Hityashvut, Kibbutz Qaluyot, Halutzlyut — arethese ideas relevant in the 80's? Tuval's answer Is anunquestionable yes!

Tuval Is a new kibbutz, only eight months old, inthe Western Galil, on a hill overlooking the Akko-Safed road. The kibbutz is made up of three garinim— two Habonim garinim from South Africa andBritain with the third an Israel Taofim Garin.

Presently, there are 55 people on Tuval of whom14 are originally from South Africa. There are another5 South Africans on ulpan at Kibbutz Matzuba andthey will be on Tuval from September, A furthergroup of 10 South Africans is due to arrive inJanuary. The South Africans are very involved withinthe kibbutz and many of the tafkidim, both in workbranches and on Va'adot, are held by SouthAfricans. In addition, we've succeeded in developinga n i n t e r n a t i o n a l d e m a n d f o r S o u t h A f r i c a nchocolates — biltong is proving somewhat more diffi c u l t !

The kibbutz has very little agricultural land, beingsituated in a hilly area. Our economy, therefore, isplanned to be predominantly based on industry, At

present , we have a (u l ( for meat) , hothouses ( forexport of geranium cuttings), some field crops andflowers. We also assemble photographic boxes forKibbutz Amiad. Because of the shortage of land andour infant stage of development, finding work for allour haverim is problematic. For this reason, groupsof haver im have worked o f f the k ibbu tz and w i l l ,unfortunately, need to, in future. Although our industrial future is already determined, we are onlynow beginning to look for suitable industries.

Building a new kibbutz is far more than mereeconomic development. We are building a newsociety with all the challenges that go with it. We havedecided to base our society less on rules and moretrust and therefore we have special arrangements tofit that pattern. Haverim do not receive a personalbudget — all necessities such as soap, toothpaste,etc., are freely available and money for off-the-kibbutz expenses (travelling, etc.) is in an open boxand haverim take according to their needs. There isno set number of days hofeeh that each haver cantake, so each takes according to his need, bearing inmind the particular situation in his anaf.

Moulding a society out of the people we have, withdifferent backgrounds, ideas and ages, is no meantask. We try to take cognisance of our differences, attempting to bridge the gap without ignoring the realdispar i t ies.

Tuval provides a unique opportunity to its haverimto build their own society on our barren hilltop and,by so doing, help to develop the Galil.

What do you do when your freezer goes on theblink? You literaiiy freeze up because of the joylessstories you've heard about having to wait for hours,even days, for repairmen to turn up. So it was withsome trepidation that i listened to my fridge service-firm teli me that someone would come during themorning. The day wore on, my patience wore outand by mid-afternoon, hopping mad, I was ready tocommit murder. And then, i got a phone call from awoman who asked-me my name and address andwhether I had complained about my freezer. When Ialmost snapped "yes," she very politely apologisedfor the delay in the arrival of the repairmen and askedme to wait at the phone for a few minutes. She rangback almost immediately to say that the technicianswere on their way

The sun was already setting when they arrived:they explained that by a most unfortunate combination of "fashiot", not only was there a wrong name onmy order, but the "petek" with my address couldn'tbe found! Instead of packing up and going home,however, the repairmen asked their office to phoneail their customers in my area, this being their onlyclue, in case someone knew me.

Weii, somebody did, and the repairmen spentabout 3 hours fixing my freezer. They were obviouslygenuinely upset at the incident and we parted company on the best of terms, and my freezer efficientlymaking up for lost time!

This 'lighter side' story starts with a truck driverand Robyn — tall, slim, well put together, attractive,jauntily walking along Tel Aviv's Dov Hos street,ready to laugh with the world.

It goes on with Dov Hos Street — originally a narrow lane that somehow didn't expand with growlng-up Tei Aviv, it merely got Itself macadamised andpavemented but remained in essence a small, albeitvery busy narrow street carrying heavy traffic. SoRobyn goes her way along Dov Hos keeping pacewith the snail-crawling traffic.

