TAPIT FILLY ON TOP AT KEENELAND
A total of $4,360,000 changed hands on 229 horses
Wednesday in Lexington as the marathon Keeneland November
Breeding Stock sale continued with the first of two Book 5
sessions. The average was $19,041 with a $11,500 median. The
buy-back rate was 27.4%. Last year=s corresponding ninth
session featured a number of expensive racing prospects,
making year-to-year comparisons difficult.
Cumulative trade through this point in the sale is remarkably
close to what it was last year, with 2,712 transactions yielding
gross receipts of $208,371,300 in 2016. The average of
$108,301 is up $16 from last year=s average of $108,205, while
the median remains unchanged at $45,000. The RNA rate is
27.7% vs. 25.7%.
The session=s top price was the $140,000 paid for Bamboozle
(Tapit) (hip 3201), an unraced 4-year-old half-sister to MGSW
and sire Tiz Wonderful (Tiznow). Carrying her first foal, by
Midshipman, the grey was consigned by Padraig Campion=s
Blandford Stud and was signed for by Big Kid.
Not far behind at $130,000 was 10-year-old Minishaft
(Mineshaft), who was offered as hip 3006 by Mr. & Mrs. T.
Wayne Sweezey=s Timber Town Farm on behalf of R. S. Evans.

KY NOVEMBER SALE: THROUGH BOOK FOURby Bill Oppenheim
Through Tuesday there had been nine sessions of selling at the
Kentucky November sales, one >night of the stars= (though they
don=t call it that any more) at Fasig-Tipton, and eight sessions
through the first four (of seven) books at Keeneland. A total of
1,783 horses had sold (actually just 88, or 5% of the total, at
Fasig) for a combined gross of $258,163,000 (about
$54.1-million at Fasig, $204-million at Keeneland), an average of
$144,791. At the corresponding point in the sales last year,
there had been 1,807 horses sold, for a gross of $248,843,000,
and an average of $137,710. Aside from marvelling at how such
a massive number of transactions come out roughly the same--
the number sold is down 1%, the gross is up 4%, and the
average up 5%--it does suggest there is truth in the old adage
>class is a pyramid=, because there are only so many class horses
to go around, and not all of them end up in the sales. Cont. p4

Minishaft, in foal to Evans= >TDN Rising Star= and MGISW
Tonalist, was picked up by Davant Latham, agent. The daughter
of GSW Minidar (Alydar) is a half to GII Jim Dandy S. winner A
Little Warm (Stormin Fever), as well as the dam of Grade II
winner Mini Sermon (Pulpit). She was acquired here by Evans
out the blockbuster 2011 dispersal of his late brother Ned Evans=
estate.
A colt by Cairo Prince (hip 3339) led the way for weanlings,
commanding a winning bid of $120,000 by Steve Shahinian on
behalf of Harvey Clarke. Clarke was among the ownership group
that campaigned Cairo Price to wins in the 2013 GII Nashua S.
and 2014 GIII Holy Bull S. The grey colt was consigned by
Brereton Jones= Airdrie Stud, which bred hip 3339 and stands
Cairo Prince. He is out of a half-sister to GISW Request for Parole
(Judge T C). According to TDN sales statistics, Cairo Prince ranks
third among North American first-crop sires by weanling average
at $93,055.
Two-time GI Carter H. winner and stallion prospect Dads Caps
(Discreet Cat) (hip 3394) was bought back late in the day for
$190,000.

War Front | Claiborne Farm A total of 34 (15 at Fasig, 19 at Keeneland) have
made $1-million or more, with four of those
selling for between $3-$4-million, and a total of
13 selling for $2-million or more.
Sectors: according to figures compiled by Dr.
Emily Plant from the two websites, there had
been 1,375 mares catalogued in foal through the
end of Book 4, of which 870 (63.2%) had sold for
a total of $149,537,400, an average of $171,882, and accounting
for roughly 60% of the November gross so far.
A total of 1,251 weanlings had been catalogued, of which 606
(48.4%) had sold, for a gross of $56,850,900, an average of
$93,813. That left a little under 300 other horses, mostly fillies
out of training and racehorses, which have grossed around
another $50-million. So the market for in-foal mares continues
to dominate the sales, and their clearance rate from the
catalogue (63.2%) was nearly one-third higher than the 48.4%
rate attained by weanlings.
As we=ve come to expect, the two top sires both by in-foal
mare average and weanling average were Tapit and War Front.
The Claiborne sire
actually averaged
more than Tapit for
in-foal mares, War
Front=s six averaging
$1,720,833, while 12
mares in foal to Tapit
averaged $1,610,417.
Among the weanlings,
Tapit had five sell from
10 catalogued, for an
average of $692,000,
while War Front had
eight sell, from 11
catalogued, for an
average of $640,750.
In both categories, as
at the yearling sales,
they were miles ahead
of the competition.
For whatever reasons, there has been a wicked withdrawal
rate of weanlings, such that the number three Kentucky
November sire (with more than one sold) by weanling average,
Medaglia d=Oro, had four foals average $437,500, but that was
from 13 catalogued. Pioneerof the Nile had four average
$337,500, from 10 catalogued. Cont. p5

