Big data is — well, big, in a word.

Telecom service providers are trying

to best figure out how to leverage the

nearly unfathomable amounts and types

of data pouring from mobile networks,

applications and devices in order to

operate more efficiently, increase revenues

and improve the customer experience.

A recent report from Frost & Sullivan

found that the global big data analytics

market earned $3.2 billion in revenue

in 2013 and expects that figure to reach

$15.1 billion in 2020. Telecom is expect-

ed to be one of the verticals to see strong

penetration of big data analytics.

Telecom companies, and wireless com-

panies in particular, are no strangers to

dealing with enormous amounts of data.

Internal data comes from three main

sources for telcos: their networks, their

OSS/BSS systems and devices.

“Big data ultimately is something that

telcos have been dealing with for liter-

ally decades,” said Chris King, senior di-

rector of product marketing for network,

cloud and analytics products for Oracle

Communications, noting that telecom

has had to work with large databases of

structured data for years. “It’s a problem

that can be categorized by either an enor-

mous volume of information, or a change

in velocity of the data — coming at a more

rapid rate, so you’re having to deal with

high speeds of data coming at you.

“Analytics is really the art, and the sci-

ence, of figuring out how to extract the

value out of all of my data,” King said.

Elisabeth Rainge, research VP of IDC’s

Communications Service Provider Op-

erations research program, noted that

in particular, revenue assurance has

traditionally been an area where tele-

com operators have excelled in the use

of data. Now, she added, technology has

advanced so that telecom companies are

no longer limited to basic uses of call

data records (CDRs) and systems can

support greater processing speeds and

capacity, which is enabling the shift to-

ward big data.

“There’s just a lot more you can do with

the computer platforms,” Rainge said.

Four things are changing in a big data

world, commonly called the four Vs,

Rainge added: the volume of data, the

velocity or speed of that data, and the

variety of data that is available — all

of which contribute to the fourth V, the

value of the data. Each of those aspects

have implications across a carrier’s busi-

ness, and telecom operators are seeking

to apply big data analytics to three areas

in particular: their networks, their mar-

keting and their customer care.

Big data: of the network, by the network,

for the network

In the constant quest to run their net-

works more efficiently to cut costs, and

more reliably to improve customer ex-

perience, big data analytics offers some

promising tools for mobile operators.

However, the task is far from simple.

For one thing, it’s prohibitively expen-

sive and practically impossible to moni-

tor everything in wireless networks, and

while storage has gotten less costly, tele-

com operators can’t simply collect and

save everything.

“A lot of data from the network is not

so interesting but needs to be captured

because it needs to be quickly analyzed

to see if the record is of value to save

for trend analysis, or if it is of no value

and can be thrown away,” said Thomas

Vasen, VP of product management and

marketing at DigitalRoute. DigitalRoute

has more than 300 customers through

direct relationships and through OEMs,

which white-label its analytics solution.

DigitalRoute does data analysis so that

companies are only storing data that is

of use — since storage costs money, af-

ter all — or aggregates the data and for-

wards results.

“Storing everything just creates a big

headache. You have to store the right

things. That is much more realistic,”

he added.

“[Operators] can’t afford to grow their

analytics in linear fashion with their

growth of network capacity,” said Scott

Register, senior director of network vis-

ibility product management for Ixia.

“What they want is not monitoring and

analytics tools that tell you, ‘everything

is great’ or ‘everything is great but 2% of

connections have problems.’ They want

to understand how to focus analytics and

data collection to that 2%.”

Rob Marson, strategic marketing manag-

er at JDSU, echoed the thought that service

providers have reached the point where

the expansion of data growth has outpaced

their ability to profit from it. What opera-

tors need, he said, is the ability to make

data-based decisions at a larger scale and

more affordably collect data from more

and more locations in the network.

Further complicating the issue is that

networks are getting less predictable.

“The reality is, as everything moves to

IP, including mobile networks, the pre-

dictability that you previously had when

everything was circuit-switched or TDM-

based, has disappeared,” Marson said.

