Tasmania Together 10 Year Review

Community consultations have commenced as part of the 10 Year Review of Tasmania Together.

Tasmania Together is the community‟s plan for the future. It‟s what thousands of people and organisations said they wanted Tasmania to be like in 2020.

The Review provides an ideal opportunity for the Tasmania Together Progress Board to hear from the community and respond to any changes in community priorities.

Tasmania Together is not a plan that sits on a shelf.

The plan is used to influence government, business and community decision making. It focuses on progress in areas of importance to the Tasmanian community.

The last review was held in 2005-06 and resulted in significant changes to Tasmania Together. The number of goals was reduced and new benchmarks were added. Details on each benchmark including progress towards the targets can be found at www.ttbenchmarks.com.au

New issues added to the plan included strengthening communities, housing availability and affordability, road safety, climate change and health waiting lists. The revised plan is available on the website or, if you would like a hard copy, contact the Tasmania Together Secretariat.

The 10 Year Review was launched by the Premier on 21 September.

This review process seeks to hear about what matters to you and/or your family:

Latrobe Library Survey

Following correspondence from Council, the Department of Education‟s Community Knowledge Network is conducting community consultation in relation to potentially changing the current hours of operation at the Latrobe Library.

The Latrobe Library is located within the Latrobe Post Office reserve in Gilbert Street, Latrobe and is currently open from 1pm until 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday - a total of 16 hours per week.

Mrs Kerrie Blyth, Information Services Coordinator of Devonport LINC advises that “the total hours allocated to each branch library are based on comparative demand for services across the statewide library network. Within this total, the actual hours of operation are determined largely by community preferences, coupled with the availability of staff and the need to provide a „logical‟ pattern that is readily understood and accepted by clients.”

Mrs Blyth added that the Community Knowledge Network are happy to consider changing the patterns of the four hour blocks from the current afternoon session to open during one or two mornings a week, if that is supported by a majority of users in the community, however clarified that there is no plan to extend the total weekly open hours beyond 16 hours.

Survey forms are available from the Latrobe Library, Latrobe Online Access Centre, Latrobe Council office or Council‟s website (www.latrobe.tas.gov.au).

Completed surveys should be returned by Monday, November 8 to the Latrobe Library or posted to Branch Library Survey, 21 Oldaker Street, Devonport, 7310.

Latrobe Swimming Club

The Latrobe Swimming Club is an active and vibrant club that has fostered swimming in our community for more than 10 years from the Latrobe Swim Centre in George

Street, Latrobe.

This has been done by the provision of a range of opportunities including beginners learn to swim; stroke correction; stroke refinement and training for both state and national competition.

Over the summer there are regular club nights where participants can measure their rate of improvement and have the chance to socialise poolside with other club members. A BBQ tea is always an attraction at these nights.

In addition to club nights, there are regular team building days where children can be helped with the concept of being a team member and other social skills and aspects of competitive sport.

Currently the club has about 20 competitive swimmers competing on a variety of levels and approximately another 20 members who are learning to swim, as well as their parents. Training is conducted at ability appropriate levels, with some swimmers doing 1 or 2 sessions a week through to the more competitive swimmers doing up to 8 sessions a week.

Through hard work and commitment, under the guidance of coaches Adrian Triffett and Sarah Braid, the competitive swimmers experienced much success in the pool over winter. Year long access to the pool is fundamental to a swimmer‟s progress and can be attributed to the majority of swimmers who travelled to competition coming away with a medal. These included Claire Thomas, Lily Blair, Sarah Turnbull, Sam Curtis, Henry Callendar, Will Thomas, Thea Crantock, Cameron Turnbull, Emily Pickett and Pru Hamdorf. Will and Pru were also selected as members of the Tasmanian All Schools Team and travelled to Brisbane to compete; Sam and Henry have been rewarded by being made members of the state IM Squad as recognition of their successes within their age group and to help them continue to develop; and as well as this 11 junior swimmers were awarded Swimming Australia‟s Junior Excellence awards.

Enquiries can be directed to Adrian Triffett 0448 755 233, Anne Thomas 0400 560 935 or Andrew Hamdorf 0428 354 369.

