SEASON REVIEW

52010-11 GEORGIA STATE BASKETBALL

Game 1: Nov. 12, 2010, 5:00 p.m.GEORGIA TECH 66, GEORGIA STATE 56Atlanta, Ga. (Alexander Memorial Coliseum) Georgia State’s season-opener saw the Panthers bow to Georg ia Tech, 66-56, in the 34th meeting of the two down-town schools Friday evening at Alexander Memorial Coliseum before 1,930 on the campus of Tech. Georgia State trailed 35-20 at the break, but rallied to outscore the host Yellow Jackets, 36-31, in the second half. The key stretch of the game came in the final four minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second half. Tech held a 27-18 nine-point advantage with 3:54 in the half when they went on a 8-2 run to take the 35-20 halftime lead. They came out with a 9-2 start in the second half to open a 44-22 advantage at 16:32 that State whittled away at from that point on. Perhaps the key stat of the game was GSU’s 30 turnovers, 21 in the first half, that hindered the offensive production. Tech had 21 turnovers. Georgia State held a 37-34 rebounding advantage against the taller Yellow Jackets and blocked seven shots. Tech got to the free throw line 14 times, while GSU never saw the line until 6:34 left in the game and ended with three attempts. GSU shot 45.5% with five treys, while Tech shot 44.4% with three treys. Tech had 15 steals on defense, State had 12 steals. Junior forward Chan Harris led GSU with 15 rebounds and 12 points and three blocks. Freshman guard Kendra Long made her first game in the blue and white memorable coming off the bench with 13 points, 10 in the second half, with three-of-six made outside the arc. Senior wing Angelique Burtts netted 12 points. Sophomore center Cody Paulk had eight points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. “I guess the positive in a loss is that we kept fighting until the end and we executed a whole lot better in the second half,” said new head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. “We turned the ball over way too much, especially in the first half, and we will continue to concentrate on taking care of the ball. Those turnovers cost us a ton of possessions with no shot attempted and limited our chances to score.”

Game 2: Nov. 21, 2010, 3 p.m.GEORGIA STATE 70, STETSON 61DeLand, Fla. (Edmunds Center) DeLand, FL - Georgia State earned the first win under new head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener with a 70-61 victory on Sunday afternoon at Stetson. Angelique Burtts had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, as did Chan Harris with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Traci Haltiwanger hit four three-point shots and added 15 points to the attack. Haltiwanger’s 15 points tied her personal-best for a game. Georgia State (1-1) shot 55.9% in the second half and 49.2% for the game, while having a 46-33 rebound advantage in the road win. The Panthers had 18 offensive rebounds. The visiting Panthers made 5-of-8 three-point shots in the second half and 6-of-13 total for the game. GSU pounded the ball inside and scored 40 of its 70 points in the paint. “I am happy for the team and it is always great to get any win on the road,” veteran head coach Baldwin-Tener said. “We started the game strong today, then hit the drought at the end of the first half. But, we did what we needed to do in the second half and played better.” “Angelique had big plays when we needed them this after-noon,” coach added. “Getting the rebound advantage and the 18 offensive rebounds is pleasing. But, I am not pleased with the turnover total (21) because that is still too many.” Georgia State hit seven of its first 10 shots and nine of its first 14 shots in building its early lead. GSU grew a 12-9 advantage to 26-13 with a 14-4 run with 8:47 to play in the opening half. But, the Panther missed their final nine shots of the half, coupled with the turnovers and Stetson closed to 26-24 at halftime. In the second half, GSU held a 38-32 lead when Stetson rallied to tie at 38 with 14:11 to play. GSU responded with a 7-0 advantage at 11:47. The visiting Panthers had nine-point leads twice during the 10-to-five minute span, when Stetson made a rare four-point play to make it 50-45 with 4:46 on the clock. A Haltiwanger three-pointer and a Burtts follow made it 63-53 with 3:27 and GSU finished off the win. GEORGIA STATE 70 (1-1)Player .................... Game 3: Nov. 23, 2010 7:00 p.m. GEORGIA STATE 70, BETHUNE-COOKMAN 49Daytona Beach, Fla. (Moore Gymnasium) Daytona Beach, Fla. - Georgia State raced to a 70-49 win over Bethune-Cookman Tuesday night at Moore Gymnasium by shooting 58.8 percent for the game. The Panthers (2-1) were led by senior forward Angelique Burtts with her 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Junior redshirt forward Chan Harris added 19 points in just 23 minutes, to go with five rebounds and three blocked shots. In getting their second straight win on the Florida road trip, GSU hit 30-of-51 shots, while controlling the boards, 38-26. GSU’s defense had 11 steals and held Bethune-Cookman to 30% from the field. GSU gained control of the game by scoring the final 13 points of the first half in 3:51, to erase a 10-point B-C lead and take a 36-33 halftime lead. In the second half, GSU used another 12-0 run to go from a five-point lead of 45-40 with 14:45 to a 57-40 advantage with 9:37 left. “I am really pleased to pick up two road wins and the team responded well to the challenges,” said new head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. “Angelique had a big game to carry us tonight when Chan got into foul trouble and missed the final 15 minutes of the first half. I am not happy at all that we had 27 turnovers. We threw the ball away too many times unforced and we have got to correct that. The rebounding in our two wins has helped us overcome those turnovers.” Tonight, GSU led 8-6 and Harris had six of those eight points when her second foul at 15:04 sent her to the bench for the rest of the half. Bethune-Cookman went on a 13-0 run to open a 20-8 lead before GSU began to regroup without the six-foot-two Harris. The Panthers cut it to one-point at 22-21 with 7:40, but B-C burst back to a 33-23 lead at 3:51with an 11-2 streak. But, the rest of the half belonged to GSU and Burtts, who had 16 points in the first half to spark the 36-33 lead. With back-to-back wins and scoring 70 points in each, the Panthers extended the win streak to 15 straight games when scoring 70 or more points. The Panthers have outscored all three opponents in the second half this season, including tonight’s second-half domination of 34-16. GEORGIA STATE 70 (2-1)Player .................... Game 4: Nov. 27, 2010, 2:00 p.m.GEORGIA STATE 57, ALABAMA A&M 50Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia State Sports Arena) ATLANTA - Georgia State defeated Alabama A&M, 57-50, in the opening game to advance to the championship game of the GSU Thanksgiving Tournament. It was also the home coaching debut for GSU’s head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. Chan Harris scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots, while Angelique Burtts netted 13 points, hauled down 10 rebounds, made five steals and blocked four shots. Traci Haltiwanger contributed eight points, six rebounds and three steals. Cody Paulk added six rebounds, six blocks, five points and three steals. The third straight win for GSU (3-1) moves them into the Sunday championship game at 4 p.m. against Rice, from Conference USA, who defeated Mercer, 65-39, in the second game today. Mercer and A & M will play at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Georgia State’s defense sparked the win as the Panthers made 17 steals, blocked 13 shots, forced 25 turnovers and held A & M to just 21 percent shooting from the field. But, the Panthers didn’t capitalize as much as they could as a result of 27 turnovers of their own. GSU started well with a 12-4 lead just seven minutes into the game and led 19-9 with 5:45 in the first half. But, A & M rallied with a 16-4 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 25-23 with 1:00 left in the half. The teams went into halftime tied at 27. The host Panthers got baskets from four different players in a quick 9-0 burst to start the second half and pull away 36-27 in the first three minutes. A & M closed back to 37-32 at 14:22, but the Panthers went on a 12-4 streak to make it 49-36 with 5:05 to play in the game. A & M made one final run to close to 51-45 with 1:03 to play, but GSU made free throws to seal the win. Georgia State did control the rebounding advantage, 47-44, making it four-for-four in outrebounding their opponents this year. The Panthers blocked a season-high 13 shots, including a personal-best six by center Cody Paulk. GSU has outscored all four of its opponents in the second half this year as well.