The data is more meshed in nature, he

added, and includes applications that are

extremely latency sensitive. Meanwhile,

trends such as “Internet of Things” con-

nectivity are creating a more dynamic en-

vironment with many sudden spikes and

dips in traffic patterns.

John Reister, VP of marketing and

product for Vasona Networks, agreed. Va-

sona focuses on using data and analytics

to diagnose and solve congestion at the

cell sector level, and Reister said that de-

mand fluctuates very rapidly in modern

wireless networks.

“I don’t think that’s fully perceived

across the industry,” Reister said, adding

that operators are often seeing 15-minute

intervals of reporting for hundreds or

thousands of cell sectors. A single cell

site often has three or six sectors, and

some have as many as 12, and hand off

to one another frequently as users move

between sectors at a macro site.

Longer intervals of network polling

give a general demand view that starts

to rise around 6 a.m. and fluctuates a bit

over the course of the day, then tapers

off around midnight, Reister said — but

it doesn’t reflect significant spikes and

valleys that occur in single sectors in ex-

tremely brief time intervals and can still

cause bad user experiences.

“We’ve seen in the field that capacity

can vary by over 50% from one second to

the next,” Reister said. This can happen

even if a user is stationary and close to

the cell site, he added, because another

user enters the cell farther away. “When

you get the valleys, the cell is underuti-

lized; with the spikes, the cell is congest-

ed and causing bad experiences.” Vasona

takes the approach of smoothing out the

extremes by recognizing latency-sensi-

tive traffic such as video and prioritizing

it over email syncing and background

app updates.

Four major trends in networks have

implications for big data-based manage-

ment of networks:

• The continued evolution to LTE

networks, including Voice over LTE

• Increasingly heterogeneous net-

works that include small cells

and Wi-Fi

• Software-defined networking

(SDN) and network function

virtualization (NFV)

• Internet of Things/Machine-

to-Machine

Automation is already being regularly

implemented in turning up services, ac-

cording to Scott Sumner, VP of solutions

development and marketing at Accedian

Networks, which provides data primarily

on network layers 2 and 3. Provisioning

end points so that turn-up testing and

benchmarking for new sites — such as

small cells — is done automatically, or

that new services are turned on for en-

terprise or residential customers, is an

area where the sheer number of end-

points and the low revenues associated

with them have meant clear benefits for

automation, he said.

Network analytics, Sumner said, will

become increasingly important for SDN

networks. For SDN to work optimally,

SDN controllers need to have the ability

to map and correlate the physical net-

work and the virtual network, and use

data in order to enable efficient provision

and routing.

Rainge of IDC noted that the same

technological advances in the speed and

capacity of chips and servers that are

driving big data, are also tied to the ad-

vance of SDN.

Pre-deployment testing tools and

analysis are also going to be important in

SDN, according Ixia’s Register, including

Device-based analytics not only provides

broader reach at any time of day, Tanner

noted, but also avoids some of the issues

that limit network-based data.

“When you do [drive testing], you can’t

really see a lot of the problems that hap-

pen in the network, simply because the

subscriber may not be in reach of the net-

work when something happens,” Tanner

said. “There might be changeover prob-

lems. They might be roaming.” At the de-

vice level, he noted, information is still

available regardless of what network the

device is on. Small cells also pose a chal-

lenge for drive testing, as they may cover

areas that are not reachable by car.

Meanwhile, although there has been

much talk of self-organizing, self-healing

networks, the question remains as to

how much control operators are willing

to cede to data-centered systems, or how

long it might take them to get comfort-

able with the idea.

“Most operators like to be in con-

trol over how changes are made, where

changes are made,” said Vasen of Digit-

alRoute. “They would rather have alarms

and recommendations, and have a hu-

man deciding if it really makes sense to

do this.”

Vasen cautioned that particularly for net-

work operations, the number of actions

that can be taken in real time are limited.

