Introduction

The purpose of this handbook is to provide information that will assist replacement teachers to be successful in our schools. Students, returning teachers and schools all greatly benefit when the replacement teachers are well prepared for their important role in our schools.

The information you will find in the handbook includes:

Section 2 / General Information for the Replacement Teacher

On-site The Principal or his/her designate is responsible for the replacement teacher’s assignment at the school.

Article 2.6 (a) A substitute teacher shall normally follow the schedule of the teacher who is absent from duties. Any alteration to the regular schedule will be explained to the substitute by school administration upon request and must comply to adjustments which might normally occur if the absent teacher was in attendance.

Replacement teachers should dress professionally and according to the dress code. He/she should be a role model for students.

A replacement teacher should maintain a professional attitude and stance at all times.

Classroom Discipline It is difficult to generalize about classroom discipline as there are so many factors that create a classroom atmosphere from which student behavior may develop. The general rule is to be FIRM, FAIR and CONSISTENT.

Following are some suggestions which can be useful in maintaining classroom discipline:

• Remember at all times that you are a responsible adult.

• Most students will respond to directions that are clear and precise and given in an amiable fashion.

• Your personality and sense of humor will go a long way in determining your success as a replacement teacher.

• Accentuate the positive. Use recognition, praise and acceptance which will ensure a climate of good human relations in the classroom.

If special problems arise, the replacement teacher should turn to the Principal or designate for guidance or assistance. Remember – Discipline is important but self-discipline is vital!

School Timetables: Supervision, Lunch Break Remember that each school has its own culture and the routines and procedures will vary. Following are some guidelines to assist the replacement teacher. The replacement teacher will be assigned for a full-day, a morning or an afternoon.

Article 2.6 (b) Substitutes who accept half-day assignments in sites where the morning timetable extends beyond 12:00 noon shall be released by 12:00 noon if they are scheduled for an afternoon assignment at another site.

Replacement teachers who are on their third full-day or more of their assignment will assume regular supervision and preparation blocks; however, the replacement teacher may be required to provide supervision on the first day or subsequent days of an assignment.

The replacement teacher will assume all the supervisory responsibilities of the person they’ve replaced for the duration of the assignment.

The replacement teacher can be given responsibility for the full schedule of the regular teacher within the supervisory times discussed above. Supervision times will be noted in plans.

The replacement teacher is entitled to a 30 minute student-free lunch break.

Reporting to the Assigned School School regulations apply to all, including replacement teachers, including full-day assignments, half-day assignments and early dismissal days. Do not leave before all students have been dismissed unless authorized by the Principal or designate.

After arriving at the school office, the replacement teacher shall:

• Report to the school administration and state the name of the teacher who they are replacing.

• Complete the required sign-in procedure. • Pick up the keys and a folder of information.

The school administration will provide information for the day which includes the room and/or office number, the timetable and the location of replacement teacher plans. This information could include: how to access the office by phone and other phone lines; computer login; class attendance logs; and other in-school specific codes where applicable.

Replacement Teacher Daily Assignments In the classroom, the replacement teacher shall locate the teacher’s plan book, lesson plans and other appropriate materials for the classes of the day.

In an emergency, it might not have been possible for adequate plans to be made by the regular teacher. In this instance, the replacement teacher will contact the Principal and have to be resourceful in planning the day’s activities utilizing previous day work, garnering ideas from other teachers with the same grade level or subject, etc. Although the internet can be a lifeline, be aware that many sites are blocked on the school computers.

Tasks for the Replacement Teacher: Set-up for the classes: • Seek clarification or discuss special details of the day and the school area with

neighboring teachers – they can be a lifeline at times. • Welcome students and introduce yourself. • Keep careful records for the regular teacher of the following items: attendance, money

collected, special notes from parents, etc. • Follow teacher assignments carefully and maintain a positive working atmosphere with

excellent classroom behavior. • Monitor and assist students with assignments. • Never leave the class unattended. • Never attempt to restrain or discipline a student using physical contact of any form.

