One of the biggest movies to be filmed in Toronto last year was SUICIDE SQUAD by David Ayers and featuring a stellar cast of some mega A-List actors.

We are proud to report that our very own GARY FOO (pictured below with Will Smith) was also in the film along with many other great guys and gals.

It comes out on Friday 5th August 2016 and we will also follow up in the next issue with more! #SKWAD!

What do they do?

In the book “ACTION ACTORS—The Tactical Performing Artist,” there are many industry roles and jobs listed and then an explanation of what those roles mean. From Cast to Crew—there are many roles on a motion picture set or theatre production and sometimes just knowing those may help you understand the industry more or better do your own job on set. Naturally, depending in the size and type of production, some jobs or roles seem like the lines are blurred but the essence will remain the same. Do you know the difference between Best Boy and Best Grip? Or how a Casting Director for Principle Cast differs from the other important role of casting background talent?

The Stunt Coordinator This issue we cover what is the role of a STUNT COORDINATOR? And what do they do?

Well, the stunt coordinator, is usually already an experienced stunt performer in their own right. They know the stunt world. Then they are hired by a TV, film or Production Company for casting to arrange the selection of stunt players and stunt doubles and performance of stunts for a film, television program or for a live audience.

Safety and performance are paramount. Where the film requires a stunt, and involves the use of any stunt performers, the Stunt Coordinator should plan and arrange the performance of the ‘stunters’ working closely with the Director.

In most cases, the stunt coordinator reviews the script and budgets, and also designs and choreographs the stunt sequence to fit with the script and director's vision. Stunt Coordinators will have an extensive list of preferred stunt performers they call on when they need them.

Gun Tips by: Gary Foo

CREDIBILITY AND SAFETY

We are largely concerned with being safe while looking good. Here are a few invaluable tips from our TACTICAL GUN SAFETY ON SET course that will help you perform better and also keep yourself and your fellow cast and crew safe. These tips are for performers.

• Assume all weapons are loaded on set.

• NEVER point a weapon (sweep) at others

• Never ‘point blank’ fire at yourself or others

• Keep finger off the trigger unless told not

• If firing blanks—be 15 to 20 feet back (min)

• If gun doesn’t fire—don’t look down barrel

• Report all malfunctions to THE ARMOURER

There are ways to cheat the effects on film so if Stunts / Director wants something else —then just DOUBLE CHECJK and REHEARSE!

Specific Techniques

To those in the business—you may hear many criteria for when a scene becomes a ’stunt’ such as a vehicle’s wheels breaking traction. However, like many speciality subjects—there is a whole different lan-guage and expectation used by the profes-sionals and car stunts are no different. In our “Tactics on Set” stunt driving classes—we have at least 10 sub-sections of stunt driving and here we will explore 5 of them.

Stunt Driving terminology

"Precision Driving", "Tactical Driving", "Convoy Driving" "Performance Driving" "Precision Stunt Driving" In general, as professionals, we consider them all types of STUNT DRIVING Different descriptions for basically the same subject. And it may incorporate many 'subjects' such as 'explosions', 'body hits' jerk lines, 'hood (bonnet) rolls, falls and hangs (off cliffs / building tops) but may include stunts involving 'cars' or other vehicles, etc.

Filming commenced on the action-packed vampire thriller EAT LOCAL. This was the directorial debut of renowned screen star; and our good friend Jason Flemyng (X-Men: First Class, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels). Charlie Cox (Netflix’s Daredevil, The Theory of Everything), Mackenzie Crook (Pirates of the Caribbean series, Game of Thrones), Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle), Freema Agyeman (Doctor Who) and Eve Myles (Doctor Who, Torchwood) head up an incredible all-star cast, while Jason Flemyng directs a razor-sharp script written by BAFTA-nominee Danny King (Wild Bill). Well done, Jase!

What is the “Tactics On Set” program?