“To actually increase capacity and be

able to adjust resources, very often it in-

volves physical tasks that need to happen

or moving hardware around. An analytics

report doesn’t need to be in real time for

that, it needs to be in time enough.”

Shaping customer experience is one of

the main goals of big data analytics for

the network, and it’s worth noting that

that can mean either improving it, or

cutting losses through processes such

as throttling (although carriers may not

like to talk about it). Analytics are part

of either tactic, noted Shahid Ahmed,

managing director for Accenture’s North

American communications industry and

network practice.

For example, he said, wireless carriers

that practice throttling “don’t just pick

customers randomly based on tonnage.”

Analytics are at work in their throttling

decisions, just as they are in ensuring

that high-quality, profitable customers

have good quality of service.

One other area that may substantially

impact network analytics is the antici-

pated activity in the Internet of Things/

machine-to-machine connectivity. Ahmed

went so far as to say that value of IoT is

fundamentally linked to analytics.

“The value of IoT is less around con-

necting a bunch of home settings and

thermostats — that doesn’t add any val-

ue until you put some analytics behind

it,” Ahmed said. If a company has an

IoT offering, he added, “you shouldn’t

even call it an IoT platform without

analytics. It’s just a connectivity plat-

form, without analytics.”

the analysis of both physical and virtual

systems such as firewalls to understand

the impact of virtualization — questions

such as, will 10 virtual machines have to be

deployed for every one physical machine?

Along with the networking environment

changes that are expected to come with

SDN/NFV, telecom operators are also ar-

chitecting networks that not only involve

data from macro cellular sites, but small

cells and Wi-Fi. This raises issues both in

terms of not only more network points

to monitor, but also whether the differ-

ent infrastructure types can be unified in

terms of the data they provide — even if,

as in the case of Wi-Fi, the technology is

different than cellular.

“If you get dramatically different data

in different networking environments,

it’s going to be really hard for you to un-

derstand,” Register said.

Small cells may be particularly reliant

on things like device-based analytics, ac-

cording to Michael Tanner, vice president

of products and marketing for CarrierIQ.

The company’s device-based solution is

deployed on more than 200 million devic-

es globally and involves the processing

of petabytes of data per month, accord-

ing to Tanner. Data includes the type of

devices, battery information including

the impact of various applications, signal

strength and proximity to cell zone.

Drive testing provides some similar

data, he noted, but typically is done on

a much smaller scale due to expense.

Marketing to moving targets

Mobile marketing is one area that is

gaining particular interest and investment

in big data approaches — and an area

where telecom companies seem to be

more willing to experiment than they are

with their networks.

“What big data analytics is really doing for

marketing is greatly increasing the granu-

larity, the rate and the scale with which it’s

possible to perform marketing,” said Olly

Downs, chief data scientist for Globys,

which focuses on mobile marketing and

analytics for mobile operators.

“It’s changing the level of measur-

ability. ... It’s giving new insight on the

impact on business performance that

marketing can have. And it’s also ...pro-

viding very rich new insights to market-

ers on how their customers actually be-

have and respond.”

Downs said that big data is allow-

ing more precise target definition within

the customer base, based on interactions

over time, and speeding up the experi-

mental design process. “The great limita-

tion in the marketing process has been the

marketer’s ability to actually define the

indivudal A/B tests to allow them to test

the hypotheses they have about how cus-

tomers will respond,” Downs said. “And

one of the big changes that’s happening is

the automation and great enrichment of

this experimental design process, which

allows marketers to focus back on the

creative elements.”

Mobile marketers are looking beyond the

well-worn use case of sending a Starbucks

coupon to a customer near a Starbucks lo-

cation, to more sophisticated approaches.