Pool opening hours over the summer are 9am-6pm Monday - Friday and 10.30am-6pm Weekends and School Holidays. Entry fees are $3.50 or a season‟s family pass for $330.00. Individual season passes are $220. Swim School participants receive a 10% discount.

Tasmania. Worth Celebrating

We all know that there is something special about our State and that it's something worth celebrating

In 2009, the first Sunday in November was set aside to celebrate Tasmania Day. Again this year, a number of local community events will be held on the 7th November and you’re invited to join in the celebrations.

At Port Sorell, the Port Sorell Lions Club in partnership with the Camp Banksia Controlling Authority is hosting a day of free entertainment at Camp Banksia, Anderson Street, Port Sorell from 10am until 3pm.

Local community and volunteer groups will be in attendance to provide displays of interest and entertainment. There will be a free sausage sizzle together with a free cold drink for all attending. Additional hot drinks, hot food, cakes and ice creams will also be available for sale.

Entertainment includes face painting, jumping castle, mini jeeps, sumo suits, kayak rides as well as a bull ride and surf board ride machine. There will be also be dramatic performances, singing and music.

At Latrobe, Latrobe Lions and the Rotary Club of Latrobe, supported by the Latrobe Apex Club, have organised another fun event at Thompson‟s Park (opposite the Australian Axemans Hall of Fame, Bells Parade, Latrobe) from 11am until 3pm.

Kite making and flying will again be a feature of the event along with a free barbecue, face painting, the Scouts hurdy gurdy and more.

St Pat’s Twilight Fair The St Patrick's Primary School Twilight Fair will be held at the school grounds, Bradshaw Street, Latrobe on Friday, 12th November, 2010 from 5pm until 8pm.

The evening will feature many traditional school fair activities such as face painting, food stalls, jumping castle, white elephant stall, cake stalls, raffle, lucky dips, show bags, with the addition of a ferret wheel, Anvers hot chocolates and other speciality treats.

There will also be a variety of delicious food and refreshments so come along and enjoy a night without cooking whilst indulging in the delights of the St Patrick's Twilight Fair.

Latrobe and Districts Youth Centre

The replacement and repainting of the flooring at the Latrobe and Districts Youth Centre is nearing completion (end of November).

At the conclusion of the works, with regular maintenance, the floor is expected to last another 30-35 years and handle the level of annual wear and tear resulting from the extensive use that the facility receives.

Should you wish to utilise the youth centre, please do not hesitate to contact the Caretaker, Mrs Susan Maxfield on 6426 1529.

I Love Food Awards the Start The annual I Love FOOD Awards are Australia's largest peoples' choice restaurant awards created Australia's largest online EAT OUT GUIDE. It is a guide like no other because the places are tried and tested by fellow food lovers.

Congratulations to the House of Anvers who were recently announced the Tasmanian winner of the Dessert/Ice Cream/Gelato section.

The only other coastal business to receive a State Award was Taco Villa in Devonport in the Mexican category.

To explore the EAT OUT GUIDE yourself, go online to www.lifestylefood.com.au/restaurants.

This Award was only the start of a recent spate of Awards for the House of Anvers though.

Head Chef, Peter Halley won the Tas Gateau/Trade section in the Whirlpool Cooking Competition.

The House of Anvers was announced as the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Employer of the Year - Training Award winner.

They are also a national finalist in the National Training Award - Agribusiness section.

And, if that is not enough, they are also awaiting advice on their nomination for a Tasmanian Employer of Choice Award.

Shearwater Park Plan

The Shearwater Park Development Plan was recently adopted by Latrobe Council, providing a master plan for the future development of this area.

Extensive consultation was undertaken with 22 submissions received throughout the development of the plan.

Consequently, a number of actions have been identified and will be implemented in order of priority and funding availability. All up, a costing of $467,000 has been identified to effect all identified actions, based on current costings.

Copies of the Shearwater Park Development Plan are available from the Fast Find section on Council‟s website (www.latrobe.tas.gov.au)

Latrobe Recreation Plan

Latrobe Council was successful in its application to Sport and Recreation Tasmania for funding to progress a development plan to guide future public use and development of the area located within the precinct of Cotton, Stanley, Last and Bradshaw Streets (this includes Perkins Park, Bosworth Park, Latrobe High School, Latrobe Recreation Ground, Picton Grange and St Patrick‟s Primary School).

