DR. JAMES A. BAILEYClass of 1950

WESTVIRGINIA STATE COLLEGESPORTS HALL OF FAME

Dr. James A. Bailey, known as "O'Dude," epitomized the true meaning of studentathlete. When Bailey entered West Virginia State College" he found that he was thesmallest candidate out for a tackle position, weighing about 200 pounds. Yet, hisspeed, talent, and tremendous desire earned him a starting position as offensive and de-fensive tackle for four consecutive years. During his junior year, he received All-Con-ference, Central Collegiate Athletic Association honors, and during his senior year hereceived All-Conference honors and All-American honors from the Afro-American.

After graduating from West Virginia State College in 1950 with a Bachelor of Sci-ence in education, specializing in science, Bailey proceeded to play two years of foot-ball with the Chicago Hornets of the old American Football League. He then enteredthe U. S. Army serving in Korea at a 1st Lieutenant.

Just prior to entering medical school at Ohio State University, he was involved ina serious accident which left him paralyzed from the waist down. He nonethelesspursued his medical studies, received his degree in 1964 and moved to Atlanta,Georgia to begin private practice while teaching in the medical school at Emery Uni-versity. His private practice grew to the point that he was needed full time and con-sequently had to relinquish his teaching responsibilities.

"O'Dude" Bailey and his wife Daisy have four children. Mrs. Bailey is completingher studies in law school and expects to enter the legal field as a practicing attorneyin the very near future.

Dr. Bailey is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

DR. JOHN M. BATESClass of 1937

WEST VIRGINIA STATE COLLEGESPORTS HALL OF FAME

Dr. John M. Bates, known as "Showboat," participated in three varsity sports atWest Virginia State College: Baseball, Basketball and Football. He lettered in basket- I

ball and football and was a member of the 1936 CIAA and Midwest championshipfootball team.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1937 from West Virginia State CollegeDr. Bates began an illustrious career in education and coaching. He began his career atAlcorn A & M College in 1937. In 1938 he developed and coached the first football andbasketball program in Attala County, Mississippi, at Attala County Training School.From 1939 thru 1948 he was assistant football coach and developed and coached thefirst track team to the Big 8 high school Conference Championship at Lanier HighSchool in Jackson, Mississippi. He has since taught and coached several sports atcolleges and high schools in Mississippi, North Carolina, Georgia and Colorado.

Dr. Bates has been active in the Boy Scouts of America, the National EducationAssociation, high school football and basketball officiating, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,Inc., ana the Y.M.C.A.

He has received numerous awards, including the Black Educators Service Award,the Denver Classroom Teachers Human Relations in Education Award and a U.S. De-partment of Health and Human Services Award.

In 1981 Dr. Bates received his Ph.D. in Education from the University of North-ern Colorado.

"Showboat" Bates and his wife Gladys have two children and two grandchildren.

KNUTE W. BURROUGHSClass of 1937

WESTVIRGINIA STATE COLLEGESPORTS HALL OF FAME

Knute W. Burroughs played right guard for West Virginia State College from 1933thru 1936. He played on the 1936 National Championship football team and was se-lected on the All Mid-Western Conference teams of 1934-35-36 and was selected All-American 1935-36. He was the captain of the team in 1935-36.

He adopted the many forceful traits of the late Coach Adolph P. Hamblin in themany years he spent as coach and teacher in the schools of Logan County, West Vir-ginia. As coach of all sports at Buffalo High School he was able to place seventeen boyson the All-State football and basketball teams. Two players, Lionel Taylor andCharles Cowans went on to become professional football players. Taylor played for theDenver Broncos, has been wide-receiver coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers and is pre-sently one of the offensive coaches for the Los Angeles Rams. Cowans played for theLos Angeles Rams and made All-Pro.

