uzongezani, Isiginqi Sami and Bazalibami. “The album will be available on the market early next month. Our music group consists of four singers - Mlungisi Ntombela, Mthokozisi Sangweni, Sphephelo Ncwane and myself,” explained Mpika.

The group was founded in 2010 and they released their debut album dubbed Somasikisiki Wenza Lukhulu. Their debut album was a flop, but they are optimistic that their second offering will erase the bad memories of their first music project. “Our long-term goal is to grow bigger in the music industry like our role models Shwi and Nomtekhala. It would be a great pleasure one day to share the stage with these great Maskandi music legends. Their music is timeless and it cuts across cultural boundaries,” concluded Mpika.

The Thokoza based Black Dog Records company has recently released their latest short film called “My sister’s wife,” which is raising awareness on the acceptance and denial of lesbians in families.Speaking to tame TIMES, the movie producer John Mthembu said the film is about 45 minutes long. “It is about the conservative father of a lesbian woman called Sazi who did not accept that his daughter was a lesbian. The family is split between the supportive mother and the conservative father who did not accept the wedding of his daughter,” said Mthembu. The brother of Sazi is originally from the rural parts of Kwa-Zulu Natal and is amazed by the fact that his sister has become a lesbian after she relocated to Thokoza. The conservative man is finally seduced by the wife of Sazi and impregnates her, which spoils the relationship between the siblings. The message this movie is sending out to the public is that people should not discriminate against gays and lesbians. “We should start accepting people for who they are. People are independent and we should not expect that they would live the way the society expects them to,” said Mthembu.The film was shot in Thokoza and the bulk of the actors that featured in the movie are from Ekurhuleni. Black Dog Records sells their short films from the boot of a car and the money generated is split within the acting crew as part of their payment. Rise in Africa pantsula dance group won Kathorus’s Got Talent competition and walked away with R10 000 from the final event, which was held at Vosloorus Crossing Mall.The second prize of R2,500 was won by another pantsula group, Illumination Great Dancers. Rise in Africa dance group consists of two members: Mlungisi Mchunu (20) and Malifetsane Thaba (22). Mchunu is a renowned pantsula dancer who won the Jika Majika dance competition television show aired on SABC 1 twice in 2010 and in early January this year.Speaking to tame TIMES, Mlungisi Mchunu said, “We are delighted that we won and we have learned that patience pays in the end. We have lost all our group members and only two of us are left because there was no income coming in.” He said they will use the money to register their group as a non-profit organisation, to buy a camera and dance costumes. “I encourage young people who are passionate about dancing to participate in the local dancing competitions to nurture their talents,” said Mchunu.Azona Sobantu, Director of Illumination Great Dancers (IGD), said it was the first time their group won a Kathorus dance competition and they would use the money to buy dance costumes. “We are happy and privileged in that our work is appreciated by the community. We also encourage other young stars to continue showcasing

The Easter holidays are remembered for Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, but Thokoza football fans will also always remember the Zondo’s Easter Holidays Tournament for the beautiful soccer game dished out by local teams at Thokoza Extension Two Soccer Grounds. A total of 20 local teams took part in Zondo’s Easter Soccer Tournament organised by Zondo Driving School owner Buti Zondo in partnership with (TLFA) Thokoza Local Football Association (TLFA). Speaking to tame TIMES, Zondo cited that the tournament’s objective was to unearth aspiring soccer players that would put Thokoza on the map. “We are excited that the tournament played a vital role in decreasing rampant crime mostly happening during the Easter Holidays. The tournament, which started on Good Friday and ended on Easter Monday, saw about 40,000 to 50, 000 soccer fans descending on the soccer ground to watch the beautiful game from day one. Teams that took part did not disappoint in their endeavour to win the R20 000 first prize,” explained Zondo. Aston Villa FC won the final match 2-0 against their rivals Snacks FC. Sakhile Gule, the captain of Aston Villa FC, was voted the player of the tournament, while

prolific Snacks FC striker Mandla “Mayoyo” Nhlapho was voted top goal-scorer of the tournament. Green Stars FC’s Yandisa Bushula was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament. The three top-performing players will each be given free driving lessons at Zondo’s Driving School; and soccer fans who supported the tournament will get a 50 percent discount when they register for tuition at Zondo’s Driving School this month. The winning coach, Jukes Seola, said it was for the first time they had defeated their rivals. “The opponents were good, especially with ball possession; however, we know their strengths and weaknesses. We applied counter-attack measures at all times and it worked for us. My boys neutralised the opponent’s leading goal-scorer and we also attacked them from the wings. The standard of the tournament has improved tremendously this year,” said Seola.Both teams competing in the finals received soccer kits; the losing team pocketed R10 000 and the winning team walked home R20 000 richer.