Consequently, the leisure and open space planning company, Sykes Consulting, was appointed to develop the Latrobe Recreation Area Development Plan.

The area is currently well developed with the establishment of the Latrobe Youth Centre, Latrobe Swimming Pool, Sassafras Cricket Club and grounds, Latrobe Hockey and Softball Clubrooms and grounds, Latrobe Recreation Ground, Latrobe Tennis Club, Latrobe High School, St Patrick‟s Primary School and associated facilities and car parking.

Sykes Consulting recently consulted with a number of current and potential user groups of this area and will be returning to Latrobe later this month to facilitate a public forum to further discuss the opportunities for the development and utilisation of this area.

The objective of the engagement is to develop a plan that considers and addresses the social, economic and environmental issues associated with the area, ultimately providing guidance to Council and the community for future development and public use.

Should you wish to attend the public forum, please register with Council by phoning 6421 4650.

Bells Parade Rotunda Following on from the last newsletter, approval has now

been received from the Crown to proceed with the

construction of the heritage rotunda at Bells Parade,

Latrobe in readiness for use at the Henley-on-Mersey

Centenary next January 26.

The preparatory ground works will be commencing later

this month whilst the pre-fabricated structure is expected

to be swung and fixed into place before the end of the

year.

Port Sorell Caravan Park Toilets

The toilet/shower facility within the Port Sorell Caravan Park, along East Esplanade, Port Sorell is set to receive a major make-over.

The current facility has provided a service to the camping community for many years but is now not up to the standard and expectations of today‟s holiday maker.

At the end of this Summer‟s camping season, Council plan to remove the existing toilet block and replace it with a modern complex that takes advantage of water saving devices and adequately caters for the disabled.

The new building will include four male and four female shower/toilet cubicles as well as two public unisex toilets, one of these catering for disabled use. It will also incorporate improved camper laundry facilities.

Mersey River Anglers Following the delivery of Anglers Access projects on the

Meander, Leven, Macquarie, Huon and Lake Rivers, the

Inland Fisheries Services have approached Latrobe

Council to partner with them to source funding for such a

facility on the Mersey River.

Page 4: Tasmania Together 10 Year Review Latrobe Library Survey

The proposal seeks to provide access to a major river

fishery for anglers between Latrobe and Lake Parangana

and includes the installation of appropriate infrastructure.

Essential Link in Food Chain

Marsh Harriers are often mistaken for eagles when seen soaring over local

paddocks. They migrate north as far as Asia in the Winter, but time their return

here to the hatching of plover chicks.

The birds have long, featherless legs, which as their name suggests, allows them to wade through marshy ground, sourcing a rich diet of frogs, small snakes, ducklings and native hen chicks.

With many wetland areas being drained for farming, Harriers have adapted to nesting in poppy and pyrethrum crops and do good service eating snakes, rabbits, rats and mice. Some farmers still illegally shoot birds, but many now realise their value and mark out the nest sites so that they are protected from harvesting activities.

In high Summer, the nests get hot, and the older chicks get bored waiting for parents to bring back food, and may wander away. If you come across chicks on the roadside, please do not pick them up, but if safe to do so, herd them back behind the fence, where their parents will continue to feed them.

Harriers are an essential link in the food chain, but sadly, along with many other species, their numbers are in decline.

If you find any injured or orphaned wildlife, please phone Central North Wildlife Care and Rescue on 0409 978 064.

Defibrillator Availability

The Lions Club of Latrobe reminds residents of the defibrillator available at Ritchie‟s Supermarket in the case of an emergency.

Whilst its availability should not discourage potential heart attack victims from calling an Ambulance, it is a valuable first response option in such a situation.

A number of staff are trained in the use of the defibrillator and with Ritchie‟s Supermarket open seven days a week, it is highly accessible.

The ever popular Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings are now available throughout the community from the Shingle Shed, Morses‟ Butchery, Ritchie‟s Supermarket or from the roving cake salesmen Lions Fred and Brenda who you will catch outside the Latrobe Newsagency or Wells‟ from time to time.

