A Note From the EditorHappy LOVE month! We have a very romantic Valentines Day Edition for you this month. We have our new journalist, Ann Alcock who has written a beautiful story for us which you can read on page 17 of this edition.

As you would have read on page 2-3 we have a wonderful feature on your Tara Show, which is fast approaching, being held on the 8th March, 2014. It sounds like it will be a fantastic event and there will be something for the whole family!

On a more serious note, Western Downs Magazines have decided to lend a hand to a magnificent charity; Aussie Helpers. This organisation is carrying out invaluable work in drought affected regions of Queensland and New South Wales. They are running initiatives such as Buy A Bale to lend a hand to those who need it at the moment. You can read all about the ongoing devastation that is affecting farmers right on our doorstep and find out how you might be able to help on pages 20-21. These stories may bring a tear to your eye, but we need to do something to bring this situation to light.

Until next month, lets pray for rain.

Half A Century for the Hannaford Rose & Geranium ClubThis year marks fifty years for the Hannaford Rose & Geranium Club since its inception in 1964 and we want to collate many of the available photos and have them available to all in one place on a CD. This way we hope, most of the historical photos will be preserved from time, mice, fire or flood! The plan is to make commemorative CDs available for purchase to anyone who is interested, ensuring many copies are out there and will hopefully survive the test of time.

If you have, or know of, any photos from club days or flower shows and would like to add them to the collection, please contact myself, Lynelle Urquhart on 4662 9125 or [email protected] . If you post them to me I shall ensure their absolute care, scan them into the files and return them to you. (Postal address: Lynelle Urquhart, Warrowa, 13919 Moonie Highway, Moonie Qld 4406)

Mayoral Prayer BreakfastThe Mayoral Prayer Breakfast for the Western Downs Regional Council will be held on Friday 21st March at the Dalby RSL Club from 6.30am to 8.30am.

The Mayor of the Western Downs Regional Council Cr Ray Brown will officially welcome all attending the breakfast and give a short address. The Breakfast will consist of a hot and cold buffet.

Several members from our community will lead the event with Prayers for the Nation, Prayers for the Western Downs Region, Prayers for the Family and Prayers for our Local Communities.

The Guest Speaker for the Breakfast is Barry Cunnington. Barry was born into a Christian farming family in western New South Wales and raised in an isolated district many kilometres from town. Barry attended Boarding School and eventually returned to the land to pursue a career in farming and agriculture after graduating from Agricultural College with Honours. At the age of 24 Barry was managing what was at the time one of Australias largest northern development properties. Following great success, Barrys life was devastated by a series of events which triggered a return to God. The call to God began to be fulfilled, including a call to establish Orphanages and Widows Homes in Africa. Barry has been instrumental in running the spectacular Tent of Promise which continues throughout Africa today. He has just returned from Romania and Bahrain.

Barry will be sharing with us the key he discovered to access the blessings of the supernatural life in Christ, which has taken him from an ordinary life to a favoured, blessed and higher life in Christ.

Closer to the event, tickets will be available at the Western Downs Regional Council Corporate Office in Dalby and all Customer Service Centres.

Kylies Agro RoundupAgronomist Changes at Tara Rural Supplies

Kylie Fourie will be leaving us in mid February to go and have a baby! So please make sure you contact her on 0429032218 with any questions so that she can help you out before she goes on maternity leave.

Kylie will be returning to work part time from July, in the meantime Andy Gunther will be your main point of contact if you have any agronomy questions. Please call the shop on 07 4665 3366 to talk to Andy about any agronomic issues.

    Winter Forage Options

It may not feel like it now but we need to start thinking about what you might plant WHEN it rains!

The quickest forage sorghum we have to feed height is SSS variety. Or if you are looking for standover feed to take into winter then Sweet Jumbo or Mega Sweet are the variety of choice. Sorghum will stop growing as the days grow colder, so if we have not had a rain before the

end of February then swapping to oats is your best option.

By the end of February we will be able to plant some varieties of oats, and if you are looking for more bulk in your feed then mixing forage sorghum with your oats seed may be a good option.

Some oats varieties are already in tight supply, so please let us know your predicted seed requirements so that you can plant the variety that is suitable for your production system.

Aladdin is an oats variety suitable for planting at the end of February as it can handle a hot start to get you some quick green feed.

In March as the soil temperature cools we can plant all oats varieties, as well as think about Barley or Triticale as alternatives. Barley has a feed advantage over oats as it puts on more bulk, however you will only get one feeding out of it, compared to a couple of feeds with most oat varieties.

Some ladies will do anything for a good cause!

