Students and Teachers Online• Be Proactive:
• Educate students – digital citizenship• Set expectations• Monitor• Make assignments engaging and with an end product• Allow ample time but no open access free time.
• CIPA regulations require that we block access to inappropriate content (defined as obscene/offensive content or inappropriate photos).
• Access to Inappropriate material:• If a student access inappropriate material accidentally,
notify the STC and principal so no disciplinary actions will be taken.
• If you access inappropriate material accidentally, notify your principal and the DTC immediately. If you could get to it then so can the students.
Monitoring of Access• All Access if monitored for every student and employee or guest accessing the network.• Reports generated daily regarding online activity and reviewed.

• Blog post stated students were “disengaged, lazy whiners.
• Fired……comments made it impossible for teacher to work with parents and community.
• Federal judge recently dismissed the lawsuit filed by the former Philadelphia teacher that was fired 2 years ago seeking her job back.
• Judge ruled that Munroe's blog posts didn't provide enough value to the debate over educational reform to outweigh the district's right to maintain an "efficient" educational environment.
• Appealed to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.• Appeals court upheld firing.

• She didn’t pay careful attention to the pics she was posting on FB for her friends and family…..
• She had a little too much fun while on vacation and the insurance company collected enough evidence of her “relaxing at the beach, hanging out at clubs and generally having a lot of fun”.
• She lost her insurance benefits.

Charlotte” • In her About Me section of FB she
stated “I am teaching in the most ghetto school in Charlotte.”
• Superintendent viewed remarks as racially insensitive.
Back to America and Dumb Teacher Comments
• Connecticut• Myspace conversation• Teased student about his
girlfriend• Comments made like
“kiss my brass!”, “lifelong detention”
• Ruling: Federal court ruled that termination did not violate 1st Amendment because the speech was likely to disrupt school activities. Faulted teacher for failing to maintain professional, respectful association with students.
• Mentor teacher for beginning teachers.
• Sued because claimed she was demoted because of blog comments where she described one administrator as “a smug know-it-all creep” who had a “reputation of crapping on secretaries…”.
• Federal appeals court rejected her 1st Amendment argument finding that her nasty, personal comments interfered with her job and that they “fatally undermined her ability to enter into confidential and trusting mentor relationships” with beginning teachers.
• Teacher of the year in FL.• Anti-Gay posts on FB
• “Almost threw up” when saw same sex unions legalized.
• “If one doesn’t like the most recently posted opinion, based on Biblical principals and God’s law, then go ahead and un-friend me. I’ll miss you like I miss my kidney stone from 1994.”
• Suspended for violation of the social media policy.
• Eventually was re-instated after lengthy battle.

• Michael Baker, 20, Jenkins, Ky posted a selfie.
• He thought it would be cute to “flip off” the Jenkins Police Department while he stole their gasoline.
Could cost you time in jail
• Convicted thief James Tindell of OR was tired of court-ordered drug testing so he decided to skip town.
• He liked to keep his friends and family informed of his whereabouts though so he checked in frequently along the way.
• He also taunted police with phrases such as “catch me if you can” in his posts.
• He had to reimburse the state $2600 for his flight back to Oregon and spend 30 months in prison.

• FB Post: This is Steve Butcher, due to slick roads, we will not have school in Pulaski County….
• Comment: “Oh good lord this is ridiculous. Send them to school.”

Sometimes It is Better to keep your thoughts to yourself……
• Social Media can be an excellent tool to connect and communicate.
• Can help to promote a positive message.• As an Educator you are a role model for the students and you
have an obligation to educate each child but also to demonstrate appropriate online behavior.
• THINK before you post.• DO NOT friend students.• Keep your private life private.
• Once it is out there, you can’t take it back.