Suddenly, an ear-splitting wolf-whistle drowns outthe noise of revving engines and out of the side window of a huge soft-drink truck pops the handsomehead of the driver. Eyes agoggie, he whistles againand calls out in good colloquial Hebrew: "What abeauty! Hey! Miss Charm, come and join me on thef r o n t s e a t . . . . 1 "

Robyn, with haughty yet smiling disregard, keepswalking alongside the slow-moving truck. All at once— TRA-A-A-CH! and in a second there is chaos as

dislodged empty bottles crash on to Dov Hos. Robyncontinues, apparently oblivious of the chaos she hasindirectly caused yet smiling broadly. The driver, forhis part, inspects the mess, shakes his head andsays with philosophical good nature; "That's whatcan happen when one of our smashing girls comesalong!"

Eighty years ago — the same year as the foundingof the Keren Kayemeth L'Israel — the late MosesZuckerman of Cape Town, with the help of his wifeRebecca, founded the fi rs t women 's Z ion is torganisation in South Africa. They called it the BnothZion Association, to match Dorshei Zion, the alreadyexisting men's Zonist society, Since then, the BZAhas expanded enormously and for several generations has been and continues to be the vehicle forZionist expression and education, with the accent onthe work of WIZO, the Jewish National Fund andYouth Aliyah.

Recently, a group of people (see photo above)met in Netanya. This meeting "happened" as a resultof a request from the BZA in Cape Town for formerchairmen of the association to send reminiscences ofhighlights of their terms of office to Cape Town foruse at its 80th birthday celebration, which takesplace in August 1981 and at which Mrs RuthIzakson, chairman of World WIZO Israel, is guestspeaker. So interesting were the reminiscences that aspontaneous suggestion was made to hold an 80thbirthday celebration alto in ierael. Out of this wasborn the idea of a get-together of Bnoth Zion Association members who live in Israel and who are in-vited to attend (see notice immediately below).

A practising lawyer inJerusalem, he is chairman of the Israel Chamber ofAdvocates. He recently addressed members of theH.O.D. Lodge Moledet and other S.A. olim under theauspices of Lodge Moledet and Telfed's Ra'ananaArea Committee.

Adv Lankin was arrested by the British Mandatoryauthorities, deported and imprisoned in Kenya. Afterescaping to France, he went to Palestine. He madeZionist histoiy as the commander of the ship"Altalena" which carried arms to Palestine during thelast phase of the mandatory regime.

His South African-born wife Doris is also a lawyerand, for many years, has written the legal column inthe JERUSALEM POST, She is we l lknown for herexploits as an underground fighter and is author ofthe book, "The Lady was a Terrorist."

Mr. Lankin said that in Israel the minority Arabpopulation, with the backing of the PLC, wants to ruleover the Jewish majority with the avowed intention ofannihilating the Jewish State. In no other country inthe world does a parallel situation exist.

The biennial "Telfed" picnic and the annual HaifaYom Ha'atzmaut picnic, both have a common fault.Most participants find that with all possible goodwilland, at times, even herculean effort, one never getsround to meeting all the old friends that you have notmet for ever so long. There just is not enough time fora "gesels" with everyone, When you do meet up, it'snot for iong enough to "catch up", before one oranother of you will nilly has to.make off and exchange pleasantries with yet another long lost acquaintance. And then, when day is done, and theequipment is being packed, prior to departure, thenames of several of those whom you saw from afarand did not have time to talk to, come to mind. Alas,t o o l a t e !

You can now overcome this difficulty by decidingto book for the "South African Week" to be held inNahariya from Tuesday, December 22, through toSunday, December 27 {during the Hanukah holidays). Accommodation will be arranged at a well-known 3-star hotel and wil l include full board. Alsoorganized are activities, entertainment and tiyulim tosurrounding areas of interest. The project is underthe joint auspices of the Haifa Regional Committee ofthe South African 2onist Federation, the NahariyaMunicipality and Nahariya Hotel Keepers.

