5 Ways Massage Therapy Can Help After a Car AccidentAn auto accident is traumatic, even if you don’t get injured. You have paperwork, repairs, and insurance claims, and all of that stress can overshadow a little tenderness in your neck or a slight headache. Getting massage therapy after an auto accident can make all the difference to how you feel a week, month, or even a year after your accident.

Emotional stability through massageYou should book an appointment as soon as possible following the accident. There are some immediate benefits to massage therapy that could help you recover. One of the most immediate benefits is the effect massage has on your nervous system. Even if you don’t get injured, an accident is shocking and traumatic. Massage can improve your circulation, help you relax and give you an opportunity to recover your emotional balance. There is some scientific evidence that massage can ease anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although there is no guarantee that a massage soon after a car accident will mean you won’t develop such conditions, dealing with the trauma quickly and recovering your emotional stability certainly can’t hurt.

Soft tissue injuries often respond to massageInjuries to the soft tissue of the neck, such as whiplash, are extremely common following auto accidents. Massage is generally an effective method for such injuries. Massage increases circulation, which promotes healing. Massage also alleviates the pain of soft tissue injuries. In whiplash, especially, your symptoms may include poor range of motion and stiffness, and massage improves both symptoms. Knee injuries are also common in auto accidents. Massage therapy can help again by relieving pain and promoting healing of the soft tissue of the joint.

Massage therapy may help treat concussionIf you get a concussion in a car accident, massage therapy may be a useful treatment, either immediately, or in the following days and weeks. Massage techniques that are designed to strengthen your parasympathetic nervous system work particularly well for those who have a concussion, or who are experiencing problems following a concussion.

Massage therapy and soreness or generalized painAnyone who has been involved in an accident can tell you that you might develop soreness in seemingly odd places in the following days. You may not remember banging your shoulder, but you probably feel like you did, or your lower back may be inexplicably sore. The force and suddenness of an auto accident can make your whole body ache.

Massage provides pain relief. It increases circulation, improves the function of your lymphatic system, and it helps to reduce inflammation. Trigger point therapy, a specific form of massage therapy, may resolve unspecified or generalized pain as well.

"I got into an accident in January of this year and chose this facility to handle my injuries based on their google reviews and rating. Their reviews and ratings are definitely well earned. From my first visit to the day I "graduated," it was nothing short of and exceptional experience. You can tell that every single person that I encountered cared about my well being and backed it up with such kindness. It wasn't just the reception and/or services provided, though. It was the teaching. They would help explain why I would feel the way I did and how things are related. I was provided information that would benefit me for the rest of my life to stay healthy. I can't imagine all places being like this. But, this place is the epitome of what all places should be. Thanks for all of your help, guys. I still do all of my exercises and stretches and feel good." - PAUL J.

Q&A with Dr. Chris Eley

Dr. Chris Eley

Your favorite Pacific NW Restaurant? Man that's tough. It's always changing for me but lately I've been a big fan of Lapellah.

Your favorite vacation destination? Looking at Hawaii! I've never gone but it looks pretty hard to have a bad time.

What are some of your favorite hobbies? Cooking, beach trips with my fiance, hiking, playing with my dog, and the occasional retro video game binge.

What is your favorite book? Fahrenheit 451

1. What made you want to become a chiropractor? A number of things. I like to learn new things all of the time, so health and science were easy choices for me. What led me to chiropractic specifically was being treated by a doc in California after being in a car accident and making a full recovery in a short amount of time.

2. What modality is your favorite? I love to adjust! Nothing better than seeing the look of immediate relief on someones face when you're helping them through an injury.

3. Tell me a patient success story that stands out in your mind: I've got a few favorites though of late it would have to be the case where the patient was hit by a truck in a crosswalk as a pedestrian and came in leaning on a cane and needed help to sit, stand; could barely move. I probably used half a roll of K-tape on him in the first appointment just so he could relax a few muscles. After the first week or two of treatment, he no longer needed the cane to walk and he made a full recovery in less than two months.

4. What is the best advice you can give to your patients? I can't stress the importance of stretching and exercises early and often as soon as you are able. I see my patients recover more quickly and more completely when they do.

5. If you had to pick any other career, what would it be? I would probably teach. Failing that I'd open a bunch of pizza places and just have fun.
