VENTINGINTRODUCTION

The following vent systems in combination withthe Tara Direct Vent Freestanding Gas Stove, have been tested and listed as direct ventheater systems by Warnock Hersey:

1) The Minimum Horizontal Termination withthe DV Stove Horizontal Riser Vent Kit(Part# 640-944)

2) Vertical Termination using Co-Linear FlexSystem

3) The DV Stove Horizontal Vent Kit

4) The Simpson Dura-Vent Direct Vent Sys-tem Model DV-GS venting systems

The Tara uses the "balanced flue" technologyCo-Axial system. The inner liner vents productsof combustion to the outside while the outerpipe draws outside combustion air into thecombustion chamber thereby eliminating theneed to use heated room air for combustion andlosing warm room air up the chimney.

Note: These flue pipes must not be con-nected to any other appliance.

The gas appliance and vent system must bevented directly to the outside of the building, andnever be attached to a chimney serving aseparate solid fuel or gas burning appliance. Each direct vent gas appliance must use it'sown separate vent system. Common vent sys-tems are prohibited.

IMPORTANT

Read all instructions carefully before startingthe installation. Failure to follow these instruc-tions may create a fire or other safety hazard, and will void the warranty. Be sure to check theventing and clearance to combustible require-ments. Consult your local building codesbefore beginning installation.

The location of the termination cap must con-form to the requirements in the Exterior VentTerminal Locations diagram on page 10.

INSTALLATIONPRECAUTIONS

These venting systems are engineered prod-ucts that have been designed and tested foruse with the Tara. The warranty will be voidedand serious fire, health or other safety haz-ards may result from any of the followingactions:

1) Installation of any damaged Direct Ventcomponent

2) Unauthorized modification of the DirectVent System

3) Installation of any component part not man-ufactured or approved by Simpson Dura-Vent or Fireplace Products InternationalLtd.

4) Installation other than as instructed bySimpson Dura-Vent and Fireplace Prod-ucts International Ltd.

Warning: Always maintain requiredclearances (air spaces) to nearbycombustibles to prevent a fire haz-ard. Do not fill air spaces with insu-lation.

Be sure to check the vent termination clear-ance requirements from decks, windows, soffits, gas regulators, air supply inlets andpublic walkways as specified in the ExteriorVent Terminal Locations on page 9 and in yourlocal building codes.

The gas appliance and vent system mustbe vented directly to the outside of thebuilding, and never be attached to a chim-ney serving a separate solid fuel or gas-burning appliance. Each direct vent gasappliance must use it's own separate ventsystem. Common vent systems are prohibited.

SAFETYPRECAUTIONS FOR

THE INSTALLER

1) Wear gloves and safety glasses for pro-tection.

2) Exercise extreme caution when using lad-ders or on roof tops.

3) Be aware of electrical wiring locations inwalls and ceilings.

COMBUSTION ANDVENTILATION AIR

The combustion air from this appliance is drawnfrom outside the building through the outer flue.Extra provision for combustion air insidethe room is not required.

Before cutting the venthole through the wall ensure that ALL vent andtermination clearances (see page 10) will bemet.

The venting arrangements shown on the dia-gram, have a minimum of 75% (flue loss)efficiency with Fan Off, as required for man-ufactured homes. (Actual efficiency may be ashigh as 85%.)

*If this is an outside corner, the minimum dis-tance between the vent and the outside corneris 6" (15cm). See "F" on the diagram on page 10.

NOTE: Ensure compliance with the outside ventterminal location before cutting hole as bothdimensions must be met.

Note: These are the minimum pieces re-quired. Other parts may be requiredfor your particular installation.

HORIZONTALINSTALLATIONS

1) Set the unit in its desired location. Check todetermine if wall studs are in the way whenthe venting system is attached. If this is thecase, you may want to adjust the locationof the unit.

2) Assemble the desired combination of pipeand elbow to the appliance adapter withpipe seams oriented down. Offset the pipeseams as double seams in one place willcause the outer pipe to take an oval shape.Kit comes complete with 18" of straight vent- 6-5/8" dia. black outer pipe and 4" dia. innervent.

3) With the pipe attached to the stove, slide thestove into its correct location, and mark thewall for a 9-1/2" (inside dimensions) roundhole. The center of the round hole shouldline up with the centerline of the horizontalpipe, as shown in diagram 1. Cut and framethe 9-1/2 round hole in the exterior wallwhere the vent will be terminated. If the wallbeing penetrated is constructed of non-combustible material, i.e. masonry block orconcrete, a 7" diameter hole is acceptable.