Cairo Prince | Airdrie Stud
Bill Oppenheim cont.
Besides siring the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 37
years from his second crop, he now has the pro-tem champion
2-year-old colt, GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile winner Classic Empire,
in his fourth crop, while
one of the best horses
from his first crop, Grade
II winner Cairo Prince, has
been a huge commercial
sensation among sires
with first weanlings, as we
shall see presently. After
Pioneerof the Nile in
fourth spot, Scat Daddy
ran fifth through Tuesday,
with 11 weanlings selling (of 24 catalogued) for an average of
$245,455. Other notable sires with six-figure weanling averages
through Book 4 included: Curlin had 12 sell from 12 offered (19
catalogued) for an average of $197,250; Uncle Mo had 28 sell
(of 48 catalogued) for an average of $143,464; Into Mischief had
14 weanlings sell for an average of $109,286; while the Leading
Freshman Sire, Union Rags, had 11 sell for an average of
$107,818.
Among the first-year weanling sires, Three Chimneys Farm=s
Will Take Charge (Unbridled=s Song), the champion 3-year-old
colt of 2013, figured to lead the pack and has, through Book 4,
with 18 foals (of 30 catalogued) averaging $128,444. Coolmore=s
GI Breeders= Cup Turf and G1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner
Magician (Galileo) is a somewhat surprising second, but with just
three sold (of seven catalogued), which averaged a very healthy
$96,667. But the commercial star, hands down, is Airdrie=s (and
Darley=s) Cairo Prince, the 2014 GII Holy Bull winner from
Pioneerof the Nile=s first crop. He had 16 foals average $95,938
off a stud fee of $10,000. We joked with Airdrie=s Bret Jones
that they=d deliberately set the stud fee too low, but even if he
had stood at the $15,000 price which he=s been since his first
season, his foals through Book 4 would have averaged over six
times his stud fee.
Three horses were clustered together around the $75,000
mark: Lane=s End=s Noble Mission, Frankel=s brother, had 10
average $77,800, of 22 catalogued. Coolmore Ashford=s
Verrazano (More Than Ready) had 21 sell (of 46 catalogued) for
an average of $75,810; while WinStar=s Fed Biz (Giant=s
Causeway) was also generating a lot of buzz, with an impressive
16 sold of 20 catalogued (80%), for an average of $75,688--over
six times his $12,500 fee. Like Cairo Prince, the individuals were
clearly impressing the judges. Cont. p6

American Pharoah | Coolmore
Bill Oppenheim cont.
The clearance rate from the catalogue for in-foal mares, as
noted above, has been nearly 15% higher than that for yearlings.
A total of 11 sires had in-foal mare averages, through Tuesday,
over $400,000, and among them, over two-thirds of the mares
catalogued in foal to these 11 sires were
listed as sales. These included two
first-year sires: Ashford=s American
Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile), of course--
11 mares in foal to him averaged
$435,000--but the leading first-year
covering sire was WinStar=s GI Florida
Derby and GI Donn H. winner Constitution
(Tapit), to whom Ithinkisawapudycat, a
daughter of Bluegrass Cat who is the dam
of the Grade I-winning 2-year-old filly
Sweet Loretta, sold in foal for $2.2-million. Constitution thus had
seven mares average $508,143 in foal, though besides the big
mare, the other six averaged $226,166.
Besides War Front, Tapit, and leading first-year covering sires
Constitution and American Pharoah, the other seven sires which
averaged over $400,000 were: Curlin (8 sold of 12 catalogued,
avg $834,375); Medaglia d=Oro (13/15, avg $697,308); Pioneerof
the Nile (16/19, avg $596,250); Into Mischief (16/23, $487,625);
Bernardini (8/13, $465,875); Uncle Mo (19/35, $441,316); and
Speightstown (7/10, $417,857). Among first-year covering sires,
after Constitution and American Pharoah, the remainder of the
top 10 (2+ sold) were: WinStar=s Daredevil (More Than Ready,
5/8, avg $184,800); Lane=s End=s Honor Code (A.P. Indy, 16/24,
$167,313); Liam=s Map (Unbridled=s Song,
14/26, $162,286); and Tonalist (Tapit, 13/21,
$123,846). Three Chimneys Farm=s Palace
Malice (Curlin) had 17/29 sell for an average
of $106,059, and also over $80,000 on
average were: Spendthrift=s Goldencents
(5/7, $98,000), the dual GI Breeders= Cup Dirt
Mile winner from Into Mischief=s first crop;
Claiborne=s Lea (First Samurai, 6/13,
$96,667); and WinStar=s Carpe Diem (Giant=s
Causeway), who averaged $80,818 for 11
mares selling in foal, from 27 catalogued. Contact Bill

WEEKLY SALES TICKER by Bill Oppenheim
“Through a combination of increase in gross at Fasig’s one-day sale and the enhancement to Keeneland Book 4 of the Conquest dispersal, the gross for the first nine days of selling at the November Sales is up by 4% ($10-million) and the average up by 5% over 2015. It’s very striking that the gross since 2013 has been pretty stable but the number sold has dropped by 14% during that time, the clearance rate from the catalogues has dropped by 11%, and the average is up by 13%: the same number are being offered but fewer are selling for more money.”

