FOREWORDNow in its third year, CultureTECH has become Northern Ireland’s biggest and most exciting festival of creative innovation – covering everything from music to video games, animation to software and visual arts to TV production.

Across one crazy week from September 15th to 21st, around 40,000 people will play games, listen to music, visit galleries, go to seminars, watch films and generally have a great time.

And this year we have some amazing highlights including a huge Minecraft tournament, outdoor video dome, the Ministry of Science stage show, launch of the NW Regional Science Park, Culture Night Derry and a giant fruit orchestra.

GREENPOWER ELECTRIC CARS | Saturday & Sunday | Guildhall SquareLocal teams of school pupils will be demonstrating their design and engineering skills by conducting a live build of an IET Formula 24 electric car, and demonstrating their driving skills in an IET Formula Goblin electric car – all hosted by the Greenpower Education Trust.

5. CULTURETECH SKATE JAM | Saturday | 2pm – 6pm | Rosy Skatepark | Pennyburn.Q&D host a skatejam with prizes, music from Queen & Disco and free-to-play video games. 6. CULTURETECH VIDEO DOMEFriday – Sunday | Guildhall Square

A huge new attraction for this year’s festival, the CultureTECH video dome is a unique and immersive audio visual experience unlike any other, combining staggering 360° visuals with genre-bending musical performances - all housed in an 11 meter high-definition video dome which will invade Guildhall Square for CultureTECH. This unique series of performances will include truly amazing live evening music events from artists including Boxcutter, UNKNWN, Contour and SlowPlaceLikeHome alongside spectacular daytime full dome video shows suitable for audiences of all ages, including DJ Food’s “The Search Engine” and a 45 min audio-visual show set to Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”.

A performance event showcasing the results of a creative arts lab week in August where young artists explore the connections between music, poetry and film and between live and digital performance. The event will include the world premieres of several short new works mixing live instrumental music with poetry, film and digital arts. During Culture Night on Friday 19th September between 6-9pm the lab will be holding open rehearsals in Echo Echo Dance Studio - feel free to pop in. 7. Twenty winners of the Honeycomb Creative Buzz Award take part in a four-day intensive mentoring and networking experience to kickstart their digital careers.

2. CODING GRACE: INTRODUCTION TO PYTHON | Saturday | 1pm – 3.30pm | FoylesideIn this interactive, female-friendly workshop you’ll learn the basics of Python by creating a text- based game. You DO NOT need to have any prior experience of writing code but you do need to register in advance and bring your laptop.

3. 48HR MUSIC BOOTCAMP | Thursday | Friday | The Nerve Centre The Nerve Centre, Honeycomb – Creative Works and Generator NI present the 48HR Music Bootcamp - From fledgling song concept to complete release-ready track in 48 action-packed hours. Participants will experience the entire process of two artists (Rachel Sermanni and RAMS’ Pocket Radio) creating a song together and bringing it into the public domain. Get involved in masterclasses in video production, recording and mixing, digital marketing, song writing, photography, and music documentary making. Mentors include Paul Steel (Mika/Girls Aloud co- writer), Darren Lee (Maverick Renegade Productions), Smalltown America, Bandwidth Films and Carrie Davenport. Transport to all locations and daily meals will be provided.

DIGITAL ARTS SEMINAR | Friday | 2pm – 430pm | Venue TBCDigital technology is changing the performing arts - from how artists engage with audiences to how technology can empower the live experience. This seminar will explore case studies of digital performing arts in action featuring contributions from Sarah Ellis (Royal Shakespeare Company), members of Derry’s AnNua, director Paula Simms (Hope Street Theatre, Walk the Plank), composer and multi-media producer Patrick Dineen and dancer and filmmaker Sarah Black.

BECOMING MARTIAN | Tuesday | 7.30pm – 9.30pm | Craft VillageJoin Australian physicist, comedian & astronaut candidate Josh Richards on an humorous and informative journey to the red planet, looking at how colonising Mars will change humans in body, mind and soul. This event is free but a £5 donation to Children in Crossfire would be very welcome.

This informal evening reception will see the launch of the Captivate award and call for projects with funding requirements of up to £15,000.

IN THE COMMUNITYOver 1,000 local people will take part in an enormous digital skills project, as part of the GO ON NI campaign. Derry-Londonderry will also play host to an NI-wide digital skills conference, the NW’s largest jobs fair and a series of community events throughout the week.

1. 1,000 DIGITAL CHAMPIONS | Throughout the week | Various Locations Working in partnership with Derry City Council, we’re recruiting 1,000 Digital Champions to make a real difference in the lives of local people. Over 345,000 adults in Northern Ireland lack basic online skills - that means no emails to friends and family, no social media and no applying for jobs, booking tickets, or accessing government services. We’re going to do something about that.As part of this year’s CultureTECH Festival, we’re recruiting 1,000 digital champions – through a series of 50 workshops during the week of the festival - who want to share their skills and help get more people active - and confident - online. Ministry of Science Live is about to explode onto a stage near you soon! Ministry of Science Live is not your ordinary science show – it comes with a bang. It comes with a whoosh. But most of all it comes with a Hovercraft built on stage.

From liquid nitrogen frozen flowers to hydrogen bottle rockets fired right at you the show will take you on a journey using demonstrations and a few loud bangs to lead the way. From the creative team behind Brainiac Live, Guinness World Records Officially Amazing Science Live and a whole load of other educational shows with an anarchic twist – Ministry of Science Live is not to be missed.

1. MINECRAFT EDU The team from Minecraft Edu (Finland) will host workshops and training events in schools across the city. This programme is supported by Seagate and Arts & Business NI. 2. GUIDING YOUR WAY Guiding Your Way is a 3D Show run by the Northern Ireland Science Office, promoting World Space Week.

3. WOMEN WHO CODEWomen Who Code will host a workshop for young female coders at St Cecilia’s College. 4. HONEYCOMB CAREERS ROADSHOW A week-long roadshow of creative careers, visiting 5 schools across the city and working with over 1,000 students, helping them to imagine careers of the future.

5. VERBAL JOURNALISM MASTERCLASS A 2 day masterclass with professional journalists from the Irish Times, BBC and New York Times before venturing forth as mobile journalists to cover the excitement of the festival.

6. BBC SCHOOL REPORT The BBC will be bringing their School Report project to the city, working with both teachers and young people to give them an insight into the workings of the media.

Getting Here

Derry-Londonderry is the main city in the North-West of Ireland located about 70 miles from Belfast and 3 hours drive from Dublin.

By Air

There are regular flights directly into City of Derry Airport from London Stansted, Glasgow, Birmingham and Liverpool. Taxis are available from outside the arrivals area and typically cost around £12 into the city centre.

Belfast International Airport (1hr 15mins) and George Best Belfast City Airport (1hr 45mins) have dozens of flights daily to/from the UK and continental Europe as well as daily flights to/from Newark International. Dublin International Airport is around 3 hours from Derry.

By Bus | Rail

Buses run from Belfast to Derry-Londonderry roughly every 30mins from 630am - midnight. The journey takes about 1hr 45mins. The train journey takes longer but it’s a beautiful trip. Derry is a very walkable city and all the main festival venues are within just a few minutes of each other on foot.
