ay's qame Today's visitors to the Canniepairt are responsible for us dropping our only point to date away from home this season -a 1-1 draw at Glenesk Park in August. We held the whip hand in that game for long enough but the Pansies stuck to their task well and their efforts were rewarded with a point.

That form has deserted Violet a bit and they come to Fife today on the back of two successive three goal margin defeats. With this being one of only two league games scheduled for today (the other teams are on P.A . Cup business), both teams will see the game this afternoon as an opportunity to steal a march on their opponents. In our case nearer to the top of the division and in Violet's case, further away from the basement area and consoli _~~.ion of their mid table position.

As seEl'!lls to be the case most of these midweeks, several players were being treated fo~ lnjuries which curtailed the training activities of the individuals concerned. It's possible, then, that we'll see a shuffling of the pack to ensure that a fit Xl takes the field.

Violet have a wealth of experience in their ranks with combatants such as Phil Smith, Rertie Traynor, Rrian Peacock, Grant Nisbet and George Sinclair from which to select . Not to mention big Eric Manderson who, if he plays, vill be turning out for the third different side against Tayport this season. His final appearance for Harp saw him run a gauntlet of Tayport fans on his way to the dressing rooms after the referee had given him the red card. The following week Eric turned up playing for Dundee Ribs against Tayport Amateurs and scoring a couple of goals into the bargain.

r~st week's defeat from North End was only the Pansies' second league defeat in seven games which includes collecting points from Jeanfield and Lochee United. Fraser Mann 'lost his first goal in five games last week and if he can keep a clean sheet against Violet he'll be the first keeper to achieve that distinction in a league game against the Violet this season

GARY AND STEVE IN TAYSIDE POOL FOR FORFAR TOMORROW

Tayport's Gary Maher and Steven Stewart have been selected to represent the Tayside Region tomorrow afternoon at Strathmore Park in Forfar against the North Region in an Under 23 match.

T.ochee United's current good form has been recognised by the selection of no fewer than 5 of their players. Harry Gray of St Joseph's is out with a shoulder injury and his place has been taken by Scott Glass of Dovnfield. The squad is: F.Fitzpatrick, G.Milne, P.Goodman, ~.Henry, n.Fisher and R.Graham (all Lochee United); M.Hutton, A,Ramsay (Carnoustie); R.Massie(Montrose); a.Ferrie, S.Glass (Dovnfi.eld); I.Greig (Arbroath SC), S . Peters (Forfar W.F..) and M.Feeney (North End). Team Boss is Dave Baikie.

CJ'otfay 's Visitors Thanks to their unique achievement in 1929, Dundee Violet have been arguably the best known of the local Junior teams throughout the years. Th•t Scottish Cup success is in the dim and distant past however and recent times have been fairly lean.

Things a r e changing at Glenesk, though, Rnd st r ides have been made on and off the field to arrest a decline in fortunes. The ground has had a facelift and an enthusiastic young management duo of Phil Smith and George Sinclair have shaken up things on the field.

!n goal this afternoon will be the vastly experienced figure of IAN BOARDLEY who has seen service with Forfar Athletic in the Seniors and several Junior sides, the most recent of which was North End. PHIL SMIIB needs no introduction to the locals. Moved from the Canniepairt 12 years ago and enjoyed a len\Jthy and illustrious career at Forfar Athletic. Had short spells at East Fife and St Joseph's before joining up at Violet. ERNIE SCRIM;EOUR. Stalwart defender with an attacking urge which belies his veteran status. ANDY l.ORNIE. Fullback who has been three seasons at the club. 'T'he young defender had trials at Aston Villa and Liverpool as a schoolboy . WILLIE CRAIG defender signed from second division Elmwood this season. Another defender in his first season at Glenesk is STEPHEN ROBB, hrother of Ronnie, a weel kent face here at the Canniepairt. Steve played his football with Su:,day side Lochill and was persuaded to go Junior when that side disbanded. Also from that club came STEWART MACKINTOSH, a young midfielder who is just finding his feet with the Juniors although he is working hard at his game.

BERTIE TRAYNOR. 'T'he big midfielder needs no introduction. Reen with several clubs in the Region, I'lOSt recently with Arbroath SC. Gets his fair share of goals

Three ex-Downfield rren in the squad must have been delighted with Violet's early season win over the Spiders are STEVIE MACKINTOSH,who was also with North End, GRAN!' NISBET and BRIAN PEACOCK. Nizzy played a major role in many of the Spiders' triumphs during the last ten years but wasn't holding down a regular place last season and was allowed to leave. Rrian was a target for Tayport at one time but left Downfield Parle to join St Joseph's but was transferred to Violet this season.

ERIC Ml\NDERSON. Striker who has been around the Tayside Juniors and although not in the first flush of youth, still comnands attention from defenders. Not

"the rrost popular of players as far as the Port Support are concerned!