When Annies husband John dies from leukaemia, she and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new sofa in the local hospital waiting room.

They manage to persuade four fellow Womans Institute members to pose nude with them for an alternative calendar. With their modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements, and a little help from the hospital porter and an amateur photographer they complete their calendar. The calendar is a huge success but Chris and Annies friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame.

Based on a true story, Calendar Girls became the fastest selling play in British theatre history and a worldwide hit, showing one night only at the Empire Theatre.

  • Valentine's Day & Pam's Greenery

Why not brighten up your life with a boxed arrangement of flowers or a bouquet of lovely red roses for your loved one this Valentine's Day. Tray-boxes can include a teddy bear or chocolates to make the occasion even more special. Phone Pam to have them ready and on time for this special occasion. Place your order early so you wont be disappointed.

Pam's Greenery is now six years old and has diversified over the years to bring the ladies who live in Tara and the surrounding area a taste of what the city folk take for granted. Lovely artificial plants, greenery and flowers are the beginning of cheering up the theme around the home and office place by enhancing the feeling of well-being. They're pleasing to the eye and have always lifted one's spirits and will continue to do so.

Handbags, wallets and evening bags have been introduced together with fashion accessories over the years and now, also in store there're beautiful tapestry designs in a range of handbags, travel bags, wallets and shopping bags. These together with other gifts items in the store are all at affordable prices.

Tapestry is a fabric that centuries ago, only the very rich could afford.

It is a woven art for decorations in palaces, castles and churches across Europe. In the past tapestry advertised the power of wealth of Kings and Noblemen. Henry VIII was recorded to have owned more than 2000 tapestries. Today this ancient craft has been integrated with the latest technology to produce an elegant range of modern tapestry with exquisite designs for your pleasure.

You dont need someone to complete you.

You only need someone to accept you completely.

  • St Valentines DayFor incurable romantics St Valentines Day is just around the corner. How will you show your love to that special person in your life?

St Valentines day is steeped in history and tradition. The origins remain shrouded in mystery but one legend dates it back to the Roman times. Emperor Claudius II believed that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families and so he forbade marriage for young men. Valentine is said to have defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Prior to his execution he was visited in prison by a young girl and before his death is said to have written her a letter which he signed from your Valentine, an expression we continue to use today. The oldest known valentine still in existence is a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt.

For many years people continued to declare their love with individual hand written notes. These have largely been replaced by commercial greeting cards and the digital age has given us e-cards. Now there are apps to help you plan your complete Valentine event on your smart phone or tablet.

The traditions of giving flowers, especially long-stemmed red roses, and heart-shaped chocolates in red-lined boxes are still among the most popular ways of showing ones love on Valentines Day. Candle-lit dinners, jewellery and romantic weekends also rate highly.

Five romantic and fun things to do on St Valentines Day:

    1. To help your love last all year spend some time together writing romantic ideas on slips of paper. Place them in a box and each partner takes one out every alternate week and has to implement the idea during the following week.

    2. Use an iOS app to make your own personalised video greeting.

    3. Give your partner a love coupon. This is a promissory note between lovers to agree to do something romantic at some date in the future.

    4. Make a list of the top 10 reasons why you love your partner.

    5. Take a bubble bath with candles and champagne.

    Happy St Valentines Day!

  • 20 February - 2014

Yesterday I posted a rant on our facebook page about the mental suffering of graziers and all farmers alike in this terrible drought we are enduring at this time. To illustrate my point, I used a photo of my gorgeous kelpie blue dog cross, Lolli. She was and is suffering from an unknown illness, one that looked like it would take her very life and still could. This morning she is much improved though, and hopefully she continues to do so, after extremely valuable advice received from Breaker. She even finished her milk this morning, and smacked her lips with a little more life in her eyes.

My point in yesterdays post is that you really cannot know the amount of hardship, and the terrible choices that must be made on a farm in drought unless you have physically been there yourself, and made those choices.

Its almost impossible to explain with words the trauma of a decision where your choices are bad, very bad and just plain awful. But one thing I learnt (the only useful thing I have learnt) from animal activists websites and facebook pages, while I was trying to fight the anti-farmer movement, is this take a picture, give suffering a face, and people can empathise.

I saw many photos of cattle, maybe a single brahman steer, lovely and quiet looking, they gave it a name, one I know they decided to call Jacob and then told a story about how he was brutalized and cruelly murdered in some overseas abattoir. Then they point the finger at Australian farmers and say its all their fault This is not the point of my post today, but its very easy to see how people get so upset about Live Export

    with such a visual motivator.

