TAS TALKSTHE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER OF THE ARMIDALE SCHOOL

Wednesday 7 August, 2o13 Term 3 Week 4House on Duty White, 0439 041 330

ACTING HEADMASTER, ALAN JONESIt has been another very busy week for the students at TAS.

Last Thursday afternoon the 1st XI Football team took on the might of St Joseph’s College (GPS Premiers 2012) in Sydney in the Quarter Final of the CIS Football Knockout and acquitted themselves in a most creditable manner. While not coming away with a win Coach Newton could not speak highly enough about their behaviour both on and off the field.

Our second rugby journey to Sydney in the GPS competition took place the next day. The matches against Shore were of a very high standard and a good number of TAS teams won their matches and the relationship between the two schools continues to prosper. I have to acknowledge the commitment of our staff who travel down and back with their teams and who will do so on another two occasions.

If you consult the school website you will note that there are great things happening in the area of Creative Arts and at the Hoskins Centre.

The Year 8 “Tasibald” staff portrait competition certainly produced some interesting interpretations from photographs taken of the TAS teaching staff – myself included.

There was the very exciting announcement that “Westside Story” will be the next musical production presented by the school and “Curtain Up” the HSC Drama Showcase is taking place this Thursday evening from 6.30 pm.

There are also a number of quality productions in the Hoskins Centre in the coming weeks including one man plays and jazz concerts.

This Friday Night in the Hoskins Centre is the inaugural TAS Speakers Careers night where a number of successful local professionals and business people have been invited to the school to talk about their careers and offer advice. Many of the guest speakers will be TAS Old Boys so what they will have to say will be very pertinent. Mr Jason Lincoln and members of the TAS Speakers Group will host this presentation.

We look forward to welcoming Mr Guest back next week.

P&F ASSOCIATION, SANDRA KAYNES - PRESIDENT

COUNSELLOR, ROB HADFIELD

Over the weekend I saw a number of films being shown at the International Film Festival here in Armidale. I was in awe of the depth of creativity that film directors, cinematographers and actors displayed in these films. More than that, I was taken by the depth of perception and interpretation of human experience, which is possible through film. Human nature at its very best and worst was captured through scene after scene. The potential for change and development within human personality was also revealed. Film is a powerful medium. Sometimes our emotions were taken to new depths of power and awareness as we lived out the story lines together as an audience. Altogether there was much food for thought that will receive attention for a very long time - and a number of conversations.

There is a great capacity for goodness in human life as well as a capacity for great evil. Over and over again we are presented with choices and the responsibility for the decisions we are making. Always these are within contexts of different kinds that shape and influence the ways we will lean at any one time. This is the human condition and situation. Values are not theoretical; they are lived realities that must be discerned in the complexity of situations that require a process of discernment and assessment from among competing possibilities. For all of us these issues deserve discussion on a continuing basis.

The rush to negative judgement towards others is only possible if we are blind to our own flaws, mistakes, weaknesses and prejudices. The rush to hostile judgement towards ourselves is only possible if we ignore the potential for change and positive goodness that is available to us. We cannot understand human life without reference to Auschwitz (and so many other awful expressions of evil). Not can we understand human life without reference to all those events in which people have changed the face of a situation through self-sacrificial love. Human life is about this struggle – it is personal, relational, social and cultural. We cannot escape the responsibility.

TAS P&F & Fete Meeting – Wednesday 7 August - tonightOur next P&F Meeting is tonight 7 August at 7.00pm in the Lower Maxwell Room. Year 9 Geography Field TripWhen? 20 and 21 AugustWhere? Coffs HarbourWho? All of Year 9How much will it cost? Approximately $50 to cover travel and food. Why? As a part of our unit of study this term, which investigates the factors that cause change in communities, we will be conducting a case study of Coffs Harbour - its environment, management, industries, past and future. This will also be an op-portunity for us to model a Research Action Plan before the boys begin work on their own. The RAP is the major assessment component for the semester. We will be staying at Bishop Druitt College, hearing from a variety of guest speakers, visiting the National Maritime Research Centre and Muttonbird Island, as well as gathering some of our own primary data in the CBD. We will arrive back on the Wednesday afternoon in time for day boys to catch buses.