NAKATANI TO RETURN TO RIDING Veteran jockey Corey Nakatani, who has not ridden
competitively since this past April, will return to the saddle and
will be represented by his son Matt, who released the news on
his Instagram account Wednesday.
ANot only are we excited to

for what the future holds,@
Matt Nakatani wrote. AThe
amount of positive feedback
we have received this past
week has been very humbling
and we are very grateful for
the Trainers and Owners that
support our team. Since I can
remember, I have been his
biggest fan. I am so proud of
the career he has had to date.
Better yet, he still has many
more wins left in him. I am
extremely blessed to not only
call him my dad but to be able to represent a rider of his
capabilities is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.@ Cont. p8

Nakatani, who turned 46 Oct. 21, has booted home the
winners of 10 Breeders= Cup events, most recently accounting
for the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile with Tapizar (Tapit). He rode a
career-best 300 winners in 1995, but has not approached that
level since and had ridden 27 winners from 158 mounts through
early April. His most recent graded stakes success came courtesy
of Chiropractor (Kitten=s Joy) in the 2015 GI Hollywood Derby.
In May, Nakatani told Daily Racing Form that he was mulling
over retirement, citing lack of opportunity with top barns.

GURAL TO BE HONORED WITH GALBREATH
AWARD Jeff Gural, a long-time New York real estate magnate,
Standardbred breeder and owner, and, more recently, harness
track owner and operator in New Jersey and New York, has
been selected as the recipient of the John W. Galbreath Award,
given each year since 1990 to a person or persons who have led
successful equine enterprises, the University of Louisville Equine
Industry Program announced
Wednesday. Gural operates
the Meadowlands, Vernon
Downs and Tioga Raceway,
and owns two farms of his
own.
AThe Galbreath Award
recognizes people who have
built successful enterprises
that serve the industry and
act in a positive way to build
marketing initiatives that encourage participation in the horse
industry by others,@ said Tim Capps, the director of the Equine
Industry Program. AJeff Gural's love of horses and of the game of
harness racing has driven his desire to sustain the sport and
make it a better place, first for fans, then for participants. He's a
believer in the sport, and has invested a lot of his money and
time into making it more vibrant and more deserving of peoples=
attention.@
Gural, a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a
degree in Civil Engineering, became interested in horse racing as
a young adult and maintained interest in the game throughout
his successful career in the real estate business, in which he
heads Newmark Grubb Knight Frank. Taking a more active role
in the Standardbred industry later in life, Gural is the leader of
American Racing and Entertainment LLC, which operates
Vernon, Tioga and the Meadowlands. While he is credited with
drastically improving the outlook for harness racing in upstate
New York, Gural is best known for his work at the
Meadowlands--where he built a new, state-of-the-art
grandstand and has made significant efforts to improve the
integrity of the racing product.
AWe have to change in order to survive,@ Gural said. AHaving
said that, I continue to believe that change--positive change--is a
possibility, and a necessity.@
The Galbreath Award will be presented at the Speed Art
Museum on the campus of the University of Louisville Thursday
evening. For more coverage of the event, please read Saturday=s
edition of the TDN.
NAYLOR, RAWNAQ EYEING HISTORICAL
FEAT AT CHELTENHAM By Bill Finley
Owner Irv Naylor likes to tell people he has had a magical life,
and it=s an admirable outlook considering he was paralyzed in a
riding accident in 1999. But Naylor, 81, prefers to stay focused
on the positive aspects of his life, like the fact that he owns a
very good steeplechase horse named Rawnaq (Ire) (Azamour
{Ire}).
Rawnaq, clearly the
best steeplechase
horse in the U.S., will
be heading to the
prestigious
Cheltenham Festival in
March, where he will
look to become the
first American-trained
horse to ever win a
race at the festival. A
win would not only make history but would lead to a $500,000
bonus given to any horse that wins the May 15 GI Iroquois in the
U.S. and the March 16 G1 World Hurdle at Cheltenham within a
12-month period.
Rawnaq, like most of Naylor=s horses, began his career in
Europe before being privately purchased midway through last
year. Turned over to Naylor=s primary trainer, Cyril Murphy, he
finished third in last year=s G1 Grand National and second in the
G1 Colonial Cup. This year, he has been unbeatable, winning the
G3 Temple Gwathmey, the Iroquois and the Grand National at
Far Hills, New Jersey. His next start will be Saturday=s Colonial
Cup.
AA lot of Rawnaq=s success is due to Cyril Murphy,@ Naylor said.
ACyril is an excellent trainer who understands what it takes to
win in Europe and what it takes to win here in the U.S. He
applies his knowledge and horses thrive in his program. We are
very happy to have him as the primary trainer of my horses.@
A win at Cheltenham would certainly be the best day of
Naylor=s life when it comes to his participation in steeplechase
racing. The worst occurred on April 19, 1999. Riding at age 63 as
an amateur in the Grand National Timber Steeplechase at
Butler, Maryland, his mount fell at the 16th of 18 fences. As a
result, Naylor broke the C5 vertebrae in his neck and has not
walked since.
AThere were many people who told me I was too old and I
should retire,@ said Naylor, who owns Snow Time Inc, which
operates ski resorts. AMany others encouraged me to keep
riding because they said I set such a good example for others,
people who wanted to continue riding later in life.@