Note:

a) The horizontal run of vent should have a 1/4 inch rise for every 1 foot of run towardsthe termination. Never allow the vent to rundownward. This could cause high temper-atures and may present the possibility of afire.

b) The location of the horizontal vent termina-tion on an exterior wall must meet all localand national building codes, and must not beblocked or obstructed. For External VentTerminal Locations, see diagram on page 9.

c) Snorkel Terminations:For installations requiring a vertical rise onthe exterior of the building, 14-inch and 36-inch tall Snorkel Terminations as shown inDia. 2 are available, as well as the standardRiser Vent. Follow the same installationprocedures as used for standard Horizon-tal Termination. NEVER install the snorkelupside down.

*Dia 2a & 2b: As speci-fied in CGA B149 Instal-lation Code. Local codesor regulations may re-quire different clearanc-es.

NOTE: For Snorkel terminations in ABOVEgrade installations, follow nationalor local code requirements.

Below Grade Snorkel InstallationIf the Snorkel Termination must be installedbelow grade, i.e. basement application, proper drainage must be provided to pre-vent water from entering the Snorkel Ter-mination. Refer to Dura-Vent Installationinstructions for details.. Do not attempt toenclose the Snorkel within the wall, or anyother type of enclosure.

4) Install wall penetration heat shield in thecenter of the 9-1/2" round hole and attachwith wood screws. The four wood screwsprovided should be replaced with appropri-ate fasteners for stucco, brick, concrete,or other types of sidings. Dia. 3.

5) If installing termination on a siding coveredwall, a vinyl siding standoff or furring stripsmust be used to ensure that the terminationis not recessed into the siding. Dia. 3.

6) Take the Riser Vent terminal and separatethe Backing Plate from the Riser Vent Frontby removing 8 screws as shown in dia-gram 4.

7) Install the Backing Plate into the wall pene-tration heat shield and attach using 4screws. Dia. 4.

8) Connect all pipe sections to unit and installinto wall:

a) Measure pipe length required and cut tolength. Hint: use the cut end of the 6-5/8" dia.outer pipe at the vent terminal end.

b) Push the pipe sections completely together, the minimum pipe overlap is 1-1/4". Secureall outer pipe joints by using at least twoscrews. Locate the screws at the bottomof the pipe so that the screw heads arehidden on the final installation. Apply seal-ant "Mill-Pac" to inner pipe and high tempsilicone sealant or "Mill-Pac" to outer pipe onevery joint.

VERTICAL TERMINATION WITHCO-LINEAR FLEX SYSTEM

This appliance is designed to be attached totwo 3" (76mm) co-linear aluminium flex runningthe full length of the chimney. The flue lengthmust be a minimum length of 8 ' (2.44m) and amaximum of 35' (10.7m). See chart for minimumdistances from roof. Periodically check that thevent is unrestricted.

Masonry chimneys may takevarious contours which theflexible liner will accommo-date. However, keep theflexible liner as straightas possible , avoid unnec-essary bending.

The Air Intake pipe must be attached to the inletair collar of the termination cap.

Diagram 5

c) Before connecting the vent pipe to the venttermination, slide the black decorative wallthimble cover over the vent pipe, then slidethe Wall Penetration Heat Shield (Part #946-202) over the vent pipe. Dia. 3.

d) Slide the appliance and vent assemblytowards the wall carefully inserting thevent pipe into the riser vent terminal assem-bly. It is important that the vent pipe extendsinto the Riser Vent Backing Plate a suffi-cient distance so as to result in a minimumpipe overlap of 1-1/4 inches. Secure theconnection between the vent pipe and thevent cap by attaching the two sheet metalstrips extending from the Riser Vent Back-ing Plate into the outer wall of the vent pipe.Use two aluminum screws provided toconnect the strips to the pipe section. Bendany remaining portion of the sheet metalstrip back towards the vent cap and cut offany excess, it will be concealed by thedecorative wall thimble cover. See diagram5.

Review the following sequence of instructionswhich are typical of most installations. Thesequence may vary depending on wall thick-ness. Refer to pages 11 to 18 for ventlocation and clearance dimensions.

1) Set the unit in its desired location. Check todetermine if wall studs will be in the way ofthe venting system, adjust location until allclearances are met and there are no ob-structions.

c) Attach the 2 piece adjustable pipesection to the vent terminal and slideinto position from the exterior. Thelarger diameter end of the ad-justable pipe goes to the ventterminal.

d) Install the 90o elbow onto the adjusta-ble pipe to determine the verticalcenterline.