Clemson CupCongratulations to all our Middle School Public Speakers who competed in the Clemson Cup yesterday. Well done to Owen Chandler from Ross House who was the winner of this section. I was delighted to witness such quality performances. Special thanks to our senior boys who continue to do such an outstanding job in supporting these young men.

TAS Speaker’s Careers NightWe look forward to welcoming our Senior School boys and parents to Hoskins this Friday night at 6:30pm to hear from some of our inspiring Old Boys and successful members of the Armidale community about their careers and opportunities more broadly in their field of endeavour. We also look forward to hearing about the employment process from the chief Careers Counsellor at UNE, Rebecca Di Donato and President of TAS Old Boys, Mr Mark Berry.

SHORE VisitOn Saturday we thoroughly enjoyed our day at Northbridge and the games were played in magnificent spirit. I was very proud of both the impressive way our young men represented the school and support of our families which continues to amaze our competitors. Congratulations to our 1st XV on an impressive 29-5 victory on the day.

St Joseph’s College this weekendThis weekend we host Joeys in rugby on what will be a wonderful day for our community. All boys will be playing on the day culminating in our 1st XV running out at 12:15pm. We are encouraging our players to remain behind and support our 1st XV as we aim to build on the positive school spirit that is occurring in so many areas at the moment.

Old Boys’ WeekendThis is a gentle reminder that the weekend of 24 August is Old Boy’s Weekend. We will also be hosting the King’s School on the Saturday in what will be an enormous weekend of activity for our entire school community. We are hoping that our boys will be able to support the day both as spectators and participants. The weekend includes a a debate between the TAS 1st team and an Old Boys Representative team. This will be on Friday evening at 6.00pm in the Hoskins Theatre.More scheduling details will appear in coming weeks.

CIS Cup FootballI congratulate again our 1st XI on making it to the Quarter Final of this prestigious competition. Canteen/BBQMany thanks to Heather Williams, Lesley Bishop and all who helped support both the Training BBQ on Wednesday (which will continue to operate each week) and TAS' Canteen Duty at the Hockey Centre on Friday afternoon and evening. Everyone's efforts are greatly appreciated by the players and the wider hockey community in general.

U11s WhiteThe TAS White U11s Hockey team versed up against City Stingers once more on Friday afternoon, after a week off due to the HNSW Womens Veterans Carnival held at the hockey Centre the previous weekend. Having beaten the Stingers in their last encounter to take their first win for the season, the Whites were keen to put their new improved formula back into action. With some growing confidence being shown by all players as they learn new positions and establish their role in the team, the team play was impressive, and all worked hard on and off the ball to support each other. Despite some quality Stinger attempts, none could get past keeper Cassidy Williams and the back line of Henry Moore and Stewart Williams. Working hard in the halves and forwards, Alistair Le Surf, Dominic Ferguson and Alexander Gibson all showed solid skills. Zac Matherson was ever-impressive in his running game and was rewarded with two keen goals, whilst Josiah Alcorn finished an excellent pass from Ferguson to score the third of TAS' three unanswered goals. This Friday the Whites play Servies Red on T2 at 4.15pm.

U11s BluesThe TAS under 11 blues hockey team played an exciting 5 all draw with City Wasps last friday. In what was a very tight contest the boys worked together particularly well with a much improved structure. In his first attempt as goal keeper Cameron Le Surf did an outstanding job pulling off some great saves. Sam Behrend showed some good skills slotting home 3 goals. In all, all of the boys played very well against a skilled opposition. This weeks game will be against City Stingers at 4:15pm on Friday as usual.

Mike BallTAS U13sWith numerous players out last week due to Rugby and other commitments, the remaining TAS U13s were valiant in their game against Servies. Short no less than 5 quality players, those who did play rallied together beautifully to hold the Servies team to a one nil lead at half time. With many good chances missed, TAS decided that they must shorten their game and support each other more. Running on at second half, the boys were enthusiastic and were going to give it their best despite the odds. This great attitude produced a fine TAS goal through half Liam Matherson, however, unfortunately and despite keeper Zac Mather-son's solid efforts, the Servies team began to get on top and took out the game 6-1 in the end. Many thanks to the Under 11s players who filled in on the night and it was also great to see some fine efforts from regulars like Jonothan Chamberlain, Floyd Hardingham and Sam Ruba. This Friday the U13s play City Hornets on T1 at 5pm.

