It has been a busy and fruitful autumn for Pavilion
Dance South West (PDSW), as we launched our
new name, brand and website. Thank you to
everyone who has accompanied us on this journey
and a warm welcome to all those just joining us.
Our autumn season was packed full of
performances, screenings and opportunities to take
part. We are especially proud of the success story
of Dracula by Mark Bruce, a Dream Artist at PDSW.
Dracula, which has received rave reviews in the
national press, has been hailed as “the best work of
his career”. It was also very exciting to work towards
the launch of “DanceTag”, our very own new dance
game app for smartphone users – a great way to
connect people through dance (p. 31).
This spring we continue our “Thursday Night is
Dance Night” programme (p. 5–13) with a new line-
up of exciting dance and movement performances
by a variety of artists, among them another one of
our Dream Artists, Karla Shacklock Company (p. 9).
Don’t forget that we are still running our fantastic
“Golden Ticket” offer: For only £50 you can see all
eight performances for an individual ticket price
of just £6.25 – where else can you see such a
wonderful selection of dance for such a great price?
In our “PDSW Cinema” programme (p. 20–21) we
continue to show a mixture of award-winning new
releases and some much-loved classics, all with
a link to our on-stage programme. We are also
delighted to present three more “Bolshoi Live”
ballet satellite screenings (p. 18–19), including
Balanchine’s masterpiece, Jewels.
We will also be hosts to the “Black Dance Archives”
touring exhibition and are proud to be their only
stopover in the South West (p. 27).
All this and so much more! We offer opportunities
for professional development in Bournemouth and
across the region (p. 22, 28–29), a careers platform
for years 10 to 13 (p. 24), two youth dance platforms
(p. 23), and we will be running a day of workshops and
events on “World Parkinson’s Day” on 12 April (p. 30).
Of course we also continue our tried and tested
programme of 40 regular dance and movement
classes (p. 25), and continue to develop our two
performance companies, Coevo and 2BU (p. 26).
So, let us put a spring in your step this season!

“Thursday Night is Dance Night” is the title of our regular live performance programme.
On eight nights between 6 February and 27 March we present work that we think has
the potential to entertain, excite, move and occasionally challenge you. We want to share
this work with you because we believe in it, and because we want to bring talented artists
with exciting, creative and fresh approaches to dance and movement to Bournemouth.
We invite you to tell us what you think – and maybe to challenge us back! – in our regular
post-show chats with the artists. But if you don’t feel like talking, it’s also fine just to listen
to the conversation. In any case it’s a chance to have a drink with the very same people you have just seen
performing their hearts out on stage.
Spread the word and join the conversation:

PERFORMANCE SEASON
THURSDAY NIGHT IS DANCE NIGHT
THE ENGLISH CHANNELBY LIZ AGGISS
THU FEB 06
7.30pm
Tickets: £5/£8/£10/£50
(Details page 5)
After 60 years, Liz Aggiss finally gives herself
permission to do what she damn well pleases.
Better late than never! She’s reached an age
where doing the right thing is optional. Should
she please you, or should she please herself?
The English Channel is the story of a career
forged in the heady waters of performance
art and dance film. It vividly depicts Liz Aggiss
resuscitating herself back into the on-stage
limelight. In the process, she becomes an
unwitting channel for wilful women and
forgotten archives; a conduit for hidden
histories and buried truths. She is your
cunning connection to “the other side”; a witty
commentator on life and death; on the pain,
pleasure and paradox of the stage. The show
is framed by contemporary and archive film.
The specially composed music score includes
some knock-out musical numbers.
A maverick and anarchic artist, Liz Aggiss
has been a Guerrilla Dancer, Diva, Wild
Wiggler, Grotesque Dancer, Trout, Martyr
and a Professor. She has for the past 35 years
been redefining her own brand of British
contemporary dance.

To say that Liz is unafraid would be an understatement.