Teaching Practicum Students: If there is a teaching practicum student conducting the class, the student will proceed with the teaching assignment. The replacement teacher is not responsible for evaluation or feedback; however, a positive comment directed to the student would be appropriate and welcomed. Concluding the Replacement Teacher Assignment The replacement teacher shall leave the lesson plans, records, materials and any useful comments, checklists or summaries that might be helpful for the regular teacher. He/she may wish to leave their name if they would like to be assigned to the class again. He/she shall report to the school office at the end of the day to indicate closure to their assignment and to thank the school for the opportunity to contribute to the learning environment. All money or other valuables, articles found with the finder’s name, articles taken from students for safekeeping, etc. must be left at the school office noting the owner for each item. Items Requiring Principal Approval A replacement teacher must follow these guidelines regarding student care:

• Students are not allowed to leave school under any circumstances without authorization from the Principal or designate.

• Written or telephone communications with parents require authorization of the Principal or designate.

• Visitors to the school are not to interview students without authorization of the Principal or designate.

• Any student who appears to be ill should be sent to the office accompanied when appropriate, by one or two students.

• Students must not be detained after hours without authorization from the Principal or designate.

• Student transfers and withdrawals must be sent to the school office. Special Needs and Medically Dependent Students The increasing number of students on medication has serious implications for the role of teachers. It is not incumbent upon the replacement teacher to provide medical treatment in excess of that ordinarily required of a reasonable parent of any child. Replacement teachers should follow the directions left by the classroom teacher regarding procedures for special needs and medically dependent students. Extra information may be provided by the Principal or designate.

Accessing Aesop Telephone: 1 800 942-3767 ( 1 800 94 AESOP) Website: www.aesoponline.com Your sign on ID is your home telephone number including the area code (780 + 7 digit telephone number with no punctuation). If you do not already have a PIN, call Staff Replacement at 780-441-6059.You may change that PIN using the link (Change PIN). Once you have signed on to the system, you should print the “Quick Start User Guide” that is provided on the opening menu. It allows you to print the telephone instructions, the web instructions or both. The “Basic Training Video” and the “Advanced Training Video” will also provide some help in getting to know the site. “Search for Assignments” allow you to view the assignments for which you have the necessary qualifications. “View My Schedule” shows you which assignments you have completed and those for which you are already booked. “Add Non-Work Day” blocks your availability for a particular day. “Tell ECS When to Call” allows you to set times for the automatic system to call you. You can also tell it not to call you at all. Please note that this is the automated system. Staff Replacement might still call you in cases of need. If you have not already done so, please phone AESOP at 1-800-94-AESOP and voice your name on the phone. This will allow employees to pre-arrange assignments with you and then put your name into the absence via the telephone. You only need to do this once. Web-mail and PeopleSoft Access Upon completion of your first replacement assignment, your work information will be transferred into the Human Resources data system from AESOP. This process typically takes a minimum of 7 business days before you are able to receive the information necessary to access your webmail and peoplesoft account.

Following the 7th day, contact the Help Desk at (780) 441-6111 to ask for assistance in setting up your webmail and peoplesoft account. You will be given your employee number and user name. As well, you will then be directed to follow the specific procedures to activate and access your Webmail and PeopleSoft as outlined in “Steps for Accessing Webmail and PeopleSoft” (found in Appendix V). If at any time throughout the school year you (replacement teacher) have subbed minimally or not at all for 90 consecutive days, you will be denied email access and your name removed from the replacement roster for the remainder of the 2010-2011 school year. Access to email is terminated at the end of June for all replacement staff and re-activated no later than the end of September in the new school year for “active replacement staff”.