Funds raised through the sale of the Christmas Cakes and

Puddings are used to assist many disabled, disadvantaged

and displaced persons.

PLEASE DON’T THROW THEM AWAY …

YOUR used stamps can help raise funds to purchase walking aids for children with Cerebral Palsy. Used Stamps may be left at Ritchie‟s Supermarket.

Used spectacles enable those less fortunate to see. Spectacles may be left at Coventry‟s Pharmacy or the Latrobe Medical Practice or Ritchie‟s Supermarket.

The Lions Club of Latrobe meets on the first and third Mondays of each month at the RSL, 6.30 for 7pm. For more information please contact Alan Walker, Brian Sullivan or any Lions member.

Caring for the Port Sorell Environment

Rubicon Coast and Landcare members have been doing some Spring planting with local native plants along the edge of the coast. Vegetating this area has three-fold benefits in that it acts as a wind break; helps stabilise the soil and prevents

erosion. Native plants also provide good habitats for native birds and animals.

When Freers Beach won the Tasmanian Clean Beach Award in 2007-8, the “Keep Australia Beautiful” judge commended the community of Port Sorell for keeping the natural vegetation along the coast.

Rubicon Coast and Landcare Inc are sensitive to the importance of sea views to residents and mainly plant small species in front of houses. A few Casuarinas are intermittently planted to gradually replace the existing trees that are growing old and will eventually die. Casuarinas go through a rather lumpy “teenage” phase before growing into tall elegant adults so please be patient if you have a teenager in front of your house as everyone‟s help is needed to make sure that the coastal vegetation is valued and kept safe.

You are welcome to join Rubicon Coast and Landcare Inc and help care for the beautiful environment of the Port Sorell area. Meetings are held at Camp Banksia on the second Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm whilst Working Bees are held on the Saturday morning that follows each meeting.

For more information, contact [email protected].

Latrobe Memorial Hall Façade Upgrade The renovation of the Latrobe Memorial Hall and

Performing Arts Centre is gradually coming together.

Earlier this year, Peter “Sid” Sidebottom MP, announced

that Council had been successful in receiving funding

through the Federal Regional and Local Community

Infrastructure Program to upgrade the foyer and toilets of

this centre. Those works will be commencing shortly

subject to a sufficient break in the bookings for the hall.

Latrobe Council is currently awaiting advice on funding

for its entry colonnade concept (above) which will see the

building transformed into a modern and inviting facility.

Understanding Parkinson’s

Parkinson‟s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that often impairs the sufferer's motor skills, speech, and other functions. This illness tends to gradually make its way into the lives of sufferers.

In an endeavor to break down the mystique of this illness and help families and friends cope when a loved one contracts this disease, the Lions Club of Latrobe has sourced a Parkinson‟s Information Kit. This kit can be accessed through the Latrobe Adult Day Care Centre at 7 Hamilton Street, Latrobe (behind the former church).

For more information contact Susan Hynes on 6426 2744.

Latrobe Art Exhibition and Sale

“The Year That Was” is the theme adopted for the 25th

Annual Latrobe Art Exhibition and Sale, which is now

open for artists to register their participation. There are many influences to our daily lives that affect the creation of art. This year‟s theme challenges you to pictorially depict what it is that has had an impact on you over the past year or maybe your “year that was” happened more than a year ago.

Was the milestone part of your personal life or a community crusade? Perhaps it was a world away. Maybe it wasn‟t just one highlight.

Vivid memories of a tragedy or triumph that had such an impact that you are reluctant to let the thought diminish as time marches on. Was it a person, place, animal or thing?

“The Year That Was” provides an opportunity for you to explore your passion - the possibilities are endless.

Whilst this theme has been adopted for the whole of the exhibition, the Open Section enables varied interpretation.

The traditional Tasmanian Alkaloids Poppy Industry Award has been expanded beyond poppies enabling artists the opportunity to interpret “The Year That Was … On The Farm”.

Likewise, the House of Anvers Photographic section provides scope to interpret “The Year That Was … At The Café”.

A variety of mediums may be used to create an original

two-dimensional artwork.