So yesterday my motivator was the image of my own wonderful dog suffering, and people have responded! The response has been greater than imagined, though the response we got from the picture of Bustas empty collar should have given me some sort of clue, seen by over 90,000 people, liked and shared so many times! I wish I could tell our

mate how many people have grieved for him.. It would blow his humble doggy mind.

I have turned down many many offers for financial support, people who want to pay the vet fee to save my little dog, and I so appreciate every single one of them! I am not turning them down out of pride, or some misguided sense of martyrdom.. I say no, because I am only one person, only one insignificant farmers daughter in a country filled with people more needy, the grazier who is so broke he cannot afford to buy hay to keep his five year old daughters pony from starving. The sheep farmer who has to make a choice to buy more drench for his dying sheep, or put food in his childrens mouths for one more week.

The man who, with $100 left to his name, must decide if he will buy one more bale of hay for his favourite cows, or a carton of bullets to put them all down. Its no wonder so many of these hurting, broken men turn the rifle on themselves after the grisly job is done.

If all I can do is share the photos of the things which break our hearts every single day, then see these pictures. A baby lamb named Choppa pulled from a bog hole, the only survivor out of seven sheep, and 15 kangaroos, Choppa died after three days of love and care in the houseyard.

A calf called Geoff, pulled from a dam, where he was stuck beside the dead body of his mother, and named

after a wonderful man, born malnourished, he looked more like an 80 year old POW than the two week old baby he was. We fought for him so hard, only to lose him three weeks later.

An old cow struggles to stand, she was a much loved old girl, one of our special MJ cows.. One day she stood up, the next I helped her up, the day after, my little brother dragged her body away. My brother is 19. Why should he have to face that sort of thing, when others his age are partying and living life to the fullest? Other boys are travelling, having fun, getting first jobs and going to uni. My brother is a man beyond his years, he has seen more and suffered more than most men twice his age.

My sister is 21, girls her age are going to the beach and debating whether or not to wear that dress. My sister, doesnt care what she wears, so long as she doesnt have to see another animal in distress today.

If seeing these images hurts you, or makes you feel sad, only imagine what it does to the minds and emotions of the men and women who see them in real life every day, those who fight to change the inevitable, those who work against all odds to save a life, or to help an animal who is suffering.

Its difficult enough every day, but to do it with debt, or no money like so many graziers are trying to do right now? Impossible. My fathers

voice when our pet cow comes to him for food in the paddock, and he rubs her neck and apologises to her softly, Im so sorry girl, I cannot feed you today.

There is emotional damage occurring in the bush today, and if you can spare a moment, spend a moment.

Buy locally grown, support Aussie beef, Aussie lamb, pay an extra dollar for something direct from the grower.

And most of all, Thank God for the Aussie producer. They do it tough, they feel forgotten, and misunderstood. But every day I see more people standing up to say hey, we see you, we appreciate you, we support you

Announcing the Western Downs Winners of the Australia Day AwardsThe Australia Day spirit is alive and well on the Western Downs with 28 locals set to be honoured this Sunday as outstanding citizens who've contributed to our region's lifestyle.

Mayor Ray Brown said the judging panel faced a tough decision to pick the winners from 68 worthy nominations.

Planting seeds for successionWhether youre a farmer, a retailer, a manufacturer or a service provider, you should be succession planning. You may be a long time off retirement, but planning early will help you achieve a smooth transition to your golden years.

As the old Chinese Proverb says The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

A succession plan is a strategy you put in place to identify and develop the next person/s to lead your business. That could be an employee you are grooming, an investor you are courting to purchase the business or a family member from the next generation who is taking the reigns.

No matter what your succession path looks like, there are two key aspects you have to get right:

    1. The technical details. Succession planning

is not a one-off event. It is a process, and it can take years. Are assets owned by the right entities, are you using the right business structures? Its a little like chess. You need to always be looking several moves ahead while you continue to adapt constantly to the changing environment around you. Having experts who can help you navigate technicalities like capital gains tax, superannuation and aged care rules can make a big difference. Be sure to involve your solicitor and accountant in your planning right from the start.

    2. Communication. Your personality, upbringing, values, education and stage of life will all have a bearing on how you view things and how you communicate with others. Recognise and enjoy your different

perspectives. Be honest. If you arent openly sharing, then people will start to make their own (often wrong) assumptions about what you are planning. Be kind to each other. It can be wise to use a skilled negotiator, to work through issues and towards agreed approaches.

Succession planning takes commitment, patience, specialist assistance, and constructive debate to climb hurdles and identify opportunities. With the right approach, nothing is insurmountable. And remember, the best time to start is now.

