Teaching for Critical and Creative Thinking

Dr. Stephen D. Brookfield

Someone who thinks critically is able to identify and research the assumptions that frame how they think and act. Someone who thinks creatively can view ideas and actions from multiple viewpoints and can communicate through a variety of modalities. Research on how students learn to think critically and creatively shows that two factors are crucial to the process—seeing teachers model their own engagement in critical and creative thinking, and using peers as critically reflective mirrors to generate multiple perspectives. In this session, Stephen Brookfield will model critical thinking about critical thinking and introduce a number of classroom activities that can creatively engage students in purposeful learning.

Page 5: Teaching and Learning Symposium

Since beginning his teaching career in 1970, Dr. Stephen D. Brookfield has worked in England, Canada, Australia and the United States, teaching in a variety of adult educational, community educational and college settings. He has written and edited sixteen books on adult learning, teaching, leadership, critical theory, and critical thinking, six of which have won the World Award for Literature in Adult Education (in 1986, 1989, 1996, 2005, 2011 and 2012). He is currently a Distinguished University Professor of the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis–St. Paul where he works with faculty across the disciplines on improving teaching, engaging students in discussion, and teaching for critical thinking. He believes that the best teachers are critically reflective—constantly checking the assumptions they make about the best ways to help students learn skills, content and dispositions. In his presentations, he makes full use of his own autobiographical experiences working with students across a wide range of ability levels from individuals with low levels of literacy to doctoral students in a variety of disciplines.

2013 Certificate of Reflective Teaching

The Certificate of Reflective Teaching serves three main purposes. First, the Certificate of Reflective Teaching program provides instructors the opportunity to learn pedagogical skills and information about teaching not necessarily gained during formal training in graduate school. Second, the Certificate allows instructors to gain recognition for their efforts to become more intentional, reflective teachers who incorporate best practices in teaching in higher education. Finally, the program allows faculty members the opportunity to foster relationships with other faculty members outside of their home departments who are dedicated to improving their teaching.

Thank a Teacher

The NC State Thank a Teacher program was created in Fall 2010 to give students the opportunity to thank NC State instructors who have gone above and beyond to make a positive impact on their students’ lives. The program continues to grow. In 2012, the Office of Faculty Development received over 700 submissions from students.

Office of Faculty Development

The Office of Faculty Development (OFD) was established as part of

the Office of the Provost in August 2008. OFD assumed important

functions of the former Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning

and offers programs addressing teaching and learning and other

areas of faculty work, alone or in conjunction with other NC State

offices.

The Office aims to connect faculty members to vital information and

resources while providing the knowledge and skills needed to grow,

excel, and succeed in all realms of faculty responsibility. We strive to

provide resources for all faculty members on campus, regardless of

their discipline or tenure status.

OFD offers a wide variety of programming, including workshops on

topics pertinent to faculty success. Additionally, OFD offers reading

circles, small groups that provide colleagues the opportunity to share

ideas about teaching and learning in an informal setting with peers

from across the university. For participants looking for a more

intensive experience, OFD offers the Certificate of Reflective

Teaching Program, the Peer Coaching Program, the Assistant

Professors Community, and Community Engaged Faculty Fellows.

OFD also facilitates several faculty recognition programs, including

the Thank a Teacher Program and the University Teaching Awards.

Each year, OFD sponsors a Summer Institute, New Faculty

Orientation, and the Teaching and Learning Symposium.