To accompany Cheree Bloch of the Haifa office onany one of her 'huisbesoek' trips is always enlightening. Going along with her recently on a visit to Segevwe ended up at Moshav Shechaniya. Recentlychanged in status from a Moshav Shitufi to a MoshavOvdim, this fledgeling settlement on the crest of ahilltop is within easy walking distance of the betterknown Manof.

Shechanya, too. has a South African flavour.Although there is housing for some thirty families, thepresent population numbers a mere 14 of whom thegreatest number hail from the Republic,

We arrived at Shechaniya about mid-day on a hotJuly day. The cool mountain air was refreshing andinvigorating as we made our way over the local store.

The member with whom we spent a pleasant hourwas brimful of enthusiasm for Shechaniya's potential. "Of course there are difficulties". He told us ofother enterprises including inter alia sheep farming,the cultivation of poppies and the manufacture ofeducational puzzles. He Is optimistic about the future,a future which can be shared and is easily availableto young families with children.

The facilities of Dadu Beach usually available formore public use had an exclusively South Africanaura on Thursday night July 16th when a crowd ofHaifaites and a few "uitlanders" from Tel Aviv met fora typical braai. The air was filled with the pungentaroma of grilled boerewors and the sounds ofb o e r e m u s i e k .

The occasion for this get together was ourhonorary president Louis Shapiro's 70th birthday.

Tributes to Louis who came on aliya over fourdecades ago were paid by Soiiy Friedman anothervatik, who hails from Louis' home town, Strand, andH e r t z e l K a t z , Te i f e d c h a i r m a n , a n e v e r w e l c o m eguest at all Haifa functions.

A discussion evening recently arranged at the NofHotel by one of the large banks, dealt withproblems in matters of money facing the Oleh andVatik in Israel's inflation ridden economy.

S.A. OLIM IN MACCABI BOWLS TEAM

There is no doubt that S.A. olim, both men and women(80% of the Israel Maccabi Bowls teams are S.A. olim),contributed largely towards Israel's success in the Ivtaccat^iBowls Championships where they positively scintillated,winning gold, silver and bronze medals for Israel.

Respective captains of the two men's teams were CecilBransky and Sam Skudowitz and the manager for bothteams was Aubrey Berman — all S.A. olim.

Israel's Men's 5, consisting of Cecil Branaky (SA), MattGordon (Canada), Jack Trappier (SA), Natle Lazarua(SA) and Jack Rabin (SA) won the Max Spitz InternationalTrophy, competed for for the first time at these MaccabiG a m e s .

Mid-October this year will see the opening of the newKfar Maccabi Bowls Club for play. The club is now open tomembership, according to Louis Gecolter, the Chairman.

On July 8, during the Maccabi Games, the TotsRubenstein Bowling G reen was officially opened at KfarMaccabi and more than 350 guests and dignitaries frommany countries were present at a well-organised anddignified function.

Arthur Goldman, president of South African Maccabi,spoke about Tots Rubenstein, the man. Max Spitz, Israel^wling Asscn President, welcomed the Kfar MaccabiBowling Club to the Israel bowls scene. Michael Kevehazi,Chairman, Kfar Maccabi Board and Chairman, OrganisingCommittee for the 11th Maccabi Games, said that "bowls isyet another facility at Kfar Maccabi where new olim andIsraelis can mix and play Anglo-Saxon sport". (Last year,four squash courts were opened at Kfar Maccabi.)

So said Max Spitz, President, Israel National BowlingAssociation, at the official opening of the Ra'anana CityBowling Club on July 13. Present were many d ignitaries, including the South African Ambassador. Mr. D.S. Franklin,the Mayor of Ra'anana, Mr. Binjamln Woifowitz, both ofwhom also addressed the large crowd of about 200 guests,including, officials of the local Municipality and SportsFoundation, representatives of Israel's Bowling Clubs,b o w l e r s o f I s r a e l a n d m e m b e r s o f M a c c a b i t e a m s f r o mAustral ia, South Africa. Israel and the U.S.A., and membersof the Club's wonderful and enthusiast ic committee each ofwhom played their part in the attainment of this goal.