    Question:

Does my child have a vision related learning

    problem?

    Answer:

A large part of learning is done visually and at

distances less than arms length which can be

stressful to the visual system. This is particular

relevant with the increase in use of tablets and

computers by children at all ages.

It follows that even a minor reduction in visual

efficiency can cause significant problems with

learning. Examples of strategies that children

    adopt to compensate include:

    Avoiding near work and reading

Attempting to do work, though with lowered

    understanding

Complaints of discomfort, fatigue or short

    attention span

Adverse visual adaptations such as myopia or

    astigmatism.

Sugar, the Most Dangerous Drug of All? Last month I delivered some vital information to you. In the Special January Edition of the Western Downs Magazine I outlined the Top Ten Chemicals To Avoid in your personal care products. Many of these chemicals are very popular in everyday products and by avoiding them you could prevent conditions such as cancer, depression, insomnia, birth defects, organ failure, psoriasis, eczema and many other health issues.

This month, we put the spotlight on sugar. Sugar is becoming a major concern in the medical community and has recently been described as the most dangerous drug of our time by Paul van der Velpen, head of Amsterdams respected health service.

Now we have all heard about the risks of obesity and diabetes being the result of a high consumption of sugar. But did you know that there 146 negative effects sugar can have on your health? Nancy Appleton PhD. a clinical nutritionist has completed a study exploring the effects of sugar on our health and found 146 health issues directly resulting from the consumption of sugar. Some of these include:

Sugar can decrease growth hormone (the key to staying youthful and lean)

    Sugar feeds cancer

    Sugar increases cholesterol

    Sugar causes food allergies

Sugar can contribute to eczema in children

Sugar can impair the structure of DNA

Addressing similar issues the World Health Organisation released a warning based on research published in January 2013 proving that high-sugar diets lead to weight gain. The corollary of weight-gain, of course, is obesity, and all the attendant health issues that condition raises, including heart disease, cancer, hypertension and decreased life expectancy. And as if that wasnt enough, another study published in the European Journal of Nutrition points to a link between high sugar intake and a much greater risk of depression.

Above all this research the one point that concerns me the most is that sugar feeds cancer. Science Daily states that certain sugar molecules are present in very high numbers in cancer cells. It now turns out that these sugar molecules are not only present but actually aid the growth of the malignant cells. The fact that cancer rates in Australia are now 1 in 3 people, you would think that our nation would sit up and take notice. But many continue on in life in denial, that wont happen to me!

Not only is sugar aiding the death of our family and friends but there is the growing conviction that sugar is a highly addictive substance and one which creates cravings we find hard to control. Megan Douglas, a renowned naturopath and founder of World Organic, brings to light in one of her recent articles the results of scientific studies, which reveal that whilst people eating fats and proteins will stop when they are full, they will keep eating if they are consuming sugars, no matter their level of satiety. Perhaps even more frightening, French researchers in Bordeaux also reported recently that laboratory rats chose sugar over cocaine, despite the fact that they were already addicted to cocaine!

Dr Mehmet Oz suggests a four-pronged, four-week approach to freeing yourself from sugar addiction:

    1. Eat a balanced breakfast with protein and fibre to stave off sugar cravings later in the morning.

    2. Eliminate hidden sugars around your house. Common household foods that contain hidden sugar include peanut butter, mayonnaise, pasta sauce and yogurt.

    3. Use alternative sweeteners such as agave or stevia.

    4. Trick your taste buds by finding ways to replace the sugar with something else, such as cinnamon.

Alternatively, try starting with the new Queensland Health campaign, Dont stop it, just swap it! Swap soft drink and juice for water. Swap regular sugared tea and coffee for herbal teas. Swap a sweet biscuit or cake snack for a piece of fruit. Swap regular chocolate for dark chocolate with 80%+ cocoa.

I want to leave you with one thought if every type of food and drink that contains sugar carried a warning label that read:

This product is addictive and may cause depression, cancer, cardiovascular disease, allergies and eczema.

Would you purchase the product? Would you feed it to your child, grandchild, or even your dog?

Start addressing the sugar addiction in your home today!

Head LiceHead lice are spread by head-to-head contact with someone who already has head lice. Having head lice is not a sign of poor hygiene and head lice do not carry or spread other diseases. Anyone can catch head lice at any age.

Head lice are wingless insects that make their home on peoples scalps. They are often difficult to see. Their favourite hiding places are behind the ears and at the back of the neck. Head lice feed on human blood and their bite can be itchy.

Female lice lay their eggs near the base of hairs, usually within 1.5cm of the scalp. The eggs are glued to the hairs and hatch in about seven days. The empty egg shells are call nits.