With over $3,000 in prize money and a great opportunity

to expose your talent, make sure that you pick up (from

the Latrobe Council office) or download an entry form

(www.latrobe.tas.gov.au) to ensure you meet all the

requirements.

Registrations must be lodged with Latrobe Council no

later than Monday, 13th December whilst artworks are

to be delivered to the Australian Axemans Hall of Fame

on Sunday, 16th January, 2011.

Betta Milk Container Demand

Once again, the challenge of the Betta Boat Race has been issued for the Henley-on-Mersey Centenary, which is to be held at Bells Parade, Latrobe on Australia Day, January 26.

Entrants are required to construct a boat, defined as “a vessel for transport by water, constructed to provide buoyancy by excluding water and shaped to give stability and permit propulsion”. This boat is to be primarily constructed from Betta Milk containers (refer to rules).

A Betta Boat entry this year

The boat must also be capable of carrying its team of three people or an individual.

Should sufficient entries be received, the committee reserves the right to add new categories.

Entrants will be required to sail (non-motorized) the boat in the quickest time along a set distance on Bells Creek at Henley-on-Mersey.

To ensure you pass scrutineering, it is essential that you grab an entry form from the Henley-on-Mersey Management Committee by phoning 6426 1442 or call into the Latrobe Council office. Alternatively, download one from www.latrobe.tas.gov.au

In the meantime, start collecting your Betta Milk containers so you are in with a chance to win some great prizes on Australia Day.

Spring Spruce Up To Signage

Members of the Latrobe Rotary Club have recently cleaned the road signs within the Latrobe township and invite shop owners to inspect their signs so that our town has a

fresh look for locals and visitors alike.

Seven Rotarians acted as judges at the recent University of Tasmanian Science Investigation Awards at the Burnie Campus, involving 180 entries and 350 students from throughout the North West area. The Latrobe Rotary Club sponsored First Prize of $300 for the Latrobe Municipality winners. This was won by Reuben McCormack and Alec Thomas for their experiment on global warming (the radial reflectiveness of a surface).

Reuben and Alec commented that their participation in this competition enabled them to “gain an interest and an invaluable learning experience in the science field”.

Generosity Continues

You may have seen a recent article in a local paper showing some smiling club members‟ faces while presenting a cheque of $5,000

on behalf of the Lions Club of Port Sorell. The donation will assist the purchase much

need equipment for the children‟s ward at the Mersey Community Hospital and was made from the Club‟s ongoing fundraising activities throughout the Port Sorell community. This project was an initiative of the Northern Radio Station Network and in total raised over $23,000 which was distributed to the hospitals. It just shows how generous individuals and businesses continue to be. The Port Sorell Lions Club is proud to support this project and continues to ensure community raised funds go into projects of this nature.

Members will be busy from here on in as they head into the “silly season”.

Later this month, members will be manning the gates for two days at the Devonport Show. The annual “Carols at Port Sorell” event will be held on Sunday, December 19th with the community barbecue held prior to the main event, so put this date in your diary.

As the weather warms up you may be undertaking that big spring clean! Don‟t forget the Port Sorell Lions Club operate a recycling shop in Hawk Hill Road where you can leave items of good condition for resale or, if you are looking for a bargain, it‟s worth a visit.

New members to the Lions Club of Port Sorell are most welcome. Should you wish to learn more about Lions and the Port Sorell Club, please contact the Membership Officer, Keith, on 0418 178 115.

Henley-on-Mersey Centenary

January 26, 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of Henley-on-Mersey at Bells Parade, Latrobe.

What started as a community picnic day has certainly evolved into one of the most quirky events in Tasmania on Australia Day.

The development of the event links to our Australian heritage and includes such activities as a Scarecrow making competition utilizing recycled materials; ferret racing, as well as a number of aquatic activities such as the Betta Boat Race, wooden boat display and canoe races. There is also the traditional wood chopping competition, sheaf tossing, egg throwing, spud picking, Latrobe Art Exhibition and Australia Day Awards presentations.