MARK SMI'lli. Striker or right fullback. 'l'he club's top scorer last season. NORRIE REILLY. Signed from Kingsway Athletic at the end of last season. Dangerous striker who never allows a defence to settle. Has been a good find for the club. DEREK GIBB. Was on the mark last Saturday against North End. 'l'he 18 year old from the Dee Club is a bit light-weight at t he in::xnent but the Glenes k fans reckon that he has a promising future in the game. Rack in action is central defender KEVIN TORRANCE who spent a bit of time working in England. Solid tackler who has given service to Forfar west End and North End.

FRANKIE BRADY. F.xperienced midfield terrier who is a valuable member of the pool RS is OOBBY CARLIN, a fellow midfielder who has been out with a back injury since last season. Back in training, t.hough, but still with a bit to go. Player coach GEORGE SINCLAIR is quite a character. Nicknamed 'The Beast', and once described in a programne as having 'an aggressive nature which was to

degenerate into a horrendous reign of terror as the season progressed ' [ I think

they were joking - at least I hope they were!]

Another Tayport -~• man go·es. senior

By AMATEUR Another Tayport player, the second in as' many

. weeks, has joined the senior ranks. Defender Philip Smith, who had played trials for both Brech in City and Dundee, signed for Forfar Athletic on Monday evening.

Both Smith and Gus Malone, who joined Brechin last week, played their paq in Tayport's first ever Midlands champion ship win last season and the Fife club will find it hard to replace them.

Favourites for this year's title, Timex, have also had a player move to the seniors. Midfielder Charlie Adam · played a succe ss ful trial with Montrose on Saturday a{lainst Albion Rovers and has since put pen to paper for the Links Park club.

St James scored a notable Scottish ,Cup victory last week when they ousted crack Edinburgh side Muirhouse Violet from the competition.

<The (Ba~r's <Bit Dundee Violet provide our league opposition today, !'d like to extend a warm welcome to both their players and officials,

Since the last issue of the Port Prog we've had two victories, ~he 4-0 2nd round Scottish Cup win over Balbeggie wasn't the greatest of spectacles, the first half especially, However with the lack of personnel and so many positional changes, It took time for us to really settle and brea ·Jc them down ,- Rut once the first goal went in, there was never a doubt in my mind over the outcome.

~he win has given us a third round home draw against the Central Region's Port Glasgow. llnfortunately we'll only have one ~hance, which is today, to have a look at them, hut I suppose 1t's the same for them.

last week's league game at Perth saw us come home with a 2-1 win and two points . On paper it looks a close encounter but, when you look at the match statistics, we really should have returned with a handsome scoreline.

~he first half saw us totally dominate, play very well and score two goals and, with a bit of luck, we could have gone in at half-time four or five ahead.

The second half really continued as the first, ~issing a series of chances and some good goalkeeping kept the score the same. I said to our players at the interval , although we're 2-0 up, l couldn't see Jeanfield lying down and that was the case. Although they gave us numerous chances, their effort couldn't be faulted and , to me , that reflects the respect that every side we encounter shows Tayport.

J.•m sure today's game will be no different. Our league form to date has seen us drop only two points . I don't really need to remind our players of the fact that one of them was against Dundee Violet. A victory - no more, no less - will do me. Let's put pressure on our rivals with a winning performance today.

Support The Port, Dave Baikie.

OVD SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP

TWO PORTS AND AN OVD!

The draw for the 3rd round of the OVD Scott is h J uni or Cup sees us break new ground when we face Port Glas go w Jun io rs from the Central League here on the Canniepairt next Saturda y .

Port Glasgow play in the same division as Forth, the Reebok first division, and, although they went clovn 0- 3 at hc me t o Neilston last week, their two results prior to th a t game were impressive, a 5-0 OVD win over Bonnybriclge and a 3-1 win over Vale of Leven who ran St Joseph's close in the last r ound .

The relatively short time bet ween the draw and the ties means that the respective clubs have little opportunity to clo much spying but I suppose that we can expect some west coast accents here today.

r.up holders Largs Thistle went out to Bonnyrigg Rose in a replay last Saturday but their opponents in last year's Ibrox final, Glenafton, look to have a comfortable passage to round 4 with a home tie against Aberdeen East Encl.

T.ochee United, r.urrently on a hot streak, have the shortest of trips when they go across the city to meet Broughty Athletic, replay winners over Buchanhaven Hearts in Peterhead last week.

Kinnoull's reward for a super result in their replay at Newtongrange Star is an eminently winnable tie at home to Aberdeen's Lewis United .

nownfielcl travel to meet Jeanfielcl's conquerors, St oneyburn, in West Lothian while St Joseph's are also on the road with a · ttip to Bellshill, a side from the th i rd of the three Central Divisions . .

Rankfoot's reward for a stunning 3rd round win at Thornton is a home tie against Aberdeen Lads Club but neighbours Scone haven't been quite as fortunate - they travel to Barrheacl to meet the redoubtable Arthurlie side.

r.arnoustie Panmure won't have to look out the roadmaps . ~hey travel into Fife to meet Lochore Welfare while our Fife neighbours St Andrews United won't be too unhappy about ,·· ~ having to travel to meet Kirkintilloch Rob Roy who play in the same division as Bellshill .

