After breaking the hearts of their loved ones, stealing from them and losing their trust, as well as creating enemies everywhere, some drug addicts finally find themselves in need of rehabilitation.Tankiso Mashego (26) - a drug addict from Thokoza who was expelled from school while doing Grade Eight as well as an ex-convict imprisoned for armed robbery - has brought himself to Thokoza Police Station seeking to be rehabilitated. “I smoke nyaope and dagga and I want to be rehabilitated so that I will live a healthy lifestyle. I feel neglected and everyone hates me and they have lost my trust at home, as l steal from them. I want to come back from the rehabilitation and pursue a career in football.” Another drug addict, Thamusanqa Maseko (25), said, “I spent R120 per day for nyaope. l am unemployed and I am forced to steal steel and sell it at the scrapyard to earn money to buy nyaope. I am tired of my life of always looking dirty and hustling. If I don’t change, I will

end up a street kid.”Sheila Maseko, Thamusanqa’s mother said, “We are not safe with him in the house. We are always carrying our wallets because whatever he sees he takes. We are fighting with neighbours because he is stealing from them. I am glad my son is willing to change.”In mobilising willing drug addicts, Thokoza Youth Desk and Crime Prevention Unit, in partnership with Vosloorus, Eden Park, Katlehong and Zonkizizwe police stations, patrollers and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, Itireleng Foundation and Drug Free World, conducted a drug and substance abuse awareness campaign at Letsoho Mall in Thokoza.Patrick Mashiane, spokesperson for Thokoza Police Station, said the campaign will also be taken on Saturdays to Vosloorus, Eden Park, Katlehong and Zonkizizwe. “We have partnered with Itireleng Foundation that is helping in sending drug addicts to rehabilitation centres. Through this campaign we are identifying people from the community who are drug addicts and willing to be rehabilitated and the demand is very high. The rehabilitation of drug addicts will reduce the rates of theft and house-breaking crimes. This is

because they are stealing in order to sell and buy drugs.”Thamie Botsane, Director of Itireleng Foundation said, “We approached Drug Free World and they will be helping with sending drug addicts to rehabilitation centres. We proposed to identify drug addicts who are willing to be sent to rehabilitation centres and we have promised to monitor them when they are back so that they will not relapse.”

I therefore appeal to our residents and opinion makers to participate in this process because we desperately seek their views,” explains Executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele. I have had enough of people talking about their rights. Some say it’s their right to know how the government is spending their tax money, while others say it is their right to know the whereabouts of their partner and to browse through their cellphone because they are in a relationship. The question is: do people know their actual fundamental human rights, as declared by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)

and the constitution of the Republic of South Africa - as listed in our bill of rights?On 21 March it is Human Rights Day, and we will be celebrating our rights. People will be educated and made aware of their basic rights. This is because there are some people who don’t know their rights and they are some who are abusing them intentionally and some without being aware of what they are doing. It is especially important for children, women, the elderly and people with disabilities to know their rights, as they are the most vulnerable people in the society. In short, however, everyone has the right to life and access to health facilities and all children have a right to education.This fortnight we have an article from a local DJ who is educating people about their right to life. The community of Ekurhuleni is also encouraged to write in with their views regarding the State of the City address to be held on 25 March at Germiston Civic Centre. The inaugural Kathorus’s Got Talent competition kicked off two weeks back and Kathorus residents are battling it out to win the R10 000 cash prize.The competition is sponsored by Vosloorus Crossing Mall in partnership with Kasie FM and held in an open space at Vosloorus Crossing Mall. The auditions, which are held on Saturdays, commenced on 28 February, took place on 7 March and will end on 14 March. The semi-finals will be on 21 March and the finals on 28 March, when the winner will walk away with R10 000 and the second runner-up will be awarded a R2 500 cash prize.The competition is broad, targeting different talents in singing, poetry, dancing and anything else in the entertainment sector. It also targets people from all

races and age groups. Children as young as 7 years and adults as old as 73 years have come to audition for the competition. All the audition participants take home a T-shirt branded with the name of the competition and vouchers are handed out to the audition viewers as well. Jabulani Xhasa “DJ X,” one of the judges, who also represents Kasie FM, said, “We are encouraging people to participate in the competition as it will help in unearthing their talents. The challenge is that some people come for auditions because they are at the mall and we also meet a lot of people who are taking chances.” He added that all the judges work in the artistic space and are able to balance and check the talent, despite the fact that the competition in broad. “We judge according

to energy, confidence, eye contact, communication of message and the performance has to come from within the contestants,” said Xhasa.Paul Radebe, the event organiser said, “We are giving Kathorus residents an opportunity to expose their talents. Vosloorus Crossing is rallying behind local talent, hence the event is going to be conducted annually. It is also part of giving back to the community that is supporting the mall.”