Rawnaq wins the American Grand National
Sarah K. Andrew
Since the accident, Naylor has been a leading force in the
effort to cure paralysis and believes that stem cell research and
treatments are the answer.
AUnfortunately, I don=t think there will be a cure in my
lifetime,@ he said. AMaybe within the next 50 years.@
He says the worst aspect of
being paralyzed is that he can no
longer ride.
AVery sadly, I have not been on
a horse in 16 years, since I fell at
the Grand National,@ Naylor said.
AI don=t expect to be able to ride
a horse ever again, and that=s
because I have no sense of
balance. I would fall to the left or
fall to the right. I could get on
the horse with a hoyer lift and be
placed in the saddle but I would
need someone on each side of
me to make sure I don=t fall off
the horse.@
But nothing that happened
that day in Maryland has affected his enthusiasm for the sport.
Naylor has built the most powerful stable in American
steeplechasing. He has all but clinched all of the 2016 owner
titles, meaning he will have led the sport in wins eight straight
years and in money earned in six of the last eight.
He has had many top horses, but Rawnaq has a chance to
eclipse the rest, especially if he performs well at Cheltenham.
In order to promote international racing, the National
Steeplechase Association and Cheltenham officials announced
jointly on Nov. 15, 2015 the creation of the Brown Advisory
Iroquois Cheltenham Challenge, a $500,000 bonus given to any
horse that won the two races. Both races are run at three miles.
Eyeing the $500,000 bonus, top Irish trainer Willie Mullins sent
over two horses for the Iroquois, multiple stakes winner Nichols
Canyon (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) and Shaneshill (Ire) (King=s
Theatre {Ire}). But Rawnaq prevailed, winning by a neck over
Shaneshill.
A[The Mullins horses] specifically targeted the Iroquois for that
very reason, the bonus,@ Murphy said. AThey were already
contemplating having a go in the World Hurdle. I wouldn=t say
they thought it was a formality that one of the two would win it,
but I=m sure they thought the Iroquois was the easier half of the
challenge.@
Rawnaq never distinguished himself when racing in Europe,
winning 8 of 46 starts, though he did finish third in a handicap
event at the Cheltenham Festival in 2015. Has his recent run of
success been a product of his improvement or is it that the
competition is much softer in the U.S.?
AHis form was solid when we went looking for a horse over
there,@ Murphy said. AHe fit our criteria. The more consistent
ground over here certainly has been a benefit to him. He likes
the drier ground. He definitely appreciates the drier conditions
and he seems to be a relentless galloper.@
After the Colonial Cup, Rawnaq
will stay in the U.S. until sometime in
January, Murphy said. He will then
ship over to England and will likely
have a prep there for the World
Hurdle. His regular rider Jack Doyle
was injured in a Sept. 22 spill at
Belmont, but Murphy believes he
will be ready to ride again by the
time of the World Hurdle.
There=s no doubt that European
steeplechasing is much tougher than
American jump racing. A few
American horses have gone over
there to win, including Grand
National winners Ben Nevis (1980)
and Jay Trump (1965). But none has
ever won at the Cheltenham Festival, a race meet so tough it
even tripped up Flatterer, arguably the greatest American
jumper of modern times. He finished second in the 1987
Champion Hurdle. In ante-post betting, Rawnaq is 33-1 to win
the World Hurdle, perhaps a bit generous considering that the
two European horses he beat at Iroquois are much lower in the
odds. Nichols Canyon is 10-1 and Shaneshill is 16-1.
AI think that price on our horse is realistic,@ Murphy said. AI
would be delighted if we were to finish in the first four or five.
But with any race on any given day, you can have some racing
luck, so there=s no reason to think he can=t improve on that
position.@
AWe certainly hope he is up to task and we will do all we can to
have him up to the task,@ Naylor said. AI have great confidence in
our trainer and I believe he will have him up for the challenge. I
also think we have a very good horse.@
It may take some magic for Rawnaq to win at Cheltenham, but
he is owned by someone who believes in such things. A tragic
accident never stopped Naylor from achieving many of his goals
in life. Perhaps he has found a horse that is every bit as
courageous.
A + will indicate first-time starters, an (S) will be used for
state-bred races, a (C) will be used for maiden-claiming races
and an (R) will be used for other restricted races.

NYTB to Administer NY Stallion Stakes Series Noms:
The New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. reminds stallion
owners that, beginning with the 2017 breeding season, all
nomination forms should be directed to the NYTB and not to the
New York Racing Association, as in the past. The administration
of the NY Stallion Stakes Series was transferred from NYRA to
NYTB earlier this year.
In order for the progeny of a stallion to be eligible for the
series, consisting of 10 stakes races worth over $1 million, the
stallion must be fully nominated in the year of the foal=s
conception. For the upcoming breeding season, stallion owners
should complete the NYSS Series Nomination Form for Series
2020 (Foals of 2018) and send the nomination fee to NYTB at 57
Phila Street, Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866. A stallion=s nomination
fee is $2,500, or advertised stud fee (whichever is higher). Fifty
percent of the nomination fee is due February 15; the remaining
50% is due July 1.
For the convenience of stallion owners, breeders, owners and
trainers, the NYTB website (www.nytbreeders.org) will maintain
a NYSS webpage with forms and other pertinent info.

