Welcome to Turku – hub of Baltic Sea cooperation!

Turku is very proud to host this year’s most important Baltic Sea events and welcome you to our city, a hub for Baltic Sea coopera-tion. During the Turku Baltic Sea Days 2014 all the major Baltic Sea discussion forums will be gathered together for the first time, with events being held including the 16th Baltic Development Forum Summit and the 5th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, as well as the XII Baltic Sea NGO Forum. In addition to these large-scale conferences, a number of other seminars and conferences are also being held in Turku, such as the Baltic Sea Forum and the Baltic Sea Health Summit. During the Turku Baltic Sea Days the city will also organize numerous maritime events open to the public.

We sincerely hope that regional cooperation in the “Top of Eu-rope” will get a real boost from the discussions in Turku, and lead to joint action. Even in difficult times, we must ensure that re-gional dialogue and practical work for shared goals will continue. Enjoy your stay and all that my home city can offer!

Aleksi RandellMayor, City of Turku Chairman of the Board, Centrum Balticum Foundation

Together for a clean, safe and smart Baltic Sea

It is my great pleasure to address the participants of the Turku Baltic Sea Days and wish you lively discussions, intense network-ing and inspiration for future cooperation.

The Finnish Presidency in the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) supports in many ways the events, although the Baltic Sea Summit could not take place as planned due to the present politi-cal situation in Europe. During the Presidency Finland has focused on maritime policy, civil security and people-to-people coopera-tion. Increased coherence and synergies between different actors in the region, as well as concrete projects have hopefully contributed to our common goal of a clean, safe and smart Baltic Sea.

Erkki Tuomioja Minister of Foreign Affairs Finland

Baltic Sea Region – why now we must work still better together

I would like to thank the City of Turku for hosting the 5th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The Turku region is a model region, building a strong future in line with the key objectives of the Strategy: saving the sea, connecting the region and increasing prosperity. I warmly welcome all the participants of the Baltic Sea Days to this important week long gathering on the shores of the Baltic Sea. This year the Annual Forum of the EUSBSR comes at an important moment. Only days before we have published a Report on the governance of macro-regional strategies. We are also at the start of a new programming period offering new opportunities to plan together and mobilising towards shared objectives. I know that implementing the Strategy sometimes means taking some difficult political decisions. We need to ensure the right structures are in place in each participating state and the European level. Governance is not an abstract issue: our proposals are about getting things done, and obtaining the best results for the region. We need everyone to play their part. I look forward to seeing you at the Forum, and hope you will join in very actively.

Johannes Hahn Member of the European Commission

Growing together around the Baltic Sea

We are indeed very pleased to have the 16th BDF Summit in the City of Turku and to be part of the Turku Baltic Sea Days 2014. With its central location by the Baltic Sea and as a historic center for culture and education in the region, the City of Turku is an excellent location for this year´s BDF Summit. Under the heading “growing together”, this year´s summit will focus on how to develop further the Baltic Sea Region as one of the most competitive regions in the world using the strong position in business we have built for decades and centuries.

I am confident that the Turku Baltic Sea Days 2014 will be an impor-tant step forward in our common effort to expand regional collabora-tion around the Baltic Sea.

Lene Espersen Chairman of Baltic Development Forum

Growth Zone Creates SuccessThe northern growth zone is the most important development project in the north that ties the cities, municipalities, companies and higher education institutions in the Baltic Sea region together. The growth zone extends from Oslo, via Stockholm, Turku and Helsinki, to St Petersburg and challenges actors to utilise investments and productise new innovative, ecological and smart business operations. The City of Turku wishes to contribute to the development of a united economic region, where trade, tourism and industries can find new potential and competitiveness through the development of logistical connections and networks.

New Growth from the Sea – Blue GrowthWorld-class expertise in the marine industry is based on a strong industrial foundation and history. The industry’s future will be created via new technological, production related and business solutions. The Turku region is the strongest centre of the Finnish maritime cluster and marine industry, when it comes to production, and a centre for maritime expertise and innovation activities. The shipbuilding industry is particularly strong in Turku, and the new business segments – the offshore industry and the marine industry in the arctic region – are also growing.

Health as a GoalFinland is one of the best in the world when it comes to research and development work in the bio sector, whilst the Finnish bio sector cluster BioTurku® is at the national forefront in the industry. Approximately one half of Finland’s pharmaceutical and diagnostics industry operates in Turku, and almost one half of the Finnish pharmaceutical industry’s sales are generated by the companies in the region. BioTurku comprises over a hundred actors, who form a single chain, ranging from education and research to production. Numerous internationally known life science products are created and manufactured in the Turku region.

During the first week of June 2014, the City of Turku hosts major maritime, business and cultural events. The joint 16th Baltic Development Forum Summit and the 5th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, the XII Baltic Sea NGO Forum, and many other events will bring the Baltic Sea region’s experts, decision-makers, and political and business leaders together. Welcome to Turku!

Turku promotes three key areas, in particular, in all operations.

10

Page 11: TBSD 2014 Programme

Centrum Balticum is a prominent voice for the whole Baltic Sea region. It is an independent expert between research and decision-making, and Finland’s leading centre of Baltic Sea region affairs. It acts as an information unit and coordi-nates a network of researchers and experts. In co-operation with cities and universities, Centrum Balticum generates new ideas for policy-making, facilitates best practice sharing and sets public debate in motion.

