1 BRIEF SUMMARY OF PROJECT WCLT Project WCLT has been established as one of the pilot projects of BeliaSiswa in July 2014 at Rumah Bakti Nur Hikmah, Kajang Selangor. The project aims to help students, mainly orphans in Rumah Bakti Nur Hikmah, who are being left behind in education. Additionally, this project has been awarded a grant, approximately RM 9,000 from KHiND Starfish Foundation and has received massive support from KHiND Holdings Berhad since then. WCLT is an acronym for the word; We Care Love and Teach which represents the project’s main objective, which is to provide the support systems that are needed for the orphans to improve their education. We bring the elements of ‘love’ and ‘care’ to our students before we get into teaching when executing this project. This is because we believe that these two elements are very important for the long-term sustainability of the project and the impact on the students. In addition to that, Project WCLT is trying to enhance the basic knowledge of 3Ms (Menulis, Membaca, Menilai) within the 35 students that are staying in Rumah Bakti Nur Hikmah by having interactive lessons every week. Also, this project has recruited approximately 90 tutors (60 out of 90 tutors are permanent tutors), which are mostly university students in Malaysia with different backgrounds to participate in this noble cause. This project has been executed in three different phases; Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 and is still ongoing until now. The expansion plan for Project WCLT will be done next year (year 2015) in Negeri Sembilan and Banting, Selangor. It is hoped that this project will attract more university students to participate and make a difference in education, especially for those who are left behind. We believe that education is a long process and we’re up for the challenge!

They do not need expensive toys to be happy. But surely they need us to support them: LOVE

A child’s background should not determine their future trajectory. Teach and spread the love.

He is not a teacher. He simply wants to help others for the betterment of his community

SELF- REFLECTION FROM THE TUTORS

“My tutee was a good student. She just needed a little push in her education. As for other students, they just needed a little attention from people who they lived with. It was a good experience to be part in this program” Finaz Bakar “As a foreigner, it was difficult communicating with them at first but as time passed by, we gained a mutual affection to one another and this brought us closer as well as an easy in tutoring and understanding...” Abdullah Osama al-Hindi, Student from Saudi Arabia, MMU Cyberjaya. “…They were very friendly people. They were quite shy and sometimes they’re overly attached to the tutors, they are children that just need more and more attention” Hishamuddin Hasim, Student of University Kebangsaan Malaysia, “They were welcoming me with full hearts. Massive affections, I must say. :)” Ikram Hamzah, MMU Student Melaka. “They showed their interest in learning and welcomde me in enthusiasm. They were very concerned to have me there every week. After all, they were just awesome!” -Nur Hidayah Mohd Rasid- “They have improved, a lot! They were quite 'naughty’ the first time you met them. They welcomed and loved us with open arms, and their attitudes were better than before” -Ilman Faiz- “My tutee was Nurul Hamizah (year 2). Honestly, I was happy for be her tutor. Based on my observation, I think she’s a smart and hardworking girl. She could complete her mathematics problem easily! I think she can be a good student and succeed in her studies in the future.” -Fauzi Che Sa-

“Based on my experience, my relationships with the students were not too great at first. However, after a few weeks we managed to build up a good connection with them and it started to grow stronger every single week. They ran and hugged you whenever they saw you coming to Rumah Bakti every weekend. It was so lovely! Frankly, they needed attention from the tutors and there was nothing bad about them. Sometimes, they could be so naughty, but hey! They’re just normal kids! We used to be in that phase, didn’t we? These kids were extremely wonderful! They implemented the knowledge that we taught them i.e thank-you culture. They had improved a lot! Example: Fattah; it was a true challenge to handle this student. He would never follow my instructions. However, once you’ve got his trust and created the bond with him, he would say thank you to me. I think that was one of the best feelings ever! Also, I could not have asked for anything more when he told me that he loved me as his big sister. The hardest and probably the saddest thing was when I was about to leave, he would send me back to my car and waited patiently until I started to drive my car away. Afzan, aged 10, was another student that I managed to teach for this project. At the beginning, he did not want to do his exercises and preferred to continue with his year 3’s worksheets. But things do change, isn’t it? In phase 3, I saw him constructing his own sentences and seeing that moment, I knew that, he was not the old Afzan anymore. And I was so glad that he had improved a lot for the last 3 months. That is a part of my story…” Tiara Hereena “…joining WCLT was an experience that I will never forget. This program opened my eyes to see the reality of life that I had never paid attention to before. It's like they were invisible to me but not anymore. It's like standing in the hallway of the hospital and seeing people passing by without knowing why they were there and their stories. All of the time I spent with them, I learned more about life than I did from the classroom. Even though they were sent to the orphanage, it doesn't guarantee the quality of their lives. Living with sheer strangers will cause a lot of distress for me. I imagine it would be worse for them because they don't have anyone to turn to. At least, I can call my family to tell them about my day but them? To whom can they tell the sorrow in their hearts? To whom can they share the pain in their lives? To whom? After joining WCLT, I saw a different side of me. The side that cares about people who are unfortunate, the burning desire to help them and the passion to do something to make others happy. I became more empathy towards other people. At time, when I think I have the biggest problem in the world, I will sit back and reflect about other people who are less fortunate than I am. This made be to be a grateful

person. I would encourage others to join any volunteering program. The pure happiness and satisfaction that I got from volunteering can only be shared with others through volunteering. Last but not least, if we don't do something to change our surrounding, then who will?” Rofi Rosli “…they welcomed us every time we arrived at Rumah Bakti. I could see how excited they were when they saw us there. Before the teaching sessions, they would never forget to recite a Dua', and after we had completed two-hour of teaching and was about to go home, they will greet goodbye and 'salam' us as usual, and they will keep on asking all of us "minggu depan datang tak" and that was enough to describe how the kids were. Also, I strongly believe that these kids can still improve more especially in academic.” -Anis ‘Afifi- CONCLUSION This project has touched so many hearts and souls for the past three months. We do understand that it is not going to be easy to tackle massive problems especially educational problems that are happening in Malaysia right now. However, we really hope that this effort will create a huge ripple effect not just for the primary and secondary students who are having difficulties in learning, but also for the university students to start taking actions to make our society a better place to live in. As mentioned earlier on, it takes months probably years to have the right modules to be implemented for the respective projects, and we’re up for that challenge! We have seen massive improvements in terms of reading, writing and reasoning amongst the students at Rumah Bakti Nur Hikmah Kajang and we will be expanding this project at other locations next year because we want to help more and we want more people, (university students, corporate sectors and the society) to get onboard. Together, we can achieve more! Also, it has been ups and downs when executing this project. There were mistakes and there were victories. But through thick and thin, we have learned so many things through this amazing project and we would like to express our deepest gratitude to KHiND Starfish Foundation for always supporting and believing in our potentials. We have met a lot of young, talented and amazing youths who wanted to make a difference in the society! And thank you for letting us to be part of Project Happiness. We are so glad! We hope that “ ONE DAY EVERY CHILD HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTAIN GOOD AND EXCELLENT EDUCATION REGARDLESS OF THEIR BACKGROUNDS”

THANK YOU