Note: if the centerline cannot bemet, the adjustable sections willhave to be cut.

e) Cut the 2 ft. or 4 ft. section of rigid pipeto length. Attach the 45o elbow to therigid pipe, and ensure that the pipelength when cut (with the 45o elbow)will seat onto both the starter collarand the 90o elbow. Crimped sec-tion of rigid pipe seats into the 90o

elbow. Only cut the uncrimpedside of pipe.

Dismantle all pipe sections including ventterminal.

3) Attach the 4" dia. flex liner to the ventterminal ensuring that the flex overlapsthe collar of the vent terminal by a minimum

Note: A 1-1/2"(38mm) clearance aroundthe outer pipe must be maintainedexcept that only a 1" (25mm) clear-ance is needed at the terminationend.

IMPORTANT:Do not locate termination hoodwhere excessive snow or ice build-up may occur. Be sure to checkvent termination area after snowfalls, and clear to prevent acciden-tal blockage of venting system. When using snow blowers, makesure snow is not directed towardsvent termination area.

2) Assemble a trial fit to determine the ver-tical center-line for the vent termination.

a) Cut a 9-1/2" x 9-1/2" (241mm x 241 mm)square hole on both the interior andexterior wall.

RIGID PIPE VENTING - VERTICAL TERMINATIONSfor both Residential & Manufactured Homes/Mobile Homes

The shaded areas in the two diagrams below show all allowable combinations of straight vertical and offset to vertical runs withvertical terminations. Maximum two 45o elbows (not including the 45o elbow attached to the unit.). All vertical and offset to verticalvent installations require Vent Restrictor #1. If the vent is ENCLOSED in a chase (min. size 9" x 9") maintain a 1-1/4" clearance to combustibles.

Offset to Vertical TerminationsVent Restrictor must be set at 5/8" for this venting installation.

Straight VerticalTerminations

RIGID PIPE VENTING -HORIZONTAL TERMINATIONS

The shaded area in the diagram below shows all allowable combinationsof vertical runs with horizontal terminations. Maximum one 90O elbow(two 45o elbows equal one 90o elbow) using Dura-Vent Venting Systems

Residential and Manufactured Homes /Mobile Homes Installations

The venting arrangements diagrammed below, have a minimum of 75% (flue loss)efficiency with Fan Off, as required for manufactured homes. (Actual efficiencymay be as high as 85%.)

b) Horizontal runs of vent must be sup-ported every three feet. Wall strapsare available for this purpose.

3) With the pipe attached to the stove, slidethe stove into its correct location, and markthe wall for a 10" x 10" (inside dimensions)square hole. The center of the square holeshould line up with the centerline of thehorizontal pipe. Cut and frame the 10 inchsquare hole in the exterior wall where thevent will be terminated. If the wall beingpenetrated is constructed of non-combus-tible material, i.e. masonry block or con-crete, a 7" diameter hole is acceptable.

Note:a) The horizontal run of vent should

have a 1/4 inch rise for every 1 footof run towards the termination. Nev-er allow the vent to run downward. This could cause high temperaturesand may present the possibility of afire.

b) The location of the horizontal venttermination on an exterior wall mustmeet all local and national buildingcodes, and must not be blocked orobstructed. For External Vent Ter-minal Locations, see diagram onpage 10.

4) If installing the vent termination to a wallwith vinyl siding, the Vinyl Siding Standoffmust be used. Attach the Vinyl Siding

DURA-VENTHORIZONTAL

INSTALLATIONS

1) Set the unit in its desired location. Check todetermine if wall studs or roof rafters arein the way when the venting system isattached. If this is the case, you may wantto adjust the location of the unit.

2) Direct Vent pipe and fittings are designedwith special twist-lock connections to con-nect the venting system to the applianceflue outlet. A twist-lock appliance adapteris installed on the unit at the factory. Assem-ble the desired combinationof pipe and elbows to theappliance adapter with pipeseams oriented towards thewall or ceiling, as muchout of view as possible. The final positioning ofthe pipe and 90o elbowassembly is determinedby the mounting orienta-tion of the adapter onthe stove and twist-l o c k e dfor a sol-id con-nection.

Diagram 1

Note:a) Twist-lock procedure: Four indenta-

tions, located on the female ends ofpipes and fittings, are designed toslide straight onto the male ends ofadjacent pipes and fittings, by ori-enting the four pipe indentations sothey match and slide in to the fourentry slots on the male ends (dia-gram 1). Push the pipe sections com-pletely together, then twist-lock onesection clockwise approximatelyone-quarter turn, until the two sec-tions are fully locked. The femalelocking lugs will not be visible fromthe outside on the Black Pipe orfittings. They may be located byexamining the inside of the femaleends. Apply sealant "Mill-Pac" to in-ner pipe and high temp silicone seal-ant to outer pipe on every twist-lockjoint.

