CHAPTER B
Introduction ComponentAllowable Loads
This chapter contains illustrations andload ratings for the various SafwaySystems™ Scaffold Components. The loadratings are based on the capacity of theindividual components only. Refer tochapter D and warnings at front of manualbefore computing the scaffold loads.Allowable loads specified in this chapterinclude safety factors required by FederalOSHA.When designing scaffolds with uniqueconfigurations or special loading conditions, consult with Safway engineering or a professional structuralengineer familiar with scaffold design prior to design finalization.

CHAPTER D
Introduction Tieing & Bracing
Quantities and location of ties, guys andbraces will vary depending upon thescaffold size, weight, shape and loadconditions. The following generalguidelines indicate minimum Safwayrequirements and are not all inclusive. When designing scaffolds with uniqueconfigurations or special loadingconditions, consult with Safwayengineering or a professional structuralengineer familiar with scaffold design priorto design finalization.
When designing a square or rectangularscaffold, Safway recommends ahorizontal diagonal (SHD) be included inthe base design. This diagonal will aid theerector in providing a square scaffold aswell as assuring hook on plank and deckwill fit properly.
Safway tube and clamp components maybe substituted for Safway Systems™
Scaffold bracing members or horizontaldiagonal members. When doing so theload capacity of these components andtheir effect on the completed scaffoldmust be considered.
Assure ties, stand-offs or guys are locatedat runner and bearer levels only.
NOTE: Proper access and platform toeboards arerequired on all scaffolds. These items have beeneliminated from the illustrations in this chapter forclarity purposes only.

Circular Scaffold Tieing & Bracing
Extreme care must be taken when designing a tower guyed from below. The applied vertical and horizontal loadsand wire pre-tensioning loads must be determined and included in the scaffold design. Rolling Scaffold Bracing
* Three times the minimum base dimension in California and some other states. Always check local code.
**Safway Systems™ adjustable caster adapter (SACA) can not be used for this application. Always checklocal code. Vertical diagonal must be installed on posts at bearer runner connections.
SINGLE BAY MULTI-BAY
Required to increase load capacity ofcaster adapter (SCA) with 12 inchdiameter caster. See allowable loadon page B-3.Brace single bay or multi-bay rollingscaffold as described above. Inaddition, each scaffold post must bestabilized with additional horizontalbracing level. This additional levelmust be located 21 inches above thebottom bracing level and used toreduce the base post unbracedlength to 63 inches.
HORIZONTALDIAGONALS (SHD)
Always required at base, each 21feet in height and at top level.
SAME BRACING REQUIREMENTS
as for single bay free standingscaffold tower. See page D-1.
ALL ROLLING TOWERSrequire runners, bearersand horizontal diagonal

Scaffolds with Knee-Out Brackets Bracing & Tieing
SAFWAY SYSTEMS™ TECHNICAL MANUAL 4/98
D-6
NOTE: All Scaffolds with knee-out brackets also require bracing and tieing as shown in applicable section of this chapter.
Allowable concentrated load forknee-out brackets (SKO) are shownon page B-8. Loads in table belowmay be used when knee-outbrackets are installed in symmetricalscaffolds as shown in figure 1 and 2,and in non-symmetrical scaffoldswhen auxiliary bracing is installed toprevent overturning and racking.See figure 3.
Non-symmetrical assemblies similarto figure 3 require a stand-off at Aand a tie-in at B on each frameline with knee-out brackets. In addition, vertical diagonals (SDW)may be required in each frameplane. Contact Safway Engineeringor a Structural ProfessionalEngineer familiar with scaffolddesign prior to erecting such non-symmetrical scaffolds.