Game 5: Nov. 28, 2010, 4 p.m.RICE 55, GEORGIA STATE 52Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia State Sports Arena) ATLANTA (Nov. 28) - In a game fitting of a champion-ship contest, Rice and GSU battled right to the wire with visiting Rice claiming a 55-52 win in the GSU Thanksgiving Tournament. Georgia State battled back to make it a two-point game at 54-52 with 1:48 to play. Rice misfired and GSU had a chance to tie or go-ahead, but missed on a three-point shot, got the rebound and missed a two-pointer with 30 seconds left. Rice turned the ball over again, but GSU had a turnover of its own with 12 seconds. Morgan Mayse made one of two free throws with 12 seconds left, leaving GSU one last chance for a tying shot. But, they couldn’t find the open shot and time ran out. Georgia State had a 42-40 rebound advantage, including 22 offensive boards, but Rice countered by making six three-point baskets in the first half. Rice (4-3) started the game strong, hitting 9-of-15 shots and 4-of-8 treys, to open a 22-17 lead just over eight minutes into the game. But, GSU responded and eventually gained the lead again at 32-31 with 50 seconds in the half. Rice’s D’Frantz Smart hit the Owls’ sixth three-pointer of the half to give them a 34-32 halftime lead. The visiting Owls led 42-39 with 10:46 in the game when their defense provided a couple steals and transition baskets as they stretched the lead to 10 at 49-39 with 8:55. However, GSU was ready with an answer and closed back to three at 51-48 with four minutes left in the game. That set the stage for the frantic four minutes to see who could get that last basket that was going to be the game winner. “Rice is a good, well-coached basketball team,” said Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. “They hit those outside shots in the first half and we had to make adjustments to stop that. It was disappointing to miss some of those final shots and especially frustrating not to get the last shot off in the final 10 seconds.” Rice’s tough early slate saw them lose to No. 2 Baylor and No. 8 Texas A & M. All-Tournament Team: Morgan Mayse, Rice; Angelique Burtts & Chan Harris, GSU; Whiquitta Tobar, Alabama A&M, Briana Williams, Mercer. Tournament MVP: Brianna Hypolite, Rice.

