President’s Letter

Happy New Year everyone! What kind of fiber activities are on your list of New Year’s resolutions? I’m planning to challenge myself to make a variety of different styles of rugs (both floor rugs and mug rugs) this next year. I’ve already wound warps for two looms. In the upcoming months we have some workshops and classes scheduled so we can learn new techniques and skills. To me, that is one of the advantages to being a guild member. I love the educational opportunities and the inspiration gained by seeing what others bring to show and tell.

Thank you to everyone that contributed to our most successful sale yet at the MAC Fest! We appreciated everyone who brought in hand-made merchandise, everyone who helped with set-up, everyone who volunteered as a salesperson, everyone who demonstrated, and those who helped with take-down, product return and bookkeeping. What a lot of volunteer hours! And it was a lot of fun as well!

Winnie

No Board Meeting was held in November. The Treasurer reports that Bank account balance is $14,055.28, and with $960 in the Karen Zorn scholarship fund, and $875.50 in outstanding checks,

the guild's operating funds balance (check book balance) is $12,219.58.

Upcoming Programs

January: Paula Rudnick will be presenting a program on Saori Style Weaving followed by a demonstration on a specific Saori style idea not shown in books or other places.

February: Denise Kovnat will introduce us to an age-old craft – Dorset buttons.

March: Mini-workshops

April: Election of Officers.

Beki Welsch will share her year-long study of weaving with sewing threads. Included will be samples of lace, double weave, and diversified plain weave. You will learn how sewing thread compares to other threads in a weaver's stash, and its suitability for various weaves.

May: Reduce-your-stash sale and potluck.

Mesa Art Festival A Roaring Success

We had a fun and profitable week-end at the Mesa Art Festival in the middle of December. We sold $6,700 worth of our lovely handmade items. This meant that we distributed $5,665 to our members. The cost of

the booth and space alone was $1080. This all happened because 22 of our members submitted items for the booth and at least 22 members helped in the set-up, take-down, demonstration and management of sales in the booth. Although it was a lot of work, we

had a lot of fun. It is hard to count up all of the volunteer hours that made this happen, but I can count at least 225 hours and I’m sure that it was actually more than that. So… start making things for next December’s booth! Cindy Reynolds, coordinator

Workshops

Our workshops are full, but if you would like to be placed on a waitlist, please contact Linda Wade, [email protected]. Conquer Your Fear of Cutting Date: January 25 & 26, 2020 (Sat/Sun) Are you afraid to cut your handwoven fabric? In this two–day workshop Winnie and Beki will walk you through the scary parts as you make a vest using your handwoven fabric. Workshop participants must know how to use the sewing machine they bring, but will learn tips on layout, piecing, seam finishes, and lining. Vest patterns (some with optional sleeves) in multiple sizes will be provided. We will discuss pattern choices. Denise Kovnat Date: February 15-17, 2020 (Sat/Sun/Mon) Designing with Deflected Double Weave Participants will share an in-depth learning experience on Deflected Double Weave. This is an on-loom workshop, with students weaving a number of samples on their own looms in a structure they’ve chosen for 4 shafts or more. We’ll look at how to vary tie-ups and treadlings for different designs and learn the different techniques for weaving selvages (a unique challenge in Deflected Double Weave). In addition, we will discuss the key principles in designing this graphic, visually intriguing structure and practice creating our own designs with Fiberworks or other weaving software. Students will wind their warps and dress their looms prior to the workshop, ready to begin weaving the first morning.

Neighboring Guilds’ Workshops & Events

Tucson Handweavers & Spinners Guild, Tucson: There are three upcoming workshops. Please direct any questions to Cathy at [email protected].

Coiling on Gourd Baskets with Toni Best, January 16-17, 2020; cost: members $135; nonmembers $165. Undulating coils: Students will coil rows of pine needles on the prepared gourd, then they will take a coil or coils and stitch over (Couch or applique) what has already been woven, creating undulating coils. Split-Shed Weaving with Deborah Silver, February 20-22, 2020; cost: THSG members $150; nonmembers: $225. Break out of blocks with split-shed weaving. Weave curves and blend colorsusing continuous wefts on a four-shaft loom with no special equipment. In this three-day workshop, students will learn to weave multiple combinations of weave structures using only four shafts and a straight threading. Only tie-ups and treadling are changed between samples.

Painting Warps on Looms with Sarah Saulson, March 19-21, 2020; cost: THSG members $195; nonmembers $270. In this dyeing and weaving workshop, we will have lots of spontaneous fun painting warps with fiber reactive dyes, after the loom is warped. This wonderful technique allows weavers to work with color and pattern in a loose, free, expressive way, creating large-scale abstract forms. We will paint enough warp to explore the possibilities of the technique, and for l or 2 scarves.

Desert Weavers and Spinners Guild has two workshops coming up. Please cocntact Ruth

Greenspan [email protected] for details.

Stained Glass Shawl with Patti Barker, February 9, 2020 Patti Barker is a felt wear designer and instructor based in Washington State, and has been selected as the Arizona Federation of Weavers and Spinners Guilds Traveling Teacher for 2020. She will be teaching classes for six guilds in February 2020. Patti’s website is www.pattibarker.com. The stained glass shawl, pictured on the right, is constructed using a nuno felting mosaic technique. This is a one-day class suitable for all levels. Felting can be a vigorous physical activity, and requires hand and arm strength and standing for long periods of time. We will take a lunch break! Painted Warps with Sarah Saulson, March 14-15, 202

Sarah Saulson is a weaver based in Syracuse, NY. She will be teaching in Tucson in March, 2020, and we have an opportunity to share travel expenses with the Tucson Handweavers and Spinners Guild. Sarah’s website is www.sarahsaulson.com. The warp painting class is open to weavers who know the basics of multi-shaft weaving and are confident with warping a loom. Participants need to bring a pre-warped loom to class. The loom can be a floor or table loom. The class is designed for a four- or eight-shaft loom, but can be adapted to a two-shaft or rigid heddle loom as long as the instructor is notified in advance.