OURS WAS THE FEN COUNTRY
BY STILL HOUSE CREATED BY DAN CANHAM AND THE COMPANY
THU FEB 137.30pm
Tickets: £5/£8/£10/£50 (Details page 5)
For two years Dan Canham went on a process of capturing conversations
with the people of the Fens – a beautiful, bleak and mysterious expanse
of flat land in East Anglia. Eel-catchers, horse breeders, museum
keepers and young farmers were all interviewed.
Ours Was The Fen Country fuses movement and sound
with their words and memories to get to the heart of
the land. It is a celebration of rural communities
that are fading from view; a poetic look at
the inevitability of change, told in the
voices of those who still know the
old words.
Dan Canham is a dancer
and choreographer and
Artistic Director of Still
House, a company who
create visually poetic work
within a variety of forms,
including dance theatre,
short film and audio-
visual installation.
Last February,
he brought his
first work, 30 Cecil Street, to
Bournemouth. It fills you up with a sense of
lightness and freedom, whether you are from the fens or not. Cambridge News

RUNNING ON EMPTY BY PROBE
Running On Empty is the story of man, woman
and their repeated collision over time, travelling
through dreams, fears and memory.
Absurd and sometimes devastating, Running On Empty moves between the epic and the intimate,
exploring our resilience to loss, our struggle for
a future and the emptiness we overcome to
survive. It has been created by a team of creative
collaborators, including director Jo McInnes
(Royal Court), writer Brad Birch
(Soho Theatre, Royal Court),
choreographer Charlie Morrissey
(Siobhan Davies) and songwriter
Lee Ross.
Based in Brighton, Probe was
founded in 2004 and Artistic Director Antonia
Grove has since worked with a range of cross art-
form collaborators to create five full length works.
At the heart of Probe’s work lies collaboration and
the use of dance, text and song to find new and
interesting ways to tell stories.

THE CRUTCH AND THE BUTTERCUP
DANCE DOUBLE BILL BY KARLA SHACKLOCK COMPANY
Raw, charged and universally resonant,
The Buttercup is a simple yet powerful
story about hope – expressed through
the body and a series of everyday,
continuously transforming, objects. Using
live music and set against a constantly
shifting visual landscape, Karla
bravely bares her soul in this physical
and evocative performance.
The Crutch depicts a highly intense relationship that
swings from violence to breathtaking tenderness. Set to
a pounding live score and using a huge pile of crutches,
the duet explores what it means and how it feels to be
there for someone at a time of crisis. The performers decide
the structure of the work live in the moment of performance –
meaning that each performance is completely unique.
Karla Shacklock Company, based in Bristol, are supported
as a “Dream Artist” at Pavilion Dance South West.
The company aim to allow their audience to have
an experience, to feel, to be with them,
rather than just to sit and watch.

JEWELS CHOREOGRAPHY: GEORGE BALANCHINE MUSIC: GABRIEL FAURÉ, IGOR STRAVINSKY, PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY
Choreographed in 1967 and inspired by the famous jewellers of New
York’s Fifth Avenue, this ballet is a tribute to women, and to the cities
of Paris, New York and St Petersburg. With its jewel-like costumes, it
celebrates the three cities and three dance schools that forged the
elegance, aesthetic and style of choreographer George Balanchine.
‘Emeralds’ was conceived as a poetic tribute to the French romantic school
and ‘Rubies’ to the American tradition of Broadway musicals, while ‘Diamonds’
honours the virtuosity of classical Russian dancers.

MUSIC: DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH
Lucien, a young provincial and budding composer, sets out to conquer
the Parisian scene in search of glory. His success soon blinds him, and he
betrays his friends and his love.
Lost Illusions is a new ballet, created in Moscow in 2011 by Alexei Ratmansky
with dramaturgical advice by French actor, writer and director Guillaume
Gallienne. This stylised adaptation of Honoré de Balzac’s novel
features thwarted love, ambition and disillusionment, with 19th century
Paris as its backdrop.
In 1923, in a seaside town in the south of the Soviet Union,
where trade and the mafia are flourishing, Boris falls in
love with Rita – a cabaret dancer at The Golden
Age, and the girlfriend of the local gangster.
The Golden Age is a refreshing satire, created
for the Bolshoi by Yuri Grigorovich, with jazz
and cabaret musical parodies, frantic pace,
passionate intrigue and a variety of dance styles
from classical to grotesque, folk and acrobatic. In
the midst of this magical whirlwind, Boris and Rita’s
love is drenched in poetic lyricism.

An amazing learning experience ... enhanced by the always supportive staff. The opportunity ... allowed me to develop as a professional,
pursue my personal interests and gain a qualification.
Each year a select number of students complete their
Gold Arts Award with us. This qualification demonstrates
a dedication to the arts industry and provides young
people (aged up to 25) with the opportunity to gain
industry insight through developing their own arts projects
and events. Joanne Collingbourne, from The University
of Surrey, spent a year with PDSW. For her Arts Award,
she worked with our youth company, 2BU, became a
student teacher for ICON Summer School and was heavily
involved on a variety of other regional and local projects.

