HOST Celebrates 5 Years! In mid-2012 we embarked on a SeaTeam initiative to assist the under privileged in the countries where SeaTeam operates. While initial contributions were overwhelming it was hard to imagine the impact that HOST would have and the continuing support we have enjoyed.

At the end of July contributions exceeded US$400,000! This generosity has enabled us to make meaningful changes and touch the lives of many of the less fortunate. HOSTS achievements include;

• Paid all staff salaries for the teachers and support staff at Gnanodaya School for leprosy affected with over 150 students for 5 years

• Performed major upgrades to St. Annes Orphanage for girls in Chennai including toilets, showers, kitchen facilities and bedding for the girls

• Operated Kanagi Nagar learning center, an afterschool class in the slum area in Chennai including building rental, salaries and meals for the kids for 3 years

• Provided scholarships for 5 students for Pre-Sea Training from the slums of Chennai. These boys are now sailing on SeaTeam ships

• Been the major sponsor of Precious Heritage Orphanage and School in Philippines providing around 65% of their funding for the last 5 years. The orphanage has been expanded and now houses 48 wards

• Sponsored one of the orphans college degree in Nautical Science. He is presently sailing onboard SeaTeam vessels as a cadet

• Made substantial donations for disaster release as well as other ad hoc donations to worthy causes

HOST is an achievement that all the staff of SeaTeam can truly be proud of. After 5 years we have proven that as a team our small contributions can have a big impact. We have several new projects planned including support of an orphanage in Russia and I am sure with the on-going support of our staff we will achieve even more in the next 5 years!

A Sailing to Rememberby Mrs Shruthi Murthy – MT Sea Bay

Waiting patiently, I get the call from sea to join my husband. My little angel’s happiness knew no limits like the oceans,

as she says I am going to my daddy’s ship”house”.

Our journey at sea begins from Le Havre, France and as the voyage progressed, we got a glimpse of what life at sea is all about.

Once onboard we were familiarized with the safety procedures onboard, emergency signals, lifeboats, where to report during emergencies just to name a few. Safety did seem to be the buzz word most of the times, but given the kind of cargo the vessel is carrying, traversing the waters safely did certainly cast aside any doubts I had as to why safety was so emphasized upon onboard.

We got a glimpse of the ship including the bridge, the nerve center and heart of the ship, the engine room when taken for a tour post joining. Given the sheer number of equipments and machinery there, I was sure that everyone onboard had their task cut out.

My little one did find her partner in crime onboard, thanks to the 3rd Engineer’s son Rayaan. They were quite the N-team onboard; “Naughty” team onboard or partners in crime. ;)

Kavya witnessed her first rainbow out of the blue on the bridge, unfortunately could not capture the moment in time, nevertheless the dazzle in her eyes knew no bounds. She did make a number of new friends onboard and this sailing has been quite an invaluable new learning experience for her, so much so that even the rough seas did not

scare her rather she learnt to balance herself on so called sea-saw ship.

She even prepared herself for a possible interaction with a visiting ISM Auditor when told by her dad that someone is coming to check her homework too, I should say she did well enough to receive a farewell momento from the auditor.

Things I witnessed at sea, the beautiful sun rising and setting on the horizon, the breath of fresh air, having the seagulls for company with no soul visible on the distant horizon, will be the moments I would always cherish.

We sailed across the seas for the 1st time. At the end of this journey we had lots of fond memories to take along with us. It was fun filled sea saw ride for my little angel, for me it was a pleasant journey to remember.

Being at home away from home, being part of family away from family, had to say it is a sailing to remember.

Shipboard famiy.

Kavya all smiles after a heads up from the Auditor for her homework.

Team MV Golden Deb the First.

Everybody is singing along with the tune of guitar and beat of the beatbox to some oldies but goodies songs for its maiden voyage.

