A HISTORY OF TURKISH NAVAL AVIATION

The Ottoman Navy Flying Service was established on June 27, 1914 and planned to operate 15 Nieuport Hydroavions ordered in France. However, lack of trained personnel and aircraft early in the war prevented the service from operating independently and its personnel served at Gallipoli with the ‘German Navy Seaplane Group’. In June 1916 three Gotha WD2s were given to the service and its first operational unit, 1nci Deniz Tayyare Bölüğü (1st Seaplane Company) was formed. On its transfer from Istanbul to Izmir two of its aircraft had to force-land on the water and one was seized by the British. Later the unit used its aircraft for reconnaissance of the Anatolian coastline. In May 1917 2nci Deniz Tayyare Bölüğü was formed at Ereğli on the Black Sea coast and later in March 1918 3ncü Deniz Tayyare Bölüğü at Batum. The service used the following aircraft: One Gotha WD1/Trainer, three Gotha WD2, two Hansa-Brandenburg NW, two Gotha WD12, one Gotha WD13 and five LVG SF5. When during the War of Independence it was possible to smuggle out five Gotha WD13s from a depot, the service was re-established in July 1921 at Amasra on the Black Sea coast. With the war having been won the force in February 1923 moved to Güzelyali south of Izmir as the main threat now came from the Aegean Sea. New equipment was received already in 1924/25 and in 1928 the Navy Flying Organisation got more operational independence with the formation of the IV. Deniz Tayyare Taburu (the 4th Seaplane Battalion) at Güzelyali. The unit was renamed the 5th battalion in 1932 and in 1934 its capabilities were greatly expanded with the delivery of Southampton seaplanes especially modified for bombing and torpedo attack. During 1943 the large seaplanes had been worn out and the torpedo attack mission was taken over by land-based aircraft. Gradually the Navy Flying organisation dwindled to a flight of Walrus seapla- nes called ‘Deniz Kurmay Kitaati’ (Navy Command Flight). This flight disbanded in 1946, with the withdrawal of the remaining three Walrus. In 1971 Turkey was offered, via NATO, a number of anti-submarine aircraft of the type S-2 Tracker. It was then decided to reorganise the former Navy Flying Organisation like it was before, e.g. the aircraft were maintained and flown by air force personnel but the operational control rested with the navy. The first unit to be created was 301 Filo at Etimesğut on October 18, 1971. It adopted the name ‘Marti’ and started training on four ex Royal Netherlands Navy S-2As which had started to arrive in June. At the same time operational equipment in the form of twelve S-2Es was bought in the USA. They were delivered in early 1972. With the arrival of the S-2Es the unit moved to the 6th Air Base at Bandirma. Meanwhile a second unit, the ‘Deniz Helikopter Skvadron’ (Sea helicopter squadron) was formed at the Güverçinlik Army Airfield on August 15, 1972 under the auspices of the Army. In October this unit received its equipment in the form of three AB204B/ASs. The unit was to provide ASW operation around the Dardanelles and from Navy ships. The unit was renamed ‘Deniz Helikopter Birlik’ (Sea Helicopter Unit) in February 1973 and the first landing on a ship was made in September. From mid 1973 the old Kocaeli airfield, from where Beaufighters were flown in 1948-49, near Izmir was selected to be the new Naval Air Base. The helicopter unit relocated to here in May 1973 and in 1976 the 301 Filo followed. At this time the base was renamed ‘Gengiz Topel’ after a pilot killed in action on Cyprus in 1964 and on August 4th 1976 the Deniz Hava Üs Komuntanliği (Naval Air Base Command) was formed. The helicopter unit was at this time renamed 351 Filo. The years between 1977 and 1980 saw the addition of seven ex US Navy S-2Es and three AB212ASWs and in the late eighties 11 more S-2Es and twelve AB212ASW were received. Today the 301 Filo flies six TB20s in the training role while waiting for new equipment to re- place the Trackers which were grounded in 1993. From 351 Filo helicopters are allocated to Naval Districts according to operational needs and detachments are based onboard frigates and supply ships. An order for four SH-60B’s signed in 1997 had been delayed by the US Congress but was effectuated in 2002. Thus the Navy has finally introduced its new SH-60B helicopters and a replacement for its S-2E maritime recce aircraft, in the form of six locally built CN235MSA’s has been introduced. The Coast Guard is now a well equipped force with its new AB412EP helicopters and CN235MPA search planes. 1914: Ottoman Naval Flying organisation formed July 1914