The Tactical Performing Artist (TPA) training program was created as a part of the “Tactics on Set” umbrella group. It allows actors, performers, producers and directors to learn a lot about the methods and tactics used without the years of study (and without all the ‘trade secrets’) so that scene and acting would look good on stage and screen.

It was created by Gary Foo who is uniquely qualified with some very extensive training and experience in several Tactical and Operational Theatres and who also has over 25 years the motion picture and acting industry. (His first tactical advisory for a movie was around 1991!)

Consulting

We Advise, Consult, Coordinate, Share and Inform but we never argue. berate or even demand. Whether it’s tactical scenes, medical scenes, disaster and SAR (Search and Rescue) scenes—we recognise that the Production have a specific vision in their mind and we have been brought in to add value & enhance that with our contribution.

Our experience has taught us not to get frustrated but to create a space where we can provide solutions to the Production in a way that creates harmony and success while being on time and on budget.

Competition?

Over the years we have trained a LOT of people and in many bases, some became our competition! In general—that’s great! That’s what you want to have happen. Do consider if that’s what you really want (and can) do!

Gary was not only a serving Police Officer and tactical trainer but he consults to and trains many Police and Military organizations. He is also a Tactical Paramedic, a Rescue Technician and an international SAR (disaster search and rescue) Operator recognised by the United Nations and with deployment and leadership experience in most of the major disasters in the past 20 years or so.

Gary Foo (published author) who’s latest tactical book is “ACTION ACTORS—The

Tactical Performing Artist. 12

10 THINGS YOU SHOULD DO AS A TECHNICAL ADVISOR

1 You should help Producers to manage and control their costs

2 You will bring authenticity to productions, “making it feel real”

3 Create an authentic ‘look’ of the production—from sets to uniforms

4 Ensure the ‘visual action’ of the performers on camera

5 Support the structure of scripting—with the way things ‘should’ be said

6 You may bring in other specialists to make the Production ‘shine’

7 Use your network of people to call on to help the Production

8 Always think ahead and of things ‘regular people’ don’t even think of

9 Don’t be arrogant about your role. Be a positive team player.

10 Be a professional, be available and support the production.

TECHNICAL ADVISORS

ACRONYMS

& MNEMONICS!

Did you know that’s an actu-al acronym? It’s kinda

rude—but we also know most all the acronyms and

language you’ll ever need in a given situation—and also some you probably don’t want! It might add some

authenticity though!

But Military Advisors, Greg Bishop & Brian Chung of MUSA Military Entertainment Consulting said it well:! “Just because you can

speak English, doesn’t mean you can teach English.” Meaning that not everyone who did the job, could or should be an advisor.

Some things Gary Foo say’s to remember if you want to consult on Films & TV

FITNESS AND FAT LOSS

The two F’s = Fitness and Fat-loss.

Add that with performance and muscle shape and we have the foundation for most action actors and stunt performers scope of interest and awareness when taking on a physical or action acting role.

Will the shirt be off or the muscle toned body shown and as stereotypical as it sounds—we are watching the muscle tone and the apparent ‘fitness’ or ‘shape’ of the actor aren’t we?

Sound’s shallow? Maybe. But so many action films, in fact other films, these days demand it. It’s not always a requirement—but for those interested in leaning out or being ‘fitter’ then these tips are for you.

In future , we will be specifically dealing with ways to improve your fitness and also your performance (especially if you are an action actor or stunt performer) on a movie shoot!

These future tips will be built around • * How to Build Muscle

• * How to Burn fat

• * Improve Flexibility

• * Increase Endurance

Tactical Performing Artists with Tammy Everett, Siobhan Richardson, Rachel Flesher and Casey Hudecki.

Performing life-threatening stunts is scary enough – but to

swordfight or crash into cars wearing skimpy costumes

rather than padding requires a special kind of courage

An edited article originally from Leila Hawkins at the Guardian and shared

They perform mind-blowing stunts dressed in clothes as flimsy as paper doilies and are forced to meet Holly-wood’s demands for ever-shrinking waistlines without losing the muscles they depend on for work. Meet cine-ma’s small but dedicated community of stuntwomen: because of the skimpy clothes they have to wear, they put themselves in more danger than their male colleagues.