On the 17th August 2017, from Quintana Ship Management finally the good lady MV Golden Deb was delivered to Owners and Manager

SeaTeam Management with the compliments of 21 officers and crew under the command of Capt. Wilson C. Rofuli and Chief Engineer Emmanuel F. Cristobal at Hong Kong Anchorage with the presence of our Senior Superintendent Ajit George. Even encountered difficulties with the previous senior officers of MV Q Deb but it is not a barrier from doing the job professionally even though it gives more effort and showing our Quality Safety Campaign that is reflecting our Team and Company with good employment. Many changes were made for this vessel. Planning were made to change the vessel’s name on the hull to doing the best with safety as the priority. Obstacles were present including the rainy weather but deck department is on its finest moves. Rain, strong winds and a little bit of swell cannot hinder the skills of Deck Department to get the job done. And now she is ready for her voyage carrying her new name “GOLDEN DEB” full speed ahead!!!

Additional Words

The distance is nothing; it is only the first step that is difficult.

Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.

Far and away, the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.

From a worldly point of view, there is no mistake so great as that of being always right.

International Yoga Day on Front Pumaby Capt. Abhijeet Kumbhavadekar, MT Front Puma

Yoga as we all know is an Indian body of knowledge which is about 10,000 years old. Though many think of yoga only as a physical

exercise where people twist, turn, stretch, in the most complex ways, these are actually only the most superficial aspect of this profound science of unfolding the infinite potentials of the human mind and soul. The science of yoga imbibes the complete essence of the Way of Life.

Yoga is a holistic way of life that combines all elements of ancient knowledge of yoga, to make a prayerful discipline uniting the body, mind and soul. Along with the series of simple, yet effective yoga postures and breathing techniques, a greater emphasis is placed on the inner experience of meditation, for the well-being of the mind and other hidden elements of human existence. It

Resilience is defined as a capacity to withstand stress and catastrophic encounters. It is the ability to steer the flimsy boat of one’s life across the storm-tossed sea which occasionally but inevitably confront us. Though everyone is born unique, we all possess certain traits that set us apart from the rest. These traits define who we are and how we respond to situations

If your tendency is to get angry or frustrated in that situation, there is a decent chance that you tend to get peeved with yourself or others when things do not go as planned. It also means that you are more likely to experience the ups and downs of life as stressful.

In the fight or flight situation, your heart beat increases above normal and tend to breathe fast causing less utilization of lungs capacity. That means the supply of oxygen to your blood is reduced than the normal and hence less oxygenated blood to

is believed when one is in harmony within; the journey through life becomes calmer, happier and more fulfilled.

Pranayama is the extension and control of one’s breath. Practicing proper techniques of breathing increases the lungs capacity which in turn can help bring more oxygen to the blood and brain, eventually helping control prana or the vital life energy. Pranayama also goes hand in hand with various yoga poses. The union of these two yogic principles is considered as the highest form of purification and self-discipline, covering both mind and body. Pranayama techniques also prepare us for a deeper experience of meditation.

brain. This will momentarily slow down your brain functions which in turn delays to come back to your normal self. By practicing yoga and mastering pranayama, one can achieve a strong body, full utilization of lungs capacity and balanced mental ability. The strong mind will be able to combat with any catastrophic incidents and deal with any level of stress. This way every body will be able to develop and improve self resilience.

Imagine what would happen if, instead of getting frustrated during your practice or stopping

mental and physical well-being and project the right image of our life and its values.

Yoga is great for building stress resilience. In view of the infinite benefits, Team MT Front Puma decided to embrace this ancient gift to humanity by celebrating International Yoga Day on 21st June 2017 and has been continued ever since. altogether, you embraced faltering and uncertainty. There is a good chance your body would relax, and your mind might begin to accept what is occurring in the present moment, rather than striving for “how things should be.”

Facing challenge and flowing with what is, rather than trying to force what is not, is the key to building stress resilience and increasing your health and happiness.

Yoga is clinically proved to help with all of those; to combat stress, boost self-esteem, improve your

Do not let your emotions take control of situations but learn to get a grip on them. This will help you stay centered and calm during challenging situations.

