 The  strange  and  terrible  things  come  out  at  night    To  give  you  one  great  big  fright!  You  try  to  hide  in  your  bed  But  a  ghost  tries  to  cut  off  your  head.    The  witch  flies  after  you,  And  so  does  the  goblin,  too.  You  run  from  your  home  Wishing  the  monsters  would  leave  you  alone.  You  soon  realize  they’re  everywhere,  And  you  become  extremely  scared!  You  attempt  to  scream,  But  you  wake  up  and  realize  it  was  just  a  dream.

Do you know where Jack-o-Lanterns came from and where they got their name? You are most likely thinking, ’Duh, they come from pumpkins.’ But, I mean where did that classical Halloween tradition originate? Well, the Jack-o-Lantern came from an Irish Folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. Also in Ireland, large potatoes and pumpkins served as a canvas for early artists. So, Irish immigrants brought that age-old Halloween tradition to America. That is how a pumpkin and Jack-o-Lantern became part of the American Halloween.

10 Fun/Funny Things To Do On Halloween By Tammera Gooden

1. Hand out toothpicks instead of candy. 2. Open the door dressed as a giant fish. Immediately collapse, and don’t move or say anything until the people leave. 4. When you answer the door, throw out a candy bar and yell, “Crawl for it!” 5. Demand that the trick-or-treaters do five push-ups before you give them candy. 6. Answer the door dressed as a dentist and give kids a lecture about candy being horrible for their teeth. 7. When you open the door, just awkwardly stare at the people and don’t say a word. 8. Answer the door with a mouthful of M&M’s and have many half eaten candy bars in your hands. Act surprised. Close the door, and get rid of the candy. Open the door seconds later and demand that you don’t have any candy. 9. Scream at the trick-or-treaters. Slam the door closed, and run around your house screaming until their gone. 10. When they ask for candy, tell them a long unnecessary story about your life until they get bored and leave.

Enjoy this quick and easy Halloween recipe; perfect for serving at parties! Ingredients:

• 1 cup butter, softened • 1 cup confectioners' sugar • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon almond extract • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 3/4 cup whole almonds • 1 (3/4 ounce) tube red decorating gel

Directions:

1. Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; refrigerate 20 to 30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheets.

3. Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed paper. Use the waxed paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance.

4. Arrange the shaped cookies on the baking sheets.

5. Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes.

6. Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie.

What Scares People Most Poll

By Kaylee Parks Are you scared of the dark, ghosts, or maybe even staying home alone? I surveyed 60 people about what scares them most. Thirty-nine percent of the people were afraid of creepy crawlies(bugs, snakes, etc.). Twenty-two percent were afraid of ghosts, and ten percent were afraid of the dark. At the bottom, tied up at eight percent each were staying home alone and getting bad grades. Thirteen percent of people were scared of other things. What are you afraid of?

What is your favorite Halloween riddle? Halloween riddles are basically jokes about Halloween or Halloween-type things. Almost all of the riddles are a play on words. Here are some examples of Halloween riddles.

1. Why wasn’t there any food left after the monster party? Everyone was a goblin. 2. Why didn’t Dracula have any friends? He was a pain in the neck. 3.What did the skeleton order with its drink? It ordered a mop. 4. Why is it hard for a ghost to tell a lie? You can see right through it. 5. Why couldn’t the skeleton cross the road? It didn’t have the guts. 6. What do skeletons say before they start to eat? They say, ”Bone appetite.” 7. What do ghosts serve for dessert? They serve I scream. 8. What did the ghost teacher say to her class? Watch the board, and I’ll go through it again. 9. Why didn’t the skeleton go to the school dance? It had no body to dance with. 10. What did one ghost say to the other ghost? It said, “Long time, no see.” These are just a few of the many corny Halloween riddles that you might have heard. Remember, if you see a skeleton, don’t be afraid. It’s more afraid of you than you are of it. Skeletons have no guts.

Big Foot, Fact or Fiction? By Kaylee Parks

Have you ever wondered if the legend of an 8-foot tall, hairy, brown monster was true? Legend has it that Sasquatch, or Bigfoot, is an ape-like creature that roams the woods. It is supposed to have thick, reddish-brown hair with large eyes, a low-set forehead, and an ear-splitting roar. Do you smell something? Sasquatch also has a very strong stench that can be smelled from extremely far away. But is this legend a fact, or is it fiction?

Many people claim they have evidence of Bigfoot from footprints to pictures that supposedly belonged to Sasquatch. Most footprints that are found are about two feet long and eight inches wide. People have taken pictures of what they believed was the monster. Sometimes these pictures look surprisingly human. Could this actually be evidence of Bigfoot himself? Could these footprints and pictures come from some other animal or, possibly, a human?