Hint: Applysilicone tof e m a l eend.

Standoff to the Horizontal Vent Termination, but first run a bead of non-hardening masticaround its outside edges, so as to make aseal between vent cap and the standoff.Install the Vinyl Siding Standoff (Part # 950)between the vent cap and the exterior walland attach with the four wood screwsprovided. Seal around the Vinyl Siding Stand-off on all four sides. Diagram 2. The arrowon the vent cap should be pointing up.Insure that the 1-1/4" clearances to com-bustible materials are maintained. See dia-gram 2.

VENT RESTRICTOR

The above Offset to Vertical Installation re-quires more restriction, the Vent Restrictor mustbe set to 5/8" (16mm).

The Vent Restrictor on the stove comes presetwith a 7/8" (22mm) opening. The Vent Restrictoris located inside the firebox over the flue outlet.

To adjust the restrictor simply use a large phillipsscrewdriver to loosen the 2 retaining screwsand slide the restrictor up to a 5/8" gap. Tightenthe screws to secure it in position.

INSTALLATION

Note: If installing termination on a sidingcovered wall, a vinyl siding stand-off or furring strips must be usedto ensure that the termination isnot recessed into the siding. Thefour wood screws providedshould be replaced with appropri-ate fasteners for stucco, brick, concrete, or other types of sid-ings.

5) Before connecting the horizontal run ofvent pipe to the vent termination, slide theblack decorative wall thimble cover overthe vent pipe, then slide the Wall Thimble(Part # 942) over the vent pipe.

6) Slide the appliance and vent assembly to-wards the wall carefully inserting the ventpipe into the vent cap assembly. It is impor-tant that the vent pipe extends into the ventcap a sufficient distance so as to result ina minimum pipe overlap of 1-1/4 inches.

5) Cut a hole in the roof centred on the smalldrilled hole placed in the roof in Step 2. Thehole should be of sufficient size to meet theminimum requirements for clearance to com-bustibles of 1-1/4". Slip the flashing underthe shingles (shingles should overlap halfthe flashing) as per diagram 8.

DURA-VENT VERTICALTERMINATION

Secure the connection between the ventpipe and the vent cap by attaching the twosheet metal strips extending from the ventcap assembly into the outer wall of the ventpipe. Use the two sheet metal screwsprovided to connect the strips to the pipe.Bend any remaining portion of the sheetmetal strip back towards the vent cap, soit will be concealed by the decorative wallthimble cover. See diagram 3.

7) Install wall thimble in the center of the 10"square and attach with wood screws.

8) Slide the decorative wall thimble up to thewall surface being careful not to scratchthe paint and attach with screws provided.Apply decorative brass or chrome trim ifdesired. See diagram 4.

Note: Applysealant "Mill-Pac"to inner pipe andhigh temp sili-cone sealant or"Mill-Pac" to out-er pipe on everyjoint.

Diagram 4

1) Maintain the 1-1/4" clearanc-es (air spaces) to combus-tibles when passing throughceilings, walls, roofs, enclo-sures, attic rafter, or othernearby combustible surfac-es. Do not pack air spaceswith insulation. Check page16 for the maximum verticalrise of the venting systemand the maximum horizontaloffset limitations.

2) Set the gas appliance in itsdesired location. Drop a plumbbob down from the ceiling tothe position of the applianceflue exit, and mark the loca-tion where the vent will pen-etrate the ceiling. Drill asmall hole at his point. Next, drop a plumb bob from theroof to the hole previouslydrilled in the ceiling, andmark the spot where thevent will penetrate theroof. Determine if ceilingjoists, roof rafters or otherframing will obstruct the vent-ing system. You may wish to relocate theappliance or to offset, as shown in diagram6 to avoid cutting load bearing members.

4) Assemble the desired lengths of black pipeand elbows necessary to reach from theappliance adapter up though the RoundSupport Box. Insure that all pipes andelbow connections are in the fully twist-locked position and sealed.

3) To install the Round Support Box/Wall Thim-ble in a flat ceiling, cut a 10 inch square holein the ceiling centred on the hole drilled inStep 2. Frame the hole as shown in diagram7.

6) Continue to assemble pipe lengths.