Xeuming Luo is the Charles Gilliland

Distinguished Professor of Marketing at

Temple University and the director of

its Global Center for Big Data in Mobile

Analytics. He and two co-authors pub-

lished a paper earlier this year looking

at the impact of “geo-conquesting” or

combative marketing: the targeting of

customers who are near a competitor’s

location rather than near a retailer’s own

location. Luo and his colleagues were

able to enlist the cooperation of a mo-

bile service provider for a randomized

field trial in a large city in China, offering

a movie ticket voucher via SMS at two

competing movie theaters and a neutral

location about halfway in between. SMS

containing different levels of discounting

were sent to customers within about 200

meters of the three locations.

“Whereas investments in physical loca-

tion once allowed competing retailers to

keep one another at arm’s length, mobile

technologies allow a company to main-

tain a presence anywhere — including

on a competitor’s doorstep,” according

to the paper, which went on to say that

“using real-time locational targeting,

marketers can offer deep discounts to

consumers near a competitor while pre-

serving margins on sales to consumers

near their own locations.”

The study confirmed that offensive

mobile targeting did indeed reap posi-

tive results, but that deeper discounts

needed to be offered in order to get

customers at a competitor’s location to

switch their plans.

Context, Luo told RCR, is the difference

between an offer that’s of interest and

one the consumer will consider spam.

“That’s really the marketer’s dream:

that moment when you push the right op-

portunity, in the right place, at the right

time, to the right customer,” he said. “At

the wrong time, it’s just spamming.”

Internet companies are advancing the

use of analytics far beyond what telcos

have so far.

“If you think about how other indus-

tries use analytics, they’re ahead in terms

of sophistication and ability to deal with

data,” said King of Oracle. “I think tel-

cos are becoming more and more aware

of that, so now they’re in the process of

catching up.”

Telecom companies, he noted, were

granted monopolies back in the days

when they existed as landline telephone

companies, essentially on the condition

that they be “trusted entities.” That sense

of responsibility and conservatism re-

mains, as well as reluctance to take risks

that might alienate their customer base.

for OSS at Ericsson and responsible for

the Expert Analytics product that the

company launched earlier this year, said

that in the past, marketers could look at

segments based on their monthly usage

and their device, as well as demographic

information and experiment with pricing

on the consumption of services.

“Now, with the big data approach and

real-time approach, you can look at

more detailed segments, how the ser-

vices are being used, what kind of con-

tent is being drawn over the network,”

Lilley said. “There are some privacy is-

sues that have to be addressed, that’s

clear from both a market and a regu-

latory point of view … but you can do

quite a lot without invading privacy.”

Telecom companies have additional

regulatory requirements in terms of

privacy. Big data and privacy in the

modern telecom environment have

been the subject of recent inquiry and

exploration by the White House and the

NTIA (see sidebar on CTIA’s comments

to NTIA on big data and privacy).

There have been missteps by Internet

companies. Facebook’s nudging of us-

ers to install a second Messenger app for

communications purposes has been met

with some resistance due to the large

number of permissions it requires us-

ers to accept, raising privacy concerns.

Internet and mobile ratings company

comScore recently settled a $14 million

class-action lawsuit regarding the bun-

dling of its tracking software with apps,

and the sale of harvested information to

third parties without sufficient notice

and control to users.

Telecom operators are perhaps right to

be cautious in this arena when it comes

to the use of personal information. Some,

like DigitalRoute — which works with

SAP to provide de-personalized big data

from telecom networks to the HANA

cloud, which SAP pays operators for and

then analyzes and processes before offer-

ing it to third parties — are bullish on the

opportunity for a new revenue stream.

“This is a completely new type of busi-

ness model for the operator, where they

can capitalize on data that they had pre-

viously completely ignored,” Vasen said.

Other companies, like Amdocs and Ixia,

have stuck to the path of analytics for op-

erators’ own use in streamlining opera-

tions and creating revenue from better

marketing and more agile services.

Still, the market pressures from OTT

and Internet players certainly exist.

“I think from an operator’s perspec-

tive, they need to move faster,” said

Carla Fitzgerald, chief marketing officer

for Smith Micro Software. “The rest of

the online world is already moving to

marketing and customer engagement

and business models that are going

to be built on big data. They’re going

to be able to understand, on an up-to-

the-second basis, where is my market,

what are they doing, how can I be there

in the right place at the right time on

the right device with the right offer?