Have you seen this spine-tingling creature in person? Has it ever crept up behind you in the woods? This has never happened to me, but it supposedly happened to hundreds of people across America. There have been at least twenty-two sightings in Mississippi including two right here in Hinds County. One of these was an actual class A sighting, which means that the person saw Bigfoot clearly without a doubt.

  October  has  many  important  dates  in  it.  On  October  1,  1896,  free  rural  delivery  of  mail  started.  On  October  4,  1957,  the  first  artificial  satellite  was  launched  by  the  Soviet  Union.  October  5,  1947,  the  amazing  first    address  telecast  from  the  White  House  was  made  by  Harry  S.  Truman.  The  Washington  arrived  at  New  Orleans  on  October  7,  1816.    Christopher  Columbus  discovered  the  Americas  on  October  12,  1492.    In  October  18,  1867  the  U.S.  flag  was  formally  raised  over  Alaska.  On  October  22,  1836  Sam  Houston  was  inaugurated  as  the  first  president  of  the  Republic  of  Texas.  Nevada  became  the  36th  state  of  the  United  States  on  October  31,  1864.  The  same  day  as  Halloween!  

  There  are  also  many  National  Events  in  October.  National  Cookie   month,   National   Chili   month,   National   Pizza   month,  National  Dessert  month,  National   Seafood  month,   and  National  Lupus  awareness.  And  of  course  Halloween!  Who  knew  so  many  national  dates  were  in  October?

Many people today still believe in ghosts. The word ghost may mean the spirit of a non-living person or it may just mean a faint figure. Sometimes it’s just a shadow, or is it? Many different cultures believe in good and evil spirits. The evil spirits, they say, are just simply good spirits turned bad. Ghosts are spirits that left the person’s body but remained on the earth. There have been many people to claim to have seen a ghost. People have said that ghosts can take many different forms. They also say that you can’t see or hear the ghost, but you can feel the ghost’s presence. Also, numerous people have reported a “group” of ghosts.

The month of October is filled with many cool things. Fall begins to settle in with a brisk cool refreshing breeze that chills the air during the exhilarating rides of the Mississippi State Fair. The month of October is when we honor Christopher Columbus for his exploration of the Americas. We celebrated Columbus Day the 2nd Monday of October. To many the most important day of October is the 31st. It is this day we celebrate Halloween. So in my opinion, October is one awesome month from the 1st to the 31st.

The  Killer  Hounds  of  Torture  By: Maya Stocks

Have you seen movies with werewolves in them? Some movie examples are Scream of the Wolf, The Howling, or The Curse of the Werewolf. A couple of the more known ones are Harry Potter and The Twilight Saga. So why does it seem werewolves only exist in movies? And if they do… where do these rare sightings of werewolves come from?

A lycanthrope, or more commonly known as a werewolf, is a person that periodically changes into a wolf when there is a full moon. They are either born as a lycanthrope, cursed or punished, deal with dark magic, bitten or come in contact with a lycanthrope, wear a wolf skin belt or enchanted wolf fur, or drink the water from the footsteps of one!

The most recorded cases of lycanthropy happened in European countries between the years of 1500 and 1800. One popular case was the Beast of Gevaudan. This beast persecuted a small, southern French town in 1764. It was said it murdered more than 60 people and animals. The wolf like animal was the size of a cow, looked like a bear, wolf, and panther all in one, had a long wolf-like snout lined with teeth, and cloven hooves. The color of the werewolf like beast varied from black with some white, red, or even brown fur. Scientists are unsure whether this beast was a lion, hyena, wolf, or something of a mutant sort. This rare creature has not been seen again.

Another sighting of werewolf was the late 16th century case in the town of Bedburg, Germany. This creature was a fiendish creature that killed cattle, women, children, and men. This man’s name was Peter Stubb. He went under the alliances Abal Griswold, Abil Griswold, and Ubel Griswold. He was previously a wealthy farmer before the gruesome murders. He was executed on October 28, 1589..

So the real question is are werewolves real? Well the answer to this is there is no scientific proof saying they either exist or don’t exist. But if you were to ask any of the witnesses of these werewolves or werewolf like creatures, the answer would be yes. Many believe that these creatures were responsible for deaths. Others seem to believe that werewolves were the “Hounds of Heaven”, for one werewolf prevented the loss of a farm. Still others believe there is no such thing as werewolves, only a delusion. Maybe they’re right, there are no werewolves. Or are there…?