Ward 53 residents want their ANC ward councillor Gladstone Velile Zide and his ward committee to step down. They claim that he has failed dismally to deliver services to the community and that he is corrupt.Residents marched to Eden Park municipality offices to hand over a memorandum of their grievances to Ekurhuleni municipality. Community leader Bhekithemba Michael Mavuso said, “Since Zide took over the office in 2011, he never served the interests of the people. We elected Zide into the office and we want to exercise our rights to remove him. He is doing nothing to help us - there are people who applied for RDP houses in 1997 and 2008 and are still on the waiting list. There is a challenge of sewer and drainage blockages and no taxi rank in the area. We have sent many petitions to the Mayor and Speaker of Ekurhuleni without tangible success.” Khuthazwa Maba, a resident said, “There are no tarred roads in Greenfields. Zide hires his friends and relatives whenever there are construction and employment opportunities in the ward. The clinic is small and is a health hazard, with sewer blockages.Lindilizwe Mayezane, another resident said, “There are no parks for children to play in and no library in the ward. He makes us pay

R400 per event to conduct youth activities at the community hall.”The angry residents demanded a response within 24 hours and said that Zide should hand over the office keys with immediate effect. Zeni Tshongweni, MMC of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, received the memorandum and said they would respond within 14 days. “I don’t want to lie to you that you will get a response in 24 hours - you have to wait for 14 days. We need to sit down with the relevant departments and address the matters raised. I don’t have powers to remove Zide from the office because he is not hired by me,” said Tshongweni.

No longer residing eKasie, but still proud and passionate about their township roots, a group of about six males, who were born and bred in Thokoza but have since moved out, recently came together with the local residents to clean the area.They came with their cleaning tools and donations from their work places and local businesses, and were supported and assisted by community members. Some came to clean and others helped with donations. Together they cleaned the streets in the following sections in Thokoza: Phenduka, Ebasutwini, Thokoza Gardens and Vergenoeg Extension 1. Siphiwe Masawu said they have also opened a Facebook Page called: “Thokoza Ikasilama kasi 426.” He told tame TIMES, “We meet with other guys through this page and we decided to conduct this cleaning campaign. We will continuously educate our fellow Thokoza residents to keep the environment clean by refraining from illegal dumping and littering. If the place is clean there we won’t be faced with the challenge of an infestation of rodents.”Khulekani Njokweni, who was born and bred in the Phenduka section of Thokoza and now resides in the suburbs, said they no longer live in Thokoza but constantly visit their family and friends in the area. “Thokoza is the township that groomed me and is still the same as l left it. We want to make a

difference and show our community that we still care about them,” said Njokweni.Kamohelo Modise said they were overwhelmed with the response received from the residents and would continue doing

projects that would make a difference to the community.Ward Councillor Sibongile Msibi said, “We appreciate their efforts - they no longer stay here with us but still love their township.

They are leaving a challenge to residents to stand up and clean their surroundings. We urge the community to take part in such good initiatives.”

Saturday 21 March is Human Rights Day, and 2015 marks 21 years of a new democratic dispensation in a country that is troubled by a disturbing past but has forged ahead to enact one of the most liberal constitutions in the entire world.We spoke reconciliation when the opposite was expected; blood was spilled and sacrifices were made by ordinary people to ensure we had equal treatment irrespective of race or gender, among other things. We indeed have a lot to celebrate, including the contributions made by the women and children of our soil, who kept things together when it was impossible to do so - they still deserve a lot of support from all sectors of our country.As we gear up to commemorate this iconic day, shivers go down my spine when I constantly read and hear about the plight of women losing their lives at the hands of their partners. There are high numbers of women killed by the men in their lives in fits of rage; these men at times turn to kill other family members and then commit suicide.