West Side Story Information Evening Want to hear about how we’re totally gutting the theatre and building a down town NYC streetscape? About what goes on at auditions? The roles in the show? How rehearsals will be structured? How we’re going to fit such a large orchestra in the theatre? All these questions and more will be answered at a short Information Evening on Wednesday 14 August at 5pm in the Hoskins theatre. Members of the creative and technical team will be on hand to reveal all... Plus, in an exciting new development, we will now be forming a treble choir which will enhance the musical accompaniment of the production. Students will appear in certain items of the show as an extension of the chorus. They will not be ‘characters’ as such, but rather featured musicians and appear as part of our adventurous ‘urban’ set. And guess what? Students can audition with a song of their choice that demonstrates their vocal ability and range - how easy is that?! :

HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL, MARK HARRISON

Role ModelsIt’s a truism perhaps but, with the exception of our efforts, one of the best influences on your sons’ lives would have to be their healthy interactions with senior students and the student leaders of their school. Here in Middle School there’s actual proof of such interaction. Over the last twelve months Year 10 and 11 boys, organised by Sam Doyle, Waseem Sajeev and Matt Maunder, have voluntarily conducted weekly debating and public speaking lunchtime meetings. Increasingly, school prefects have attended and contributed to town meetings. Of note, in our recent assemblies, both Sam Hutton and Will Frost have advised Middle School boys about the necessity of balance between academic and sporting commitments – such advice is timely considering the jockeying demands of Term 3.

Now, just two weeks shy of their trial exams, the Prefects and other seniors are conducting, overseeing and refereeing lunchtime Touch games for interested Middle School students on Backfield. Because you don’t teach them, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this recent activity is an unsophisticated senior work-avoidance ploy; because I do teach (many of ) them, I know that it is not. Rather, it’s a genuine effort to ‘get to know’ the younger boys. The aims of these older students are to encourage easy and confident interaction between boys of all ages and their success is real.

An example of this confident interaction occurred last Friday when Year 6 student, Brayden Hadfield, addressed the Middle and Senior Schools at Prefects’ Assembly, encouraging them to contribute to his collection of sporting ‘equipment’ to be sent to St Christopher’s Orphanage in Fiji. It’s not the content that amazed me. TAS is, after all, a Round Square School. The delivery is what amazed me: word perfect, no notes, calm voice - a supremely effective delivery. The resounding applause at the completion of Brayden’s assembly contribution is not only an endorsement of the cause, but also an unreserved recommendation of this very young boy. Already, he has collected enough as-new but ‘too small’ boots to equip a football team. In another ‘four pairs’ time, he’ll have achieved a ‘well-shod’ rugby team. With the promise of one soccer ball and a rugby one, Brayden’s ‘service to others’ initiative is destined to succeed. Four prefects commented on ‘that amazing kid’ at lunch on Friday. I directed them to the ‘kid’ himself in his Year 6 Home Room.

Round Square Exchange OpportunitiesOn Friday we farewelled Year 8 students: Thomas Fenner (seen right centre with Mr Harrison and Ryan Hyde) and Ryan Hyde, both from Kings College, Auckland. While a two-week stay is short, I know that these boys will take with them good and lasting memories of their time at TAS. From the brief conversations I had with them at Middle School and in prep, I know that each fully immersed himself in academic and sporting activities and both leave us with the promise of continuing contact with a number of our Year 8 TAS students. Circumstances permitting, these exchanges present wonderful opportunities for boys to experience difference in various ways and we are lucky to have had Ryan and Thomas staying with us over the last fortnight.

