The Lt. Governorhighlighted the commitmentof the Govt. of India toestablish renewable sourcesof energy, including solar,wind, tidal waves andhydraulic energy, to meet thepower requirements of theIslands. He said that thework for 20MW solar planthas already been initiated inthese Isles. The Lt.Governor informed thatexperts will also be invitedto explore the feasibility forestablishing wind as well astidal wave energy in theIslands. The Lt. Governor also
desired that every Govt.establishment andinstitution should beinstalled with rooftop solarpanels to meet the powerrequirements. Besides, theLt. Governor also appealedto the general public as alsoPRI members to install thesame in their houses so thatthe goal of converting theseIslands into a pollution freeIslands can be achieved byDecember 2018. The Lt.Governor also urged thegeneral public to make best
use of Govt. schemes,providing subsidy towardsinstallation of solar panels intheir houses. Regarding theconnectivity issue, the Lt.Governor informed that hewill take up the matter forlaying under sea optical fibercable connecting theIslands with Chennaiincluding Car Nicobar andother outlying Islands, withthe concerned Ministry. Themajor project, which isestimated to cost Rs. 1100
crore will require about 1800km cable, which is not aneasy work, but will be takenup at the earliest, assured theLt. Governor. The Lt. Governor alsostressed the need forensuring that the benefits ofall developmental activitiespercolate down to the grassroot level so that the goalof the Government can beachieved.