Each year all replacement staff needs to reapply. See Appendix VI (page 26) for details. If you are preparing calling cards, you should be using that e-mail address. If you have never accessed your ECSD e-mail, please go to webmail.ecsd.net , click on the “Logon Mail” icon and follow the webmail login instructions. Accepting an Assignment It is best to consider first those assignments for which you have the qualifications and training. Generally, we have replacement staff that has the qualifications for most types of positions in the district. Notwithstanding this, we do recognize that there are times when a teacher is required regardless of qualifications. Staff Replacement could be calling you at the last minute to cover an assignment that may not be in your area of expertise. At that point, our goal is to fill an absence and we do appreciate your assistance and flexibility. Administrative Regulation 211 states that replacement staff must not replace a family member. That means that parents, siblings and spouses must not accept such assignments.

**Also, replacement staff is required to accept assignments throughout the District and not remain exclusive to a number of schools only.

There are a few ways to accept an assignment:

1. You choose an assignment from openings that appear on the internet. 2. You are telephoned by the system on the evening or early morning prior to the

beginning of the job. 3. You are telephoned by Staff Replacement after the telephone system has stopped

calling out. *Replacement teachers receiving calls directly from a staff member or the school administrator is no longer an option for accepting an assignment. All assignments must be processed through the AESOP system. Regardless of how you accept a position, be certain that the job appears on your schedule in AESOP. You will only be paid for positions that appear on your schedule.

Cancelling an Assignment At this time, only replacement staff or school administration or staff replacement staff may cancel a job. In order for this “privilege” to continue, there are a few protocols that must be followed. Please note that administrators and staff members treat the cancellation of assignments very seriously.

• You must call the staff member you are replacing or the school administration prior to canceling a position.

• If that is not possible, call Staff Replacement (7:30 am-12:30 pm) for further instructions. • When a substitute teacher cancels a job within 12 hours of the job start time , AESOP

will not give that substitute access to further jobs on that day. This is designed to assist in improving our fill-rates as last minute cancellations are often unfilled and covered internationally.

• Do not cancel within 12 hours of the beginning of the job unless it is an emergency.

Arrive Early All assignments are unique. It is important to allow yourself time to prepare to meet the expectations. If you receive a late call, make every effort to arrive in a timely fashion.

Report to the office prior to going to the classroom. They may issue you the necessary keys, that particular school’s replacement staff handbook, instructions, and other valuable information. In the classroom, locate the necessary materials (plan book, seating plan, class list, emergency instructions, etc.)

A few suggestions:

• Be in the classroom when the students arrive. • Mark assignments or tests that were completed during the day if possible. • Leave a brief summary of the day, including reports on individuals. • Leave the room as you found it.

Increasing the Chances of Being Called for Open Positions The most successful way of securing jobs is to ensure you do the best job you can when you are in a position. Teachers and administrators are more likely to call back someone who provided good service. If you have calling cards, leave one at the office so they know how to contact you. If you use a cell to communicate, be aware that all schools do not allow students or staff to have their cells on during school time.

When you work at a school for the first time, ensure that you meet some or all of the school administration. Principals decide on long term replacements during the year and are more likely to remember you if you did a good job while at the school and had an opportunity to meet you.

Collective Agreement Issues Every school has its own start and end times for morning and afternoon. This occasionally causes challenges for half day assignments. If you have accepted a half day position and the morning bell rings after 12:00, you should normally complete the assignment as a half day assignment. On the other hand, if you have accepted an afternoon assignment on that same day, then the school must make arrangements to replace you so that you can meet your afternoon obligations. Article 2.6 (b)

Substitutes who accept half-day assignments in sites where the morning timetable extends beyond 12:00 noon shall be released by 12:00 noon if they are scheduled for an afternoon assignment at another site.

A replacement teacher shall normally follow the schedule of the teacher who is absent from duties. On occasion, a school will call a replacement teacher to replace a number of teachers over the day or the half day. In those cases, the schedule will be developed, usually by the school administration. Article 2.6 (a)

Teaching staff wishing to reactivate placement on the replacement roster need to submit an on-line application each year (see Appendix VI). All applications are received and reviewed by the Staffing Manager of Human Resource Services and an email confirmation is sent to successful applicants prior to the beginning of the new school year.

Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate

Teachers must possess a valid Alberta Teaching Certificate. For information on how to obtain a copy of your Alberta Teaching Certificate, contact Alberta Education:

Name Change: If your name has changed since your last teaching assignment, you must obtain a new certificate with your new name.

Banking: If you are new to the sub roster or have changed banking information please attach void cheque for direct deposit.

Interim Certificate Applicant: An interim professional certificate is provided to teachers upon completion of the requirements for a Bachelor of Education degree or to certificated teachers from outside of the province. If you require an extension of your interim certification from Alberta Education, contact Human Resource Services, Employee Relations for assistance.

Permanent Certificate Applicant: To be eligible for a permanent certificate, a teacher must meet the conditions outlined on the Alberta Education’s website at www.education.gov.ab.ca/teachercertification. See the section “Teacher Certification”.

Police Information Check A teacher must submit a copy of a Police Information Check which was completed within one year of the application date. A Police Information Check can be requested from your local police or RCMP detachment. There is a fee for this service and it may take up to three weeks to receive the document after applying. Detailed information is available by accessing, www.hrs.ecsd.net -> Careers -> Career Information.

Child Welfare (Intervention) Record Check A teacher must submit a copy of a Child Welfare (Intervention) Record Check which was completed within one year of the application date. A Child Welfare (Intervention) Record Check can be requested from any Alberta Children’s Services office. There is no fee for this service and it may take up to three weeks to receive the document after applying. Previous Teaching Experience A description of all teaching experience must be submitted in order to be paid correctly. You must include contract type, the number of days taught in each school year and the full time equivalency. The information must come directly from each past school board. Replacement teaching with our board shall be counted toward experience.

Teacher Qualification Statement (TQS) In our division, the rate of pay for a teacher employed on a replacement basis who fills the same teaching position for more than two consecutive school days, shall be paid effective the third day according to placement on the salary grid. Human Resource Services uses the Teacher Qualification Statement (TQS) and previous teacher experience (if applicable) to assure proper grid placement. Therefore, it is necessary that a TQS and previous teaching experience be submitted as soon as possible. Obtain a copy of this document by contacting the Teacher Qualification Service at:

Section 4 / Payroll Information

Payroll Procedures Monthly payroll is directly deposited on the last banking day of the month. All statutory deductions are made before money is deposited.

Payroll is processed according to the cutoff day of the schedule provided at the beginning of the school year. Do pay close attention to the exact dates included in each monthly payroll. Any discrepancies should be discussed with the Manager, Pay and Benefits. Adjustments will appear in the following pay period.

Pay Rates Day-to-Day Replacement Teacher Assignments: Day-to-day pay rate is established by the collective agreement between Edmonton Catholic Schools and the Alberta Teachers Association. This year’s rates are as follows: $219.00 (full day), $132.00 (half day).

Long-term Assignments for Replacement Teachers: When a long-term assignment has been established, Article10, Schedule A of the collective agreement provides information for salary according to the salary grid.

Article 10, Schedule B of the collective agreement provides information for payment of a teacher employed on a replacement basis who fills the same teaching position for more than two consecutive school days. The replacement teacher is paid, effective the third day, according to placement on the salary grid.

Grid Placement In order for a replacement teacher on long-term assignment to receive the proper grid placement, it is necessary to have on file: (1) verification of all previous teaching experience outside of Edmonton Catholic School District, and (2) a Statement of Qualifications from the Teacher Qualifications Service of the Alberta Teachers Association indicating the years of teacher education.

It is the responsibility of the replacement teacher to provide the district with an official verification of previous teaching experience as well as a Teacher Qualification Statement (TQS). Submitting the documents is a requirement for working at Edmonton Catholic Schools.