TAS Old Boy Sam Bailey

Last Thursday all Middle School boys and two Year 11 classes attended Sam Bailey’s (OB 1980-85) address in Hoskins. To say that Sam’s speech, concerning his creation of opportunity in otherwise adverse, indeed prohibitive, circumstances, was successful is to understate Sam’s effect on his Hoskins-capacity audience. His speech was compelling and his message, being to make the best of what life deals to us, was inspired. As indicated previously, Sam was involved in a serious car accident, resulting in paraplegia, soon after he left TAS. Amongst other achievements, he has overcome so many obstacles to become a farmer, business man and, recently, a helicopter pilot. It is difficult to remember the last time I sat with an audience so quiet that, if you closed your eyes, you’d easily believe you were in a room with someone speaking exclusively to you. In fact this perception is indicative of Sam’s success as I think this was how everyone felt during his talk.

Year 8 Parent/Teacher Interviews and Stage 5 Elective Subject Information

Parent/Teacher interviews will be conducted from 3:30 – 6:00pm in the Memorial Hall on Thursday 8 August and from 11:45am – 12:30pm in the Hoskins Centre on Friday 9 August and again from 1:40 – 5:30pm. Cindy Barnsley, Middle School Curriculum Coordinator, will outline Elective subject information for Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) study at TAS in 2014 and 2015. For parents and boys who have Thursday interviews, Cindy will speak to you at 6:15pm in Big School. For those who have Friday interviews, Cindy will speak to you at 11:45am in Hoskins. It is important that you attend Cindy Barnsley’s talk - from the emails we’ve received thus far, this will involve almost all Year 8 families. However, for those parents unable to attend, this important information will be emailed to you. It’s good the interviews are conducted at this time of the year as boys and parents will have the opportunity and enough time to discuss and be advised about sensible and importantly, enjoyable, subject choices for the next two years.

Middle School Public Speaking for the Clemson Cup

A photo of a couple embracing amidst the devastation of an urban landscape devastated by natural disaster provided rich inspiration for Owen Chandler of Year 7, who won the Middle School public speaking section of the inter-house Clemson Cup on Tuesday. In a powerful and confident oration, Owen focussed not so much on the devastation itself, but the emotion of sadness that the couple’s embrace represented, and the role of sadness in society generally.

The Hoskins Theatre was filled with students supporting the six Middle School speakers representing their houses: Will Grant (Abbott), Ziggy Harris (Broughton), Mike Nyathi (Croft), Tom Wright (Green), Liam Donaldson (Tyrrell) and Owen Chandler (Ross). Each speaker had been given a photo to speak about; while some of the speakers provided a literal interpretation, others relied on metaphor.

Adjudicator Mark Harrison congratulated all the speakers on their performances and the abstracted thinking the conveyed, stat-ing Owen’s speech was “sensible, subtle, and oh so smart”.Congratulations Owen.

Tezukayama Elementary School - Itinerary and OrganisationThe bi-annual visit from Tezukayama is almost upon us, with 47 students and staff arriving on the afternoon of Monday August 19. It will be an action packed week, with activities ranging from PE tabloids, classroom craft to normal lessons in core learning areas. The visitors will also visit Ebor and its surrounds and Uralla, for horse riding and visits to the Foundry and McCrossin’s mill. It is a wonderful opportunity for all out children to play host to students from another culture and we look forward to this busy week. I hope your children will arrive home with stories of new friendships and cultural experiences. Thank you to all our families who have extended the generous hand of friendship by hosting children and a wiki will be set up soon with details of the arrangements, as well as keeping track of some of the photos from the activities.

Rough Games in PlaygroundI have spoken to the whole school today about playing rough games in our playgrounds. While there is a time and place for games that push boundaries, often at school these boundaries become blurred and the result is an unfortunate injury, often accidental. Learning where these limits lie, and being respectful of others throughout is often a complicated lesson – the line in the sand is not always easily recognized until it is crossed. Today we spoke of not crossing that line, and certainly not ignoring an instruction to stop certain activities if asked by staff. We would appreciate support from home on this matter by you taking the time to discuss this concept with your children.