Last but not the least, breathe properly. Often largely ignored, breathing holds the key to a stress-free and positive life. Harness the true power of breath by learning breathing techniques that clears stress at physical, mental and emotional levels of our being. When you learn to breathe right, you get the tool to improve inter-personal relationships, and allow the charming aspects of our personality to shine.

The 1st Annual Conference in NakhodkaPrimorsk Shipping Corporation July 19th, 2017

1 week before

Have you ever been lucky enough to be involved in organizing the 1st conference for seafarers? No? The recipe is simple enough. Put your business aside, forget all your problems. You have the only aim to be the best to start the round table up in the perfect way.

Our team has made a grand work. We had to consider every little thing, each detail to meet the requirements of our good Company SeaTeam. We started with buying pens and notebooks for personal usage, choosing snacks and canapés, coffee, cakes, water, sugar, tea, soft drinks for coffee break, not to forget about one time dishes and napkins. Then put in order the meeting hall and moved the furniture, visited major restaurants and food villages to find the ideal place for the cocktail party and the banquet.

Yes, I almost forgot one important thing! A half of our pool about 60 Officers, Cadets and Pumpmen who was ashore by that moment, were personally informed. Time after time we repeated like “a broken record” the time, place and terms of the meeting. By the end of the day everything I wished was to do a vanishing act and keep in silence.

The day of the Conference

The long awaited day has come at last. It was hot and sunny though the rainy weather had been remaining entire week and weather reporters predicted rains in the next few hours. 4 dozens of handsome officers in full dress (our skilled practitioner and our honor) gathered in a Conference Hall.

Capt. Viktor rose to speak. He saluted the officers, introduced our special guests, Managing Director Capt. Alasdair Smith and Group Crewing Manager Simona Toma, informed the agenda and yielded the floor to Simona.

by Recruiting Officer Elena Golacheva

Simona’s speech was succinct. She underlined the place of Prisco recruiting office in life of SeaTeam Management (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., briefed on our current position, presented the information about promoted officers from Russian pool.

Alasdair Smith fixed the attendees’ attention for the whole day. He held the Seminar on Quality Safety. Useful account of events had been broken by impressive pictures and movie about incidents onboard and feedback discussion. The officers were engaged in psychological tests targeted towards teamwork and team thinking. As a practice, they were cooperated in groups to use brainstorm and see how effective it worked. I was there with our officers and got an instructive lesson. I dare say that MCRM model is universal. The factors that may influence the team onboard also may influence the team ashore. Communication, creation of

operational atmosphere, implantation of tolerant attitude to each other and members of another culture/religion either as understanding each person like an individual are pillars of our office work with the seafarers.

The 1st Annual Conference had been closed by one-hour cocktail party in the open porch followed by the Banquet where the officers had opportunity of casual meeting and non-official communication. That was amazing!

By the end of my assay I wish to say Great big thank to all the participants of the Conference! See you soon!

Make Health Happenby Chief Officer Bimbh Parmveer Singh and 2nd Officer Dheeraj Sharma, MT Front Duke

Whole purpose of setting up health care center is to understand how to maintain or improve health, you first need to know where you stand. There is no one single step to check your health but basic checks like blood pressure, blood glucose level, BMI, body fat and weight will give fair good idea where you stand.

All crew actively participated in health check and pledged to develop healthy eating habits, regular exercise and regular health checks.

Health Care Centre timing is fixed to Sunday – 1200 – 1600 Hrs Lt.

Health to be taken care when it is in good shape and not when the damage is done.

Health is something that is easy to take for granted; when we start loosing it, it is hard to believe we spent so long not valuing it.

Taking care of physical health essentially means having a healthy body. A fit body and strong immune system not only helps to be more productive and active but also adds years to our life.

When Capt. Cedric and Chief Engineer Nand Kumar visited Singapore office prior joining, they saw health center in office. This good initiative gave them an idea to have similar set up onboard. Capt. Cedric and Chief Engineer Nand Kumar personally bought health check equipment from Singapore with the permission of Mr. Weston and Superintendent Remsuddeen. After joining they shared idea of setting up health center onboard. Bridge Team took the job of designing and setting up health care center.

