PAPER CHAIN STEM CHALLENGEMaterials for each group of 2-3 students: • 2 pieces of construction paper • 1 pair of scissors • 1 ruler • 1 strip of masking tape measuring 12 inches long
Instructions: • Give each group the materials listed above. Allow
students approximately 10 minutes to plan their design individually and as a team. Use the included planning page.
• Students will have 30 minutes to make the longest paper chain possible using only the materials provided.
• At the end of the 30 minute time limit have two students from each group come to the front of the classroom to have their chain measured. One student will hold each end of the chain while the teacher measures.
• If the chain breaks during the measurement process the students in the group must decide which of the broken sides they want measured.
• The team with the longest paper chain will be declared the winner.

Dear Students,
Using only the materials listed below you and your team of engineers will need to build a paper chain. You will have 10 minutes to plan your design individually and 10 minutes to plan as a team. You will have 30 minutes to construct your paper chain. At the end of the 30 minute time limit your chain will be measured. If the chain breaks during the measurement process only the part of your choice will be measured. The team with the longest paper chain will be declared the winner.