Individual lice cannot live for more than a few days off the head.

    SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Tickling or itching feeling of something moving in the hair

    Skin sores caused by scratching

Pale, white specks (the eggs) stuck to the base of the hairs, that do not fall out when the hair is shaken

Head lice products can kill living lice and eggs, but do not protect people from getting head lice. Frequent or regular use of head lice products can cause scalp irritation and may allow lice to develop resistance to treatments.

An easy way to find lice and eggs is the conditioner and comb method.

Hair conditioner makes it hard for the lice to cling to the hair or crawl away. Any ype of hair conditioner may be used.

School children often get and spread head lice. If your child has head lice you are advised to contact the school teacher and everyone your child has been in close contact with over the past few weeks.

Head lice can also be removed by use of an insecticide type head lice product. These products are available as shampoos, mousses, conditioners, lotions and sprays.

    When using head lice products

Do not use on children under 2 years of age without a doctors advice

Use enough to thoroughly cover the hair and scalp, including the back of the neck and behind the ears

Dry hair with a towel (do not use a hair dryer as heat can inactivate the treatment)

Itching may continue for one week after the head lice have been killed

No single treatment kills 100% of eggs. Apply the product a second time, 7-10 days after the first application, to kill surviving eggs.

Lice can become resistant to some products. If lice are not killed, a different product may be needed.

For all your head lice requirements please contact The Dalby Friendly Society Dispensary Ltd.

Tara CricketA great day was had by all at Teelba last Saturday as the Tara & District Cricket Association took the show on the road in recognition of the group of players from that neck of the woods who support the local competition. A special thanks to the local community for their hospitality on the day.

Two T20 games were contested on the day with Condamine taking on Meandarra in the morning and Tara playing Moonie in the afternoon.

Meandarra batted first and it was some local Teelba talent that got them off to a good start with John Penfold (27) and Tim Simmons (21) batting well to see them 2/55 off 8 overs. Two quick wickets including the in-form Brendan Hatherell (3) saw Meandarra slump to 4/65. Ryan Burrows (40 retired), Webby (16) and Teelbas Sonny Power (18 n/o) came to the rescue to see Meandarra post a good score of 157 of their 20 overs. Sam Taylor was the pick of the Condamine bowlers taking 2 for 23.

Condamines run chase got off to a bad start, losing Sam Taylor (14) and Ben Mott (3) cheaply. A good partnership between Guy Campbell (40 retired) and Scott Attwooll (20) got Condamine to 3 for 81, but once those two left the crease things fell away quickly to see Condamine all out for 105 in the 20th over. Meandarra used 9 bowlers for the day with most picking up a wicket, however Craig Emerys 3 for 7 off 2 overs was the most impressive.

Tara won the toss and elected to bat in the afternoon match. Jeff Wade (40 retired) and Matthew Prain (38) put on an impressive 95 run opening stand which set up Taras innings. Ian Beil (13 n/o) was the only other player to reach double figures however as Taras innings ended at 5 for 137. Patty Nolan enjoyed the conditions to pick up 2 for 15 from his 4 overs and Brad

Baker 1 for 10 off 4 bowled with great control.

Moonies innings didnt get off to the best of starts losing Trent Schutt (3), Brad Baker (2) and Mark Bogle (9) within the first 5 overs to leave them at 3 for 17. Unfortunately it didnt get much better for Moonie as not one batsmen reached double figures to see them all out for 63 in 17 overs. New recruit for Tara, Glen Gulliver picked up the impressive figures of 3 for 12 off 3 overs and the evergreen Ian Beil chimed in with 3 for 5 off his four overs.

Meandarra Bowls ClubThe refurbishment of the greens is now complete and members have had a roll-up and found the green in great condition, just a little more work and it will be excellent. Sunday bowls will start at 3.00pm so members try and brave the heat and have a roll soon.

Mark Saturday, 22 February on your calendar for a game of Night Bowls. What a brilliant way to spend a Summers evening outdoors with family and friends. Feel free to nominate your own team of 3 players or if you cant find a team we will make one up for you. $6.00 per player for the night and the Club will supply complimentary supper. The McDonald Trophy is up for grabs and other prizes to be won. So please forward your team with Lyn McDonald, June Slack or with me as soon as possible. We are looking forward to a fun-filled evening come and join us!

Please note that the Club is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays from 5pm onwards, and patrons please note that Club rule applies. Fridays are BBQ nights prepared by our lovely volunteers, please feel free to drop in for a bite and to socialize as well as to catch-up on the latest. The Club greatly appreciates your patronage.