Operators are moving very slowly right

now. They need to catch up.

“They have to be careful not to betray

that trust and loyalty that they have

with their subscribers — but they can

do more,” Fitzgerald added.

She gave the example of Sprint, which

is a client of Smith Micro’s and provides

a visual voice mail app that is the de-

fault for the carrier. Even without know-

ing the content of individuals’ personal

voicemails, Carla noted, carriers can

draw many useful insights from merely

knowing when people are logging in and

out of the app, and where they are when

they access their voicemails.

“It’s not just about the buying experi-

ence, it’s about how people choose to

interact with each other that the opera-

tor can know a lot about without being

limited to any one app — it’s not just Fa-

cebook messaging, it’s all the ways you

can communicate on the phone or the

tablet,” she said.

Beyond better mobile marketing, bet-

ter monetization of the network also

includes things like more rapid creation

and provisioning of new services.

“The really big area that we see grow-

ing and moving forward from the opera-

tor side are the services themselves —

creating new services, and optimizing

those services using analytics coming

from the device,” said Brian Deely, se-

nior director of product management

for Smith Micro Software. This is also

an area that is dovetailing with IoT, he

added, and Smith Micro has been doing

work in enabling closed-loop systems

with analytics contributing to feedback

loops from the device perspective.

For all the potential upside, however,

there are significant costs and transfor-

mation associated with moving to big

data systems as well. Frost & Sullivan

recently pegged deployment costs for

big data at six to seven figures.

Traditional data warehousing has

taken the approach of looking back

and analyzing events that have already

happened, noted Matthew Roberts, mar-

keting director for Amdocs. In order to

move to real-time or near-real-time sys-

tems, he said, companies have to have

both the big data platform in place as

well as analytics use cases. Amdocs, he

said, is poised to release a catalog of ap-

plications that provide those types of

utility to service providers.

“I think the real benefits from big data

are making those little, incremental

improvements to processes that over

time, turn out to be an evolution for a

company,” Roberts said.

Jeff Edlund, CTO of HP’s communica-

tions and media solutions group, said

that if operators want to convert sub-

scribers from OTT services and onto

ones that they design and control, they

have to have a better understanding of

lifestyle trends and habits — which they

can get from leveraging big data.

“They need to start evolving them-

selves from communication service

providers to content service providers,”

said Edlund. “In order to do that, they

need to understand consumers’ com-

munication, mobile and data and they

need to be able to propose personalized

plans, personalized content offers so

that they can increase ARPU.”

Edlund said his company’s big data

solutions such as Next Best Offer rely

on contextual information such as loca-

tion, time of day and a customer’s pro-

file information to serve up ads — for

example, recognizing that a user is at a

NASCAR race and is a Jeff Gordon fan.

Edlund offered up an interesting take

on the predictability of customer user

patterns and the longevity of necessary

data, saying that HP has found that even

if a user profile is thrown out entirely,

users’ habits are so ingrained that that

a minimal amount of observation can

rebuild an accurate profile.

“You are who you are, no matter how

hard you try to fake the system out or

become someone different. We could

completely obliterate the profile and

within about 20 days of watching the way

that you use your services and your digi-

tal life, we can re-match you back to the

original profile,” Edlund said.

“You are who you are — you can’t

change it.”

Customizing customer care

Carl-Johan Nilsson, business develop-

ment manager for CEM at Ericsson, said

that more intelligent back-end systems

that rely on analytics are important for

providing end users with more sophisti-

cated self-care options, and “to help the

end user have better access to informa-

tion on how to get better services, more

advice than on what product to buy.

“The whole lifecycle from a customer’s

perspective can be improved by having

the right information available,” Nilsson

said. Customer care analytics, with an

eye toward both self-care and quicker call

resolution, were part of Ericsson’s Expert

Analytics launch earlier this year.

