Tebodin heats up Rotterdam
Underground pipeline
The heat, in the shape of pressurizedwater of up to 120°C, is obtained from
the AVR waste incineration plant inRozenburg. It will be transported
through an underground pipeline with
an overall length of 16.8 km via themunicipalities of Vlaardingen, Schiedamand Rotterdam to the Heat TransferStation in Rotterdam. The work startedin September 2013, and the installationof the feed and return pipelines is in fullswing.
The system needs pipes with an outerdiameter of 900 mm, taking upconsiderable space in the subsurface. The top of the pipes is buried at leastone meter underground. The urbancharacter of the pipeline route presents
the great challenge. Crossings include alarge waterway and many different

Important preparation
After the preliminary route study byTebodin, the project was still a long wayfrom full acceptance by every
governmental authority and all otherstakeholders. The final alignment wascarefully worked out together inextensive consultations. Tebodin alsocoordinated all required research byexternal parties, including thegeotechnical investigations and thestudies on soil and groundwater, thepossible presence of explosives, and
the impact on other cable and pipingnetworks.
Tebodin prepared the specifications for36.5 km of pipeline and for the
construction plan. Other importantpreparations included the Health &Safety plan and a comprehensive RiskAssessment and Evaluation. On manylocations, microtunneling and horizontaldirectional drilling (HDD) techniques areused to limit the inconvenience theworks may cause.

Tree-planting in Romania
Reducing carbon footprint
The project was initiated by FinancialController Ms. Catalina Dogeanu:‘We were involved in a great day out, enjoying the fresh air and doingsomething that will have a long
lasting and positive impact on theenvironment.’ The 400 trees planted aremeant to compensate the office’s CO2emissions resulting from travel, powerconsumption, and gas consumption, asreported in Tebodin’s Corporate SocialResponsibility report 2013.
STAFF FROM TEBODIN’S OFFICE BUCHAREST, ROMANIA, PLANTED 400 TREES AROUND THETOWN OF SINAIA. BESIDES THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT, THE EVENT ALSO PROVED TO BE AGOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR TEAM-BUILDING AND EXPANDING CREATIVITY.
Participants of the team building activity
Team-building opportunity
The participants worked on thisnon-conventional project in teams.Besides the division of labor, creativity was an important part of
the exercise. The teams werechallenged to think about teambranding, create their own slogansand logo, and write a twelve-linerelevant poem with random words.

Assessing the future of CHP plants
Deltalinqs, the association of the portand industrial companies in MainportRotterdam, aims to strengthen theirinternational competitiveness andsustainable development. The problemis that coal is cheaper than gas, and islikely to remain so for the foreseeablefuture. The resulting low electricityprices, make the gas-fired industrialCHP installations within the HIC difficult
to operate profitably.
Increase in CO2 emissions
Several owners and operators are therefore considering a shutdown of these plants. They would then continue
by producing steam with boilers andbuying electricity from the national grid. However, the associated increase inCO2 emissions will have a negativeinfluence on the agreed objectives in
the Rotterdam Climate Initiative.Tebodin was commissioned byDeltalinqs to research the future ofcogeneration installations in the HIC.
‘Tebodin started with an inventory of thecurrent installations, and was able toproduce an accurate picture afterdiscussing the ‘critical installations’
with the plant managers andresponsible operational staff. Thisinformation was the foundation for

several scenarios with regard to theconsequences of the shutdown ofseveral CHP plants,’ says Mr. Izak Boot,Tebodin’s energy consultant. The visionof the owners plays a crucial part in thefinal decisions. For example, striving forautonomy may make the economicreturn less relevant. In addition to this,
there may be issues of far-reaching
process integration and deliverycontracts with third parties.
Practical opportunities
Tebodin calculated the increase inprimary energy use and CO2 emissionsfor several shutdown scenarios, providing Deltalinqs with insight into theextent of the problem within HIC.Tebodin also advised on severalpractical opportunities to limit primaryenergy use, both with processmeasures and sustainable alternatives, and thus meet the goals of theRotterdam Climate Initiative.

Offshoring made easy for pharma wholesaler Orifarm
The Denmark-based Orifarm Groupsells parallel imported and genericdrugs in Scandinavia and Germany. Atits facilities, the imported drugs are
tested and repackaged with labellingin the relevant language. To remaincompetitive, the company mustconstantly monitor its cost levels, andin 2008 it decided to explore thepossibility of opening facilities in acountry with a better cost competitiveposition, including a good qualitylabour force equivalent to westernGood Manufacturing Practices-
standards.
Cautious approach
Orifarm, in business since 1994, is nota company to rush into an offshoring
adventure. It adopted a cautiousstrategy with very smart first stepsand one of them was finding a localengineering partner. Preferably onewith plenty of experience and thebacking of a multinationalorganization.
Tebodin’s Czech office won the race.According to Orifarm´s ProjectManager Mr. Tomas Placatka,‘Tebodin stands out on account of itsprofessional approach, offering´turnkey service´ solutions. It has
in-house experts in the full range ofdisciplines.I like the high-level commitment andsparring capabilities of Tebodin staff, and the 100% follow-up they provideon all issues.’ The original project for