Note: If an offset is necessary in the atticto avoid obstructions, it is impor-tant to support the vent pipe every3 feet, to avoid excessive stresson the elbows, and possible sep-aration. Wall straps are availablefor this purpose. See diagram 4.

Galvanized pipe and elbows may be utilizedin the attic as well as above the roofline. Thegalvanized finish is desirable above theroofline due to its higher corrosion resist-ance.

Continue to add pipe sections through theflashing until the height of the vent capmeets the minimum height requirementsspecified in diagram 9 or local codes. Notethat for steep roof pitches, the verticalheight must be increased. A poor draft, ordown drafting can result from high windconditions near big trees or adjoining rooflines, in these cases, increasing the ventheight may solve the problem.

7) Ensure vent is vertical and secure the baseof the flashing to the roof with roofing rails, slide storm collar over the pipe section andseal with a mastic.

8) Install the vertical termination cap by twistlocking it.

Notes:a) For multistorey vertical installations,

a Ceiling Fire stop (Part # 963) isrequired at the second floor, andany subsequent floor. Diagram 10.The opening should be framed to 10" x 10" inside dimensions, in thesame manner as shown in diagram7.

CATHEDRAL CEILINGS

Round Support (RDS) &Square Support (SQS)

If your home has a cathedral ceiling (no atticspace between the ceiling and the roof), installthe chimney and support as follows.

1) Situate the chimney in a convenient locationas near as possible to the appliance outlet.Cut and frame a hole in the roof for thesupport. The sides of this hole must bevertical with 1 1/4" clearance.

2) Place the support in the opening. Lower itto the correct height as determined by thetable and diagram below.

Using a level, make sure the support isvertical. If the support extends above theroof, cut it flush with the top of the roof.Nail the support to the frame opening using(8) 3" spiral nails or #8 x 1-1/2" screws.

Note: If you are using a 6" square sup-port you may find it difficult toscrew it in place because it is fairlysmall inside.

Simpson Dura-Vent has provided anglebrackets with this support which can bescrewed to the outside of the support boxand nailed to surrounding framing as re-quired. Use a minimum of four #8 x 1/2"screws per bracket. In some cases thesebrackets may need to be trimmed (e.g.: tofit under a flashing). Place the Finish Collararound the support and fasten it to theceiling using the screws provided.

3) Use appropriate roof flashing. Place theflashing under the upper shingles and ontop of the lower shingles approximately halfof the flashing should be under the shin-gles.

4) Assemble the desired lengths of Black Pipeand Elbows necessary to reach from theappliance adapter up through the supportbox and flashing to proper height as per Dia.12, local codes or page 16. Ensure that allpipe and elbow connections are in their fullytwist lock position.

5) Ensure vent is vertical and secure flashingto the roof with roofing nails. Slide the stormcollar over the pipe section and seal with amastic.

6) Twist lock the vent cap on to the lastsection.

Steep pitched cathedral ceilings may require theuse of a support extension. This piece fits downinside the support and can be adjusted to in-crease the support's length by up to 22". Theextension is attached to the support using theeight metal screws provided. Be sure there isat least a 2 inch overlap where the extensionjoins the support.

CONVERTING ACLASS-A METAL

CHIMNEY ORMASONRY CHIMNEYTO A DIRECT VENT

SYSTEM

General

There are two different types of direct ventconversion systems listed below. Follow theappropriate directions for your installation.

A) Through an existing factory built metalchimney going through the ceiling: A typicalconversion of this type is shown in diagram1. The concept of direct vent conversion isto connect an adaptor to an UnderwritersLaboratories (UL) listed 4 inch diameteraluminum flex pipe which is then passeddown through the center of the existingmetal chimney system. Three sizes of TopAdaptors are available from Simpson Dura-Vent. The Retro Connector (909B) is at-tached to the bottom of the flex pipe. TheTop Adaptor and the Retro Connector areattached to the existing chimney with sheetmetal screws. The appliance is then con-nected to the chimney with appropriateblack direct vent pipe and an adjustablelength section.

B) Through the wall of an existing masonrychimney: A typical conversion of an exist-ing masonry chimney is shown in Diagram6. A Top Adaptor (985K) and Flashing areused at the top of the masonry chimney. The 4 inch aluminum liner is connected tothe adaptor and is passed down the chim-ney and out through the masonry wall andattached to the Retro Connector (909B).The Retro Connector is attached to themasonry wall and then connected to thedirect vent pipe leading to the appliance.

Prior to installation and connection of thevent system to a factory-built or mason-ry chimney, the chimney must be in-spected and thoroughly cleaned by aqualified service person, such as a cer-tified chimney sweep or home inspec-tion service.