But it’s all part of their day job. Tammie Baird is Holly-wood’s go-to stuntwoman for car hits. She’s appeared in Fast & Furi-ous, Chris Brown’s Next 2 You mu-sic video, and NCIS: LA.

She’s been smashed into wind-shields, bounced off bonnets (hoods) and slammed into the tarmac – more often than not wearing a tight dress

and heels.

When Baird got her first role, in Mr & Mrs Smithh she went shopping for stunt gear “like a guy”.

“I bought the biggest, bulkiest pads, and thought, ‘Yeah, I’m protected, nothing’s gonna get me.’ Then I saw my wardrobe – I was wearing a mini-skirt.”

20

Page 21: TECHNICAL ADVISORS EVENTS IN TORONTO - Wild … Magazine... · Will Smith as DEADSHOT! 2 Welcome to the Tactics on Set Action Actors Magazine. Here you will find articles, news, tips,

21

[1] Straight away, she says, she real-ised this was the deal. But there was never any question of it being a set-back. She researched athletes who risk injury to their knees: female fig-ure skaters turned out to be the best role models.

Figure skaters perform pirouettes on one of the hardest, most slippery sur-faces in the world, while balancing on thin blades and wearing minus-cule dresses. Baird discovered they use crash pads made with gel to pro-tect their hips, shoulders and knees from smashing against the ice. By dipping them in tea she matched the gel pads to her skin tone to make them invisible on screen.

[2] The idea has now spread through-out the stunt community. Detailed statistics comparing the on-set inju-ries of stuntwomen and men are not kept. Andy Armstrong runs one of the biggest stunt facility companies in the world and has created gravity-

defying sequences in some of the top action films of the last 25 years, in-cluding Total Recall, Charlie’s An-gels and Thor.

“There are a lot more men perform-ing stunts than there are women,” he says. “It’s very disproportionate: on any movie you’ll end up with mostly men doing the action. You won’t get many movies where there are lots and lots of women.”

[3] Studios are wary of discussing the specifics of injury rates, but Arm-strong stresses they employ safety officers whose job it is to make sure actors don’t fly around in cherry pickers without a harness. They rec-ognise the extra risks women face because “unless they’re playing ath-letic nuns, they’re going be less cov-ered than men”.

Baird says she was lucky to have vet-eran stunt performers mentor her. Take Dayna Grant, a leading stunt-woman from New Zealand who has doubled for Charlize Theron twice (in Mad Max: Fury Road and Snow White and the Huntsman), Tilda Swinton (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Ward-robe), and Lucy Lawless (Xena: War-rior Princess).

Throughout her 22-year career she never questioned the fact that men have the benefit of being fully pad-ded while she’s flung off galloping horses in a tight leather skirt.

“It’s just what needs to be done for film. It’s not life-threatening; it just hurts a lot more,” she says.

ceremony in LA. Photograph:

Baird—Stuntwoman

Tammie

[4] Grant once did have a serious ac-cident, caused largely by her foot-wear. “They were very slippery, fem-inine shoes. I slipped on a hill and I got impaled by a dagger, through my head. I ended up going into cardiac arrest and I was a bit of a mess.” The dagger went through her cheek, both nasal cavities, and fractured the back of her left eye socket.

It wasn’t anyone’s fault, but as a stunt co-ordinator herself she makes sure her crew are able to work with the shoes they’re given, otherwise they’ll get special footwear.

The pressure for women actors to inhabit a figure that’s only sustaina-ble in Photoshop trickles down to their stunt doubles too. Crash dieting is common if they’re needed to dou-ble a particularly twig-like performer at short notice.