which Tebodin was contracted was toprovide Engineering, Procurement andConstruction management (EPCm) for anew greenfield facility in Velké Prítocno.
40 years in the Middle East
This year, Tebodin Middle Eastcelebrates its 40th anniversary. The firstactivities in this region started in 1974 inAbu Dhabi, with water projects for theWater and Electricity Department.Tebodin still strong in this segment, and, of course, the booming Oil & Gasmarket. Today, Tebodin Middle Eastoperates throughout the region with1,800 employees in offices in Abu Dhabi,Dubai (1981), Bahrain (1997), Oman(2002), Qatar (2003) and the Kingdom ofSaudi Arabia (2012).
From its early days, Mr. De Vries was on the scene. Now retired, he remains
enthusiastic about his more than threedecades in the region: ‘Life and work inAbu Dhabi are inspiring; it offers somany opportunities.’
From maverick to pillar
Mr. De Vries, originally an aerospaceengineer, joined Tebodin in 1974. AbuDhabi was Tebodin’s first office outside
the Netherlands. ‘Our office wasconsidered a bit of a maverick, whilenow it is a pillar of the international
network. When I first started, thecountry was young and undeveloped, only recently independent. There waslittle infrastructure - we had frequentpower failures - but oil income started
to flow, so we did project after project.’
From water to oil and gas
Through economic and politicalchanges in the region, the work movedfrom water supply projects to oil and

gas and industrial projects. To namea few big ones: ‘We worked on themasterplan for water supply in theNorthern Emirates, in 1984. I was theman on the ground, interviewinglocals with very little English. In1994, we did a watershed pipelineproject for ADNOC, the state oilcompany - an important step in ourdevelopment. In 1997, we started along association with AluminiumBahrain, providing projectmanagement and maintenance. Andbefore I left, the focus shifted torenewable energy.’
Through time, Tebodin remained a
stable factor in the local engineeringcommunity. Many internationalcompetitors were taken over orchanged name or structure, butTebodin always stayed the same, stable, image of strength andgrowth.
Change of course to rental waters
On consideration, however, Orifarmdecided to put the project on hold andstart with a small test facility, for whichit rented space in an existing industrialbuilding. When the time was right toupscale, Orifarm rented a biggerbuilding in Hostivice near Prague, starting operations in 2012. Since thenall its repackaging activities have beenrelocated to Hostivice.
Over the years Tebodin has beenproviding numerous consultancy andengineering works to Orifarm. ‘As a true
partner, we take care of their needs, be they big or small. Work for Orifarm is anongoing thing, involving anything from one
to several of our employees at a time. When they need something, we almostalways find an in-house expert that cansolve the task,’ says Tebodin’s ProjectManager Mrs. Lucie Švermová, ‘and in themeantime, we are keeping the permits for
the Velké Prítocno facilities updated.’

Bogdanka project back on track
Lubelski Wegiel ‘Bogdanka’ S.A. is oneof Poland’s leading producers of hardcoal (anthracite). This high-gradeenergetic coal is used mainly for thegeneration of electric and thermalenergy, as well as for cementproduction. Its key customers areindustrial companies, most of allpower industry players situated in eastand northeast Poland.
The company has set itself the target to double its production by 2015(compared to the 2011 level). Toachieve this, it has already initiatedsignificant infrastructure investments,
including the expansion of themechanical coal processing plant to acapacity of up to 2,400 tonnes per hour.
Building in an active plant
This is an extremely challengingundertaking: the new assets, neededfor complicated technologicalprocesses related to coal enrichment, have to be constructed in an active
plant amidst working machines andworking people. And the deadline for
the project is in September 2014.
Because of the complexity of theproject, at some points, operationswere running increasingly behindschedule. To get a grip on the situation, management of the company, decided
to appoint an external projectsupervisor.
Tightening up procedures
Tebodin’s Polish office sent a four-strong team headed by Mr. Mieczysław
Jendza. Their tasks were to take stockof the state of the construction work, represent the client in meetings with
the general contractor andsubcontractors, verify scheduleassumptions, report deviations andrisks and advise on how to continuerealizing the investment.
Mr. Jendza discusses the progressachieved since Tebodin’s involvement.
WHEN ITS INVESTMENT PROJECT THREATENED TO OVERRUN ITSSCHEDULE, POLISH COAL MINING COMPANY LUBELSKI WEGIELBOGDANKA DECIDED TO HIRE TEBODIN AS PROJECT SUPERVISOR.

Opening Feed
Design Lab
Tebodin is one of the partners in thisproject and helped to create thedesigns of the lab, and served in thecoordination for finding partners and
the right equipment.
In the Feed Design Lab an actualworking production line for feedstuffs(and animal feed) is available with
which product developers, nutritionistsand feedstuff technologists can testendless variations and combinationswith widely diverging processingoperations. They can grind, sieve, weigh, mix, dose, dry and even expand, extrude and vacuum coat under allsorts of strict conditions. It is an ideal
environment in which to conduct allsorts of trials and experiments and
test all sorts of production processeswithout running up large costs.
The Feed Design Lab can also serveas a small-scale production location. The development factory has aproduction capacity of 200 to 2,000 kg
per hour.