Record of Employment A record of employment is required to apply for employment insurance benefits. This document will be issued by Edmonton Catholic Schools payroll department for the following reasons:

• Replacement teacher indicates, in writing, of his/her intention to terminate employment.

• Replacement teacher is unemployed for a period of one week or more.

• At the end of the school year, the district will submit employment insurance information on-line. The substitute teacher must then go to the Employment Insurance website to complete the on-line application form.

Article 3- Salary Determination

3.1 (A) Evaluation of teacher’s university education shall be as determined by th Teacher

Qualification Service of the Association. In the event evaluation is not available upon commencement of duties, the teacher shall be placed at “D-minimum” in the basic salary schedule until the evaluation is received. (B) When an evaluation is retrieved, the adjustment date shall be retroactive to the

later of the first date of the duties commenced within the current school year, or the date the new qualifications were achieved.

3.2 Notwithstanding clause 3.1 the Board reserves the right to evaluate university degrees supplementary to that recognized by the Teacher Qualification Service of the Association. Such evaluation shall not be in excess of one year of teacher education for salary purposes if it appears to the Board to be in the best interest of the District to do so. The Board shall inform the Association of the cases hereof.

3.3 Teachers shall not be paid for the partial years of teacher education. 3.4 The following applies to teachers employed with the Edmonton Catholic Separate

School District No. 7: (A) A year of teaching experience shall be any one school year during which a teacher

has taught for not fewer than 115 school days. (B) Notwithstanding 3.4 (A), a teacher shall be entitled to one experience increment

for each 150 teaching days accumulated in the service of the Board provided that such service has not previously been counted for increment purposes.

3.5 The following applies to teachers hired with the Edmonton Catholic Separate District on or

after the beginning of the 2003/2004 school year. For recognition of teaching experience with other school Boards other than the Edmonton Catholic Separate School District, the following conditions shall apply:

(A) A year of teaching experience shall be any one school year during which a teacher has taught for not fewer than 115 school days.

(B) Notwithstanding 3.4 (A), a teacher shall be entitled to one experience increment

for each 150 teaching days accumulated while on contract with the School Boards other than the Edmonton Catholic Separate School District provided that such has not previously been counted for increment purposes.

(C) i)The onus of substantiating previous teaching experience while on contract rests with the teacher. ii) Proof of previous experience must be submitted to the Board within 45 calendar days of the employee’s date of hire. iii) If such evidence as referred to in (C) ii) above is submitted within the 45 calendar days, salary shall be paid according to this experience effective the employee’s date of hire. If such evidence is not submitted within the aforementioned 45 calendar days, the teacher shall be placed in the salary schedule according to the most recent acceptance statement of experience or at the minimum of his or her category according to years of university education. Upon submission of such evidence the teacher’s salary shall be adjusted effective the beginning of the month following submission of such evidence.

3.6 Notwithstanding clauses 3.4 and 3.5, a teacher shall be entitled to only one

increment per year, such increment being at the beginning of the next school year. 3.7 The Board agrees that the Association members who are, or may become, employees

of the Edmonton Catholic Teachers’ Local shall have this employment recognized for grid placement purposes on the year-to-year basis to a maximum of six years.

3.8 Teachers who hold a journeyman certificate, and who are teaching Advanced Career Technology Studies courses in their area of certification must present proof of industrial, commercial, or technical experience before they will receive any placement allowance. For every year served full time the appropriate industrial, commercial, or technical fields, one increment shall be granted to the maximum of eight increments providing only that they teach, and continue to teach, in Advance Career Technology Studies education, or as otherwise designed by the Superintendent.

3.9 A teacher who has received additional increments under clause 3.8 and who transfers or is transferred to a completely non-Career Technology Studies assignment shall be placed upon the appropriate step of the salary schedule in accordance with the number of the number of years of teaching experience as the effective date of the transfer. The category placement shall be in accordance with the applicable teacher qualification service evaluation.