Testing and service assurance company

Spirent Communications acquired DAX

Technologies earlier this year for its big

data capabilities for pulling in data from

disparate sources and processing it for,

among other applications, customer care.

In that arena, big data analytics can make

a significant difference in solving complex

issues that have been elevated through

customer care levels, according to Thom-

as Russo, general manager at Spirent.

Russo said that the system provides

dashboard information and is based on

a level of automation that examines ex-

isting data for the customer, user data

at the time in question and its potential

relationship to similar trouble tickets,

and comes up with a best guess as to

the underlying issue.

“What our system allows that agent to

do is quickly see, is this person likely ex-

periencing a coverage issue, a signaling

issue, a device issue, a provisioning is-

sue,” he said. “This use case is all about

reducing call-handling time.”

Howard Stevens, global head of mo-

bile for SAP, said his company has been

part of the enabling of T-Mobile US’ “un-

carrier” strategy. Because T-Mobile US

has eliminated long-term contracts, he

said, “they are going to have to get much

closer to their customers. In a saturated

market, you’ve got to get closer to your

own customers and you’ve got to under-

stand them better and be more relevant

to them, and more timely.”

T-Mobile US has slashed half a dozen

marketing platforms down to one, Ste-

vens said, which is cloud-based and

provided by SAP and allows the compa-

ny to create new marketing offers 80%

faster using 10% of the sources that it

previously took.

He pointed to T-Mobile US’ most-recent

churn results, in which it pushed churn

down to 1.5% postpaid and 4.5% prepaid.

“In a saturated market, those are ex-

traordinary numbers,” Stevens said. It’s

also worth noting that T-Mobile is see-

ing particular success in the prepaid

market recently, and US’s CEO John

Legere expects the company to surpass

Sprint in size of total customer base by

the end of this year.

Still, OTT providers are much more

sophisticated in proactive customer care,

according to Vasen of DigitalRoute.

Vasen said that he’s experienced times

when Amazon detected a poor network

CTIA On Big Data And Privacy

CTIA recently was among dozens of commenters responding to

the National Telecommunications and Information Administration

(NTIA)’s request for input on the big data and privacy report put

forth by the White House Office of Science and Technology, as well

as the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology

report on technology, privacy and big data.

“Big data analytics is part of the most recent wave of technologi-

cal innovation that promises tremendous benefits to consumers

and society across a range of industry sectors,” CTIA said. The

group cited several examples of wireless operators’ use of big

data and analytics, including the analyzing of aggregated cus-

tomer call information to identify confusing menu options and

monitoring of dropped call logs in real time in order to locate and

prioritize outages.

Among CTIA’s positions on big data and privacy:

• CTIAsaiditsmemberssupportfederallegislationondatasecu-

rity and breach notification. This is an area were current legisla-

tion varies from state to state on whether or not users must be

notified if their personal information is compromised.

tion to clarify and appropriately limit the type of data that leg-

islation would cover.” CTIA says that legislation “should not

cover network data that carriers use to protect their network

and improve performance,” nor should it apply to publicly

available data such as census information.

CTIA said that reasonably anonymized data is highly unlikely to be

re-identified and presents a low level of risk due to the time, effort

and expense involved in re-identification efforts.

“If legislation or regulators require perfect anonymity, consumers

will not enjoy the potentially transformative social and economic

benefits of data-driven innovation,” CTIA said.

Notifications for consumers are increasingly more complex than

traditional “notice and choice” rules account for, CTIA noted, with

the usage of data likely to evolve over time.

“Companies are expected, at the time of data collection, to

give consumers notice of (among other things) the data they

collect, the purpose for which they collect it, and the entities

with whom they will share it,” CTIA said in its comment. “Com-

panies are expected to use the data only for those purposes

for which they collected the data, and they are expected to offer

consumers choices about how their information may be used

for secondary purposes.