Two EU research projects
Since 2010, Tebodin has been a professional partner in two EU research
projects. The INDUSE project is aimed at improving international designstandards for above ground piping and equipment under earthquake conditions, while the GIPIPE project investigates what happens to buried pipelines inearthquakes and other large ground-induced actions, such as landslides. The knowledge gained in these research projects is already being applied in
the Netherlands, where gas production induced earthquakes pose a potential threat, but is likely to benefit seismic and landslide areas all over the world. The results were presented at international symposia in Corfu, Greece and, thisspring, at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands.

Janssen Biologics: ice-cold delivery
Janssen Biologics, a subsidiary ofJohnson & Johnson, producesinnovative drugs for the treatment ofcardiovascular and immunologicaldiseases and of cancer. The productionprocess involves pre-formulatedpharmaceutical bulk products which arevery expensive – and very sensitive tospoilage. Even a relatively brief hiccupin the production line could lead to endproducts that were unfit for use, leading
to significant costs for the company.
Minus 40 degrees
Tebodin proposed a solution to keep the
bulk products in perfect condition andreadily available: a freezer complexadjacent to the production line. Theconcept was based on 17-footcontainers, providing plenty of storageroom, with a minus 40 degrees Celsiusblast freezer to ensure that products arefrozen very quickly, which minimizes therisk of damage to their structure. Specialdesigns in electrical and controlsystems were required to securereliability and redundancy for storage of
these high-value products.
Fast realization
Kicking off in August 2013 with a firstfeasibility study for this new facility,
Tebodin went on to develop engineeringand design and continued with asuccessful fast-track project realizationperforming EPCm services. Theconstruction started in March 2014 andwas completed in June.
Working for Tebodin on this project areengineers Mr. Peter Adrichem, Mr. Rene
Duineveld and Mr. Jaap Meijvogel. ‘It takes good planning and excellentcooperation to realize a project of thisscale in such a short time,’ says Mr.Adrichem. ‘But our relationship withJanssen Biologics goes back a long
time, to when the company still bore thename Centocor. We know the client’s

Cocoa is a high-value crop grown predominantly by smallholder farmers.
Consumption of cocoa continues to grow at about 3% or 60,000-90,000 mega
tonnes per year. Projections show that global production is lagging behind the
increasing demand, indicating a clear need for expanded production,
especially of higher quality cocoa. This has impact on investment projects throughout the value chain, from
cocoa bean processing, manufacturing of chocolate and chocolate-based
products (confectionery).
Tebodin has built up significant expertise over the last decade to make
production facilities ranging from storage facilities, cocoa bean processing
plants, chocolate factories and plants for the production of chocolate drinks
and confectionery in various countries around the world.
Services include consultancy (site selection studies, due diligence surveys,
environmental studies and permitting) as well as full design and engineering,
procurement and project and construction management.
Since Tebodin has more than 50 offices in 25 countries, it has strong local
work forces fully aware of local rules, norms and standards making the
realization of projects swiftly, safely and efficiently.
Furthermore, the fact that we are deeply rooted in the agro industry and food
sector and are fully au fait with the rules of the game when it comes to issues
like hygienic design, means that we are able to transfer your investment plansinto a commercial reality.

New logistic terminal for theLDPE4 production line
SLOVNAFT, producer of motor fuels, fuel oils and petrochemical products, sees a big market opportunity in thegrowing demand for LDPE. The biggestpetrochemical company of Slovakiaalready produces this thermoplastic
that is made from oil and used for themanufacturing of, for example, plasticbags, trays, containers, packagingmaterial and six pack rings. But nowSLOVNAFT wants to increase its
annual LDPE production capacity to220,000 tons. This investment willresult in a cost-effective and a moreeco-friendly way of production.
Demanding requirements
To meet its goals, SLOVNAFT isbuilding a new production line of LDPEand a logistic terminal in Bratislava,Slovakia. The construction of the newproduction line of LDPE and thelogistic terminal already startedmid-2013; the estimated completion isscheduled for 2015.
TALKE was awarded by SLOVNAFT tobuild the new logistic terminal for the
new LDPE4 unit. This German companyprovides logistic solutions for thechemical and petrochemicalindustries. Since TALKE has noengineering office in Slovakia, thecompany commissioned part of theengineering and project managementscope to Tebodin. ‘We did severalsuccessful projects with Tebodin inother countries’ says Mr. FaissalBoujadayni, project manager of TALKE.‘They supported us during the
tendering phase with SLOVNAFT andhelped us to prepare the permitdocumentation, IPPC, detail
engineering, procurement of both civiland electrical installations.’ According
to him, TALKE and Tebodin arepreparing more projects in differentcountries.