Game 6: Dec. 2, 2010, 7:00 p.m. UAB 50, GEORGIA STATE 41Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Georgia State coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener used the word frustrating multiple times in describing her team’s 50-41 loss to UAB Thursday night at the GSU Sports Arena. The Panthers’ new boss offered these bits of analysis: • “It is frustrating to hold a good team like UAB to 50 points and not really give yourself a chance to win.” • “It is frustrating to shoot 6-of-15 from the free throw line in a nine-point loss. • “Making 23 turnovers, with so many unforced errors like throwing the ball away or traveling, frustrates me.” • “I bet we missed seven or eight lay-ups tonight. That is frustrating.” Visiting UAB (4-3) from Conference USA pulled away from a 13-13 tie after the first 10 minutes of play to outscore host GSU (3-3) over the final 10 minutes of the half 13-7 to take a 26-20 lead into halftime. GSU was matching turnovers for shots in the first half as the host Panthers commited 15 first-half turnovers and got off only 16 shots. In the second half, UAB opened with a 7-0 run to make it 33-20 with 17:50 left. A three-point basket by Amanda Peter-son at 12:35 gave UAB its largest lead of the game at 42-24 with that 16-4 start to the second half. GSU re-grouped and made a rally, getting it back to 45-35 with 7:16 left to play, but could never mount another serious rally in that final seven minutes. UAB was led by Amber Jones, who scored 14 points in 25 minutes coming off the bench. Peterson’s three treys gave her nine points and guard Khalilah Watson added nine more for the Blazers. GSU had no one in double figures as Chan Harris topped the stats with nine points and 10 rebounds. Leading scorer Angelique Burtts did not start for the first time in her career at GSU for team discipline and scored just seven points in 22 minutes. Georgia State did end up with a 35-33 rebounding advan-tage, but gave up 14 offensive rebounds to also frustrate the Panthers head coach. GSU did shoot 41% from the field and held UAB to 35%, but the turnovers cost the Panthers too few attempted shots. UAB 50 (4-3)Player .................... SEASON REVIEW

72010-11 GEORGIA STATE BASKETBALL

Game 7: Dec. 11, 2010, 5:30 p.m. WESTERN CAROLINA 51, GEORGIA STATE 37Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Shooting just 21% for the game, Georgia State lost to Western Carolina, 51-37, on Saturday evening at the GSU Sports Arena. Playing without their injured main scorer and rebounder, GSU still outshot visiting WCU, 57-41, but could make just 12 of those 57 shots. The Panthers shot 21.2% in the first half and then it actually got a little worse in the second half, mak-ing just 20.8% (5-of-24). Six-foot-two junior Chan Harris, who averages 14 points and 10.7 rebounds, while leading the conference in blocked shots, sat out the game with a foot injury. Western Carolina knocked down 45% of its shots in the first half to open a 27-16 lead, and even though the Catamounts went almost the first six minutes of the second half without scoring, still kept a double-digit lead the whole second half. Georgia State (3-4) got 11 points and eight rebounds from Angelique Burtts, but she shot just 2-of-16 from the field with 7-of-8 free throws. Sophomore center Cody Paulk added 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Western Carolina (2-6) got 12 points from Kaila’Shea Menendez, 11 points from Diamond Hunnicutt and 11 points from Emily Clarke. Caitlin Hollifield’s 10 rebounds led them in that category. Georgia State’s defense forced 28 turnovers and had 13 steals to give themselves a chance today, but the cold shoot-ing hurt that effort. “My goodness, we took bad shots today and struggled on of-fense from start to finish,” coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener said. “I know having Chan out threw us off a little, but we have got to execute much better than we did today. And, we are capable of that so we will work our way back from this.” GSU shot just 7-of-33 in the first half, plus 0-2 from the free thow line while WCU hit 9-of-20 and 5-of-8 to open its haltime lead.

Game 8: Dec. 16, 2010, 7:00 p.m. GEORGIA STATE 59, JACKSONVILLE STATE 47Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Trailing by 11 points at 36-25 with 13:50 to play, Georgia State upped the tempo for a furious 34-11 finish the rest of the game to defeat Jacksonville State, 59-47, Thursday night at the GSU Sports Arena. Visiting Jacksonville State led 25-19 at halftime and came back out to build the lead to those 11 points six minutes into the half. But, the host Panthers stepped up the offense and defense to score 11 straight points in five minutes and tie the game at 36 with 8:42 left. JSU re-gained the lead at 39-36 with 8:16 left, but the hustling Panther defense sparked a transition game that led to a run of 11-2 to give GSU control at 47-41 at 3:41. JSU’s last answer was a trey from Brittany Wiley at 2:40 to cut it back to 47-44. It was all GSU over the final 2:40 with a 12-3 run. GSU (4-4) was ranked in the top 20 in the nation in field goal defense and blocks and excelled in that again tonight by holding JSU to 28.8%, blocking 7 shots, forcing 27 turnovers and making 17 steals. The 47 points marks a sixth straight opponent held to 55 or fewer points. Freshman guard Kendra Long led GSU with 16 points, in-cluding five-of-seven outside the three-point arc. Chan Harris returned after missing the last game and added 12 points and six rebounds. Guard Tiffany Anderson added 10 more points in subbing for discipline-benched leading scorer Angelique Burtts. Guard Jerlisa Taylor came off the bench to add eight assists and six points. The Panthers also got a boost from re-turning veteran center Marcquitta Head, back after two years, as she provided energy with six points, four rebounds, two steals and a block in her first 18 minutes. JSU (2-7) was led by Brittany Wiley’s 16 points and eight rebounds, while Danielle Beneby added 11 more points and six rebounds, to go with five assists and four steals. “I didn’t really yell at the team at halftime or anything, I just told them to do what we are suppposed to do and the shots will start falling in the second half,” said coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. And, she was right as GSU shot 13-of-24 for 54.2% in the second half.

