Having read your community newsletter (which I think is great), I would like to introduce myself. I'm Michelle Aplin a new resident of Tarras. My hubby, Jason, and I are enjoying life in Tarras very much. We are living out of cabins and containers whilst our house is being built...779 Ardgour, very different to Auckland where we initially settled. We arrived in New Zealand 10 years ago from the UK. Tarras SchoolOn behalf of all the students, staff and families of Tarras School I would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to all the local sheep farmers who supported FOTS by donating sheep for the Wanaka A&P Show.Shirlmar, Nine Mile, Forest Range, Longacre, Geordie Hills, Long Gully, Cloudy Peak, Bendigo, Lindis Downs, Tarras Downs and Pete Jolly. The students with community support sold books of raffle tickets too. We were happy to have raised just over $3,000 through this fundraiser towards school camp. Of course we must acknowledge the whanau support who without their dedication the Wanaka A&P Show stall would not have happened. We would also like to thank Ravensdown who donated money to FOTS for the lamb they used for their own stand. Our students are now very excited and happy that they have achieved their goal and can now dream about the adventures they will have up in Wellington in June.

It is with great sadness that we are farewelling Melissa from her position as Principal Release Teacher. Melissa has decided that it is time to support her husband who is taking on a new adventure. We will all look forward to the days she comes back to visit us. I have already got her to sign a contract that ties her down to coming and writing the school end of year play!! Melissa, we wish you and your whanau all the best with the future. We have had good interest in the position and we are hoping that we can employ a new release teacher before the start of Term 2.

The sports for this term are rounding up, swim sports are all finished with Sophie and Bronny representing the Upper Clutha Zone in the Central Otago Swimsports. All the students took part in a triathlon in Omakau, Cash was the star here coming 3rd in his age group against Poolburn and Omakau students. Now we are all confident bike riders I have high hopes for more placings next year.

The school holidays are fast approaching with Easter giving us a long weekend. School will close on 13th April and start again on Monday 30th April. In consultation with parents we have decided to trial a 2.30pm finish time for Term 2 & 3 with a review before Term 4. We are hoping that this will enable our students to get to more sporting/social clubs in Cromwell or Wanaka and arrive on time, with hopefully less parent stress!

Tarras PlaygroupEarly in Term 1 we changed the meeting day for

Playgroup. We are now meeting on a

Wednesday morning from 9am-12pm. This has

seen an even bigger increase in numbers

attending regularly. It is great to see such a

range of wee ones around the area all ranging

from newborns through to 4 year olds. We

have Grace from REAP coming to visit on

Wednesday 11 April to do a range of Te Reo

activities with all ages.

Congratulations to Kimberley, Sam and Huxley

Glass on the arrival of August. At 2 weeks old,

August has already joined in with all the other

little ones at Playgroup.

Happy Birthday to Winter Waller and Ella

Bennett. Both girls are 3!

Dog Trials Thank you to everyone who supported us for

the catering at the recent dog trials. All the

donations of food, raffle and auction items help

make this event possible for us. We are now in

the stages of organising the catering for the

Otago Regional Dog Trials coming up on the

18-19 of April. For those of you who missed out

on a phone call for the local trials, don't worry,

we have you on our list for the Regionals. We

will be starting to make phone calls over the

next week or two.

We had an enjoyable meal afterwards at the theatre. Our April outing on Thursday 12th is a return visit to Madge Snow’s garden in Wanaka. This time we are welcome to take cuttings etc. Time to be advised.