With much of applause and excitement health care center was inaugurated on 15th August 2017. This initiative widely appreciated by whole crew onboard. Capt. Cedric along with Medical Officer demonstrated use of various health monitoring equipment available onboard along with introduction to HSQE 041 - Ship Fit - Shore Fit Wellness Booklet.

Working under the supervision of two safety coaches in the Training Department where a lot of safety training is being conducted, this training is a lot easier to understand as safety is already introduced, familiarized and trained to us in the workplace. It helps an individual to be more cautious and alert to his/her surroundings.

Safety starts within ourselves. One must take time with each task to be done. Check and follow all the procedures and reject taking shortcuts no matter how small. Safety officer or not, we must learn to question each unsafe behavior we see and encourage others to do the same. Every act is important, no matter how small, for the safety of one, is the safety of all. We can all have a workplace that is injury free, if everyone aims for making it safe. As they quote, “We are here today, because we worked safely yesterday.”

– Ms. Shamita Anne Estrada, Training Coordinator

“The BOSH Training which was held on July 18-21, 2017 at DOLE in Calamba City, Laguna taught us so many things that we can use in our daily routine. The training was all about safety promotion and ways on how to control hazards and accident prevention. It is important especially to workers who use hazardous materials and workers who work under hazardous conditions.

The training which we took for 4 days really made me feel so satisfied for what we paid for because the knowledge that the speaker shared to us was very fulfilling. I can really say that I can apply the said training on how we can determine or identify hazards to prevent accidents. In my opinion, if all employees will take or attend this kind of training, there will be less occurrence of accidents and incidents.”

– Ms. Reiann Labian, Receptionist/Admin Assistant

“Appreciation of Life” that is what B.O.S.H is all about. The training teaches us to give full attention to safety and health security of the workers. The speaker emphasized that it is better to go home safe than to go home dead. Safety should be a way of life they say. It encourages to do safety and hazard investigation and solution to avoid accidents. The training was a fun-filled lecture and workshop on how to be safe before, during and after work.

We can also say that this training can be a wake-up call to all of us not only to our workplace but also to our own home because it teaches us to safeguard our lives and our family as well. We also learnt that human behavior is the biggest factor that contributes to various hazards and accidents, so proper discipline and work procedure should always be observed.”

– Mr. Roderick Ferrer, Accounts Executive

B. O. S. HBasic Occupational Safety and Health

by Shamita Anne Estrada, Training Coordinator

Working at a premise where safety and efficiency is a necessity, it is crucial that safety becomes everybody’s responsibility.

Even working ashore, high level of risk is still inevitable. For that reason, STMP sent three of its staff to Calamba, Laguna for four days to undergo B.O.S.H Training conducted by the Department of Labor and Employment, a government agency tasked in looking after the welfare of workers. It tackles key OSH concepts, principles and practices that are foundational knowledge requirements applicable in almost all industries. Specifically, it assists learners in identifying the key elements in the OSH situation both here and abroad;

• determine existing and potential safety and health hazards; identify the range of control measures; discuss pertinent provisions of Philippine laws that refer to occupational safety and health;

• explain key principles in effectively communicating OSH;

• identify components of effective OSH programs and demonstrate some skills in identifying hazards and corresponding control measures at the workplace.

It uses a range of methodologies such as:

• participative lectures;• workshops;• case studies, video materials in the training

delivery.

Anchoring operations are carried out more frequently onboard ships but despite this or possibly because of it they result in a

significant number of incidents, the majority of which include injuries to crew members, equipment failure but most of them are readily avoidable.

A successful anchoring operation starts with a thorough anchoring plan. Same was done after finishing discharge at Dong Jia Kou. Master, in consultation of 2nd Officer, planned a safe position to anchor to wait for next discharge.