A Souvenir Brochure was especially published to markthis major role in the furtherance of bowb in Israel.

The Club's Chairman and his two Vice-Chairmen, addressed the gathering. This was followed by the rolling ofthe first wood by Abe 61k (chairman). The bowling clubwas beautifully lit with candles, not only lighting the greenbut also adding an air of festivity to this grand occasion. Amost delicious and tasty spread, together with drinks of allkinds, was provided.

Thit all augured well for the day the members willcertainly never forget — Tuesday, July 27,1981, whenthe first game of bowls was played on the Ra'ananagreen. A number of people, who have never payed bowlsbefore, are receiving lessons from excellent coaches whohave volunteered their services. South' African olim were prominent in the Badmintoncompet i t ions of the 11th Maccabi Games.

Mike Rappaport trainer, player, captain) was the busiestand most energetic of the Israeli Badminton players. Israelwon silver and bronze medals in the Men's and Ladies'team events, thanks a lot to Mike's enthusiastic coaching.

Bernard Levinaohn was one of the prominent Israeliumpires and officiated in the finals of the individual competition.

Jeff Geffen (chairman) and wife Doreen, were activewith the organising and running of the Badminton competitions. Their son, Yoel, in addition to umpiring, was activewith many "behind the scenes" tasks which go to make abig event successful.

Seymour Fisher and David Singer were tireless aslinesmen during the five days of the competition.

I am writing to you to publicly congratulate KibbutzTzorah on their contribution to the personai happiness of a few of the voiunteers in Israel, as well asdoing a first class public relations job.

Last year, I became friendly with a non-JewishDanish girl who came to Israel as a volunteer andwas sent to Kibbutz Gelil Yam in Herzlia. On arrival,she was met by the organiser of volunteers who assigned her to the kitchen, After that, she, nor any ofthe other voiunteers (all of whom had been put onkitchen duty) had any contact whatsoever with any ofthe members of the kibbutz. She ieft, a very ionely,angry and disillusioned young lady.

In contrast, we have just had a visit from a 22 yearold girl, daughter of cousins in America. She was as-Signed to Kibbutz Tzorah where, not only was everyvolunteer made to feel welcome and at home andwas "adopted" by a kibbutz family, but apparently,individual talents and abilities were catered for as faras possible, so that the volunteers became happyand eager workers.

As a result, our young cousin, Ellen Perlman,spent a very happy month on the kibbutz and talks ofreturning to Israei.

FASHION SHOW FOR DEAF TEENAGERSA group of active women, volunteers, amongst

whom are wiv^s of foreign diplomats, Israeli personalities and others, who call themselves "Friendsof the Helen Keler Boarding School", are organising what promises to be a stunning Fashion andJewellery Show, at Asia House, Tel Aviv, onSeptember 17,1981 at 5 p.m.

The Helen Keller Boarding School houses 66 deafboys and girls, all from indigent homes. It provides ahome for these young people, helps them becomemore Independent, acquire a profession, andenlarge their general knowledge and life experience.

Efforts of the Friends of the Helen Keller BoardingSchool to improve the quality of life of these youngpeople Include the Fashion and Jewellery Show, theproceeds of which will be used to build an efficientkitchen so that the youngsters will have the benefit ofproper meals. At present, they receive warmed-upfood Intended for residents of old peoples' homes.

The programme of this important social event Includes a dance by deaf teenagers, surprises and alottery. Prizes for the latter include exquisite pieces ofjewellery contributed through the generosity of Stern.PadanI, and Lustre: a trip to Amsterdam; a weekendfor two by courtesy of the Hilton Hotel, Tel Aviv aweekend for two by courtesy of the MIgdal HotelJerusalem; an oil painting by Talmor and a Pen-ee-3Camera, donated by Bargard.