Centrum Balticum maintains a web portal and databank called Domus Baltica in order to help the dissemination of information related to Baltic Sea region. It also publishes a Baltic Sea Region Policy Briefing series for international experts and a weekly column called Pulloposti in Finnish. Currently, several thousand Finns interested in the Baltic Sea region affairs receive this weekly column written by the top Finnish professionals in their fields.

Centrum Balticum participates in international projects as a coordinator, a disseminator of infor-mation and an event organiser. The Protection Fund for the Archipelago Sea acts as a part of the Centrum Balticum Foundation and finances con-crete water conservation projects in the Finnish Archipelago Sea and its catchment area. Centrum Balticum also promotes practical cooperation across the Baltic Sea region with an innovative, bottom-up collaboration concept called the Turku Process.

Centrum Balticum organises annually the Baltic Sea Forum, which gathers hundreds of Finland’s leading experts to Turku to discuss topical issues related to the Baltic Sea region. In 2014 the Forum focuses on regional strategies: the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, the Arctic and the North West Russian strategies. The aim of the forum is to promote effective dialogue between the neighbouring regions. In November Centrum Balticum will host for the second time a Forum for the Finnish researchers of the Baltic Sea region.

In addition to these events, Centrum Balticum organises a variety of smaller events, such as luncheon seminars with the ambassadors of the Baltic Sea region states.

Linnankatu 60, 20100 Turku• June 2 at 11.30 Market Square

The main concert takes place at the Sigyn Hall on Sunday June 1 at 16. Another concert will take place at the Market Square on Monday June 2 at 11.30, in collaboration with local musicians.

Fiulbaltica (derived from “fiuli”, fiddle in Kaustinen dialect, and Baltic Sea) has invited children and youngsters, along with their teach-ers, from seven Baltic countries to play together with Kaustinen’s Näppärit and the conductor Mauno Järvelä. The concert program consists of folk music from all the participating countries. On the Sigyn Hall stage a total of 200 musicians will play violin, accordion, and bass, among other instruments. Baltic Sea Jazz Orchestra assembles top musicians from the Baltic Region June 1 –3 Forum Marinum Maritime Centre, Linnankatu 72, 20100 Turku River Cruiser Jakke

The Baltic Sea Jazz Orchestra is to come together especially for the Turku Baltic Sea Days 2014, and consists of some of the top musicians of the Baltic Sea region. The Jazz association Flame Jazz, based in Turku since the European Capital of Culture year 2011, has put together an orchestra with musicians from three European Capitals of Culture: Turku, and the two present capitals Umeå and Riga.

The music of the Baltic Sea Jazz Orchestra is energetic jazz music arranged for three brass in-struments and a rhythm section of four. Perform-ances at the Turku Baltic Sea Days will consist of compositions and arrangements with Baltic Sea theme in particular, which have been composed by two jazz musicians from Turku: Severi Pyysalo (vibraphone) and Jussi Fredriksson (drums), who will also be playing in the orchestra. The music combines big band elements in a creative way with the supple, improvisatory expression of a small band.

In addition to Pyysalo and Fredriksson, the Baltic Sea Jazz Orchestra consists of Teemu Åkerblom (bass) from Turku, Peter Holmqvist (quitar) and Andreas Gidlund (saxophone) from Umeå, as well as Dāvis Jurka (saxophone) and Konstantin Jemeljanovs (trumpet) from Riga. The Baltic Sea Jazz Orchestra is a breath of fresh air, as well as being a great example of fruitful cultural coopera-tion in the Baltic Sea Region – this time through high-quality jazz music.

SYMBIOSIS A new landmark sculpture by Stefan Lindfors for Saving the SeaUnveiling of Symbiosis sculpture June 3, at 19.30Forum Marinum Maritime Centre, Linnankatu 72, 20100 Turku

Turku is at the crossroads of the Baltic Sea and is keen to ensure that future generations can enjoy it cleaner than today. A new – and very visible – testimony of this commitment will be the Sym-biosis sculpture by the internationally renowned designer Stefan Lindfors, whose masterpiece will be unveiled in his former home town during the Turku Baltic Sea Days, on 3 June 2014 at 19.30 in front of the Forum Marinum Maritime Museum.

The sculpture, which will later be moved to its final site on the other side of the Aura river where it meets the Baltic Sea, will be a very visible landmark. Made out of steel plates, it measures 8x4.5x2.5 meters and will become familiar also to millions of ferry passengers coming to or travel-ling from the Turku harbour. Symbiosis is not only an artistic masterpiece but has also a mobilizing function – to collect funds to projects supporting the EUSBSR objective “Save the Sea” and especially the Archipelago Sea in front of Turku, which many consider to be the finest archipelago in the world. Individuals and organisations can demonstrate their commitment to the sea by buying a plate carrying their own name – which will be attached to the sculpture – and the funds will be used to fund concrete water

protection projects. It is expected to bring at least 250 000 euros through the Protection Fund for the Archipelago Sea, part of the Centrum Balti-cum Foundation.

Actions supportive of the objective “Save the Sea” enjoy broad support among inhabitants in Turku and all Finland. The “Archipelago Square” in front of Forum Marinum, with some 4500 name plates bought by citizens in 2011, proves this. Symbiosis will be a new testimony of this will.