Converting a Masonry Chimney

Important: The existing masonry flueopening needs to have an area of at leasta 36 sq. in. to insure proper intake/ex-haust flow.

1) Before cutting any holes, assemble thedesired sections of black direct vent pipe todetermine the center of the masonry pene-tration.

Diagram 62) Once the center point of the penetration has

been determined, cut a 6" (152mm) dia. holein the masonry. Be careful, if the hole is toolarge, the Retro Connector might not mountproperly, and if the hole is too small, then theappliance might starve for intake air. If thereis a frame wall in front of the masonry wall, cut and frame a 10" (254mm) clear squareopening in the wall (centered around the 6"(152mm) masonry opening). IF there issheet rock only (no studs) in front of themasonry, the 10" (254mm) clear opening isstill needed, but does not need to be framed. This allows the Retro Connector to mountdirectly on the masonry and provide clear-ance to the combustibles. Diagram 11.

3) Secure the Flashing (Part # 705C) to the topof the masonry chimney using a bead ofnon-hardening sealant-adhesive. If theFlashing is larger than the top of the chim-ney, then cut and fold flashing as neededto fit chimney. Diagram 7.

Diagram 3

Diagram 4

Diagram 5

4) Pass the flex pipe down through the centerof the chimney system, and center theadaptor on the top of the chimney pipe. Drillfour 1/8" diameter holes through the adap-tor and into the chimney top. Insure that youare in fact, drilling into the metal on thechimney. Twist-lock the Termination Cap(Part# 980 or 991) onto the Adaptor. (Dia-gram 3 and 4).

5) Pull the flex pipe down through the ceilingsupport box, until it protrudes approximate-ly 3" (76mm). Connect the flex pipe to theRetro Connector by slipping it into the4-3/4" diameter sleeve on the top side of theConnector. Use 3 sheet metal screws toassemble these two parts.

6) Push the flex pipe back up into the ceilingsupport box, center the Retro Connector, and attach it to the support box, or decora-tive sleeve for double wall solid packedpipe, with the sheet metal screws (sup-plied). The holes in the Retro Connector arepre-punched. Diagram 5.

7) The connection between the appliance andthe Retro Connector may be completedwith sections of black direct vent pipe, together with an adjustable length.

3) Connect the end of theflex pipe section to theunderside of the TopAdaptor using 3 sheetmetal screws.Diagram 2.

Diagram 1

Diagram 2

The direct vent system must not be con-nected to a damaged factory-built or ma-sonry chimney.

For factory built, zero clearance, and ma-sonry chimneys cleanout doors and capsor plugs for cleanout tee fittings and ashdumps shall be secured in place andsealed before installing a Direct Ventsystem within the chimney.

If the appliance shuts off during opera-tion, contact a qualified service person todetermine if a negative pressure and/orleaky chimney condition exists. Do notoperate the appliance until the problemis corrected.

Approved for US Installations OnlyThe use of an existing chimney as an airintake is not covered under the ANSIZ21.88b-1999, CSA 2.33b-M99 test meth-ods and the resulting ITS/WHI productcertification. The code Authority HavingJurisdiction must be consulted prior toproceeding with this installation method.

Converting a Factory BuiltMetal Chimney

1) Remove the existing chimney cap.

2) Measure the distance from the top end ofthe chimney to the bottom of the ceilingsupport box, add 3" (76mm) to this meas-urement, and cut a section of the 4" flex pipeto that length (the flex should already beextended to its nominal length).

INSTALLATION

GAS PIPEPRESSURE TESTING

The appliance must be isolated from the gassupply piping system by closing its individualmanual shut-off valve during any pressuretesting of the gas supply piping system at testpressures equal to or less than 1/2 psig. (3.45kPa). Disconnect piping from valve at pres-sures over 1/2 psig. The manifold pressure iscontrolled by a regulator built into the gascontrol, and should be checked at the pressuretest point.

Note: To properly check gas pressure, both inlet and manifold pressuresshould be checked using the valvepressure ports on the valve.

1) Make sure the valve is in the "OFF" position.

2) Loosen the "IN" and/or "OUT" pressuretap(s), turning counterclockwise with a 1/8" wide flat screwdriver.

3) Attach manometer to "IN" and/or "OUT"pressure tap(s) using a 5/16" ID hose.

4) Light the pilot and turn the valve to "ON"position. Read manometer.

5) The pressure check should be carried outwith the unit burning and the setting shouldbe within the limits specified on the safetylabel.