3.10 All vocational education teachers entering the employ of the Board All vocational education teachers entering the employ of the Board after June 30, 1986 who are transferred to a completely no-vocational assignment due to changing enrolment patterns shall be placed upon the appropriate step of the salary schedule in accordance with the number of

years of teaching experience as at the effective date of the transfer. The category placement shall be accordance with the applicable teacher qualification service evaluation.

Appendix I – ATA Code of Professional Conduct

Alberta Teacher’s Association – Replacement Teachers Website: www.teachers.ab.ca To access the services of the ATA library, a replacement teacher must first become an active member of the Association. Active membership is automatically granted to a replacement teacher the first time during a school year that he/she is employed as a replacement teacher. The replacement teacher remains an active member until the end of the school year or until he or she is no longer on the approved replacement teacher roster of the school board, whichever occurs first.

The ATA Code of Professional Conduct stipulates minimum standards of professional conduct of teachers but is not an exhaustive list of such standards. Unless exempted by legislation, any member of the Alberta Teacher’s Association who is alleged to have violated the standards of the profession, including the provision of the code, may be subject to a charge of unprofessional conduct under the bylaws of the Association.

In relation to pupils:

1. The teacher teaches in a manner that respects the dignity and rights of all persons without

prejudice as to race, religious beliefs, colour, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical characteristics, disability, marital status, family status, age, ancestry, place of origin, place of residence, socio-economic background or linguistic background.

2. The teacher is responsible for diagnosing educational needs, prescribing and

implementing instructional programs and evaluating progress of pupils. The teacher may not delegate these responsibilities to any person who is not a teacher.

3. The teacher may delegate specific and limited aspects of instructional activity to non-

certificated personnel, provided that the teacher supervises and directs such activity.

4. The teacher treats pupils with dignity and respect and is considerate of their circumstances.

5. The teacher may not divulge information about a pupil received in confidence or in the

course of professional duties except as required by law or where, in the judgment of the teacher to do so, is in the best interest of the pupil.

6. The teacher may not accept pay for tutoring a pupil in any subjects in which the teacher is

responsible for giving classroom instructions to that pupil.

7. The teacher may not take advantage of a professional position to profit from the sale of goods or services to or for pupils in the teacher’s charge.

In relation to school authorities:

8. The teacher protests the assignment of duties for which the teacher is not qualified or

conditions which make it difficult to render professional service.

9. The teacher fulfills contractual obligations to the employer until released by mutual consent or according to law.

10. The teacher provides as much notice as possible of a decision to terminate employment.

11. The teacher adheres to agreements negotiated on the teacher’s behalf by the Association.

In relation to colleagues:

12. The teacher does not undermine the confidence of pupils to other teachers.

13. The teacher criticizes the professional competence or professional reputation of another teacher only in confidence to proper officials and after the other teacher has been informed of the criticism, subject only to subject 24 of the Teaching Profession Act.

14. The teacher, when making a report on the professional performance of another teacher,

does so in good faith and, prior to submitting the report, provides the teacher with a copy of the report, subject only to section 24 of the Teaching Profession Act.

15. The teacher does not take, because of animosity or for personal advantage, any steps to

secure the dismissal of another teacher.

16. The teacher recognizes the duty to protest through proper channels, administrative policies and a practice which the teacher cannot in conscience accept; and further recognizes that if administration by consent fails, the administrator must adopt a position of authority.

17. The teacher as an administrator provides opportunities for staff members to express their

opinions and to bring forth suggestions regarding the administration of the school.

In relation to the profession:

18. The teacher acts in a manner which maintains the honour and dignity of the profession.

19. The teacher does not engage in activities which adversely affect the quality of the teacher’s professional service.

20. The teacher submits to the Association disputes arising from professional relationships

with other teachers which cannot be resolved by personal discussion.