Mr. Burroughs has played a significant role in religious activities since he has lived inLogan, West Virginia. He was a long time member of the St. James AM.E. Church formany years where he served as a steward and trustee. At present he is a member of theS1. Mary's Catholic Church where he serves as a lay minister, vice president of theHoly Name Society and chairman of the Board of Directors.

Since retirement he stills plays an active part in community affairs. He is past pre-sident and present vice president of Logan County React, a rescue search team whichhelps in many emergency situations. He also services as West Virginia State Chairman ofU. S. A. F. Mars. and is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

CLARENCE CLARKClass of 1950

Clarence Clark, known as "Bump," was a four-letter man at West Virginia State I

College. He was captain of both the championship football and basketball teams of 1948.1

49, the Afro-All American team in 1949 and made All~IAA in both football and basket-1

ball while also participating in baseball and track. I

Quoting from an article written in 1948 by Art Carter, Afro-American sports writer,after the CIAA Tournament: "It was difficult to single out any individual star for theJackets, but Clarence Clark 25-year-old war veteran, was something to watch. Clark'splaymaking and ball handling won the plaudits of the fans and the votes of the coachesas the tournament's most valuable player."

After graduating from West Virginia State College with a Bachelor of Arts in MusicEducation, he won a try-out with the San Francisco 4ger's in 1950 and eventually play-ed with the Ontario Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League.

Clark earned a Master's Degree in Corrections at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohioand is currently serving as chairman of the Ohio Parole Board. He has been with theOhio Department of Corrections for 28 years.

"Bump," is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., is married to MallineBooker, Class of 1949. They have two children, Deborah Ann and Rochelle Lynn.

OLIVER M. GREENEClass of 1931

WEST VIRGINIA STATE COLLEGESPORTS HALL OF FAME

Oliver Greene, known as "Bus," played on the basketball, baseball and football teamsat West Virginia State College from 1927-31. He was an All-American in football in 1929,lettered for three years as shortstop on the baseball team and was the tenth man as a guardon the basketball team, which carried nine players on their traveling team. Along with hisathletic achievements, "Bus" was also Student Council President at State during 1930-31,amember of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the ''W'' -Club.

Greene graduated from West Virginia State College with a Bachelor of Science in In-dustrial Arts in 1931. He taught for 27 years at Garnett High School in Charleston, WestVirginia, instructing in auto mechanics and woodwork. He was also the assistant footballcoach at Garnett from 1931-37 and has been actively involved with the publication of theWestVirginia Digest Newsletter.

"Bus" has been a member of the "State Family" since 1927 when he entered StateHigh School.

Any time you happen to be in Ronceverte at 8:00 a.m. please watch out for the joggersbecause "Bus" will be one of them.

DR. HAROLD N. HARVEYClass of 1936

WEST VIRGINIA STATE COLLEGESPORTS HALL OF FAME

~Dr. Harold Harvey, known as "Big Harv" or "Wahoo," played football for West ~

Virginia State College as a tackle for 3 years. He was ineligible his first year at State be- Icause he transferred from Howard University where he had also played football. Howard's Iloss was State's gain when Harvey was selected All-American and All-Midwestern in hisjunior and senior years.

After graduating from West Virginia State College with a Bachelor of Science in Chem-istry he continued his education at Meharry Medical College, graduating in 1942. In 1943 I

Harvey entered the U. S. Army Medical Corp where he served his country until 1946 whenhe returned to Charleston to set up private practice and be appointed Assistant HealthCommissioner of Charleston. He has served as the president of the WV Medical Associat-ion and the Capitol City Medical Society. In 1957, he moved to California, where he wasassociated with Los Angeles County University, the Southern California Medical Centerand the Olive View Medical Center Hospital.

Dr. Harvey has received numerous honors and awards, including the General Prac-tioner of the Year by the Charles Drew Medical Society in 1965. He has served as anexecutive board member of the Pacoima Memorial Hospital since 1965 and is a memberof Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

He is married to the former Elva Delene Washington.
