Goal:
I can….tell time to the hour
and half hour.
Things to remember……
• The hour hand is the short hand.
• The minute hand is the longer hand.
• When the minute hand is on the 12,
we say “o’clock.”
• When the minute hand is on the 6,
we say it is “half past.”
Time to the ½ hour can be
written in many ways.
• 3:30
• half past 3
• three thirty
• thirty minutes ‘til 4
• thirty minutes past 3
• 5:30
• half past 5
• five thirty
• thirty minutes ‘til 6
• thirty minutes past 5

important to know
when events occur
and how long
they will last?

To truly practice elapsed time, you need an analog clock that you can move the hands to
help you solve the problems. There are a few things that you can use for this.
1. An analog wrist watch that kids can move the hands forward.
2. An analog clock that you may have sitting on a shelf.
3. Paper clock that you made from the template provided in the copies
document. You may need a brass brad or can even use a tack or screw to
hold the hands in place but still allows them to move.