Quantity: - 1/3/2/8/1 - Service Period: 1916 - 1924 Service History: The Gotha WD aircraft became the work-horse of both the German Naval Service operating in Turkish waters and the Ottoman Naval Service. Developed from the LD2 the type was continuously developed during the war. The WD1 was unarmed, the WD2 had a ma- chinegun on top of the wing allowing a 360 arch of fire whereas all later models had conventional C-type armament. In the end of the war a number of WD13s were delivered to the German Navy and they probably were the aircraft later found in storage in Istanbul. Eight Gotha WD13s were delivered from Germany in September 1918, just before the war ended. Four WD.13 and a WD.15 surviving the 1st World War, in a depot in Istanbul, were in 1921 smuggled out and successfully transferred to Amasra on the Black Sea coast. There, a Naval Seaplane Company was formed. Three were barely airworthy in late 1922 after having performed some successful attacks on Greek shipping. The unit was moved to Ismit in late 1922 and to Güzelyali/Izmir in early 1923. 1nci Deniz Tayyare Bölüğü was formed at Güzelyali in jan1923 and the floatplanes were kept in service (but seldom flown) until re- placed by Savoia 16Ter’s in early 1924. Guarding Turkey’s vast coastline in the first years after independence had high priority. Consequently one of the first procurements made by the young republic was that of eight Savoia 16Bis/M flyingboats for the Naval Aviation Service. This first batch had 300HP Fiat engines and was given serials 601-8 and issued to the 1nci Deniz Tayyare Bölüğü at Güzelyali. Here they were initially used to train a cadre of new naval aviators. In 1926 a batch of 12 400HP Lorraine-Dietrich powered machines were added. The seaplane unit was in 1928 renumbered 11.Deniz Tayyare Bölüğü. Later in 1928 eight Savoia 59s with 450HP engines were received and at the same time the survivors of the first batches were re-engined. It was not until 1938 that these excellent machines were replaced with six Supermarine Walrusses. In 1924-25 the populations of Izmir and Istanbul collected money for two Rohrbach RoIIIA long-range flying-boats which were ordered in March 1926. Carrying the names of their donating cities, the aircraft were delivered from Copenhagen in August and September 1926 to 11nci Deniz Tayyare Bölüğü. Later they carried the serials 1201/2 and provided reliable service until replaced in 1934. The aircraft proved easy to maintain and fly and they were replaced by six Southamptons in 1934. By 1932 the relations with Great Britain had improved to the extend that Turkey again was willing to order military equipment from that country. In 1933 six Supermarine Southampton Mk.IIs with 500HP Hispano-Suiza 12Nb engines and racks for carrying torpedoes and bombs were ordered. When the first two were delivered in November 1933 they replaced the venerable RoIIIAs and a new ‘Deniz Tayyare Bombardiman Bölüğü’ (seaplane bomber company), the 31st, was formed at Güzelyali. The Southamptons were retired in late 1943, their mission being taken over by a new Torpedo-bomber group. Arriving in April 1938, they were issued to 11.DzTyBl. Later, when the Seaplane Battalion was dis- banded in 1943, they served with a flight of the 105th Torpe- do-bomber group. The three surviving machines (1901/04/05) were retired from service in January 1946. The aircraft were specially modified by Supermarine. Quantity:-4/26 (4) - Service Period: 1971 - 1994 Service History: The Turkish Naval Air Service was resurrected in 1971 and its first unit to be created was 301 Filo which formed at Etimesgut October 18, 1971. It adopted the name ‘Marti’ (Seagull) and started training on four ex Royal Netherlands Navy S-2As which had started to arrive on June 28, 1971. At the same time operational aircraft in the form of twelve S-2Es were bought in USA for $55 million. They were delivered between March 3 and August 4, 1972. With the arrival of the S-2Es operations were flown from the Bandirma Air Base, under the 6th Air Base Command, to where the squadron had relocated in August 1972. From mid 1973 the old Kocaeli airfield (from where Beaufighters were flown in 1947-48) near Izmit, was selected to be the new Naval Air Base. On August 4th 1976 the Deniz Hava Üs Komutanliği was formed and 301 Filo moved to the new base which was renamed Cengiz Topel Air Base after a Turkish pilot who was killed on Cyprus in 1964. Between 1978-80 another replenishment batch of seven ex US Navy S-2Es were received and further in the late eighties seven (eleven) more from stores in Arizona. In the early nineties the Trackers were earmarked to be modernised with new engines and modern electronics, but after three aircraft had crashed in 1992-93 this scheme was abandoned and the aircraft withdrawn from use in 1996. By 1999, fifteen aircraft were still in operational storage at Kayseri. One of these aircraft, 850 was converted into a fire-bomber with turbo-prop engines by TAI the same year. Quantity: -3/15/2- Service Period: 1972-, 2006- Service History: The second Naval Aviation squadron, Deniz Helikopter Skadron, was formed at Güverçinlik Army airfield on 15 August 1972, initially under the auspices of the Army under whom a cadre of Naval officers received helicopter training. Shortly after, on October 4, the first helicopters in the form of three AB204B/ASs were received. The unit was to provide ASW and Anti-shipping operations in the Bosphorus and Dardanelles waterways being based both on shore and on ships. Having been renamed Deniz Helikopter Birlik the unit was relocated to Kocaeli on May 13th 1973 after having worked up on its new helicopters. When on August 4th 1976 both Naval squadrons where united at the Topel Air Base the helicopter unit was renamed 351 Filo and the navy took over command of both units. Three AB212ASs complemented the AB204s in 1977 and another twelve helicopters of the latter type were received in 1987-88 to be used both in the ASW and EW role. From 351 Filo the helicopters are allocated to Naval districts according to operational needs and also based onboard frigates and supply ships of the Turkish Navy.

