IntroductionThe human power submarine is a very

comprehensive project that involves the use of concepts learned from different courses of the mechanical engineering bachelor’s degree. The project consist in the design and analysis of a human powered submarine. By doing this project the institution will increase its participation in international competitions and also will enhance the engineering education of its students.

ObjectivesDesign the hull of the free flooding marine

vehicle.Simulate the sub's hull using

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software.

Design a submarine propulsion system.Simulate the behavior of critical

components of the propulsion system.

3/24

Objectives

Design a stand for the vehicle’s driver to produce a more comfortable environment for him/ her, so that the person can deliver the propulsion power in a more efficient way.

Design the propeller arrangement that better suits the propulsion system selected for this application.

generating impeller.

The propulsive power must be provided by the human.

Fully encapsulates one occupant.

Operates completely under the surface of the water.

Problem StatementDesign and simulate a free flooding (water

filed) marine vehicle that fully encapsulates one occupant, that operates beneath the water and uses a propeller system to generate its thrust underwater. The propulsive power of the marine vehicle will be supplied by the vehicle’s occupant at the time it is used.

Hull Design Goal Statement:

Design the hull of the free flooding marine vehicle so that it produces the least amount of drag possible in the water to reach the desired design speed. The vehicles hull should have enough space to encapsulate one person, and the required internal components.

Simulate the vehicle's hull in the water using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software to understand the behavior of the fluid around it. 10/24

Hull Design Performance Specification:

The hull must work underwater. The hull must work filled with

water. The hull must have enough volume

to fit one occupant an all the required internal equipment.

11/24

Hull Design Performance Specification:

The hull’s shape must produce the least amount of resistance underwater.

The hull must remain stable at approxi-mately 10 to 15 ft underwater.

The hull design must meet all the safety features required by the International Submarine Races contestant's manual.

12/24

Hull Design Performance Specification:

The hull design must be feasible in terms of manufacturing and cost.

The material’s selected for design must resist the stresses developed by the internal components and the pilot’s internal movements.

Propulsion Mechanism Design Goal Statement:

Design a propulsion system that can convert efficiently the power output of the human being in to the propulsive thrust to reach the desired design speed.

Simulate the behavior of critical components of the propulsion system using Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

20/24

Propulsion Mechanism Design Performance Specification:

The propulsion power must be provided exclusively by  the vehicle’s driver.

The propulsion system shall be directly coupled to the driver.

All power trains shall be direct-drive.If lubricants are used they must be

biodegradable, vegetable type.

Conclusion

Up to this phase we have proposed some design ideas , for the vehicle’s hull and propulsion mechanism and now we are ready to proceed with the analysis and selection phase. In addition we have define some important parameters needed for the hull’s design that are related to the vehicle’s internal components. Once the selection of this parts are completed we can proceed to analyze in more detail the propeller design.