Following were the factors kept in mind while deciding the planned position is safe for anchoring or not;

• Suitable for size and draft of the ship• Clear of other vessels taking into account swinging

circles and traffic available within the anchorage• In accordance with any local regulations and

weather forecast• Not obstructing a fairway or interfering with the

safe navigation of other vessels• Of suitable depth and holding characteristics• Seabed free of pipelines and any other underwater

obstructions

of the anchoring operation. As the load on the anchoring equipment depends upon the climatic factors, the following factors were checked with a purpose of safety of the operation;

• Wind Loads• Current Loads• Wave Loads

After the Master was satisfied with the chosen anchor position, we proceed to implement the plan to anchor. Before commencing the anchoring operation Bridge Team and the Anchor Party involved in the operation were briefed about the plan. Criticality of the safety of crew and the ship was the topic emphasized upon in the pre anchoring meeting. Appropriate checklists as per the Company’s SMS were completed well before the approach to the anchor position with satisfactory results of all the equipment involved.

Best Practices – Mooring Operationsby 2nd Officer Sumit Shah, MT Front Signe

Mooring operations are a usual practice for ships, but they are always as critical as done for the first time. Mooring operation requires

a skillful planning and its efficient implementation to ensure the safety of the ship while alongside.

Preparations

A proactive approach while preparing for mooring operations helped in a great way to maintain a balance between the safety of crew members and the commercial aspects of mooring operations. Preparations for the mooring operation started before arrival of the ship. Despite regular maintenance of the mooring equipment, precise check of all the mooring gears was very important part of pre-arrival preparations. Pre-arrival checks included;

• General condition and operation of mooring winches

• Condition of the mooring wires / ropes• Condition of the mooring tails• Layout and condition of shackles• Correct marking of the brake rendering• Proper greasing of mooring winches and the

mooring wires• Check of the hydraulic system• Other equipment for assisting in the mooring

operation include hooks, wire cutters, stoppers, warning signs and rat guards

Regular training of crew members for mooring operations regarding the procedures and the safety aspects were crucial parts in preparing the crew members for efficient mooring operations.

Planning

As soon as the mooring plan was available from the terminal, planning the mooring operation onboard was the focus to ensure the ship to be safely moored alongside with no damage to crew and the environment, to complete the purpose of the ships call to the terminal.

Mooring lines to be used were then decided keeping in mind the best possible layout for safe stay of the vessel.

Master Pilot Information Exchange must be done effectively to eliminate all possible hindrances.

Pre-Arrival Tech Meeting with Bridge Team. This to be done once information about berth available from local agents.

Mooring plan was then briefed to the stations-in-charge in pre-operational meeting between the Bridge Team and the stations-in-charge. The following points were included;

• Sequence of passing the lines• Ship specific limitations for passing the mooring lines• Method for passing mooring lines• Final mooring layout• Any terminal specific requirement for mooring

operations

After the successful understanding of the mooring plan, stations-in-charge proceeded to their respective stations and checked all the equipment before commencement of the mooring operation and reported the same to the Bridge Team.

Stations-in-charge then carried out the Toolbox meeting with their respective mooring parties and briefed about the points of pre-operational meeting with the Bridge Team and the below mentioned points:

• Mooring plan• Sequence and method of passing the lines• Safety precautions to be practiced while

performing the mooring operation• Appropriate PPE used by the crew members,

strict use of leather gloves by all crew members involved in the mooring operation

• Crew members briefed about the Snap Back Zones and the Dangerous Areas at the mooring station

• Any doubt regarding the safety of crew while performing the mooring operation - stop and clear the doubt first

• Unsafe acts stopped and rectified immediately• Bridge commands implemented effectively for

making fast the ship stepwise and properly

After the planning and briefing part was over, then we effectively implement the mooring plan for performing the mooring operation.

