Wisdom of Geese
List 5 things that you know about Canada Geese when they migrate.
Consider these questions in your responses:
Why do geese fly in a V formation?
Which goose leads the V formation?
Why do geese honk while in flight?
What happens if a goose gets injured or ill during a migration flight?

Wisdom of Geese
1. V Formation:
Provides additional lift and reduces air resistance for the goose flying behind it.
When a goose drops out of the V formation, it takes more effort and energy to fly. Quickly rejoin the flock.
V formation maintains visual contact with each other, which enhances navigation and flock cohesion
2. Leadership in flight:
Lead goose: exerts most energy; Breaks the flow of air that provides the lift for the other geese. Geese rotate leadership often throughout their migration
Wisdom of Geese
3. Honking:
Communication: Encourages the lead bird to maintain its speed
4. Wounded/Sick Birds:
Other geese from the flock will leave the V formation and remain with the weakened goose. It will stay with and protect the wounded goose until it gets well or dies.
5. Migration Path:
Stays stable. Goslings learn route from parents.