Italian built AB212AS helicopters form the shipborne anti-submarine force. The initial three delivered can be distinguished by their British radars having a different radome.

Quantity: -8 + 17 - Service Period: 2002- Service History: The first order of four was signed in 1997 followed by an order for four more in 2001, with an option on eight Seahawks. A further six helicopters of the model CH-60S were also put on option. The first aircraft flew in January 2001 to be delivered to Turkey later in that year. On April 26, 2002 the first three arrived by An-124. Two further batches were delivered in June and July 2002. ATR-72-600MP/ASW Quantity: -10- Service Period: 2009 - Service History: In January 2005 Alenia Aeronautica was selected to deliver ten ATR-72MP/ASW platforms to the Turkish Navy. To be used for Anti Submarine Warfare and Maritime Patrol missions. They were to be based on the commercial ATR-72-500. However, in mid-2013 it was changed and Alenia will deliver its first of two ATR 72-600 maritime utility aircraft to the Turkish navy during June that year, with the service to receive six maritime patrol examples by late 2018. The new programme schedule, aircraft number and configuration is based on an amendment signed last year to the original contract .Under the original Meltem 3 programme Alenia and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) were to deliver 10 ATR 72-500s in an anti-submarine/anti-surface warfare configuration, including the Thales Amascos mission system. It was confirmed on 9 May, that a platform switch will provide aircraft with a new glass cockpit and more powerful engines. The -600 will also have new equipment including an automatic identification system, Link 16 datalink and weapons including the Mk 54 lightweight torpedo requested by the Turkish navy. The contract amendment also calls for a logistic support package for the first two aircraft, provided locally by Turkish company Bora Je. The first two ATR 72-600s will be delivered in a utility version for personnel and cargo transport, respectively in June and July.The first "green" ATR 72-600 due to be converted to the maritime patrol configuration by TAI arrived in Turkey during April, and is being modified. Following its next flight in 2015, the platform will be transferred to Italy, where Alenia will be responsible for completing testing and certification activities. The navy's first example will be delivered in February 2017, with the remainder to follow before the end of 2018.

Bell AB412EP-SAR Quantity: -9/6- Service Period: 2002 - Service History: On March 20 1997 a contract for five AB412 worth $49 million was awarded. Later, due to political disagreements between Italy and Turkey, the contract was in jeopardy. This was resolved and an additional four aircraft were ordered. The first aircraft was seen on the assembly line in September 1999, to be delivered in Spring 2001. Delivery was delayed and it was not until July 2002 that the first batch of five was delivered, four to Turkey whereas one remained in Italy for crew training.