Game 9: Dec. 18, 2010, 4:30 p.m. NICHOLLS STATE 72, GEORGIA STATE 63Thibodeaux, La. (Stopher Gym) Host Nicholls State made 11 three-point baskets and shot a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line to overcome Geor-gia State’s size advantage in claiming a 72-63 win. Georgia State, one of the top 25 defensive teams in the country allowing just 53 points a game, ran into a buzz saw today that scored 43 points in the first half alone with 7-of-11 treys in that stanza. The taller Panthers dominated the boards with a com-manding 56-22 rebound advantage, including 28 offensive rebounds. Nicholls State (4-6) won its third straight with Ali-sha Allen scoring 24 points and Ricshanda Bickham having 20 points and 10 assists. GSU (4-5) was led by a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds from Chan Harris. “I was very disappointed in our defensive effort in the first half,” said Coach Baldwin-Tener. “Once again, we had too many turnovers in the first half and dug ourselves a big hole to come back from. The game was close for most of the first half, tied at 24 with 6:45 left to go. It was still 27-26 with 6:00 in the half when hot Nicholls went on a 13-0 run to break it open at40-26 with 1:31 in the half. They led 43-29 at halftime. GSU fell behind by 22 points in the second half before clawing its way back to single digits with 4:07 left (66-58), then closed to seven with 52 seconds left, but that was as close as the Panthers could get. GSU got off 68 shots to 57 for Nicholls, but the Colonels 11-of-23 outside the arc were the big factor. GSU had more offensive rebounds than the shorter Colonels had all day, as Nicholls had no player over six-foot. GSU scored 46 of its points in the paint with its height advantage, but Nicholls got 21 points off 21 GSU turnovers.GSU, averaging 11 steals a game, had just five today. This was the last GSU game before the short holiday break as the team returns on Dec. 26 to prepare for the 17th annual GSU Invitational.GEORGIA STATE 63 (4-5)

Game 11: Dec. 30, 2010, 4:00 p.m. HAMPTON 74, GEORGIA STATE 44Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia State Sports Arena) Hampton shot 61 percent in the second half and made nine three-point baskets to roll to a 74-44 win over Georgia State in the championship game. Tournament MVP Quanneisha Perry’s 17 points and seven rebounds fueled Hampton’s seventh straight win. The Pirates (8-4) shot 14-of-23 in the second half, including 6-of-9 out-side the three-point line. They converted 19-of-23 free throws.GSU, who came in off a 91-point game yesterday, shot just 28 percent in the second half (10-of-35) and 32 percent in the game. GSU did have a 37-34 rebound advantage, sparked with 16 offensive rebounds. The turning point of the game came in the final five minutes of the first half. A GSU basket by Chan Harris cut Hampton’s lead to 21-17 at that point. But, a Hampton 7-0 run, start-ing with a trey from Warner, made it 28-17. The half ended with another trey from Jericka Jenkins of Hampton to finish a 10-2 run in those final five minutes and give HU a 31-19 halftime lead. When the Pirates started the second half with two more quick three-point baskets from the same duo of Warner and Jenkins, the lead grew to 37-19 and GSU could never get closer than 15 points on a pair of occasions with six minutes to play at 55-40 with 5:55. Hampton then outscored GSU 19-4 over the final six minutes of the game to post the largest lead of the game. “I am disappointed in losing, but more disappointed that we can’t put two good games together yet this year,” said head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. In addition to tournament MVP Quanneisha Perry of Hampton, the all-tournament team includes Melanie Warner of Hampton, Chan Harris and Angelique Burtts of GSU, DeAngela Sword of Troy and Ka’Neshia Smith of Mississippi Valley State. Troy defeated Mississippi Valley State, 62-56, in the consolation game today.

Game 13: Jan. 6, 2011, 7:00 p.m. DREXEL 56 , GEORGIA STATE 46Philadelphia, Pa. (Daskalakis Center) Georgia State led the first 30 minutes, but host Drexel made a come-from-rally to claim a 56-46 win in a Colonial Athletic Association win on Thursday night. Visiting Georgia State opened up an early nine-point lead at 15-6 after 11 minutes played as they held Drexel without a trey. GSU led by eight points at 25-17 with 15 seconds in the half, but Drexel got a free throw with five seconds, got an offensive rebound on the second miss and made a basket at the buzzer to close to 25-20 GSU at the break. GSU’s defense continued to stifle Drexel in the second half and the Panthers led 36-29 with 12:35 to play in the game. Drexel’s Hollie Marshon drained a three-pointer with 10:20 and then made a lay-up at 9:42 to give Drexel its first lead of the game at 39-38. Drexel clung to a 46-42 lead with less than four minutes to play when Taylor Wooten scored in the paint at 3:46 and then Marshon made another trey with 3:05 to put the Dragons up 51-42 with three minutes left and secure the win. GSU (5-8, 0-2) was led in scoring by freshman guard Kendra Long’s 17 points with five three-point baskets, plus 16 points and eight rebounds from junior post player Chan Harris. GSU held a 38-33 rebound advantage for the game, but had 20 turnovers to cost themselves possessions. After shooting 47.6 percent in leading in the first half, GSU shot just 25 per-cent in the second half and 35 percent for the game. Drexel (9-4, 1-1) knocked down nine three-point baskets, but actually shot 33 percent beyond the arc, 10 percent lower than their NCAA best 43 percent. Drexel’s star was Hollie Marshon’s ignition when she came off the bench to score 18 points with 4-of-7 three-pointers. Kamile Nacickaite added 12 points. “A key stretch came right around the 30-minute mark where we had four straight possession turnovers and showed a lack of communication about the same time in giving some open lay-ups, said coach Baldwin-Tener.”

