One of Ekurhuleni’s historical monuments, and a place where the heroes and heroines of the struggle were born, will soon be flattened according to a recent public announcement made by Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu at Thokoza Auditorium. “We have the records that show that the old Natalspruit Hospital was built on a dolomite site,” she said. “The hospital had cracks that were also refurbished and a decision was taken for an alternative site which was found in Vosloorus where the new hospital has been built. We are going to demolish the old Natalspruit Hospital. On 18 August will be moving the patients to the new hospital, and no patients will be discharged prematurely. Transport has been organised and there will be alternative accommodation for interns and doctors at Windmill Park and Villa Lisa.” She said the building will be decontaminated before being demolished and members of the community will be welcome to come and search for second-hand building materials there. Mahlangu said after the land has been cleared they will engage with other departments to find out how it can be used, but that no health facility will be built in the area. “We will engage with other departments to discuss the issue of taxis and hawkers,” continued the MEC. “We will also consult with the community to find out if there is a need to change the name of the hospital, as it was reported that the signage of Natalspruit Hospital had been erased in Vosloorus. The hospital will be officially opened on 28 August,” said Mahlangu. There was a mixed reaction from community members, leaders, stakeholders and non- profit organisations. The major concern was that the legacy of the hospital would be demolished with the building; they stated that they were not even given supporting documents showing that the area was dolomitic. The community is also concerned with the capacity of the new hospital; they said that it is small compared to the old one. Transport fares to Vosloorus was another one of the challenges mentioned by local residents, and hawkers and taxi associations were also concerned about losing business due to the relocation of the hospital. In conclusion, Papi Papi, Deputy Chairperson of Katlehong Local AIDS Council said, “We are fighting a losing battle, because the politicians have agreed what they want to do. We, however, would like to build something on the land where the hospital was located to bring back the legacy of Natalspruit Hospital.” Volume 03, 14 August 2014, Week 33 www.tametimes.co.za Tel: 011 862 8500 Fax: 011 869 7335 Becoming the voice of Ekurhuleni WINNER OF THE 2012 & 2013 EKURHULENI AWARDS: BEST PRINT MEDIA tame TIMES Thokoza, Palm Ridge, Eden Park Old Natalspruit Hospital to be demolished READY FOR DEMOLITION: The old Natalspruit Hospital’s days are numbered. Cheers for now. Charity Moyo

Welcome, everyone, to the month of August, when we honour and celebrate the lives of women who have contributed to the country’s democracy. It is the time when we show love and appreciation for women who are doing positive things in our communities. There are many activities taking place around Kathorus, with women celebrating the month by helping those who are less fortunate or by hosting seminars to motivate each another. We have many interesting stories in this

edition, including the mixed reactions from the community and various stakeholders about the relocation of the Old Natalspruit Hospital to the newly built hospital in Vosloorus. The official opening of the new hospital will be on 28

August and there are plans to demolish the old hospital building. To find out more about what is happening around the community of Kathorus, read your copy of tame TIMES. Send your comments regarding the issue of Natalspruit Hospital to: [email protected]

Mandela Day is all about helping to change lives for the better, and employees at Henkel South Africa have been doing exactly that. They have put together 67 hampers with Pritt stationery, colouring-books and treats for the Tamaho Child Care Centre in Thokoza. The hampers represent the 67 years that Madiba devoted to making a difference and were presented to the crèche on Friday 1 August. The company also donated musical and sporting toys, as well as puzzles to the school. The crèche – an initiative of Henkel South Africa – has become an integral part of the community. With its head office in Alrode and almost 65% of its employees living in the area, the company is committed to supporting this community. It started Tamaho almost six years ago after realising the need for a fully equipped child-care centre in Thokoza. At the handover, employees played games with the children. Mr Pritt, one of South Africa’s most loved characters, also attended and ensured smiles all around. “Mandela Day offers people an opportunity to embrace a culture of taking responsibility for changing the lives of those around them – for the better,” says Tracy Mitchley,

Marketing Communications Manager at Henkel South Africa.“It promotes selfless acts of kindness throughout the world, empowering people and communities to improve their lives and make positive changes for their future. This year we’re once again confirming our commitment to Tamaho and giving tomorrow’s leaders the best start in life.”

Thirty learners of Nqubela Primary School in Thokoza will never come to school again in torn school shoes or sneakers, as Thokoza police officers have just donated 30 pairs of brand new school shoes to less fortunate learners at the school. The learners were very excited about their new school shoes. Nashley Hamandawana, a grade 3 learner who benefited from the donations, said, “I am happy that I have a new pair of school shoes. I was not feeling good with my torn shoes, as other learners used to laugh at me.”Pinky Mbele, the principal of Nqubela Primary School, said, “We are delighted with the donations, because we had a challenge of learners who had torn shoes. This donation is a relief as some learners are from underprivileged backgrounds, and their parents cannot afford to buy them shoes. The police officers also educated the learners about the consequences of crime, about bullying and how carrying dangerous weapons can lead them to prison.” Meanwhile, Captain Godfrey Maditsi, Communications Officer of Thokoza Police Station said, “We are making a difference in the lives of children - the donations were a gesture of the police’s goodwill. It was also part of Mandela Day that we should assist those who are in need of help.”

Careful driving saves lives

Jacob Zwane is a first-time car owner but his extensive driving experience over three decades makes him stand head and shoulders above debutante drivers. Speaking to tame TIMES, Zwane said he is passionate about responsible driving because it saves lives on the road. When did you start driving?I started driving a car in the early 1970s and worked as a driver for more than three decades. How was it driving in the 1970s compared to today’s driving? It was a bad driving experience because most of the township roads were not tarred. However, we did stick to road regulations. We did not have the alarming road carnage that we have today. What is your favourite car brand? My favourite car brand is Toyota. What do you like about it?Its (Toyota) mechanical parts are affordable and its fuel consumption is good. It is the most trusted brand on the road that has stood the test of time. What car are you currently driving?I am driving a Ford Laser Tracer.