THE FIRST HALLOWEEN By: Khunsa Saleem

Straddling the line between fall and winter, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes, and sweet treats.

Frankenstein was said to be created by an old doctor name Victor Frankenstein. He was created from old tools, chemicals, and a big spark. Frankenstein was “born” eight feet tall and really strong, but he had the mind of a newborn baby. Victor abandoned Frankenstein after realizing how strong he was. Frankenstein was left alone to try and fit in with society, but nobody accepted him. Frankenstein looked in a mirror and saw his gross composure that made society hate him. He sought revenge on Victor, so he hurt Victor’s brother, best friend, and his wife. Frankenstein didn’t want people to see him as a monster, so he started to go around helping people. Think about it. Who was the real monster? Frankenstein or his creator?

Serpent Misunderstood By Clark Hensley

Snakes are one of the most hated and feared animals, but their reputation is not well deserved. Snakes are probably most disliked because they bite. Contrary to popular belief even a thirty foot long python will most likely not try to bite a human as long as it does not feel threatened. In truth, snakes do feel threatened in ways that seem very nonsensical to us. Humans are big enough to seem like predators to snakes, so if a human gets too close to a snake, especially if they step on one, the snake is likely to bite. Now, very few snakes are very dangerous, and even fewer are lethal. The only venomous snakes in Mississippi are the Cottonmouth, or Water Moccasin, the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, the Timber or Canebrake, Rattlesnake, the Pygmy Rattlesnake, the Eastern Coral Snake, and the Copperhead. As a word of warning, Mississippi snake expert, Terry Vandeventer, says that 85% of snake bites are the result of a human not leaving a snake alone. Also, like all animals, snakes play an important role in the environment, keeping populations of small mammals, birds, and invertebrates down, and keeping larger mammals and birds fed. It is your opinion whether you want to be around snakes, but next time you encounter a snake, remember that it is doing its part, and it will leave you alone if you leave it alone.

HALLOWEEN ARTS AND CRAFTS SPIRIT JUGS

By: Khunsa Saleem Stationed on a walkway porch, these homemade lanterns will extend a ghostly greeting and good-bye to all your holiday visitors. Total Time-1 hour What you'll need- • Clean plastic gallon milk jugs • Black permanent marker • Craft knife • String of 50 clear low-wattage holiday

lights How to make it- 1) Draw ghost eyes and mouths on the jugs. TIP: Leave the caps on while you do this, so the jugs don't dent. 2) Use the craft knife to cut a half-dollar-size hole in the back of each jug. 3) Arrange the ghosts near each other and string the lights between them, stuffing several bulbs into each of the jugs.

Do you believe that haunted houses are real? Well, I don’t believe in them. Haunted houses are fictional. In most TV shows and movies, like the TV/movie series Scooby Doo, there’s usually an evil villain behind the plot or some computer graphics and/or special effects. Haunted Houses are almost always used in scary stories because they can be easily related to normal human life. They also provide a “base” for ghosts, spirits, etc. But, you never know.

Bullying is a serious matter, as you have heard a million times before. But, have you been bullied? If the answer is yes than you know how it feels, as I do. I have a suggestion for you .To make it stop follow these simple steps to a better life. First, ignore them. Then, if they don’t stop, tell a parent. If, it continues go straight to a teacher and say “Hey Mrs. __________ or Mr. ____________I am being bullied by __________ and it won’t stop. I have told my parents and they have e-mailed the principal and __________ still won’t stop, and I would like it to stop now!” I know this will work because I have been bullied too. If you are the bully then STOP! You do not need to be mean and bully other people to be popular. You need to be nice, and treat others as you want to be treated. Most of the people who are popular are nice to everyone. Don’t be a bully just to be liked because nobody likes a bully. If you are a victim then SPEAK OUT! Don’t be afraid because you think you’re alone. You aren’t alone. Take it from me, a previous victim of bullying. Remember you aren’t alone, God or someone else is always with you forever.

Fangs A Scary Story By: Clark Hensley

The wind whipped my face as I trudged to the school building, pulled down by

the weight of my bag. I happily found my way into the warmth of the hallways through the December cold and deposited what I did not need in my locker.