When the name came out of the hat_ last Sunday at Bo'ness, three ties set the crowd buz z in g , Auchinleck v Cumnock , T.inlithgow Rose v Bo'ness and Shotts v Shettleston . r.umnock may be in the second division these clays but there's little doubt that South Ayrshire will be talking about little else these next seven days.

~he remaining ties are: - Haddi ngton v Blantyre Vies .: l nssi eroouth v 'l'ra11ent; Glenrothes v Maryhi 11; raul clhouse? Uni t, •cl v Banks , •' Dee ; North F.ncl v Benb.;ro; 11unclonalcl v ,.am?lon; Pollok v Turriff; 1:il syth v Bon Acco.rcl; nonnyri ,m v KC?lty; Coltness or Brechin Vks v Ashfield; 111·.1 o ' Beath v l,1ng.• icle ; ,Tohnsto:·,e Burgh v Clacl<r.lannan or Yoker; Tlei th v Ha ll Russe11 Utcl; Arniston v l.oc~Jelly; St onehouse v Whi tburn; Arrnacla,e v Bath<Jat e; Greenock v I11ver1.rie Loco; Sunnybank v Dalry ,;r Renfr ew; J.ar khall v Kilwinning Rangers.

1 Sniffing )I6out With f]Ji,e Snout We told you in the last Port Prog that ex Forfar, Raith & Kirrie defender Alex Brash was appealing against his six month ban imposed while being sent off playing for NCR Amateurs. Things didn't turn out too well for Alex. The appeal was thrown out and into the bargain he received an extra six months, making a year's suspension in total, and NCR were fined £200 as well as losing their appeal fee .

INTERESTING stastistic from last Saturday's game at Jeanfield. According to our statistician there was not one offside decision in the entire game. r.an't happen too often.

ACROSS on the East Common this afternoon Tayport Amateurs reach a notable milestone. Their Scottish Amateur Cup 3rd round tie against Edinburgh Albion is the club's 100th in the competition. And,to add a piece of useless information Tayport have failed to find the back of their opponents' net in only eight of these ties.

WHEN OVD Scottish Junior Cup time comes along, Jt's guaranteed that one club will consistently be misnamed. How often have you seen Craigmark Burntonians described as Bruntonians?

THOSE with a taste for OVD rum could do worse than keep in with Tayport treasurer Ross Macmillan and ex committee man Andy Robertson. At lastSunday's Scottish Junior Cup draw at Bo'ness, they each won a bottle of the sponsor's product in the raffle.

THE Absolute Game, a fanzine, describing a Lochee Harp trip up north to play a Scottish Junior Cup tie went a bundle on (the then) Harp striker, Violet's player/coach George Sinclair. A bit of a cult figure in the fanzine, George was nicknamed'The Beast' and the following tale was related - • • . . The beast became irritable during the long bus journey. On arrival he announced that he was hungry, causing several committeemen to flee fearing cannibalism. Making do with a handful of pies The Beast belched his way on to the park .•. " This tale is definitely taking a bit of living down, George!.

THE familiar booming roar has been missing from the Tayport matches recently. The reason is that its owner is out of the country. Out of the continent in fact. Actually he couldn't really be much further away. The 'he' is Adam Williamson who went off ·to Australia to play the pipes at a wedding. He's moved on since, his latest postcard being sent from Tasmania.

Sniffing }l6out With <The Snout DOWNFIELD'S Ronnie Fraser will miss out on his side's OVD Cuptie at Stoneyburn - and a lot more games as well. He has been suspended by the Amateur F.A. for six months for an offence committed vhilst playing with amateur side SSP&P earlier in the season.

TAYSIDE JFA Match Secretary Jock Myles has been appointed as an official observer at one of the top matches of the 3rd round of the OVD Cup, Shotts v Shettleston.

THE Tayport Supporters' Club bus driver acted above and beyond the call of duty in Perth last week. Whilst some of the auld yins were suppin ·g "their after match pints in the Jeanfield Swifts Social Club after the match, the driver took his bus round to McDonald's to let the youngsters on the bu~ get a Big Mac. Nice one, Jan.

EVERYBODY at the Canniepairt wishes club member and season ticket holder Joe Paterson a speedy recovery from injuries which he received in a fall recently. ~he fall left Joe paralysed and he is currently in the spinal unit at the Southern General in Glasgow.

THE club's thanks go to the management of TAYPORT PRINTERS who have made their recently re-surfaced car park adjacent to the Canniepairt available for parking on match days and training nights.

REFEREE for next week's Scottish Cup game against Port Glasgow is Ian Roy from Glenrothes.

..:..,

Port Supporters will remember Andy Cargill, who scored Dundee's second goal against Stranraer in midweek, as the same player whom Downfield acquired on loan from Dundee United when we met the Spiders in that epic three game OVD quarter final in 1992.