Why such carnage? What went wrong with men? Let’s take a moment and reflect on the rights of women versus domestic disputes that keep arising; let’s be reminded of the love that brought us together before committing crimes of passion.There’s a lot of good men in our country: speak up and help our fellow brothers that have broken souls; help them find themselves again so they can blossom in the way they were meant to be. Love is the inspiration that keeps us alive and all of us have it. Woman is God’s greatest gift to man - let us acknowledge her.This Human Rights Day, let’s remind ourselves of the right to life of women, that is just like the right to life that all of us have, and make a concerted effort to create better living conditions for our families and communities at large. Last year’s glitches that resulted in a water supply interruption of almost a month in parts of Gauteng have posed a challenge to all municipalities to prepare themselves better for such incidents in the future. Rand Water is the contracted service provider for the entire Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality area and has supplied water to the province without fail since 1906. No one could have anticipated a challenge such as the one experienced during 2014. In this regard, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is working on a future Water Management Plan to cater for such events. O n e component of the plan is the exploration of an early w a r n i n g s y s t e m which would be used to indicate dropping water levels in EMM’s storage reservoirs and allow for speedy intervention. This would be achieved through a telemetric type system that will synchronize all reservoirs in Ekurhuleni, making it easy to divert water from one supply zone to another. This process will also include the harmonization of the Metro’s underground infrastructure so that municipal potable water supply zones are aligned to enable distribution of potable water from one supply zone to another, where practically possible. The Metro is currently working on

constructing two additional water reservoirs, in Palm Ridge and Etwatwa x19, which are expected to be complete in the 2016/2017 financial year. The municipality will also pull out all the stops to ensure that more potable water storage reservoirs are built by the year

2021, in anticipation of future supply risk and population growth due to

urbanization. Furthermore, the construction

of the above-mentioned two storage reservoirs, which will

add additional water storage capacity soon, is already

at an advanced stage of planning.

S e p t e m b e r 2014; so, a d e d i c a t e d feeder line to the existing Russell Road reservoir will

be in place before the end

of 2015/2016. “South Africa

is by its nature a semi-desert area and

Gauteng was built far from natural dams in the chase

for mining prosperity, which requires everyone in the province and Ekurhuleni region in particular to use water sparingly, curtailing dripping taps and reporting any visible leakages,” Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe said. The municipality will augment these interventions by intensifying the implementation of the water conservation and water demand management programmes.

Thokoza police officers and members of the community bade farewell to Thokoza police veteran Captain Johannes Molope who is leaving to go on pension.Molope (60) has worked at the Thokoza Police Station for 33 years and to honour his good work, Thokoza police officers hosted an extraordinary farewell party for him at the station hall. His colleagues and commanders described him as a hard worker who was dedicated to protecting the community. He worked in Katlehong Police Station and when the Thokoza Police Station was erected on 1May 1988 he was one of the police officers who was transferred to Thokoza.Speaking to tame TIMES, Molope said, “Police service is a calling and it needs

tolerance in order to reach your destination. Corruption is a temptation; the remaining police officers should be disciplined not to fall on their way due to corruption. They should trust in God during their term of duties, behave well, and adhere to the code of conduct of South African Police Services.”Colonel Daniel Baloyi, Station Commander of Thokoza Police Station said, “He was dedicated, passionate and committed to his work. We never had any confrontation that the job was not done. We are subjected to a great loss. He had trained the junior members and it is a priceless experience that cannot be replaced. We are wishing him well and to enjoy his rest, he deserves it as he has accomplished what God has sent him to do.”

He added that Molope is special. “What makes him special is that many of his colleagues could not reach their retirement. They fell on the way due to being involved in criminal activities and some could not take the pressure and resigned. Molope is a winner,” said Baloyi. Molope is going to enjoy his pension at his village home in Limpopo.

Kathorus based Extreme Film and Music production house officially screened two of their short films to the public at Kwa Ditselana Cultural Village in Katlehong. The short films that were screened on the day were Okwami Okwezandla and Inguqukho. According to the production house Managing Director Abongile Ntsatha, the objective of showing both films in the township was to showcase local talent to the public. “Okwami Okwezandla short film is about a young boy whose parents choose a career path for him. The rebellious youngster finally drops out in his final year at university to pursue a music career. The other film, Inguquko, is about a girl who fell pregnant and abandoned her tertiary studies. Both films were recorded in Kathorus and feature actors from Ekurhuleni and Alexandra,”

explained Ntsatha. The films were written by the talented Xolisa Mpafa and produced by Extreme Film and Music production house. Mpafa said it is high time people revived the culture of township cinema in order to build the film industry. He said he was concerned that nowadays people tend rather to purchase DVDs and watch them in the comfort of their homes. “There is a lot of acting talent in the township that needs to be nurtured in the right direction so that they can realise their dreams. Our production house provided a necessary platform for aspiring actors and film-makers. I am looking forward to the Inguquko short film being shown at the upcoming showcase Durban International Film Festival. Cinema fanatics should expect more from the Extreme Film and Music Production House,” said Mpafa. Entry to the screening was free of charge and it ran from 12pm until late in the evening.