I entered my first period class as the bell rang and sat in my seat. My teacher was standing in the front of the class next to a kid who looked too young to be in our grade. The teacher introduced him, saying that he would be joining us in the second semester, but was here before Christmas to make friends. At the word “friends” the boy smiled, and for a second I was sure I saw pointed teeth, and two canine fangs. I did a double take, and his mouth seemed normal, but I took a closer look at him. He had a mane of shaggy black hair. His ears were needlelike in their pointiness. And his eyes, his eyes had a look of animal hunger, the look of a predator, and, if you looked close enough, a look of evil. Through the day, as the boy had the exact same schedule as I did, I noticed that all my teachers seemed oblivious, almost mesmerized, as to what the boy did. They said nothing when he did no schoolwork, sniffed the air as if hunting for something, and even licked one girl’s arm. Another student said something about this in class, and was immediately given detention for being rude. At the end of the day, as I began my walk home, he came to me from the building and thanked me for being such a good friend, saying that he was very lonely. This befuddled me, as I had had no interaction with him that day; I had secretly been wary of him. Then I also realized I had not heard him speak the entire day. His voice was very raspy, and it seemed as if he was panting. He invited me to his house, and I was readily available because of a mix of curiosity and terror. He began to run, no bound like a wolf along the street, and I had to sprint to follow him. After a maze of suburban territory, and a lot of panting from both of us, we arrived at a desolate street I had never seen in our town before. He did not say anything but slowed to a jog and seemed to be heading for a house about 500 feet away. All the houses seemed to be deserted, not run down, and rather ordinary, but not lived in. I suddenly heard a piercing noise, almost like a shriek, coming from the house we were headed to. He sprinted inside faster than seemed possible, and I was a good thirty seconds behind him. I slipped into the dark house, and saw nothing, literally nothing. The house was bare. By this point I was both incredibly curious and scared having seen enough horror movies for a few lifetimes. I decided to try the light switch, which worked, and began to explore the house. I saw no sign of the boy or something that could have made a shriek on the bottom floor, and began climbing the stairs. I opened a door, which gave a horribly long creak to what must have been a bedroom, and saw a few boxes, the first sign of life in the house. I moved forward to the boxes and was suddenly on the floor pinned by something. I turned my head and saw the boy, eyes glowing red, and mucus dripping from his mouth and nostrils, preparing to sink his razor sharp fangs into my face.

Have you ever seen anyone walking around your neighborhood on Halloween night and trick-or-treating without a costume on? Have you done that yourself? I think it is important for people to where a costume if they are planning to go trick-or-treating to get candy for themselves. Halloween is not only for getting candy and scaring each other, but it is also meant for dressing up. It doesn’t matter what type of costume you have on or even if you wore it the year before. Some people may think that dressing up is just for little kids, but it really isn’t. Many people our age and older dress up on Halloween, and it is a lot of fun. The sweet, sticky, delicious candy people give out costs money, and depending on what neighborhood you live in and how many people come through on Halloween, adults can spend a lot of money. Some of the kids who do put a lot of effort into dressing up may not be able to get any candy if it is all hogged by the people who don’t where a costume. Dressing up is the least you could do. If you do not want to dress up, I think your best option would be to stay home and hand out candy. This is fun too. You get to see the different varieties of costumes people have chosen, and you don’t have to worry about being super tired the next day from running around all night. Whatever you choose to do this Halloween, I think its only fair to dress up if you plan to go trick-or-treating. Happy Halloween!

Drip Drop Retold by: Avery Grace Raney

As a teenage girl sat on the couch at the camp house, a frightening headline flashed across the television: Serial Killer on the Loose.

The girl ran and locked all the doors and windows and her dog ran upstairs. She went up stairs after a while and crawled under the warm covers. She stuck her hand under the bed like she did every night for her dog to lick it and he did.

Close to midnight she heard a dripping sound. She went downstairs and turned off all the water sources in the kitchen and downstairs bathroom, and she went back to her room upstairs.

Around two o’ clock she woke up to more dripping so she turned off all the water sources upstairs.

Around five o’clock she woke up to a loud drip drop. By this time, she was getting annoyed, so she followed the sound to her closet. She opened the door, and there lies her dog who had bled to death. There on the wall in blood says HUMANS CAN LICK TOO.........

While at the Fair By: Avery Grace Raney

This year is the 154th annual state fair. The opening day was October 2, 2013 and the closing day was October 13, 2013. The fair is held at the Mississippi Fairgrounds in Jackson, Mississippi. The grounds cover 100 acres and all 100 of them contained rides, food stands, and side show performances, and even some famous bands performed. Besides the warm, fresh, sugar coated funnel cake and sticky candy apples, the fair has much more to offer. Rides are one of the main attractions at the Mississippi State Fair! One of the most famous rides is the Ring of Fire, or the FireBall. People wait in long lines that last for an hour just to get the rush of going upside down! Yet, there aren’t just scary rides meant for adults. The Mississippi State Fair has a children section with rides appropriate for children of all ages! This makes the fair great for a family night out!