Other checks and procedures practiced while performing mooring operation included;

• Communication with the Bridge tested• Secondary means of communication through PA

system also tested• Two way communication practiced during the

whole mooring operation• Line of sight clear between the Officer-in-charge

and the winch operator• Winch operator instructed never to leave the

winch running• Secondary mode of communication with the

winch operator - walkie-talkie• Crew members made to stand clear of all the

wires under load even when not directly involved in their handling

• Crew members encouraged to also look for their fellow shipmate’s safety along with their own and never to stand in the bight

• Tugs made fast and cast off on Bridge command only

• Towline heaved past the bitts to have sufficient slack line to work with and tug’s line held using the stopper (rope stopper for synthetic ropes and chain stopper for wire ropes)

• Proper use of stoppers made while making fast and cast off the tug

• Crew members clear of the tugs line under load• While cast off tug’s line slacked back to the

fairlead in a controlled manner using a messenger line and then lowered to the tug

Safe and efficient performance was the prime motive of the ship’s team and was achieved successfully.

4P’s of a Successful Sports Festby Deck Cadet Fuji G. Albitos, MV Golden Magnum

Life at sea has never been easy. From the daily tasks, loneliness, cultural differences and homesickness, one can really say that being

a seaman is not for the weak. You would not see your loved ones for months; you would not be able to hang out with your friends for a long time and you would not do the things that you usually do. It is like part of your life was taken away from you.

But how do we cope up with a life like this? How do we take the boredom and homesickness brought by our profession?

Aside from having your family and loved ones as your inspiration, you should also think of ways on how to survive on your everyday life. Just like what we did in MV Golden Magnum, we organized

a Sports Fest to relax ourselves from all the stress and hardships as well as build a great camaraderie within the group.

So let me share with you the 4P’s that we did in order to organize this event.

PLAN

Golden Magnum Sports Fest was initiated by Capt. John Andrew G. Laban. He appointed me, Deck Cadet Fuji G. Albitos to be the organizer of this event and discussed what to do and what we need during the sports fest. We listed all the possible games that we can play onboard and ended up with these: Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Dart and Chess.

PARTICIPATE

After finalizing the games, we formed four teams through draw lots namely: The Unlimited, Slashers, El Veteranos and La Secreto. The first team “The Unlimited” came up with their team name since they are all fan of ‘Unlimited Rice’ while the “Slahers” are fan of cockfights. On the other hand “El Veteranos” speak for their members who are ‘oldies but goodies’ as they say and “La Secreto” whose members are mysterious and full of secrets. Moreover, we also assigned referee, scorer and announcer who will officiated the whole game.

PLAY

The first official game started last May 13, 2017. All teams were ready and equipped with passion and perseverance. No one wanted to lose but everyone still gave fair fight. As time passes by, the game

gets better and so our companionship. We became more united and open to each other which greatly affect our performances at work.

PARTY

Every game is a reason to celebrate, for a job well done and for the better person that we become. Win or lose, everyone deserves rewards for building a strong bond.

Yes, life at sea has never been easy. You would not see your loved ones for months, but you have your friends onboard whom you can call your family. You would not be able to hang out with your friends, but you can always find time to relax and release your stress with your colleagues. You would not do the things that you usually do, but you can always explore and look for ways on how to enjoy while you are onboard.

A person is said to be independent, when he can think, plan and act as he wish, without the external influence of others. In short,

the one who has freedom to do as he wish is said to be independent. Freedom of people is related to nations’ Independence.

India was struggling to get her independence back from Britisher for a very long time. Finally after, a great freedom fight india got independence officially on 15th August 1947. That auspicious moment could be better remembered through the words of our First Prime Minister Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru. Those golden words “At the stroke of midnight hour, when the whole world sleeps, India will wake up to life and freedom.”

There after, every year 15th August, Indians celebrate our Independence Day. On this day at Red Fort our Prime Minister hoist the Indian flag and there will be a guard of honors with 21 gunshots. Then we take pledge to defend our freedom with all our might. Most importantly homage is paid to those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country. Give me blood I will give you freedom-these words of Netaji will always remain in the heart of every Indian.