Promptness to SchoolPlease ensure children are at school before 8:45am ready for the start of the day. The morning routine is an important one and it can be disruptive if children arrive once a lesson has commenced. If your child is late please escort them to the Junior School Reception desk prior to heading to the classroom. We would also like to reinforce the need to used the correct car parks and collection points, thus minimizing the traffic on our campus wherever possible.

Junior School playground is not supervised before 8.15 am in the morning. While there may be occasions when some children need to arrive at school earlier than this time for a school, the activity or occasion would be associated with the appropriate supervision. We thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Sam Bailey – An inspirational visit from an Old BoyWe were very privileged to have Sam and Jenny Bailey visit us in Junior School to address all our students during assembly. Sam is an old boy who told us of his wonderful life at TAS and since, including the circumstances of the accident which left him a quadriplegic. To hear his perspective on life (and love) was no lost on any of us, including our youngest, who sat and listened quietly and respectfully. Having talked to many students since, I was very pleased that much of what was said had such an influence and below in this edition of TAS Talks, some of the boys have included their thoughts on what they heard.

Happy Birthday Wishes Husdon Morris, Evan Kwan and Marcus Hempel.

Sam Bailey came to the Junior School and spoke at our assembly last week, here are some of the comments made by our Year 5 students:

Sam Bailey Sam Bailey is a quadriplegic who is going to become the first to ride and drive a helicopter. He is a successful farmer. His story is exquisite and sad too, and he has been on ABC. He has made me feel that nothing is impossible and he reminded me to be brave. When he came to our assembly, after I received my award, I got to shake the hand of the man who does not need wings to fly. Sam is a person whose life is sad but he is a man that has overpowered sadness and made lots of light. He is my Australian Hero.

Daniel RamazaniInspirational Hero Sam Bailey is one of the most inspirational guys I have ever met. His story is one of the greatest I have ever heard. He says to always follow your dreams no matter how many obstacles the world throws at you. He wants to be the first quadriplegic to fly a helicopter. He has completed other great goals as well. He enjoys flying his ultraflight, becoming an author, becoming a successful farmer and being a role model to children. His amazing but dreadful story is one for all to hear. He was not wearing his seatbelt going about 150km per hour. The front wheel popped and the car rolled. Mr. Bailey flung out the back window and was lying on the road. The first thing he said to the people beside him, “I hope I’m not in a wheelchair.” Unfortunately he was. Mr. Bailey has made me feel that there is no obstacle in life that can stop you doing what you love. You can fulfuil your goals no matter how big or small they are nor how many.

Cotter LitchfieldNever Give Up After Mr Bailey’s talk to the TAS junior school I was completely mine blown! I couldn’t believe he could do all this as a quadriplegic. When I heard that he was coming to speak to us I thought it would be another one of those boring talks but I got it completely wrong. He was a very inspirational man who is a great role model for anyone, especially for those that are going through a tough time in life. I feel incredibly sorry for Mr Bailey but in one way I don’t because it seems like he wouldn’t have gone further than if he wasn’t a quadriplegic. It must have been extremely frustrating to not be able to do things that a non-quadriplegic could do, but Mr Bailey never gave up and tried his hardest at everything. Look how far he has gone! Mr Bailey is an extremely inspirational man. After that talk I felt so very much determined, I could do anything. Mr Bailey was a very determined man and he could do anything if he put his mind to it!

Charlie Rutledge Yesterday I was fortunate to hear past TAS student, Sam Bailey. Sam Bailey is a quadriplegic that can do a lot of cool things. He inspired me that just because something has gone wrong it does not mean your life has been ruined. Enjoy what you have!

Dillon Hill Yesterday I was fortunate to meet former TAS boy, Sam Bailey. Sam is a quadriplegic man who has learnt to do the impossible. He has taught everyone to never give up, push yourself forward, move on, adapt and overcome. Sam’s talk was truly awe-inspiring.

Christmas Child AppealYear 5 students are very excited about leading this community service opportunity in the Junior School, "Operation Christmas Child". We will start this venture following our assembly this week and will have weekly updates as to what things need to be donated each week. Year 5 have invited Mrs Stannard to come and speak to the whole Junior School during our assembly, as she is the Armidale co-ordinator and was fortunate enough to see gifts being handed out toneedy children in Vietnam at the start of this year.If you are eager to get started, please cover a shoe box (base and lid separately) in christmas paper and deliver to either of the Year 5 classrooms ready to be filled with christmas presents.Thank you, Year 5 students and teachers.