In recent times, the Management Committee, a collaboration between the Lions Club of Latrobe, Rotary Club of Latrobe and Latrobe Council, has expanded the festival to bring many other community organisations on board to present activities. Model car racing; veteran cars, cherry spitting, gum boot throwing as well as numerous food and refreshment sites continue to make Henley-on-Mersey more popular as the years go by.

So what are you doing this coming Australia Day? Why not join in the fun and have a go in some of the many competitions on offer at this great family day out. More details will be included on the back of the next newsletter.

Scarecrow Competition For All Ages

Scarecrow - a creation traditionally made in mannequin form and dressed in old clothes and placed in fields by farmers to discourage birds from disturbing and feeding on crops.

The Henley-on-Mersey Committee is challenging you to make your own, unique, life sized scarecrow from recycled materials in readiness for Australia Day and is offering prizes in the categories of scarecrows created by Under 12 year olds and those over 12 years of age.

There is no particular theme or style that must be followed. The scarecrow can be traditional or contemporary however it must be made from recycled items. It is a fun, school holiday activity that can be created by just the kids, as a family or even a business.

Entries will be judged on the use of recycled materials, the strength and durability of the scarecrow to the weather, originality of design, creativity and character.

There is a lot of enjoyment and love that can go into creating a scarecrow, especially if you are planning to keep it for your garden after the competition.

The hand-crafted, whimsical scarecrows will be displayed at Bells Parade during Henley-on-Mersey.

Entry forms with full details are available on Latrobe Council‟s website (www.latrobe.tas.gov.au) or by telephoning Mrs Kae Campbell on 6426 1442.

Workforce Participation Grants

To assist Tasmanian businesses deal with the challenge of skill shortages, the Tasmanian Government is providing $2.3 million in grants through its Workforce Participation Program.

Grants will be provided to organisations that provide employment for a person who has not been employed in the previous three months, and who faces a barrier that prevents them from working.

What is being offered?

There are two grant schemes under the Workforce Participation Program:

Grants for Employers

Grants of up to $7,000 per job are available to encourage employers to fill vacancies and satisfy demands for labour by employing Tasmanians that they usually do not consider.

Grants for Community Enterprise

Funding is available to create and facilitate employment opportunities through community enterprise for Tasmanians.

Funding will be calculated on $7,000 per job.

For more information about the program or if you have questions about the guidelines and/or want help in preparing your application, contact Business Point on 1800 440 026 or [email protected]

New Era for Disability Parking Permits

Tasmanians with disabilities who are travelling interstate or moving between states will find parking easier with the roll-out of a new Australian Disability Parking Permit.

The new permits are being rolled out nationally over the next four months with Tasmania being the first state in this process.

The common look and feel of the new permit will reduce confusion when permit holders move between jurisdictions, while the new security features will assist with enforcement and reduce improper use.

Disability Parking Permits are issued as a component of the Tasmanian Transport Access Scheme, an umbrella scheme that includes, for eligible members, parking permits, motor vehicle, driver licensing and MAIB concessions and concessions on taxi fares.

This scheme is administered by the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (Roads and Public Transport Division) who are contactable on 1300 851 225.

The Spin - Youth Art Competition.

Young people are invited to submit entries in The Spin, a youth art competition on gambling.

Artists may include video makers, visual artists, public speakers, dancers, mash up artists, script writers, MCs, DJs, in fact, all young people who like to express themselves creatively! Along with a Junior Section for 12-14 year olds, there is also a Senior Section for 15-18 year olds.

drumMUSTER Chemical Clean Program

One of the greatest problems facing users of crop production and animal health products is the disposal of empty chemical containers.

drumMUSTER is the National program that has been set up for the collection and recycling of cleaned eligible non-returnable crop production and on-farm animal health chemical containers.

drumMUSTER provides a defined route for chemical users to safely dispose of their used chemical containers. All you are required to do is clean your containers so they are free of any chemical residue then deliver them to one of over 700 receival sites across Australia. Your nearest site is located at the Spreyton Waste Transfer Station.