Ransom Wins Bergstein Award:
Margaret Ransom, who penned a story for the off-shore
betting website USRacing.com that revealed dire conditions for
over three dozen horses on a Kentucky farm that ultimately led
to charges against trainer Maria Borell and her father Chuck
Borell, has won the Stan
Bergstein Writing Award
and a $25,000 first
prize.
"Margaret exposed a
problem and led to
action, which is what
this award is all about,
so she deserves credit
and recognition for her
work,@ commented
Barry Irwin, the CEO of Team Valor, who sponsors the award.
As a result of the Ransom story, outside horsemen and equine
retirement groups came to the aid of the horses, while an
investigation from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, led
to charges against the Borells. Chuck Borell pleaded guilty to
charges in September. Maria Borell, who oversaw most of the
training in 2015 of champion Runhappy (Super Saver), was also
charged with 43 counts of animal cruelty. The horses were
seized and volunteers and retirement farms stepped up to the
plate. Cont. p5
Stories are submitted over the course of the year to Team
Valor and a panel of judges, including Trevor Denman, Hall of
Fame jockey Chris McCarron and turf writers Neil Milbert,
Maryjean Wall and Michael Veitch were this year=s judges.
AThe initial reaction of many following the firing of Maria
Borell was to come to her defense,@ offered Wall, herself a
Pulitzer Prize nominee and three-time Media Eclipse Award
winner for the Lexington Herald-Leader. AHowever, Margaret
Ransom=s thorough research revealed there was much, much
more to this story than the popular press initially reported. The
article took a trending news item and went after the
unanswered questions. While all entries did a good job taking
readers beyond the obvious, this one dealt with a topic of
intense emotional interest to an audience exceeding the bounds
of racing insiders, and did so in a reader-friendly way.@

CLEARANCE RATE RISES;KODIAC DOMINANT AGAIN
By Emma Berry
There was a sense of deja vu on Wednesday as Kodiac (GB)
once again ruled the roost at Goffs, accounting for four of the
top seven lots and the only two foals to bring six-figure sums in
the session.
Heading the list was lot 907, Linacre House Stud's colt out of
the juvenile winner Spinaminnie (Ire) (Moss Vale {Ire}), a
half-sister to six black-type performers including the
G3 Chartwell Fillies' S. winner San Sicharia (Ire) (Daggers Drawn).
Ruairi O'Coileain of Ennistown Stud came out best of the
interested parties, his i150,000 bid securing the first foal.
"He's as nice a horse as I've seen here all week," he said.
"Sometimes you have to give a bit extra. We'll see how smart
we've been next year when we bring him back. Linacre House
have done a great job with him but hopefully there's a bit more
to come.@
Franny and Niamh Woods didn't have to go quite so far to buy
lot 887, but i110,000 was the final sum as the hammer came
down on the Kodiac colt, one of just two foals offered this week
by John and Clodagh McStay's Oaklawn Stud. Out of a sister to
the dual Group 3 winner and multiple Group 1-placed Norse
Dancer (Ire) (Halling), the late April colt is a half-brother to three
winners.

NZB READY TO RUN SETS RECORD The first session of the two-day New Zealand Bloodstock
Ready to Run Sale of 2-Year-Olds closed with encouraging gains
across most categories at Karaka Wednesday, including a new
record price of NZ$650,000 for Lot 280, a colt by Sebring (Aus).
A total of 144 horses sold out of 280 catalogued, grossing
NZ$14,610,500, with a clearance rate of 56.69%. The average
increased by 11.45% to NZ$101,462, while the median rose by
7.69% to NZ$70,000.
The very last lot through the ring Wednesday, Lot 280 by G1
Golden Slipper hero Sebring (Aus) and consigned by Lyndhurst
Farm, was knocked down to Toby Koenig, bidding for Ultra
Thoroughbreds. He is a half-brother to three listed winners and
his dam Joleur (Aus) (Bite the Bullet) is a full-sister Group 3
winner Mica=s Pride (Aus) (Bite the Bullet), herself the dam of
MG1SW Criterion (NZ) (Sebring {Aus}).

