Key words: English vocabulary mastery, Magic matchbox game

English vocabulary is one of the elements in the language which is cannot

be separated from teaching English because it links the listening, speaking,

reading and writing skill. The students who have lack of English vocabulary

mastery find the difficulties in understanding English. They feel difficult to share

their idea about the material because they do not know how to apply it in English.

In teaching process, teacher has to choose the appropriate media based on the

student’s condition, aim of teaching, and the material. Magic matchbox game is

one of the media of teaching can make the students more interested and

motivated.

The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant

difference in the English vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SDN

Wilalung 02 Demak in academic year 2014/2015 between before and after being

taught by using magic matchbox game.

Design of this research is an experimental research using single group. The

population of this research is the fifth grade students of SDN Wilalung 02 Demak

in academic year 2014/2015. The subject of this research is the students in the

fifth grade, which consist of twenty students. The research instrument is used by

the writer is test. The form of the test is multiple choices and consists of twenty

items.

The result of this research, it was found that the English vocabulary mastery

of the fifth grade students of SDN Wilalung 02 Demak in academic year

2014/2015 before being taught by using magic matchbox game was sufficient.

The mean is 63.7, and the standard deviation is 13.95. Meanwhile, the English

vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SDN Wilalung 02 Demak in

academic year 2014/2015after being taught by using magic matchbox game was

categorized as very good. The mean is 79.2and standard deviation is 11.04.

Moreover the calculation of t-observation (to) 9.81was higher than t-table (tt)

2.093in level of significance 5%. It means that there is significance difference

between the English vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SDN

Wilalung 02 Demak in academic year 2014/2015before and after being taught by

using magic matchbox game.

Based on the result above, the writer suggested that the English teacher is

expected to be able to use magic matchbox game as an alternative media to teach

the students in English vocabulary mastery. The teachers are suggested to use

magic matchbox game as one of media to get the students’ attention and

enthusiasm in teaching learning process.

Kosakata bahasa Inggris adalah salah satu unsur dalam bahasa yang

tidak dapat di pisahkan dari pengajaran bahasa Inggris karena kosakata bahasa

Inggris menghubungkan kemampuan dalam mendengarkan, berbicara, membaca

dan menulis. Siswa yang memiliki penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris yang

kurang menemukan beberapa kesulitan dalam memahami bahasa Inggris. Mereka

kesulitan dalam mengungkapkan gagasan mereka yang berkaitan dengan materi

karena mereka tidak mengetahui bagaimana menerapkannya dalam bahasa

Inggris.Dalam proses mengajar, guru harus memilih media yang sesuai

berdasarkan kondisi siswa, tujuan pengajaran dan materi pelajaran. Magic match

box game adalah salah satu media pengajaran yang dapat membuat siswa lebih

tertarik dan termotivasi.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada atau tidak

perbedaan yang signifikan antara penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa kelas

lima SDN Wilalung 02 tahun ajaran 2014/2015 sebelum dan sesudah diajar

menggunakan magic match box game.

Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen dengan menggunakan

kelompok tunggal.Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas lima SDN

Wilalung 02 tahun ajaran 2014/2015.Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa di kelas

lima yang terdiri dari 20siswa. Instrument penelitian yang digunakan oleh penulis

adalah tes.Bentuk tes tersebut yaitu pilihan ganda dan terdiri dari dua puluh soal.

Hasil penelitian ini, telah ditemukan bahwa penguasaan kosa kata bahasa

Inggris siswa kelas lima SDN Wilalung 02 Demak tahun ajaran 2014/2015

sebelum diajar menggunakan magic match box game dikategorikan cukup. Nilai

rata-rata adalah 63.7 dan standar deviasi adalah 13.95. Sementara itu, penguasaan

kosa kata bahasa Inggris kelas lima SDN Wilalung 02 Demak tahun ajaran

2014/2015 sesudah diajar menggunakan magic match box game dikategorikan

sangat baik. Nilai rata-rata adalah 79.2 dan standar deviasi adalah 11.04.

Perhitungan t-observation (to) 9.81 lebih tinggi dari t-table (tt) 2.093 dengan

tingkat signifikan 5%. Ini berarti bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara

penguasaan kosa kata bahasa Inggris kelas lima SDN Wilalung 02 Demak tahun

ajaran 2014/2015 sebelum dan sesudah diajar dengan magic match box game.

Berdasarkan hasil diatas, penulis menyarankan agar guru bahasa Inggris

mampu menggunakan magic matchbox game sebagai media alternative untuk

mengajar kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa. Guru disarankan untuk menggunakan

magic matchbox game sebagai salah satu media untuk menarik perhatian dan

semangat siswa dalam proses pembelajaran.