In a see-saw game with eight lead changes and six ties, ODU (10-5, 4-0) stepped up with the final run. GSU had three turnovers and three missed shots down the stretch, while ODU got three lay-ups and two free throws from Alena Voronina to re-gain the lead. GSU had gained the lead with 7:38 to play and held it until Voronina’s free throws with 1:20 put ODU on top. GSU (6-9, 1-3) was led by freshman guard Kendra Long’s 21 points. Angelique Burtts added 14 points, while Chan Har-ris contributed 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a block. Tiffany Anderson also scored 12 points. GSU hit 8-of-16 three-point baskets against the team that entered the game as the best in the nation in defending the three (20.7%). “I guess you could say we played well enough at times to win, but obviously we didn’t,” said head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. “We made the crucial mistakes at the end and you can’t do that against first-place teams and win. We hadn’t been in crucial end-of-game situations like this and I think the veteran ODU team has and responded.” GSU’s defense kept them in the game with 24 turnovers forced and 15 steals. But, the Panthers were just as generous in turning the ball over 19 times to lead to 30 of ODU’s 66 points today. After GSU led 14-11 eight minutes into the game, ODU went on a 20-6 run to take its largest lead of the game at 31-20 with four minutes left in the half. Back-to-back treys by Long and Burtts brought GSU right back into the game. A Vororina lay-up with eight seconds left gave ODU a 36-31 halftime lead. The game was moved up to 5 p.m. due to the week-long ice storm that paralyzed Atlanta, limiting attendance and spirit from a pep band, but more than 300 braved the weather.

Game 16: Jan. 16, 2011, 2:00 p.m. GEORGIA STATE 58 , TOWSON 53Towson, Md. (Towson Center) Georgia State played tough defense and made some key plays down the stretch to post a 58-53 Colonial Athletic As-sociation win over Towson. In a game with 10 lead changes and six ties, visiting GSU forged ahead with 10:03 and kept the lead the rest of the way, despite Towson closing within one point two more times, the last with 55 seconds. Chan Harris made a key basket with 31 seconds left to put GSU up, 55-52. After Simona Petronyte made a free throw with 6.2 seconds to make it 55-53, the second miss included a lane violation and gave the ball to GSU. A full-court pass to Angelique Burtts resulted in a basket and free throw with 4.2 seconds for the final margin. GSU (7-9, 2-3) got the eighth double-double of the year from junior forward Chan Harris with 12 points and 12 rebounds, to go with two more blocked shots for the CAA leader. Sophomore guard Tiffany Anderson was a huge spark with 12 points and seven rebounds before fouling out with 8:43 to play. Georgia State shot 50% from the field (26-of-52), but just 4-of-13 from the free throw line. GSU held Towson to 17-of-56 (30.4%) as the Tigers converted 16-of-25 free throws. GSU held a 44-30 rebound advantage. Towson (7-9, 1-4) got 14 points and 11 rebounds from Dovile Miliauskaite. “I will take a road win any time, any way, any place,” said head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener on her first CAA road win. The visiting Panthers made their first five shots of the game to open a 13-7 lead with just over five and a half minutes in the game. But, Towson had a 6-0 run to tie the game at 13 at 11:58. Towson’s 6-0 at the end of the half gave them the lead.GSU once again opened a pair of four-point leads at 21-17 (7:22) and 22-18 (5:16). But, once again Towson had a 6-0 over the final five minutes as GSU went scoreless to take their two-point halftime lead. There were three ties and three lead changes in the first half.

Game 17: Jan. 20, 2011, 7:00 p.m. NORTHEASTERN 72, GEORGIA STATE 48Atlanta, Ga. (GSU Sports Arena) Northeastern overcame a five-point halftime deficit to Geor-gia State with a barrage of three-point baskets in the second half to win, 72-48, in a Colonial Athletic Association game. Northeastern went on a run with 8-of-11 three-point baskets in the second half to turn a 37-35 lead into a 62-45 lead in a ten-minute span. The Huskies finished with 10 three-point baskets on the night, their second most of the season. Georgia State, who had won two of its previous three, opened the 31-26 halftime lead by forcing 12 turnovers and making eight steals. Northeastern created its 46-17 second half scoring advantage with a surprising 50-rebound night, a season-high total for a team that averaged just 35 boards a game to rank next-to-last in the CAA. Of those 50 rebounds, 20 came on the offensive end. GSU, a team that averages six more rebounds a game than its opponents total on the season, was dominated by 18 rebounds (50-32) tonight. Northeastern (7-10, 2-4) was led by Deanna Kerkhof’s 16 points that included 4-of-7 outside the arc. Afreyea Tolbert came off the bench to add 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Northeastern added to its advantage by making 14-of-17 free throws (82.4%). Georgia State (7-10, 2-4) had only one player in double figures as Angelique Burtts netted 11 points on 5-of-17 shoot-ing. The Panthers shot just 26.9% in the second half and 32.3% for the game. “Northeastern crashed the glass, got the loose balls, and shot their open three-point shots well,” said coach Baldwin-Tener. We must play a lot better or it will be a long season, so I hope the team decides they want to win.” The game had seven lead changes and was tied six times. Georgia State’s largest lead of the game was seven points at 29-22 with 3:13 to go in the first half. GSU led for the final seven minutes of the first half and the start of the second half before Northeastern took the lead again at 33-32 with 17:55 left in the game.