21. The teacher makes representations on behalf of the Association or members thereof only when authorized to do so.

22. The teacher accepts that service to the Association is a professional responsibility.

Approved by the 2004 Annual Representative Assembly pursuant to the Teaching Profession Act. Please note:

• Items 13 and 14 of the Code of Professional Conduct do not pertain to reporting to the Association on the possible unprofessional conduct of another member.

• The Teaching Profession Act, section 24(3), requires members to report forthwith to the executive secretary on the unprofessional conduct of another member.

Appendix II - Alberta Teacher Association

Tips for replacement teachers from the Alberta Teacher Association

1) Obtain a valid Alberta Teacher’s certificate or special letter of authority from Teacher Certification and Development, Alberta Education, 11160 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5K 0L2, telephone (403) 427-2045.

2) Apply to the Teacher Qualifications Service (TQS), the Alberta Teacher’s Association,

for an assessment of your university education. TQS is located in Barnett House, 11010-142 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta T5N 2R1, telephone (780)447-9400 (in Edmonton) or 1-800-232-7208 (from elsewhere in Alberta).

3) Obtain verification of past teaching experience from official sources.

4) Read and become familiar with the School Act, the Teaching Profession Act, the Code

of Professional Conduct, the Criminal Code of Canada, The Alberta Teacher’s Association Bylaws, including those on discipline and the Association’s monographs: Teachers Rights, Responsibilities and Legal Liabilities and Substitute Teachers: Integration into the School System (available through the Association).

5) Make yourself available for work.

6) Arrive at the school in sufficient time before class to familiarize yourself with the school,

its rules, other staff members, your teaching assignment and, if not previously done, the lesson plans.

7) Leave a written statement of your activities and any other information you believe to

be pertinent for the absent teacher.

8) Report to the school administration office at the conclusion of your assignment.

9) Keep an accurate record of hours worked. These will affect your eligibility for permanent certification, employment insurance and pensionable service. Regularly verify your records against those of your employer.

Please remember:

• Positive classroom management skills are an important element to your success as a replacement. Your individual professional development in this and other areas goes a long way toward guaranteeing your success.

• If you have any questions regarding your rights and responsibilities or application of

the collective agreement of your employing board, please contact association staff for assistance.

• As a replacement teacher you are an integral member of the education enterprise and

the teaching profession.

Appendix III – Practical Ideas

The Replacement Teacher Survival Kit

Most replacement teachers today wouldn’t think of entering a classroom without several extra tools. The following are just a few suggestions:

• Seating chart forms, sub folder forms, teacher report forms,

• Daily schedule forms,

• Variety of “personal favorite” lessons, worksheets, games, and activities along

with materials needed to complete the activities,

• Extra pencils, marking pens dry erase markers,

• Name tags, notepad, band-aids, whistle,

• Rewards or motivators (stickers, small items),

• Brief literature, math puzzles, Sudoku,

• Magazines (world, sports, mechanics, current events, MacLeans, etc.),

• Reading selections for variety of grade levels with accompanying crosswords,

• Sunscreen and sunhat, warm winter clothes, walking shoes.

Self-Evaluation Tool: Self-evaluation is the process whereby teachers examine their teaching in terms of effective behaviors, attitudes and feelings. The purpose of this process is professional growth. It is viewed as a most effective method of examining one’s own teaching.

Part A:

The following instructions must be completed before submitting your replacement roster application:

1. Log onto your account on www.applytoeducation.com

2. On the left side of your screen click on ‘Who Can View My Portfolio’

3. Answer the two mandatory questions at the bottom of the page and save

4. Click on ‘Edit Preferences’ to indicate your Occasional work preferences

5. Indicate "yes" to the question "Do you want to be considered for Occasional Teaching?"

6. Under‘ Preferences’ for your Placement Request select either Elementary or Secondary

7. DISREGARD ‘Update my availability’

8. For I am: from the drop down menu only select “A current employee of this District”

9. Select current contract status, if you answer “yes” complete the information requested and save both the section and then the page