Indian national flag is the symbol of our nationality. It is also called the tri colour flag. The top saffron colour represents the courage and sacrifice of the nation. The white colour at the middle represents

Unity in Diversityby Junior Deck Officer Arun Sidharth, MT Front Duke

the purity and peace of our nation. The green colour at the bottom represents the faith and prosperity of the nation. And there is a blue coloured wheel at the middle of the flag, called ashoka chakra, which is also called the wheel of law. The 24 spokes of the wheel represents the 24 hours of a day.

On this occasion of independence we need to take moment to think how good we cherish our sacred freedom for the next generation. As seafarers we can also contribute a little to the development and the improvement of our nation. For that, we need to keep the name our nation sky high in all the fleets and all the companies we work so that, this job sector will be available for the upcoming generations of our country.

On our good vessel MT Front Duke, we had a well planned flag hoisting ceremony, to pay respect for the people who have contributed their lives to nation. Our senior hands onboard, Bosun and Motorman hoisted the Indian flag at 0900hrs.Lt. The tri colour flag was flying at the mast of Front Duke and we all were standing under its shade of respect, the shade of the spirit of INDIA. After flag hoisting there was small speech presented by Junior Deck Officer and Junior Engineer. They quoted the words Sardar Patel who said, “Every Indian should forget that he is a Rajput, a sikh or jat and he must remember that he is an Indian.” We the 24 citizens of India from Front Duke have felt the sense of Unity in Diversity and we also understand that, this unity can also adopted to our workplace. We are as strong as we united and as weak as we divided. JAI HIND!

Safety Culture

MCRM model is the best guide to achieve a safe and effective operation onboard. Considering these six factors will evade us

from small to severe accident that might be able to happen onboard the ship. That is why these factors are always included in our tool box meeting every morning before we carry out our daily task. But let’s focus more about culture!

This photo was taken around first quarter of this year in MT Front Cecilie. As you can see there are three different nationalities, which mean three different cultures. These guys are from Engine Department. We have four Russians Engineers, Indian Chief Engineer and Filipino ratings. At first, all of us have a big challenge on how we could get along with each other. Having different sets of behavior, beliefs, and tradition it is a serious

by Oiler Jv Tomimbang, MT Front Cecilie

challenge that must be overcome because this will affect on how we performed maintenance in engine room.

I guess the key to this culture barrier onboard the ship and that is one thing common to all of us is the Safety Culture. This is a remote thought in our mind that we must always carry out task safely and efficiently. Regardless the difference in culture, now we have one common goal as one team that we always looking forward to and that is to be safe and more effective in every task we performed. From our side this is the remarkable saying from our Company “The Good Move” that we apply every day.

Always think about safety and be efficient onboard, that is how Safety Culture must be.

Resilience Training for Singapore Office Staff

On the 06th September 2017 Capt. Soma Sundar, Quality Safety Coach & Training Superintendent based in SeaTeam’s Chennai

Office visited the Singapore Head Office to provide key staff with a detailed overview of Shell’s resilience training media and various programs being implemented. The training session was attended by the Senior Management, Managers and all Technical Superintendents who were on station.

The Shell partners in safety campaign was introduced to familiarize staff with Learning Engagement Tools, Reflective Learning techniques and KPIs for Senior Management visits to vessels

for compliance verification. Resilience concepts and strategies were the main focus however, with Capt. Soma Sundar thoroughly explaining ongoing efforts to roll-out resilience training in the tanker fleet.

During the training session, office safety issues were broached including discussion on whether vessel staff is qualified to carry out elevator repairs. Elevator maintenance has become a focal point for HSQE System update and still remains a matter of concern. Superintendents were briefed on the high frequency of elevator accidents in shipping and advised that only planned maintenance should be undertaken by vessel’s crew. When repair is required, elevators are to be mechanically locked-out until attended by a qualified technician from the maker.

Hot work requests were also discussed to ensure staff are aware of the need to submit 48 hours prior the job. Any requests which are not in compliance with ISGOTT will be automatically rejected. Another issue broached was the need to ensure Management of Change requests are approved by Fleet Managers before the conduct of the work, and to ensure the impacts indicated on the request are address in the required risk assessment.
