Facts about tea Did you know that a cup of black tea has half the

amount of caffeine than a cup of coffee. Drinking milk may make stronger bones but tea

does the same thing. Tea was discovered 5,000 years ago. Drinking tea helps control cholesterol and is good

for your heart. If you want to give your tea more flavor it’s better

to use a loose leaf instead of a tea bag. The tea bag was invented by accident, by Thomas Sulivan.

Process of tea First they do plucking. They only take the three leaves on the top of Camellia sinensis.

Secondly, they do withering. This means they lay out the leaves so they loose their freshness. This is very important so the leaves don’t crumble when they are being rolled.

Thirdly, they do rolling. The tea leaves are rolled, pressed, or twisted. This is the beginning of oxidation.

Page 6: Tea book

The fourth step is oxidation. This is when oxygen mixes with the enzymes in the rolled leaf. This makes the leaf turn red/brown.

The final step is firing. This means they have to heat the leaves quickly to dry them to stop oxidation.