Clearance Rate Rises; Kodiac Dominant Again Cont. from p1 Commenting on his purchase, Franny Woods said, "I fell in lovewith him from the moment I saw him. He's by a top-class sireand he's a classy individual. He's a late foal so we'll take our timewith him but he will be re-offered next year." The clearance rate has improved steadily throughout the weekand reached 72% on Wednesday when 163 of the foals offeredwere marked as sold. It still hasn't been enough to lift the sale tothe level of last year, with the session's turnover of i4,825,200being down by 22%, while the average dropped 18% toi29,602. The median didn't dip quite so much, with the figure
of i26,000 being a decline of7%. Adding to the Kodiac goldrush was another pair ofcolts, one of which, lot 972, isheading to Normandy afterselling to Hubert Honore ofHaras d'Ommeel fori85,000. Out of theArgentinean seven-time
winner Bailonguera (Arg) (Southern Halo), who posted her bestperformance when striking in the G2 Clasico Marcos Levalle, thecolt's pedigree was of major appeal to the buyer, especially hisclose relationship to Baghadur (Ire) (Zanzibari), a stakes winnerin both France and Hong Kong. Honore commented, "He's been bought for a syndicate andwill come back to my farm to be sold next year. Baghadur hasbeen very well received in Hong Kong. The mare is a bit old buthe's from a good family and I hope he can improve a bit--it'sMrs. Fabre's family." Lot 941, Ballyreddin Stud's Kodiac half-brother to treble U.S.
winner Moon Over Cuzco (Malibu Moon), completed the leadingquartet when sold to Mark Dwyer of Oaks Farm for i82,000. Hisunraced dam Wonderful Town (Bernstein) is herself a half-sisterto G3 Prix Miesque winner Magic America (High Yield). Of course the offspring of other stallions were also availableand one of those breaking the stranglehold of the Tally-Ho Studresident was another name who remains hugely popular at acommercial level, Dark Angel (Ire). Jacqueline Norris of JockeyHall Stud offered both his most expensive foal of the sale so farand the day's dearest filly in lot 898, who brought the hammerdown at i90,000. Underlining the international aspect of the bloodstockbusiness, the second foal of the young dual winner Sindjara(Include) was bought by an Australian for a Chinese syndicate, but will stay in Europe to race and will most likely eventually gointo training in France with Mikel Delzangles. Robert Roulston, the Chief Executive Officer of theChina-based Rifa Mustang operation, said, "She was a really nicefilly and we had to pay a decent price for her. Rifa Mustang has50 horses and she will stayhere in Europe. It's my firsttime here at Goffs and I'mpretty impressed with thewhole set-up." A son of first-crop sire andG1 Investec Derby winnerRuler Of The World (Ire)caused a stir as the last lotthrough the ring (lot 1011)when selling to GlenvaleBloodstock for i96,000. The bay, offered by Middlelane Farm, isthe third produce of the winning Crystal Morning (Ire) (CapeCross {Ire}), a half-sister to G3 Prix Messidor S. winner Graphic(Ire) (Excellent Art {GB}). Showcasing (GB) has been the subject of rave reviews sinceretiring to stud, but his half-brother Camacho (GB) was wellahead of him as a proven sire and took his turn in the spotlighton Wednesday via his son out of the Hawk Wing (Ire) mareSonning Rose (Ire). HARZAND SETTLING IN AT GILLTOWN In recent seasons, Galileo (Ire) has been joined at Coolmore by
his Derby-winning sons Australia (GB) and Ruler Of The World
(Ire), and now his half-brother Sea The Stars (Ire) has a
Derby-winning son of his own to keep him company following
the retirement of Harzand (Ire) to the Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud.
Breeders visiting the Goffs November Sale this week have the
chance to hop in a courtesy car to visit Gilltown's new recruit, as
well as his sire and of course Sea The Stars's other half-brother
Born To Sea (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).
Despite being just out of training, the remarkably laidback
Harzand, who received his first visitors Wednesday morning,
appears to have adapted well to his new life at stud, and
sauntered out of his box to adopt the perfect pose for
onlookers.
"He has a wonderful temperament and has been so easy to
deal with," said Gilltown's head stallion man Ray Moore as he
showed off his new charge.
On the way down from the stallion barn to retrieve Sea The
Stars from his paddock, Moore pointed out the contented figure
of Harzand's 2-year-old half-brother Haripour (Ire) (Shamardal)
enjoying his winter break at the Co. Kildare farm after finishing
runner-up on his sole start for Dermot Weld at Gowran Park on
Oct. 18. Their dam, Hazariya, was a feature of the Goffs
November Sale just two years ago when she sold for i480,000
to Newsells Park Stud. She will return to the sales ring, this time
at Tattersalls, where she will be offered as lot 1826 during the
December Mare Sale.