Game 18: Jan. 23, 2011, 2:00 p.m. DELAWARE 50, GEORGIA STATE 46Atlanta, Ga. (GSU Sports Arena) Georgia State and Delaware swapped the lead six times, were tied three times and it was still a one-point game several times in the final two minutes before the visiting Blue Hens edged away with free throws for a 50-46 win.. Leading 47-46, Delaware’s Danielle Parker cashed in on a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 17.3 seconds to put UD up 49-46 as GSU’s final three-point attempt then bounced off the rim with one-second left on the clock. UD added a final free throw for its win. Georgia State (7-11, 2-5) had led at the half, 24-21, and the first 11 minutes of the second half before a trey by Delaware’s Lauren Carra at 8:40 edged the Blue Hens back into the lead, 38-36, for the first time since 2:32 in the first half at 18-17. Carra led Delaware (11-7, 4-3) with 16 points as their only double-figure scorer. GSU was led by Tiffany Anderson, who fouled out in the closing minutes on an offensive foul making a pass, with 10 points. Angelique Burtts had 11 points, but was just 4-of-16 from the field. Over the final six minutes, the Delaware lead was at one-point and GSU had four differ-ent possessions with a chance to re-gain the lead, but could never capitalize. Down 45-44 in the final two minutes, GSU’s Tiffany An-derson was called for a key offensive foul under the basket making a pass and fouled out of the game with 1:13. Two free throws by Jocelyn Bailey put UD up 47-44 at 46 seconds, but Burtts answered that with a basket with 22 seconds. That set up Parker’s eventual one-and-one free throw situation. Both teams struggled shooting today, with GSU 13-of-59 for 22 percent and Delaware 17-for-54 at 31 percent. GSU’s more misses helped Delaware claim a 47-41 rebound advantage. GSU shot well from the free throw line (17-for-22, 77.3%), but shot only two free throws over the final eight minutes, while Delaware hit 14-of-22 (63.6%) from the line with 12 free throws in that same eight-minute span, making eight of those 12. “We missed a lot of easy shots, especially in the first half, and you have to shoot better than we did today to win,” Baldwin-Tener said. “We had chances to win today, we shot our free throws better and the defense fought hard, but we hurt ourselves by missing a lot of makeable shots.”

SEASON REVIEW

112010-11 GEORGIA STATE BASKETBALL

Game 19: Jan. 27, 2011, 4:00 p.m. VCU 67, GEORGIA STATE 52 Richmond, Va. (Siegel Center) VCU’s women’s basketball team shot 52 percent, including 55 percent outside the arc, to turn back Georgia State, 67-52, Thursday afternoon at The Siegel Center. VCU, who features the nation’s #1 rebounder and #3 scorer in Courtney Hurt, found a new leader today as junior col-lege transfer guard Andrea Barbour scored a career-high 23 points on 7-of-11 field goals to double her 11-point per game average. Hurt, who averages 23.9 points and 13.2 rebounds, added “below-average” 18 points and nine rebounds today. The Rams (11-7, 6-2), who were 9th in the CAA in three-point baskets, made 5-of-9 outside the arc today. Georgia State (7-12, 2-6) was led by junior center Chan Harris with 19 points and seven rebounds. The host Rams jumped out early with a 10-0 run to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 13-5 lead six minutes into the game. They took a 14-7 lead to a 26-10 advantage with eight minutes to play in the opening half. A run of seven points by Chan Harris helped close the margin to 26-19 with 5:20 to go. But, VCU went on an 11-3 run and held a 37-22 halftime lead. The second half was a 30-30 tie, but the first half was too much for GSU to ever overcome. The Panthers were down 12 points six times in the second half, the last with 5:20 to play at 56-44, but never got closer. “They shot the ball well today outside and inside and we didn’t,” said Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. “We missed too many free throws and too many make-able baskets. And, then in the second half, we didn’t box out and hit the boards.”

Game 24: Feb. 13, 2011, 2:00 p.m. GEORGIA STATE 67, TOWSON 56Atlanta, Ga. (GSU Sports Arena) Georgia State won its third straight game by having all five starters score in double figures in a 67-56 win. Georgia State, which improves to 10-14 overall, 5-8 in CAA play, got double-double performances from two play-ers. Senior forward Angelique Burtts scored 17 points and grabbled 10 rebounds, while junior Chan Harris had her 10th double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore center Cody Paulk added 12 points and eight rebounds. Guards Kendra Long and Jerlisa Taylor contributed 14 and 10 points, respectively. Long hit three-of-four baskets outside the three-point arc to up her season total to 47 made. The host Panthers broke a 30-28 game wide open with a 9-0 start to the second half to make the score 39-28 six minutes into the half. They extended the run to 17-3 run to move ahead 47-31 with just under 10 minutes to go. Georgia State had 12 steals and forced 24 Towson turnovers to keep the tempo going. Visiting Towson shot just 25 percent in the second half and 31 percent for the game. GSU held a 44-43 rebound advantage. “Three wins in a row at this time of the year is nice, but I want to win the next three, too,” said head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. “The balanced scoring is the big difference with our team now from the start of the season. It is always harder to stop a team when all five players can score in double figures, and we’re getting that now.” Today’s win gave GSU a season sweep over Towson, fol-lowing a 58-53 decision in Baltimore on Jan. 16. Today’s game was a little extra special with it being Letter-winners’ Day and a day to honor two of the school’s national tournament teams at halftime. The 30th anniversary of the 1980-81 team brought back a group that went 28-5, was ranked in the top 20, and made the exclusive 24-team AIAW Tournament, the pre-cursor of the NCAA Women’s Tourna-ment. The 10th anniversary season was a reunion of the squad that went 24-7, won the conference tournament and marched on to the first of three NCAA Tournaments. “We had a good, supportive crowd today and it really helped us and gave us energy,” Baldwin-Tener said.

