President’s Message

Hi Everyone! We have had many great events and even more coming up. In July, we did Painting with A Twist. We painted a tropi-cal scene with a palm tree with the help of our instructor. It was easy and fun. There were many excellent paintings although not to level of Scott Suits or Bob Martino originals. My paint-ing was pitiful and it now adorns a place of honor in a cabinet in my laundry room. Dinner at Johnny’s Italian Restaurant was delicious. Wine soothed my failing attempt as an artist. Yesterday we had dinner at Rumba’s. For us, it was a bit of a drive to Oldsmar, but the food was well worth it, but the company left something to be desired. Just kidding! Scott Suits will be putting on a rally in September. These are always fun events, although Connie and I have been known to get lost. Proceeds of this event will go to the Hope Children’s Home, a very worthy charity. This is as much a scavenger hunt as a rally. Scott has us find signs, mailboxes, headstones and other obscure items along the way. This is not timed, so there is no pressure. Register today. In October we will have a catered dinner at LaVille des Beaux Arts, Julian Hartzog’s home. Julian is famous for his wearable art, and his home is a must see. In November, Michael Gulick has organized a visit to the Gypsy Vanner Horses farm in Ocala, followed by lunch at the Off-the-Hook Peruvian Bar and Grill. We will have a tour of the farm with information about the horse’s discovery in Great Britain, bringing the breed to the US, and the breeding of this fabulous house in the US December finds us back again at the Safety Harbor Spa for our annual Holiday Brunch. This well attended event is always a highlight of our season. We will be in the larger room with a great view. Don’t eat dinner the night before so you have room for the great food. We will have our famous Chinese present swap and announcement of Member of The Year. Space is lim-ited, so sign up as soon as you receive the next issue.Hope to see you all in September.

Titantic: The Artifact Museum & Dinner

Orlando, FLJune 11, 2017By Pat Watson

On June 11th, 31 club members received their first, second and third class boarding passes for the White Star Lines steamship the R.M.S. Titanic. Each mem-

ber assumed a new identity for the journey. Even though the day was stormy, we were assured of a smooth sailing on glassy seas. We were welcomed by the manager, and then transitioned to Marshall, our guide for the next 75 minutes. We would discover at the end of our journey how we would fare, would we survive? While the original Titanic sunk on it’s maiden voyage 105 years ago, there still is a great mystery and interest in what went wrong, who survived, and what remains. The tour began with a 4 minute video setting the stage for why the ship was built (competition for the Cunard line), where (Queens Island, Ireland), the construction, and some of the mistakes that con-tributed to the collision with the iceberg. The exhibit contains 400 artifacts that were salvaged. One of the largest sections of the ship’s hull is on display. While impressive, it was smaller items that captured our interest. One was a pair of long johns, well worn by a crew member and while rusty were still intact. How, did they survive the ocean for so long? One of the other artifacts was a menu, by current standards the entrees did not seem too appetizing for first class passengers. For example, a crushed bone appetizer and chicken hash were a few of the items on the menu. The exhibit has multiple rooms, many are recreations of areas of the ship. There was the verandah café, a first class cabin, and the grand staircase where a photo of our group was taken on the stairs. The glass ceiling was spectacular. On the promenade deck we gazed up at the stars and out on the rippling water, shivering in the cold air. Lights cast an illusion of water, and several club members mentioned they felt like the deck was moving. In one of the rooms, an incredibly large iceberg replica was on display (real ice). You could touch the ice to see how cold the ice was on that fateful day. Marshall our tour guide had many interesting facts and some of them really stand out. One example is that 64 life-boats were required for all passengers, but a change was made to include only 20. The ship was only insured for $500. After all why spend more on lifeboats and insurance on an unsink-able ship. The other fact is that other ships attempted to alert the Titanic of icebergs in the area, but they were requested to be silent. The reason is that crew members were busy send-ing telegraph messages from 1st class passengers and did not want to be interrupted.

Above: Event organizers Pat & Greg WatsonBelow: Happy Anniversary to JoAnn & Jim Dean

At the end of our journey, we discovered whether the passenger whose identity we assumed survived. The list was sobering, of 2223 passengers only 706 survived. After the tour, the group went to O’Charley’s for an early dinner. The restaurant accommodated the club with a private room for a more intimate and quieter setting. The choices were numerous and the food was fantastic. Many of the selec-tions were under $10.00, and the portions were large enough to take some home. It was Jim and JoAnn Dean’s 42nd an-niversary, and we were happy to celebrate this occasion with them. The event ended with a heavy thunderstorm, but we were grateful it held off most of the day. For those that did not make it you missed a fun event.

Painting With a Twist & Dinner

Clearwater, FLJuly 23, 2017By Lynn Hutchinson

We had a lot of fun at our July event. Sixteen members painted a picture of a palm tree beach scene. The artist

instructor had us follow her step by step to com-plete our painting. Surprisingly, even the most inexperienced painter did a great job. We had a fun time , enjoyed snacks and wine we brought, and the 2 hours flew by. Everyone went home with a finished masterpiece. We played two games. Hot potato was won by Lynn Hutchinson and Debbie Cabrera won the game of drawing on a paper plate on her head. Following our painting, twenty two went to Johnny’s Italian Restaurant for an early dinner. They have the best “Johnny bread” with dip-ping sauce. I especially love their homemade Creamy Garlic dressing for the salad. They have traditional Italian dishes on the menu…chicken and veal Parmesan as well as lasagna and spaghetti. There were a few fish specials, too.

Chris Gregoriou Travels to GermanyGermanyJune 2017By Chris Gregoriou

My trip to Germany with the Mercedes Benz Club June 2017 was quite eventful.

I arrived two days early which gave me a chance to do a walking tour of Stuttgart’s many monuments, museums restaurants and stores. After a great breakfast at the hotel our event planner, John O’Sullivan took care of us every day morning, noon and night. Once on the bus our group was escorted to many museums, fac-tories and sights for five days – too many to list. We were treated to lunch in the Black Forest and dinner at the Slaughter House Beer Garden to name a few incredible places and meals.. My comment to the President of the Mer-cedes Benz Club, Terry Kiwala, was ” After be-ing a member of this club for over 35 years this is the pannicle of my membership”. Enclosed are a few pictures I took with one of me touch-ing the remains of the wall in Berlin. (Not part of the tour, just on my bucket list).