SIYOUNI COLT TOPS ARQANA SESSION A son of Siyouni (Fr) fetched a bid of i90,000 from
Powerstown Stud to top a session of flat-bred yearlings on
Wednesday that marked the third and final day of the Arqana
Autumn Sale. The average for the session climbed marginally
(2.2%) to i7,968, while the median dipped 4.2% to i5,750.
With 19 more horses sold than on the comparable day last year,
the aggregate was up 18.2% to i1,115,500, while the buyback
rate dropped nine points to 18.1%.
Cumulatively, 445 horses--also including National Hunt-bred
yearlings and horses-in-training--were sold over the three-day
sale for a record aggregate of i8,608,000, which was up 3.9%
from last year. The buyback rate dropped three points to 21.9%,
the average was down 2.6% to i19,344, while the median
remained steady at i9,000.
Haras de l=Hotellerie presented the session-topping son of
Siyouni (lot 549), who is a half-brother to the stakes-winning
Coup De Theatre (Fr) (Gold Away {Fr}). Agent Marco Bozzi
conducted the bidding on behalf of Tom Whitehead=s
Powerstown Stud, and the agent said, ATom rang me up and
asked me to buy him a horse for the breeze ups. This one was
obvious to me, he has everything: a nice page, good
conformation and obviously Siyouni needs no introduction.@
It was a long gap to the next highest price, which was the
i40,000 paid by Alessandro Botti for lot 532, a son of Le Havre
(Ire) out of the stakes-placed Shining Sea (Fr) (Anabaa Blue {Fr})
from Coulonces Consignment.
The Autumn Sale included the final yearling offerings of the
year for Arqana, and its yearling sales grossed a record
i67-million, a 3% gain on 2015 and 60% higher than in 2011.
Arqana Chairman Eric Hoyeau said, AThis is a satisfactory
consolidation of the yearling market, with a record number of
horses sold for the third year running. These results pay tribute
to the hard work of our vendors, who have consistently
upgraded their stock and brought high-quality, well-prepped
individuals to the ring. I believe it also owes to the segmentation
of our sales, with each of the four catalogues assembling
consistent groups of horses courtesy of a graded format that our
buyers are now familiar with and find adapted to their
expectations, which is reflected in the clearance rate. I would
like to extend our thanks to our buyers from around the world
and wish them the best of success with their purchases.@

AWe knew we would need to dig into our pockets, and the
competition was strong with three bidders who made us work

said Koenig. AWe are very, very happy with this result. We came

The day=s second-highest price belonged to Lot 263, which

David Ellis of Te Akau Racing led the buyers table, acquiring six
head for NZ$1,095,000, with the Prima Park-consigned Lot 41, a
bay colt by Savabeel (Aus) the most expensive at NZ$280,000.
Mark and Shelley Treweek=s Lyndhurst Farm topped the
vendor list by aggregate and average (three or more sold), with
11 2-year-olds grossing NZ$2,591,000, and averaging
NZ$235,545, including the record-setting Lot 280. They also sold
another son of Sebring, Lot 148 out of Group 3 victress Crafty
Irna (Aus) (Starcraft {NZ}) for NZ$400,000 to Gary Chan of Hong
Kong.
Leading the way among first-season sires was two-time
Singapore Horse of the Year Super Easy (NZ) (Darci Brahma
{NZ}), who averaged NZ$145,000 for three juveniles, topped by
Lot 241, a colt consigned by Kiltannon Stables, Ltd., who is also
bound for Hong Kong after bringing NZ$200,000 from Mr. J.
Fung.
New Zealand Bloodstock=s Managing Director Andrew
Seabrook commented, AIt=s encouraging that the average and
median have increased significantly as it was always going to be
challenging offering 150 horses more than last year=s record-
breaking sale. The clearance rate is disappointing and that is
something we will be working hard to increase over the coming
day. Traditionally at this sale we have seen the second day
increase in strength and we hope to see that trend continue
tomorrow.@

VADAMOS TO SHUTTLE TO NEW ZEALAND Group 1-winning miler Vadamos (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}) will
shuttle to Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand after the stud, with the
support of a high-profile group of New Zealand breeders,
purchased a 50% share in the 5-year-old. Among those breeders
are Sir Peter Vela of Pencarrow Stud, Greg Tomlinson of Nearco
Stud and Kevin Hickman of Valachi Downs. John Camilleri of
Fairway
Thoroughbreds,
breeder of Winx
(Aus) (Street Cry
{Ire}) and Vancouver
(Aus) (Medaglia
d=Oro), and Andrea
Putsch of Haras de
Saint Pair in France,
raced Vadamos and
remain part of the
ownership, and will support him with mares.
"To get this son of Monsun is unbelievable," said Rich Hill=s
John Thompson. "He's from one of the Aga Khan's great families
and he's one of the best bred Group 1-winning stallions going to
stud anywhere in the world."
Vadamos retires to Ireland=s Tally-Ho Stud next year off a
campaign that saw him win Chantilly=s G1 Prix du Moulin over a
mile in addition to the G2 Prix du Muguet and G3 Prix Messidor
over the same distance. He was also second in the G1 Prix
Jacques le Marois. The Andre Fabre trainee traveled Down
Under to contest the G1 Cox Plate and G1 Emirates S., and
finished a creditable fourth on both occasions after racing too
keen early.
WALLER REVEALS WINX AUTUMN PLANS Australian Horse of the Year Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) looks
unlikely to race overseas next season, with trainer Chris Waller
telling Racing.com the 5-year-old mare=s autumn campaign will
look similar to this year=s, culminating in a run at The
Championships in April.
Winx, who ran her unbeaten streak to 13 and defended her
G1 Cox Plate title with a scarcely believable eight-length romp
when last seen Oct. 22, is currently enjoying a spell.
"She'll be back in [the stable] midway through December
gearing up for another very important preparation, which I think
will lead to four runs through the autumn starting off in the [G2]
Apollo, [G1] Chipping Norton, [G1] George Ryder and then the
[G1] Queen Elizabeth," Waller told Racing.com. "She never
really had a proper spell last time because she had an operation
and was confined to a stable for four weeks. After that, she had
a pretty strict rehab and recovery and so she's enjoying the
luxury of a nice grass paddock, the sun on her back and being a
lady of leisure."
That plan would
see Winx open her
campaign with the
same three races she
won last season en
route to a win in the
A$3-million G1
Doncaster Mile at
The Championships.
Next season=s plan
would see Winx wait
until the second weekend of The Championships and take in the
A$4-million Queen Elizabeth over 2000 metres.
Talks of an overseas campaign for the great mare were
bandied about by connections and the press alike after Winx=s
Cox Plate win, and Waller said on Wednesday, "Yeah, it would
be great to go with her to Hong Kong, it would be great to go to
Dubai, it would be great to go to Japan, it would be great to go
to England and France but you can't go everywhere and that
decision is made a lot easier when you have so many great races
in Australia. I guess you could say the Australian racing calendar
is doing a good job looking after its own because we've got
enough good racing that we've got nothing left at the end of a
long Spring Carnival. Perth's offering some good prizemoney and
the autumn comes around so quick so Australia's probably doing
a good job in looking after their own horses."
HUNTER BREEDERS CONTINUE MINE FIGHT The Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders will front a fourth
Planning Assessment Commission in search of protection from a
proposed coal mining site in the heart of the Thoroughbred
capital of Australia, and within a kilometre of both Coolmore
Australia and Darley=s Woodlands Stud.
AThe PAC=s decision on this one mine will determine our
future. We are not anti-mining, but we cannot stand by and let
the NSW Planning process destroy our industry,@ said Dr.
Cameron Collins, president of the Hunter Thoroughbred
Breeders Association. AA mine on the Drayton South site, less
than one kilometre from Australia=s and the world=s market
Thoroughbred leaders, should never be allowed.@
The HTB has stated approval of the mine would lead to the
loss of at least 640 jobs in the Thoroughbred breeding industry.