Game 27: Feb. 24, 2011, 1:00 p.m. JAMES MADISON 93, GEORGIA STATE 45Atlanta, Ga. (GSU Sports Arena) First-place James Madison (22-6, 15-1 CAA) won its 14th straight game with a 93-45 decision over Georgia State Thurs-day night at the GSU Sports Arena. The nation’s leading scorer, JMU guard Dawn Evans, led the way with 26 points and seven assists as the Dukes shot 51 percent for the game. Georgia State (10-17, 5-11 CAA) was cold on its return to its home court, shooting just 29 percent (18-of-62) with 25 turnovers. Sophomore center Cody Paulk led GSU with 12 points, nine rebounds and a blocked shot. This game was decided as quickly as it started. James Madison made seven of its first eight shots to take a 15-0 lead just four minutes into the game. GSU was 0-for-7 with three turnovers in those first four minutes. JMU had the lead up to 20 points for the first time at 35-15 with 7:02 to play and cruised into halftime with a 49-27 advantage. Madison shot 5.14% in the first half, making 18-of-35, plus 10-13 free throws, and commited just 4 turnovers. Evans had 16 in the first half. Evans final basket was a three-pointer at 6:23 that pushed her above her season average of 23.9. For JMU, it was a season-high in points, topping their 89 vs. William and Mary and the 48-point victory margin topped their 35-point win over Western Carolina. The second half belonged to the reserves as GSU’s bench logged 85 minutes and JMU’s bench played 83 minutes. “To sum it up, they played well; we were flat. They were aggressive, we were not,” said GSU head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. “No one competed very hard for us tonight and that is why the score is what it is.” The loss was a third straight for GSU and ended a three-game home CAA win streak. Game 28: Feb. 27, 2011, 2:00 p.m. GEORGIA STATE 57, NORTHEASTERN 44Boston, Mass. (Solomon Court) Georgia State defeated Northeastern, 57-44, Sunday after-noon at Solomon Court in the 1,000th all-time game in GSU women’s basketball history. Senior guard Traci Haltiwanger scored a career-best 17 points, while Angelique Burtts added 14 points and Cody Paulk contributed 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks in the win. Haltiwanger’s 21st double-figure game included 3-of-5 three-point baskets. Georgia State (11-17, 6-11) dominated the boards with a 44-23 rebound advantage, made 13 steals and blocked five shots in allowing a season-low 44 points. The Panthers limited Northeastern to just 32 percent shoot-ing from the field and forced 22 NU turnovers. GSU also hit 79% of its free throws, 11-of-14, in today’s win. GSU was cruising towards a win with a 14-point lead at 37-23 with 16:40 to play when the host Huskies went on a 11-2 run, sparked by a pair of Kerkhof treys, to close to 39-34 with 11:21. A trey by Kendra Long and lay-up by Haltiwan-ger opened it back to 10 points a 44-34 with 7:34. GSU was hampered in that span as Burtts picked up her fourth foul with 17:15 still to play and had to retreat to the bench for an extended time. The Huskies put together a 9-0 run, paced by free throws, to close o 44-43 with 3:44 to go. A pair of free throws by Haltiwanger at 3:42, a put-back by Paulk and a driving bank shot by Burtts opened it back to 52-44 with 1:06 left. Northeastern (8-20, 3-14) was led by five three-point baskets and 15 points by Deanna Kerkhof. In the first half, Georgia State used a 15-0 run to erase a three-point deficit at 9-6 with 16:37 on the clock into a 21-9 lead at 9:22. A pair of treys and an old-fashioned three-point play gave Haltiwanger nine points during that run. GSU had its largest lead of the first half of 16 points at 33-17 before Northeastern hit a pair of free throws to close to 33-19 at the halftime break. “We played aggressively today and our defense was especially tough in the first half,” said Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener.”I was proud of the effort and spirit we showed.”