The Thokoza Hostel based Maskandi music artist Mandlakhe “Duzenaye” Buthelezi has officially released the debut Maskandi DVD that is taking his music to a new level. The DVD consists of 11 hit tracks. “The DVD was filmed in places including Thokoza, Jeppe and Alberton. I chose to film the DVD in different places to make it exciting. Some of the artists featured in the DVD include Mashwabana, Chama boys and Fihliskhwele,” said Duzenaye.The DVD was officially launched in Mpumalanga at Witbank Taxi Rank on 28 February. Mduduzi “Fetsi” Seisa recently released a debut Hip-hop 16-tracks album titled Ng’hamba Kanje which has been embraced by hip-hop music fanatics in various parts of the country. Fetsi said there are great songs for people to enjoy including Istayela track number 5, Istayela Samampela track number 6 and the famous track number 1 called Aken ‘vume. The album was produced by Banele “Proof” Buthelezi and co-composed by Fetsi. It was recorded by Thokoza township based Ezinhle Music Production.

“This album signals my arrival in hip-hop music and I promised my music followers that I would not disappoint. The album is well packaged, a lot of work has gone into the production and the recording part of the album. I got my first hip-hop music break while still in KwaZulu-Natal featuring in a group called Bergville Squad and this album is my first solo project as an artist,” explained Fetsi. Growing up in a township like Soweto and Alexandra, one would never think that rural areas exist in Gauteng. This is partly due to the fact that we associate rural spaces with all other provinces but Gauteng. The reality is that one has to be knowledgeable about the spatial development of the area and what constitutes a rural area. Due to the special focus on urbanisation in our province, such areas are often not prioritised and yet they contribute substantially to the economy of the country. The same could not be said about the Gauteng government, which has identified rural safety and development as one of its key areas of focus. This is largely due to the fact that challenges such as infrastructure development which hampers the provision of services, farm killings, stock theft and labour issues faced by rural communities contribute to instability in the province. Thus, a comprehensive and holistic strategy must be formulated if the safety of these communities is to be guaranteed.South Africa is characterized by high levels of poverty and underdevelopment, especially in the rural areas. Statistics South Africa reported that in 2006, 43.74% of the population lived in rural areas, and these figures are likely to have increased in the past few years.In his State of the Nation address in May 2009, President Jacob Zuma stated that “comprehensive rural development linked to land and agrarian reform and food security” was priority three in the Medium Term Strategic Framework for 2009-2014. Farmers, farm workers and residents within and adjacent to rural communities are often soft targets by criminals. This is due to the remoteness of farms, high market value of properties, long distances between farms, villages and the police station as well as basic infrastructure, such as road networks, that all hamper service delivery and increase response time by the police.As a result of all this, the Department of Community Safety in conjunction with National Civilian Secretariat for Police and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development convened a Rural Safety Summit recently. The summit was attended by Farm Owners, Farm Workers, Farm Tenants, Transvaal

Agricultural Union, Agri S.A, African Farmers Union of South Africa, Agri Gauteng, Farmers Workers Union, who respectively adopted an implementable programme of action (POA) against crime.

Gcinithemba Prince Phandile was recently found guilty of the rape, murder and kidnapping of 29-year-old Palesa Lesapo and given a life sentence for murder, 10 years imprisonment for rape and six months imprisonment for kidnapping by the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.Detective Warrant Officer Mbuyiselo Mofokeng said that on 5 April 2013, the body of the deceased Palesa Lesapo was found dumped next to a local tavern in Phola Park, Thokoza. “The investigation was conducted and it was discovered that the deceased was residing in Phola Park Extension 5 and was last seen the day before the incident with the accused, Phandile. The investigations continued and the tenants where Phandile is residing told the police that they heard a noise at Phandile’s shack of him assaulting someone the day before the incident,” said Mofokeng. He said they began searching for the Phandile in question as he was then at large. “The deceased’s clothing was found in Phandile’s shack. There were traces of blood on the floor, at the door and on the blankets. The DNA was taken to the forensic laboratory for examination to discover whether it matched that of the deceased,” said Mofokeng.He said they also received information that Phandile was seen in Brackendowns, Alberton. They used his photograph and managed to spot him in Hennie Albert Street in Brackendowns in the early hours of the morning five days after the incident. “Phandile was arrested and his blood was also taken for DNA for comparison. The DNA come out positive that he raped, assaulted and kidnapped the deceased. Palm Ridge Court found him guilty and he was sentenced. We worked hand in glove with forensic personnel in collecting each and every piece of evidence from the accused’s shack in order to make sure that Phandile was indeed at the shack with the deceased,” Mofokeng said.He advised women not to walk alone at night or go to drinking places on their own, as they tend to become victims of rape and murder because they are defenceless.