6) When finished reading manometer, turn offthe gas valve, disconnect the hose andtighten the screw (clockwise) with a 1/8"flat screwdriver. Note: Screw should besnug, but do not over tighten

GAS CONNECTION

The gas connection is a 3/8" NPT 90o elbow. Thegas line can be rigid pipe or to make installationeasier, use a listed flexible connector and/orcopper tubing if allowed by local codes. Sincesome municipalities have additional local codesit is always best to consult with your localauthorities and the CAN/CGA B149 installationcodes.

For USA installations follow local codes and/orthe current National Fuel Gas Code, ANSIZ223.1.

The gas control valve is under the unit, behindthe drop down door and control panel. The gasinlet is located on the left side of the unit (viewedfrom the front). The inlet fitting is a 3/8" maleflare.

When using copper or flex connectors use onlyapproved fittings. Always provide a union sothat gas lines can be easily disconnected forburner and/or valve servicing. Flare nuts forcopper lines and flex connectors are usuallyconsidered to meet this requirement.

Important: Always check for gasleaks with a soap and water solu-tion or gas leak detector. Do not useopen flame for leak testing.

Note: Prior to any pressure testingof the gas supply piping system thatexceeds test pressures of 1/2 psig, this appliance must be disconnect-ed from the piping system. If testpressures equal to or less than 1/2psig are used then this appliancemust be isolated from the pipingsystem by closing its individual man-ual shut-off valve during the testing.

FIRST FIRE

The first fire in your stove is part of the paintcuring process. To ensure that the paint isproperly cured, it is recommended that youburn your fireplace for at least four (4) hoursthe first time you use it with the fan on.

When first operated, the unit will release anodour caused by the curing of the paint, theburning off of any oils remaining from manufac-

turing. Smoke detectors in the house may go offat this time. Open a few windows to ventilatethe room for a couple of hours.

The glass panel may require cleaning after theunit has cooled down. DO NOT ATTEMPT TOCLEAN THE GLASS WHILE IT IS HOT.

DO NOT BURN THE APPLIANCEWITHOUT THE GLASS FRONT INPLACE.

AUTOMATICCONVECTION FAN

The fan operates automatically - turn the knobat the top right rear corner to adjust to thedesired speed. The fan will turn on as the stovecomes up to operating temperature. After theunit has been turned off and the unit cooled tobelow a useful heat output range the fan willshut off automatically.

ADJUSTING FLAMEHEIGHT

Your heater has an adjustable flame to tailor thelook and heat output to your specific needs. Itis adjusted by turning the flame adjustment dialon the gas control valve.

Turn counterclockwise to adjust the flamehigher, clockwise for a lower flame.

During the first few fires, a white filmmay develop on the glass front as partof the curing process. The glass shouldbe cleaned or the film will bake on andbecome very difficult to remove. Use anon-abrasive cleaner and NEVER cleanthe glass while it is hot.

NORMAL OPERATINGSOUNDS OF

GAS APPLIANCES

It is possible that you will hear some soundsfrom your gas appliance. This is perfectlynormal due to the fact that there are variousgauges and types of steel used within yourappliance. Listed below are some examples. Allare normal operating sounds and shouldnot be considered as defects in your appliance.

Blower:Waterford gas appliances use high tech blow-ers to push heated air farther into the room. Itis not unusual for the fan to make a "whirring"sound when ON. This sound will increase ordecrease in volume depending on the speedsetting of your fan speed control.

Burner Tray:The burner tray is positioned directly under theburner tube(s) and logs and is made of adifferent gauge material from the rest of thefirebox and body. Therefore, the varying thick-nesses of steel will expand and contract atslightly different rates which can cause "tick-ing" and "cracking" sounds. You should also beaware that as there are temperature changeswithin the unit these sounds will likely re-occur.Again, this is normal for steel fireboxes.

Blower Thermodisc:When this thermally activated switch turns ONit will create a small "clicking" sound. This is theswitch contacts closing and is normal.

Pilot Flame:While the pilot flame is on it can make a veryslight "whisper" sound.

Gas Control Valve:As the gas control valve turns ON and OFF, adull clicking sound may be audible, this is normaloperation of a gas regulator or valve.

Unit Body/Firebox:Different types and thicknesses of steel willexpand and contract at different rates resultingin some "cracking" and "ticking" sounds will beheard throughout the cycling process.

MAINTENANCEINSTRUCTIONS

1) Always turn off the valve before cleaning. For relighting, refer to lighting instructions.Keep the burner and control compartmentclean by brushing and vacuuming at leastonce a year. When cleaning the logs, usea soft clean paint brush as the logs arefragile and easily damaged.