We are excited to be the only
venue in the South West to host
the touring exhibition of State
of Emergency’s Black Dance
Archives project this spring.
The Black Dance Archives
project celebrates the
contribution that British Black
dance has made to the UK’s
dance scene and cultural life
and preserves this important
history for future generations.
Apart from the collection of
a physical archive from 29
celebrated individuals and
companies, the project includes
a two-year programme of
dynamic participatory activity
to bring the archive to life, and
a brand-new comprehensive
website to ensure that this
previously hidden treasure trove
of information will be available
for all to experience. learn from
and enjoy.
The project is delivered by State of Emergency with generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
British Black Dance has had a real impact on our country’s cultural heritage over the last 50 years, and this project meets a real need to draw together and preserve collections relating to
this history Nerys Watts, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund South West

EXHIBITION
CHOREOLAB 3IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SOUTH EAST DANCE
The idea of ChoreoLAB was born in 2011 to
offer new British South Asian choreographers
more opportunities to develop work. The first
ChoreoLAB was delivered by South East Dance
in the shape of a week-long residency with studio
space and time for six artists to explore new
choreographic ideas.
Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) became a
partner for ChoreoLAB 2, which offered time and
space to four British Asian choreographers and
the chance to share their work with an audience
of programmers and venue promoters during the
South Asian Dance Summit in May 2013 at Pavilion
Dance in Bournemouth.
Following on from ChoreoLAB 1 and 2,
ChoreoLAB 3 will provide a tailored programme
of activity and financial support for one, possibly
two artists.
The focus will be
on choreographic
and artistic
development,
with mentors or
creative producers
from South East Dance and PDSW spending
time with the artist in the studio and giving
feedback on process, current work or research. In
addition, it will be discussed how the work might
be taken forward, where possible encouraging
partnerships and relationships in the area where
the artist is based.
Each artist will receive a budget to cover fees,
collaborators and expenses.
If you would like to receive more information
or apply for ChoreoLAB 3, please visit
www.southeastdance.org.uk or contact South
East Dance Programme Coordinator
Ash Mukherjee in Breathe, developed during ChoreoLAB 2 with collaborator Predrag Pajdic.
First of all a huge THANK YOU for a magnificent time at Pavilion Dance during ChoreoLAB 2. Ash and I are happy beyond words Predrag Pajdic, film maker and collaborator

DANCE DEVELOPMENT
INTEGRATED CHOREOLAB
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SOUTH EAST DANCE AND GDANCE
Pavilion Dance South West, South East Dance
and GDance are also working in partnership to
deliver the first Integrated ChoreoLAB in April
2014, responding to the lack of development and
choreographic opportunities for artists working in
integrated dance.
The LAB is an opportunity for three artists to
experiment with ideas, test possibilities or develop
new work for a week whilst providing a safe space
to debate the needs/wants of the sector. We will
also offer the opportunity for artists to bring in a
collaborator/mentor of their choice to add value
to their creative process. Creative producers from
PDSW and South East Dance will also spend time
in the studio with the artists, giving feedback and
advice on process, current work and research.
Alongside an informal sharing at the end of the
LAB week, the artists will get the opportunity to
present up to 15 minutes of their work as part of
the Integrated Dance Summit (16 and 17 May
2014 at Pavilion Dance) to an invited audience of
venue promoters and programmers from across
the country.
In addition, discussions will take place with the
artists about how they may develop opportunities
for their work to move forwards, where possible
encouraging partnerships and relationships in the
area where each artist is based.
Each artist will receive a budget to cover fees,
collaborators and expenses.
If you would like to receive more information
or apply for the Integrated ChoreoLAB, please
contact Danielle Rose, Programming and
Producing Manager at Pavilion Dance South West,

DANCETAG
DanceTag is a new game, created by Pavilion Dance South West, which anyone with a smartphone can play. You can download the app, tag interesting places by filming yourself dancing there, and then share your film. You can choose to play just for fun or you can challenge others and become dance champion of your favourite place.
DanceTag is a great way to connect more people through dance – both on a pure entertainment level but also offering new ways for those involved in dance to connect and share work or ideas.
For more information, please contact Zannah Doan at [email protected]