“I slipped in very feminine shoes … and got impaled by a dagger through my head. I ended up in cardiac arrest” —

Baird says: “It breaks my heart when-ever I hear someone’s starving them-selves, whether to double an actress or just because a bully wants them to be thinner.” She says she wouldn’t take a role to double for someone who’s suddenly lost a drastic amount of weight. Unfortunately for those with less choice over parts, such weight loss can have a damaging ef-fect on their ability to perform. “If we lose our muscle tone then we’re no good to the actress,” Baird says.

Melanie Wise, founder of the Artemis Women in Action film festival, devotes her career to sup-porting empowering female roles in action movies. “All the stuntwomen I’ve personally met are beautifully built. They’re athletic, they’re mus-cular, but they don’t look like women on steroids. They’re very fit and trim, and I’m sitting here thinking: ‘OK, they want them to be thinner?’”

Stunt performers’ acting skills also go largely unnoticed. For each job, they have to study the body language of the actor they’re doubling and look for quirks in their movements so they can copy them exactly: you should never notice them, after all.

It’s precisely because of these talents that they haven’t earned much recog-nition historically. Olivia Munn, star-ring in X-Men: Apocalypse, released last month, enraged the blogosphere when she seemed to claim she’d done all her own stunts while Julia Rekaikyna is listed as her double.

But Baird says that she may well have done all the stunts she was asked to do, rather than every single physical feat her character Psylocke performs.

Neither Baird nor Grant are bothered when actors take the credit for their stunts. In fact they categorically say their job is simply to make them look good. But it does ruffle feathers among some members of the stunt community, and Grant believes this is happening more and more because newer generations want their work to be recognised.

Stunt co-ordinators are campaigning for an official category at the Oscars, while the Taurus world stunt awards have been honouring stunt perform-ers since 2001. At least the gender pay gap doesn’t apply to stuntwom-en. Men and women get paid the same daily rate, and on top of that they get “adjustments” for the more dangerous scenes.

When Baird is hired she discusses how much she gets per car hit for example, and if she thinks the rate is too low she negotiates. New Zealand goes one better, paying women more than men because they take into ac-count their lack of protection – as do a few stunt co-ordinators around the world, including Armstrong

“I think women are amazing,” says Baird. “There’s nothing a woman can’t do hands down.” Men get hurt too – “Even a man who’s doing a stunt with big bulky clothes, I guar-antee that if he’s doing a stair fall, the pointiest part of the stair will find the one spot that he does not have pad-ding on” – it’s just that they’ve been given the luxury of protec-tion. Women have had to seek it out themselves. “Stunt performers' acting skills go unnoticed, but

Film First Aid Kit List What’s in your first aid kit? Do you just buy what’s in the store and throw it in your bag? Do you have a list of items that you want to add to your list? Other than the obvious more advanced adjuncts such as Tourniquets and Haemostatic Agents (blood clotters) and even less technical like Sam Splints—we recommend a few things in your kit.

For a start, try to use skin tones that match your skin colour and rather than—say Blue Food Band Aids / Plasters. As an action professional you may cut yourself, get a headache, get slightly dehydrat-ed, get a nose bleed, fall and bruise yourself—etc. These kits are designed for that and not so much the usual off-the-shelf health and safety general office packs. (We will cover drugs and medicines another time or on the course.)

Some things you might want to include in your kit.

Regular small First Aid Kit • Micropore (great for deep cuts too) • Hydrocolloid dressings (skin colour) • Skin coloured medical tape • Blister Treatments (numerous) • Histo / Surgical Glue • Meapore Dressings • Surgical Blades • Duct Tape • Ice Packs • Heat muscle rubs • Tensor / Cohesive Bandages • Zinc Oxide Tape • Rehydration Salts • Water / Saline • Cling Film /

Saran Wrap • Burn Jell • Eye Irrigation • EMS Sheers • Tweezers • Needles • Nail clippers • Antibacterials • Hand sanitizer

Sunday 18 Sept 2016—$49 This is a $129 seminar reduced to an affordable 3 hours $49 workshop. From how to glue your skin back to how to apply a tensor—with freebies!

Early Registration required before 4 August 2016
