According to a recent study by Ernst & Young on the technology M&A landscape, cloud / software-as-a-service deals represented the largest segment by volume and value in 3Q12, with mobile / e-payments and HCIT deals also showing significant surges in deal value. According to Frost and Sullivan, U.S. healthcare providers will significantly increase their participation in health information exchanges (“HIEs”) over the next two years, driven by provider consolidation, increased adoption of electronic health records, and cost-reduction and operational efficiency initiatives. Additional factors driving growth include the upholding of the Affordable Care Act by the Supreme Court, Barack Obama’s re-election, Stage 2 Meaningful Use requirement for more HIE participation, and technical standards for interoperability. Health Information Exchange: Significant Market Growth Ahead FierceHealthIT 11/27/2012

IDC predicts that the IT industry’s transition to “third-platform” technologies such as mobile computing, cloud services, social networking, and big data analytics, will drive approximately 90% of IT spending growth in 2013. While IT spending is expected to exceed $2.1 trillion in 2013, up 5.7% from 2012, smart mobile devices are expected to account for 57% of the industry’s overall growth. “Cyber Monday” recorded a record breaking $1.46 billion of online sales, an increase of 17% over 2011. Notably, mobile devices accounted for more than 18% of retailer website visits on Cyber Monday, an increase of almost 70% over 2011. The convenience offered by tablets and smartphones is boosting sales for large online retailers as shoppers are transitioning from online researchers to online buyers with mobile sales almost doubling compared to 2011. In addition, mobile devices now account for 13% of global Internet traffic, up from 4% in 2010. Overall, Meeker believes the rapid growth of tablet and smartphone penetration amongst Internet users will lead to a massive opportunity for companies that sell into these markets.