Fruit & Veg month August 26 - Sept 20 The school has chosen to participate in this month of promotion for healthy eating, particularly focusing on eating more fruit and vegetables. This is particularly relevant at the moment as we embark on our new Crunch and Sip program in the school. In addition, I would like to pass on comment from a number of our teachers who have noticed children in their classes who seem particularly tired, especially after the weekends. We ask that all families work towards using the weekend as an opportunity to have a great time but also refresh children so that Monday at school is as effective as possible. Please know, however, that the school will be contact if there are any major or specific concerns.

Lost PropertyThe JS Lost Property box is still located in the Homework Centre and access is available every day after school. After a period of time, all unclaimed and unnamed items are removed and taken to the School laundry where they are stored until the end of the school year, before being donated to charity.

HockeyU11 Girls - by the U11 hockey girlsOn Saturday the U11 girls hockey team played PLC. Unfortunately, PLC were too strong and scored a number of goals. Zoe Strelitz scored the only goal for TAS, from her position on the wing. Nikki Simmons did a fantastic job as our goal keeper this week. We look forward to consolidating our skills in training this week before our next match on Saturday. This coming weekend we play Harlies at 10.30am. See you there!

U11 Boys - Mike Ball The TAS under 11 Blues hockey team played an exciting 5 all draw with City Wasps last friday.

TAS U13sWith numerous players out last week due to Rugby and other commitments, the remaining TAS U13s were valiant in their game against Servies. This great attitude produced a fine TAS goal through half Liam Matherson, however, unfortunately and despite keeper Zac Matherson's solid efforts, the Servies team began to get on top and took out the game 6-1 in the end. Many thanks to the Under 11s players who filled in on the night and it was also great to see some fine efforts from regulars like Jonothan Chamberlain, Floyd Hardingham and Sam Ruba. This Friday the U13s play City Hornets on T1 at 5pm.

SoccerTAS Tigers vs TAS Trucks - Ms BromwichWe had a ripper of a game last Monday against the TAS Trucks. The Tigers were one man short. This only made them more determined. The team consistently talked to each other, telling each other where to move to, for the best pass. They applied some of the new skills and were more confident with tackling their opponents. This teamwork resulted in a goal within the first two minutes. We were delighted with our final score 4/1 and look forward for next weeks challenge.Bring it on!

TAS/St Johns Tonkas v DK Power - Matt MeehanOn Saturday the Tonkas played a fantastic game of football against DK Power. Solomon Layton played an outstanding game and made many attacking moves plus kicked 2 goals. Sam Meehan showed plenty of skill with both feet and played brilliantly. Josh Pongrass and Alex Webber did a great job as our goalies this week and held DK to one goal. Campbell Aitkin showed plenty of courage throughout the game. Lachlan Costello scored a brilliant goal by kicking the ball over the goalie's head. This week were fortunate to be able to call upon the services of Beatrice Henzell from the TAS Transformers. Beatrice played a tremendous game and was awarded player of the week. TAS/St Johns won 4-1.

NetballTopaz vs Golden Unicorns - Mrs TrenerryTopaz dominated again on Saturday when they met a younger and less experienced Unicorns outfit. TOPAZ are playing very well together and their improvement is exciting to see. Passes were excellent this week with a much improved idea of moving into spaces. All players showed an improvement with their movement around the court but especially pleasing were Stephanie Evitt, Grace Smith, Isabel Newton, Grace Pennington, Rachael Kenrick and Casey Smith. Lucy Caldwell and Charlotte Portell were always dependable. Goals were scored in each quarter with an impressive tally of 14. Most exciting of all was Miss Persistence, Lucy Young, scoring her debut goal right near the end of the game! Refreshments provided by the Caldwells were appreciated by all players. We only have 2 more games left in the competition with next week's game against Sunbeams and the final game on 24th August against Rainbows. We have a bye on 17 August.
