Front Cover

Typography

The font styles used are mostly Sans Serif, this font style shows

modern elements which is conventional for the target audience.

The bold text draws the reader to the important parts such as the

masthead and coverlines. This dictates where the audience

should look first. The name 'Alexandra' is in Black and written in a

larger Serif font. This is one of the only parts of text in black, this

is because the main article is about her, so therefore they want

her name to stand out on the magazine. This attracts a larger

audience, as people who like this artist may buy the magazine to

discover similar artists.

Colour

The main colours used are pink and yellow. Pink connotes femininity, this is conventional as

the magazine is female leaning. The yellow stands out against the pink, this draws the

reader towards an important parts of the magazine or article such as the word 'EXPOSED' in

the quote 'snogging stars exposed'. The use of the word exposed makes the article sound

more dramatic and interesting. The colour scheme is conventional as it is girly and clearly

outlines stand out articles and phrases, and the target audience is mainly young female

based so would be more likely to buy the magazine if associated with a young and feminine colour like pink.

Image

The images used are of popular artists and style tips. This is conventional for the target

audience, as they are mainly female so are attracted to girly things such as style and

clothing. The artists featured are

Alexandra Burke

JLS

Jonas Brothers

Cheryl Cole

Ashley Tisdale

Kristen Stewart

These are all celebrities that influence young girls. The images are all close ups as

this enables the reader to recognise the artists easily and also, it shows the artists

facial expressions. The images are conventional for this genre as the music artists

perform pop music and the others like Kristen Stewart are also associated with a

young, female audience.

Layout

This magazine has a cluttered layout to make it look more

appealing to the younger target audience, because it is

filled with exciting articles. The route of the eye is used,

drawing the audience across the masthead, for them to

recognise the magazine, through the main cover artist to

encourage readers to buy the magazine, and then across

the bottom through the other exciting articles and

competitions, which encourages a wider target audience.

The masthead is in a conventional place as it is where the

reader first looks. The left third is also used, as the other

important articles and competition are on the left side.

Language/Mode of address

The language used on the front cover is conventional for the genre of music. It uses

simple language, so it is accessible and easy to read for the young target audience.

The magazine also uses informal words such as ‘snogging’. This also appeals to the

younger-target audience as it uses language they would use with their friends,

making it look more inviting. If they had used formal, complicated words, that the

audience didn’t understand, they would be put off reading the magazine as it does

not appeal to them.

Contents page

Typography The fonts used on the contents page are mostly Serif

fonts. This appeals to the target audience as it is more

girly and young. This is conventional as the target

audience of Top of the Pops is young and female-leaning,

so this magazine contents page will appeal to them. The

categories stand out on the contents page as they are

black and in a different font. They also have a red heart

in two of the categories such as ‘We heart boys’. This is

Page 3: Task 2

conventional as it makes it more accessible for the young target audience, because

they will know where to look straight away to find the articles that they want for

example shopping or competitions.

Colour The main colours used on the contents page are white, pink and black. The pink is

quite girly to satisfy the female-leaning audience, however the black and white are

neutral so therefore can appeal to either sex. The text is mainly black which stands

out against the pink and white to make them the first things the audience see. This

is conventional as it makes the magazine contents page easy to read, which is

essential for a pre-teen magazine.

Images The images used on the contents page are conventional for the genre of music. The

artists on the contents page are smiling and posing for the photo using positive body

language. This is conventional as pop music is supposed to be happy and cheerful , so

the images portray this. The lighting used is bright to make the scene bright. The

artists featured on the contents page are:

- Tinie Tempah

- Jessie J

- George from Union J

This is conventional as these are current celebrities in the pop industry. This appeals to the target audience.

Layout

The layout of the contents page is conventional as it

uses the route of the eye and the left third. This is

conventional, as the route of the eye is where the

reader looks, so the masthead is across the top,

then it goes through all of the article categories,

then through the pictures at the bottom. The left

third is also used as the shopping category is on the

left side.

Language/Mode of address

The language used on the contents page is conventional. It uses simple language, so

it is accessible and easy to read for the young target audience. The contents page

uses informal language such as ‘super-girly’. This also appeals to the younger-target

audience as it uses language they would use with their friends, making it look more

inviting. If they had used formal, complicated words, that the audience didn’t

Page 4: Task 2

understand, they would be put off reading the magazine as it does not appeal to them.

Double Page Spread

Typography The fonts used on the double page spread is

conventional for the type of genre. The Serif fonts

appeal to the younger target audience. The

masthead is in a serif font and the word ‘spotlight’

is in pink. This draws attention to this word and

appeals to the target audience as it looks girly and interesting. It also makes it stand out.

Colour

The colours used on the double page spread are conventional. The main colours used are

Pink, White, and Black. This is conventional as pink and white connote youth, innocence and

purity, this appeals to the young, female-leaning audience. The background is black which

makes the white and pink stand out more.

Images

The images used on the double page spread are conventional for the genre of music. This is

because the artists are smiling and posing for the photo, making it more inviting and happy,

which appeals to the young target audience. The lighting used is bright, which is

conventional because if it was dark it would have negative connotations which would not

appeal to this genre of music. The article is about Kimberley Walsh, formally in girl group Girls Aloud. This is conventional as she is a pop artist, who appeals to young females.

Layout

The layout used is conventional as it also uses the route of the eye,

which is where the reader will look first. First it goes through the

masthead, then through the article and then across the bottom

through a pull quote.

Page 5: Task 2

Language/Mode of address

The language used on the double page spread is conventional as it is simple and easy to

read. This is conventional as the target audience is young, so if the language was

complicated they would not be able to understand and would be put off reading the

magazine. The language used is also informal, using words such as ‘teased’. This appeals to

the target audience as it is the sort of language they would use with their friends, making

the article appealing and inviting.