The National Farmers Federation (NFF), CropLife Australia, Animal Health Alliance (Australia) Ltd , VMDA and the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) have together developed the initiative, the Industry Waste Reduction Scheme (IWRS) as the solution to the safe collection and recycling of cleaned chemical containers and the collection of unwanted rural and agricultural and vet chemicals.

drumMUSTER is the single biggest environmental program ever undertaken jointly by farmers/end chemical users, Local Government and the Crop Production and Animal Health Industries.

drumMUSTER‟s belief is that the responsible use of chemicals, and waste management initiatives means a cleaner environment for the community as a whole and adds to Australia‟s clean and green image.

ChemClear is an ongoing national program for the collection and disposal of unwanted rural agricultural and vet chemicals.

Registrations are currently being taken to participate in the upcoming ChemClear collection (in December). All you need do is register at www.chemclear.com.au or telephone 1800 008 182 prior to Friday, 5 November.

ChemClear will collect (for free) chemical containers that are -

in their original container;

have not been mixed with any other product;

has a readable product label; and

are within two years of its expiry date.

Collection is available for chemicals that do not meet these requirements however a fee does apply.

ANZAC Day 2011 - A Review

The 25th April, 2011 marks the Centenary of ANZAC Day.

Given the additional significance of this occasion, the Department of Veterans‟ Affairs recently sought community feedback on how we should commemorate the ANZAC Centenary (submissions closed 17 September).

Whilst a National Commission is currently considering submissions, the planning for the ANZAC Centenary is focused on six planning principles –

Century of service

Community engagement

Infrastructure and capital works

Education, public awareness and community access

Commemorative services

International relations and cooperation

A recommendation to the government by the National Commission is anticipated early next year.

ANZAC Day next year also falls on Easter Monday. This is a rare occasion that also brings its own challenges.

Stay tuned for more information on these important occasions as they come to hand.

Carols in King

An extensive program is all in readiness for the community caroling in Kings Park, Latrobe.

For the past four years, volunteer elves have performed on stage with the Latrobe Federal Band. Students from kindergarten to Grade 10 are again invited to join in (Santa hats required) and will sing three well known Christmas Carols. There‟s no need to register, just turn up on the night.

The “Carols in King” will commence immediately following the Latrobe Lions Christmas Parade, at approximately 7.15 pm so bring along your blanket, candles and fine voices.

Port Sorell Lions Carols by Candlelight

The Port Sorell Lions Carols will be held on Sunday, 19th December in the Port Sorell Memorial Hall from 8pm.

As with past years, this will be preceded with a free sausage sizzle from 6.30pm so grab your candles, tune your voices and come join in the fun of this occasion.

Caroling in the Streets

Just prior to Christmas, the Latrobe Federal Band will be caroling throughout the streets of Latrobe and Port Sorell. The caroling is not only a way of spreading some Christmas cheer but also a part of their annual fundraising that assists with purchasing music and maintaining equipment.

Cycling and Athletics Carnival

The Latrobe Boxing Day Carnival featuring cycling, athletics and an exhibition wood chop will again be held on Sunday, 26th December, commencing at 10am.

The UCI Series, which enabled cycling participants the opportunity to gain points recognized worldwide, has been withdrawn from Latrobe and a number of other Carnivals this year as a result of their tracks not being regulated.

Latrobe Bicycle Race Club Secretary/Treasurer, Mr Dennis Chugg, said “the UCI Series required a lot of cycling heats and eliminations which drew out the program.

The positive from this Series withdrawal is that the program will revert back to a day of pacey, diverse and interesting competition in the three fields of sporting prowess - cycling, athletics and wood chopping - right through to 6pm.”

Sports Carnival Association of Tasmania cycling coordinator, Mr Rick Martin, advised the return of crowd favourite Belinda Goss along with last year‟s winner of the Latrobe Wheel, Jackson Law. Malaysians Azil Awang and Rizal Tizin are both returning with Rizal coming from winning a Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games. Triple World Junior Champion, Amy Cure, will also be competing.

World Champion Wood Chopper, Mr David Foster, advises that whilst there will not be a chopping competition there will be chopping exhibitions in the main arena as well as a few novelty events.

Registered Tasmanian Athletic League members are now able to register to participate in the carnival. Application can be made online at www.tal.org.au.

Tickets to the Latrobe Boxing Day Carnival can be pre-purchased online at www.tascarnivals.com or at the gate on the day.