Hunter Breeders Continue Mine Fight Cont.
AWhen he visited the studs in April 2015, Premier Baird said
that >mining cannot go everywhere,= and >co-existence is not
co-existence without boundaries,=@ Collins noted. AThis process
has dragged on for nearly six years now. Many promises for
protection have been made but none have been delivered. The
time has come for the Government to show some leadership. If
this fourth PAC rejects the Drayton South mine proposal, the
Government needs to act swiftly to prohibit mining on this site,
protect the Hunter=s Equine Critical Industry Cluster and end
uncertainty and land use conflict in the Hunter.@
Four previous PACs have concluded that international scale
Thoroughbred breeding and mining are incompatible land uses
in close proximity. Three previous Drayton South PAC=s have
recommended the highest protection be afforded to
Thoroughbred farms. The most recent Review PAC
recommended the NSW Government develop and enforce
appropriate buffers, exclusion zones or preservation measures
to protect the Thoroughbred industry.

POLAR RIVER BACK TO WORK IN DUBAIby Alan Carasso
>TDN Rising Star= Polar River (Congrats), unraced since a
narrow defeat at the hands of subsequent US Classic-placed Lani
(Tapit) in the G2 UAE Derby Mar. 26, makes a much-anticipated
return to the races in a 1600-metre rated conditions event
Thursday evening at Meydan Racecourse.
Accorded Rising Star status off a 13 1/2-length victory in near
track-record time on debut last December, Polar River won the
Listed UAE Oaks by 13
lengths and added a win in
the G3 UAE Oaks before
tasting defeat for the first
time on the World Cup
undercard. She was
rumored as a possibility for
races like the GI Kentucky
Oaks and GI Acorn S. last
spring, but connections
ultimately elected to ditch those plans in favor of a spell.
AShe is a lovely filly and was a real star last season,@ said
trainer Doug Watson. AHer work has been very good and she is,
basically, ready for a race. She has a lot of weight to carry but
her early season options are limited and this looked the ideal
start point. She is one we are really looking forward to this
season.@
Polar River, a $25,000 Keeneland September yearling turned
$40,000 OBS April juvenile, will jump from gate nine in a
10-horse field with post time set for 8:50 p.m local time (11:50

WORLD-CLASS JOCKS LINE UP FOR IJCby Alan Carasso
A dozen of the world=s top jockeys will vie for first prize money
of HK$500,000 in the Longines International Jockeys=
Championship, to be staged at iconic Happy Valley Racecourse
on Hong Kong Island Wednesday evening, Dec. 7.
Four locally based riders, including the record-setting Joao
Moreira, will square off against eight of their overseas
counterparts in the four-race series, in which the contestants
earn points for finishing in the top four on a 12-6-4-1 scale.
AThe Longines IJC is established as perhaps the world=s
toughest jockey challenge,@ commented Andrew Harding, the
Hong Kong Jockey Club=s Executive Director, Racing Authority. AIt
brings together some of the world=s very best riders and pitches
them into a thrilling contest around Happy Valley=s floodlit
arena, a track that is as stunning to behold as it is testing to ride
around.@ Cont. p13