What do you like about it?It also has good fuel consumption compared to most other cars.Has your car ever let you down? This is one of the most reliable cars. It takes me to my destination without any hindrances. Have you ever been involved in a car accident?I never had been involved in a car accident since I started driving, but young drivers who started driving recently have been in more than one already. They should remember that speed kills. Young motorists should not hurry, because they will finally arrive at their destination.

The lives of teenage mothers are usually turned upside down after pregnancy and their career ambitions, more often than not, take a turn for the worse. Twenty-four-year-old mother Kamogelo Sethono, however, did not allow early motherhood to deter her from attaining her long held dream. Speaking to tame TIMES, Sethono said when she first found out about her pregnancy, she thought her whole world and all her dreams had been shattered forever. “However, the experience brought me a new dimension in life that initially I didn’t know about and my mother was supportive. I was inspired by my uncle’s wife who is a mother to three children and pursuing Honours in Computer studies,” said Sethono. She said her mother offered to help her with the child while she was studying for her Engineering Related Design (ERD) diploma

at Ekurhuleni West College on Kathorus Campus. Sethono’s mother, she says, often reminds her that education is a key that unlocks the doors of opportunity in life. “Ladies should strive to be independent,” says Sethono, “but they should first equip themselves academically. If they are unable to find employment, they should not despair but u s e the very same knowledge they have

gathered to find a job to open up business opportunities. After completing my ERD diploma, I will be able to fix either diesel

or petrol cars,” said Sethono.

Kamogelo Sethono urges women to

emancipate themselves.

It was his goal of becoming a renowned sports presenter that inspired the 24-year-old Mpho Madontsela from Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) to relocate to Gauteng earlier this year. His love for radio presenting began while he was still in Matric, and has driven him to work for more than four radio and television stations already. Speaking to tame TIMES, Madontsela described himself as a unique radio presenter who strives for exclusive stories in his programmes. “I joined Kasi Community Radio earlier this year after spending a few years broadcasting in several radio and television stations in KZN. Currently I am presenting and producing Kasi FM Sports Wave Show from 15:05 to 17:30 midweek. The show has local, national and international sports content. It also has a range of sports stories from different sporting codes. My programme informs, educates and entertains,” explained Madontsela.Madontsela believes in taking full responsibility for his entire radio show - hence he also doubles up as radio producer for Kasi FM Sports Wave Show. Listeners are impressed by the way he packages and presents his show. “The positive feedback I got from the listeners through telephone-calls, Facebook and Twitter since joining Kasi FM in April has been impressive. It shows that I have taken a step in the right direction in a short space of time,” said Madontsela. Madontsela enrolled for courses in radio production, voice-over work and sports presenting at Icesa in Durban in 2008. He landed his first sports presenting job at Imbogodo Community Radio in 2010 and later joined Nanda Community Radio as a news reader in 2011 in KZN. In 2012 he joined 1 KZN TV as a sports presenter and news reader. The following year he got another break at Zululand FM when he was hired to host Afternoon Drive.

Four aspiring golf players from Kathorus Sports Development Agency will showcase their golfing skills at the Vryburger High School Annual Golf Day to be held in Boksburg on 29 August. The four golfers are Thato Bodibe, Wynand Morudu, Rethabile Moema and Tisetso Mokoena. However, the unavailability of the necessary finance has been the main stumbling block standing in the way of their golfing debut since the formation of their golf agency in 2012. Speaking to tame TIMES, Kathorus Sports Development Agency secretary Thato Bodibe said a lack of R2000 was hindering his colleagues’ dreams of playing in the upcoming golf competition. “The R2000 we are desperately in need of would cater for the team registration fee, prizes, golf players’ dinner, refreshments and lunch on the day of the event. The willing sponsor stands a chance of advertising his or her company at a hole of their choice on the day of the tournament,” said Bodibe.Sports development agency coach Wynand Morudu said that they have been practising for a while and are ready to compete. He urged companies who are willing to donate, or assist with the registration fee of their agency in the tournament, to deposit money in: ABSA 92-9315-5354 savings account.

Contact Morudu at 08 2 058 9821 or Bodibe at 079 158 2630. READY TO COMPETE: Thato Bodibe and Wynand Morudu are preparing for the

golf tournament to be held in Boksburg on 29 August.

Fun games live up to expectations

The inaugural Lungile Mtshali Fun Sport Day held recently at Thokoza Extension 2 Soccer Grounds saw six respective wards, namely 52, 53, 54, 56, 57 and 58, battling it out to be crowned inaugural champions of the tournament. Each of the six participating soccer teams consisted of 11 football players, which included five female and six male footballers in their respective starting line-ups. Speaking to tame TIMES, the area leasing officer Fana Mdluli said the tournament is part of an endeavour to be inclusive in sport, irrespective of age or gender. “We saw the initiative as part of refreshing our bodies and an attempt to regain stamina after long working hours. Our daily job entails keeping Kathorus and the City of Ekurhuleni clean at all times. Hence, we opted for a sports day event as an opportunity to revive our strength and showcase our talent to the community. Teams were divided into two streams and the two winning teams, namely ward 57 and 54, battled it out in the final.” Ward 57 showed their intentions early in the first five minutes of the first half, when they scored their first goal. They then added another two quick goals without reply later in the second half and the final score was 3-0 in favour of ward 57. “We managed to raise a total amount of R1 400. The money raised was used for the braai, entertainment and refreshments,” concluded Mdluli.