“One of the defining characteristics of data-driven innovation, how-

ever, is that companies will not always be able to predict at the

time of collection all of the possible beneficial uses of data that

they may discover in the future. In addition, non-consumer-facing

companies that increasingly obtain large amounts of consumer

data are not in a position to interact directly with, and provide no-

tice and choice to, consumers. ... Requiring companies to contact

consumers to update their consent each time they use data for

a new purpose similarly could prevent companies from launch-

ing new services. In addition, frequent notices in the context of

ubiquitous data collection and big data analytics likely would be

unhelpful, burdensome and intrusive to customers and would im-

pede the delivery of the data-driven products and services con-

sumers want,” CTIA concluded, arguing instead in support of a

“respect for context” approach with an attitude of transparency

and individual control.

“As the White House Privacy Blueprint explained, the ‘respect for

context’ principle allows changes in the relationship between the

consumer and the company ‘over time in ways not foreseeable at

the time of collection,’ and enables ‘adaptive uses of personal data

[that] may be the source of innovations that benefit consumers.’”

Companies should be able to infer consent based on a user’s

request for certain services, and to improve those services, CTIA

said, adding “as companies develop new products and services,

including those that relate to the Internet of Things, it may be

necessary to find new ways to disclose data practices that matter

to consumers.”

CTIA went on to suggestion that consumers understand that an

app that gives suggestions for restaurants that are close by needs

access to the subscriber’s location information.

“It would not be desirable to the consumer to receive just-in-time

notice and choice before the app accessed geolocation data for the

purpose of providing recommendations, as such notice would create

unnecessary friction in the user experience and over time desensi-

tize the consumer to any valuable consumer protection,” CTIA said.

little control over the network itself.

Telecom operators, he said, don’t take

a similar proactive approach to soothing

ruffled feathers of users who have

dropped calls and data sessions.

“They don’t take any proactive action,”

Vasen said. “That’s a real pity. It’s not

because the technology is not there, it’s

because the processes are not there.”

Ulla Koivakoski, senior vice president of

analytics for Comptel, said that the com-

pany’s operator customers face the twin

challenges of top-line declines and invest-

ment needs increasing and are looking to

big data to help solve those issues.

“Everybody is looking at how they can

make more money from their customers,

and how they can automate their pro-

cesses to become more efficient,” Koiva-

koski said. She added that while churn

is of concern to everyone in the industry,

operating expenses are as well.

“You can be throwing money away if

you pay the customer to stay; to pay is

not sustainable,” she said. Analytics of-

fers the opportunity to examine custom-

er behavior more closely, identify those

who might be at risk of churning and

perhaps offer incentives other than dis-

counts, helping carriers protect margins.

A Comptel-commissioned survey of

6,000 international mobile users last

year looked at both customer service

opportunities and revenue possibilities.

It showed that many users did want more

attention from their service providers,

even if it was in the form of an apology

when service quality declined. In fact,

90% wanted personalized interactions and

more than three-quarters said that “one

way mobile operators can improve their

personal interactions with customers it by

proactively recognizing and acknowledging

poor service quality when it happens.”

The Comptel survey also showed that

40% of consumers said they would be

more likely to purchase additional con-

tent or services when they had just been

paid, giving operators something more

to think about in terms of offer timing.

However, the survey also showed just

how fine a line operators can walk with

marketing: more than 80% of prepaid

users said they’d be glad to receive of-

fers from their mobile operator, but al-

most a third of them wanted only very

precisely targeted offers or operators

risked their dissatisfaction.

Most experts across the ecosystem

agreed that the application of big data and

analytics to the wireless industry is still in

its early days. But, SAP’s Stevens said, he

expects to see some large carriers move

past proof-of-concept stages for big data

implementations and into large-scale im-

plementations by the end of this year.

“I think we’re past the point of it being

just a good idea,” Stevens said. “In real-

ity, we’re still in the hype phase, but it’s

becoming a reality.”

consumer concerns and regulations

about privacy while maintaining

flexibility for their business opera-

tions and opportunities.
