Henrico County, Virginia
In Henrico County, Virginia, 25,000 middle and high school students are
using Apple 1 to 1 Learning Solutions. The Henrico County Public
Schools! diverse ethnic and socioeconomic population is drawn from
high-density urban areas, rural regions, and high-tech suburban

Students! standardized achievement test scores have raised in all 11 core

population that is nearly all African American, with 52 percent receiving
free or reduced-price lunch. After a year as one of the first pilot
schools— in which iBook laptop computers were distributed to all sixth
grade students — Malcolm X students have made dramatic improvements
in their learning. A full 83 percent of the students who are now seventh
graders are meeting or exceeding state standards in writing (the state
average is 63 percent). Additionally, 63 percent are meeting or exceeding
the state standards for reading (the state average in this category is 49
percent).
Altoona, Pennsylvania - Irving Elementary School

State of Maine 7th and 8th Grade Students
In his 2001 State of the State address, Maine Governor Angus King shared
his vision that “Maine people will be among the best-educated in the
world” and that Maine would become “the most technologically capable
society on earth.” The Maine Department of Education provided Apple 1
to 1 Learning solutions to each and every student and teacher in every
Maine middle school. Today, Apple 1 to 1 Learning Solutions are making
a difference for 36,000 7th and 8th grade students and teachers across
the state. Schools in urban, suburban, and rural areas, including students
from every socioeconomic background, are reporting that student
engagement and achievement are disciplinary problems are down.
Bradenton, Florida - Manatee School District
Florida!s Manatee County School District has implemented Apple 1 to 1
Learning solution in 22 elementary and secondary classrooms. Since the
initiative began, the level of student engagement has skyrocketed.
Absences by student who have the iBook laptops have declined by almost
40 percent, while the quality of work done has increased dramatically.
Two-thirds of students report they watch less television and spend more
time doing homework (and showing their parents learn how to use the
iBooks). Ongoing “parent night” gatherings keep families and tcommunity
informed of the progress of the 1 to 1 initiative.