2) Clean glass (never when unit is hot), appli-ance, and door with a damp cloth. Neveruse an abrasive cleaner.

The porcelain enamel finished stoves maybe cleaned with ordinary household glasscleaner and a soft cloth or paper towel.Never clean when unit is hot and never usean abrasive cleaner.

3) The heater is finished in a porcelain finishor with a heat resistant paint and shouldonly be refinished with heat resistant paint(not with wall paint). Waterford uses Stove-Bright Paint - Metallic Black #6309.

Never use an abrasive cleaner on theporcelain finish as it may scratch the sur-face.

4) Make a periodic check of burner for properposition and condition. Visually check theflame of the burner periodically, makingsure the flames are steady; not lifting orfloating. If there is a problem, call a qualifiedservice person.

5) Caution: Label all wires prior to disconnec-tion when servicing controls. Wiring errorscan cause improper and dangerous oper-ation.

6) The appliance and venting system must beinspected before use, and at least annual-ly, by a qualified field service person, toensure that the flow of combustion andventilation air is not obstructed.During the annual service call, the burnersshould be removed from the burner trayand cleaned. Replace the embers but donot block the pilot.

7) Keep the area near the appliance clear andfree from combustible materials, gasoline, and other flammable vapours and liquids.

Top View of pilot flame

Incorrect flame pattern will have small, probablyyellow flames, not coming into proper contactwith the rear of the burner or thermopile.

CAUTION: ANY SAFETY SCREENOR GUARD REMOVED FOR SERV-ICING AN APPLIANCE MUST BEREPLACED PRIOR TO OPERAT-ING THE APPLIANCE.

8) Each time the appliance is lit, it may causecondensation and fog the glass. This con-densation and fog is normal and will disap-pear in a few minutes as the glass heats up.

Never operate the appliance withoutthe glass properly secured in place orwith the door open.

9) Periodically check the pilot flames. Correctflame pattern has three strong blue flames:1 flowing around the thermopile and 1around the thermocouple, and 1 flowingacross the rear of the burner (it does nothave to be touching the burner).

Note: If you have an incorrect flame pat-tern, contact your Waterford deal-er for further instructions.

GENERAL VENTMAINTENANCE

Conduct an inspection of the venting systemsemi-annually. Recommended areas to inspectas follows:

1) Check the Venting System for corrosion inareas that are exposed to the elements. These will appear as rust spots or streaks, and in extreme cases, holes. These compo-nents should be replaced immediately.

2) Remove the Cap, and shine a flashlightdown the Vent. Remove any bird nests, orother foreign material.

3) Check for evidences of excessive conden-sation, such as water droplets forming inthe inner liner, and subsequently drippingout the joints, Continuous condensation cancause corrosion of caps, pipe, and fittings. It may be caused by having excessivelateral runs, too many elbows, and exteriorportions of the system being exposed tocold weather.

4) Inspect joints, to verify that no pipe sectionsor fittings have been disturbed, and conse-quently loosened. Also check mechanicalsupports such as Wall Straps, or plumbers'tape for rigidity.

LOG REPLACEMENT

The unit should never be used with broken logs.Turn off the gas valve and allow the unit to coolbefore opening door to carefully remove thelogs. The pilot light generates enough heat toburn someone. If for any reason a log shouldneed replacement, you must use the properreplacement log. The position of these logs mustbe as shown in the diagram under Log Installa-tion.

Note: Improper positioning of logs maycreate carbon build-up and will al-ter the unit’s performance whichis not covered under warranty.

WARNING: CHILDREN ANDADULTS SHOULD BE ALERTEDTO THE HAZARDS OF HIGH SUR-FACE TEMPERATURE ANDSHOULD STAY AWAY TO AVOIDBURNS OR CLOTHING IGNITION.YOUNG CHILDREN SHOULD BECAREFULLY SUPERVISED WHENTHEY ARE IN THE SAME ROOM ASTHE APPLIANCE.

DO NOT USE THIS APPLIANCE IFANY PART HAS BEEN UNDERWATER. IMMEDIATELY CALL AQUALIFIED SERVICE TECHNICIANTO INSPECT THE APPLIANCE ANDTO REPLACE ANY PART OF CON-TROL SYSTEM AND ANY GASCONTROL WHICH HAS BEEN UN-DER WATER.

CLOTHING OR OTHER FLAMMA-BLE MATERIAL SHOULD NOT BEPLACED ON OR NEAR THE APPLI-ANCE.