Game 29: Mar. 2, 2011, 7:00 p.m. VCU 69, GEORGIA STATE 57 Atlanta, Ga. (GSU Sports Arena) VCU shot a school-record 45 free throws to come from behind and defeat Georgia State, 69-57, Wednesday night. Georgia State (11-18, 6-12) actually controlled and led most of the game before the foul trouble ended up costing the Panthers. GSU got the lead in the first half at 3:24 and kept it until a tie at 47 with nine minutes left in the game. GSU regained the lead, 50-49, and didn’t lose it until VCU scored with 3:11 left to move ahead, 57-55. The Panthers were substituting regularly as the 33 fouls called kept most of the starters in danger. Three players fouled out, including both seniors in their final game, and three play-ers had four fouls. GSU, meanwhile, shot just 14 free throws and made nine. VCU was called for only 16 fouls. VCU (18-10, 13-5) got a CAA-record 23rd double-double effort from Courtney Hurt with 32 points, despite shooting just 7-of-24, and 10 rebounds. She leads the NCAA in rebounding and is fourth in the nation in scoring. GSU held a 41-39 rebound advantage and shot 44% from the field tonight. Georgia State held VCU to 26.2 percent from the field and just 22.9 in the first half when GSU took a 28-26 lead into the locker room. The Panthers built the lead to seven points in the first five minutes of the second half and led by eight at 45-37 with 12:22 to play and at 47-40 with 11:23 when VCU began a run. The Rams tied the game at 47 with nine minutes left, but GSU rallied to lead by four at 53-49 with 6:00 to play. GSU held its last lead at 55-53 with 4:25 left before Hurt tied the game at 55 with 4:10 left. The Rams outscored the depleted Panthers 14-2 over the final four minutes. In the second half alone, VCU shot 26-of-35 free throws and made only seven field goals. GSU was called for almost a foul a minute during the game, having their first eight before the first eight minutes of the game was played. And, the fouls were just on the defensive end as GSU had eight offensive fouls. “I am proud of how hard we played tonight, but we were certainly out of our rhythm with all the fouls. Usually when you hold a team to 26 percent, you are talking about a win.”

SEASON REVIEW

152010-11 GEORGIA STATE BASKETBALL

Game 30: March 10, 2011, 12:00 p.m. GEORGIA STATE 68, GEORGE MASON 64Upper Marlboro, Md. (Show Place Arena) Georgia State earned a 68-64 win over George Mason in the opening round game of the CAA Championship. GSU seniors Traci Haltiwanger and Angelique Burtts led the way. Haltiwanger scored 10 of GSU’s first 13 points of the game and ended with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Burtts then finished the game strong and made two key free throws with seven seconds left in producing 15 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Georgia State (12-18) has won five of its last nine games. No. 9-seed GSU jumped out quickly today to a 13-5 lead after four and a half minutes before Mason got back within one point at 20-19 with 10 minutes left in the half. GSU picked up the tempo and went on a strong 11-0 run to make it 31-19 at 7:37. After a three-point basket just ahead of the first-half buzzer from CAA All-Freshman guard Kendra Long, GSU took a 38-26 lead into halftime. GSU was cruising along with a double-figure lead through the first eight minutes of the second half. Mason crawled back to 49-44 at the 10-minute mark, but GSU got it back to double figures at 56-46 at 8:54. GSU was still leading 64-54 with only 3:19 left, but Mason was not going to go out quietly. The Patriots’ Taleia Moton led a surge that brought her team back to 64-62 with 41.9 seconds left. Mason quickly fouled to send Jerlisa Taylor to the free throw line and she made both ends of the one-and-one situation to make it 66-62. Burtts missed a pair of free throws with 14.7 seconds, and Mason’s Brittany Eley scored to make it 66-64 with 7.9 ticks left on the scoreboard. This time, Burtts made both free throws when fouled with seven seconds left, and the Panthers had their first tournament win since 2006. GSU had a 48-41 rebounding advantage, including 19 of-fensive boards. The Panthers shot 44 percent in the first half in building the 12-point lead and finished at 38 percent on the day while making 16-of-24 free throws. Mason could shoot only 25 percent in the opening half and finished at 35 percent. “I think the key today was the way we started the game,” said first-year GSU coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. “We were aggressive on both ends most of the game and came out with a lot of energy today. I give Mason credit for not quitting and fighting back. But, we came ready to play and played team basketball today.”

Game 31: March 11, 2011, 12:00 p.m. JAMES MADISON 70, GEORGIA STATE 51Upper Marlboro, Md. (Show Place Arena) Georgia State dropped a 70-51 decision to No. 1 James Madison in the quarterfinal round of the CAA Championships Friday afternoon at The Show Place Arena. Chan Harris and Angelique Burtts each scored 15 points as State finishes the season 12-19. Cody Paulk led the Panthers with seven rebounds, adding six points. James Madison (24-7) moves on to the semifinal round on Saturday. Four Dukes scored in double figures with six-foot-four Lauren Jiminez netting 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Dawn Evans added 14 points despite shooting just 4-of-16. Evans, the CAA Player of the Year who averages 23.6 per game, was just 1-for-9 from outside the three-point line and finished the game with five turnovers. It was a four-point game with 4:20 left in the first half at 22-18 when James Madison made its biggest move of the game and went on a 13-1 run to close the half, securing 35-19 lead into halftime. Georgia State shot just 22.6 percent in the first half (7-of-31) and 30.5 percent for the game (18-of-59). James Madison took 12 fewer shots, but made 19-of-47. The Dukes won the game at the free throw stripe with 27 of 40 made attempts. JMU held a 47-35 rebound advantage, thanks to GSU’s 41 missed shots. GSU forced 23 JMU turnovers and had 11 steals in a pressure defense, but didn’t capitalize often enough on turnovers. “I am proud of how hard we played and competed, but we sure had a hard time today putting the ball in the basket,” said head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. “We had a lot of makeable, routine shots that didn’t go in today,” she added. James Madison is certainly a good, quality ball club that takes advantage of your mistakes.
