Dear Parents, On Friday, 14 February we celebrated the Induction of our School Prefects and Captains supported by parents, our P&C President, Mr Greg Rodgers and past School Prefect and 1968 Vice School Captain, Mr David Wright . Our magnificent Wavell Showband certainly set the scene with a strong performance under the direction of Mr Bell . A delicious morning tea was provided by our hospitality students, supported by their teachers, Mrs Darlington and Ms Deery. Our guest speaker Mr Wright enrolled at Wavell State High School in 1964 after completing his primary education at Nundah State School. In 1968 David was appointed Prefect and School Vice-Captain. After graduating from Wavell High he studied engineering at the University of Queensland. Mr Wright then balanced his engineering career with his involvement in elite sport. In Rugby League, David played fifteen matches for Queensland and represented Australia. After his playing days were over David then became commentator for over thirty years on both the ABC and Channel 10. He called the first three years of Broncos games and then First Grade Queensland competition matches. David’s work resume is very impressive with his highlights being the General Manager of the two- billion dollar Gateway Bridge duplication project and was the Chief Engineer of Queensland Motorways. David spoke highly of his time at school. He used his memories of our school song to highlight how strong the message in those words are key to living a fulfilling and productive life. At the Induction, I spoke of the need to serve in leadership with the right attitude and that not only in leadership but every day we need to live a good life. I shared this piece – a favourite of mine: A Creed to Live By (Author unknown) Don’t undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others, It is because we are different that each of us is special. Don’t set your goals by what other people seem important, Only you know what is best for you. Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart, Cling to that as you would your life, for without them life is meaningless. Don’t let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life. Don’t give up when you still have something to give, Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying. Don’t be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect, It is the fragile thread that binds us to each other. Don’t be afraid to encounter risks, It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave. Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give love. The fastest way to lose love is to hold on too tightly, And the best way to keep love is to give it wings. Don’t dismiss your dreams, To be without dreams is to be without hope. To be without hope is to be without purpose. Don’t run through life so fast that you forget where you’ve been, But also know where you’re going. Life is not a race, but a journey to be savoured every step of the way. Over the past few weeks we have inducted many of our school leaders for 2014. I particularly wish our elected School Captains; Elaine Elevera, Rose Foster , Ryan Honor and Jobird Ualasi well for the contribution and service that they will provide in their leadership roles throughout this year. I thank parents for their attendance at our first P&C meeting, last Tuesday, 18 February. Congratulations to our in-coming P&C Executive and Sub-Committee Executive team members. On Thursday, 20 February I met with our new volunteer tutors for the Wavell Enrichment Program. It is great to have a number of community members willing to support our students’ learning. These roles are important and by assuming positions the school will be provided with much needed ongoing support. It would be great to see some more of our new parents at next month’s P&C meeting. I encourage every parent to participate, whether it is through the P&C, membership on sub- committee, volunteering at the canteen or shop or as a WEP tutor. Your contribution makes a difference to Wavell and it is through your support that our students achieve great results. Year 8 Camp 2014

Wednesday, 25 June until Friday, 27 June The venue is Total Adventures at Noosa North Shore. The price for this year is $250. It is expected that all Year 8 students attend this camp. To pay or make a payment plan please contact Mrs Deb Deaves Business Services Manager: Ph: 33500310.

Welcome to Wavell

“Welcome to Wavell” has always been a great success with everyone involved and this year was no different! It is a chance for Year 8s to have fun and get to know each other, as well as for the Prefects to interact and play games with their form classes, with the support of the Form Teachers. Games varied from Chain Tag to

Numbers but as always, Dodge Ball had the most enthusiastic participation. Free food and drinks were supplied for everyone involved to re-boost their energy levels, before heading off to play the “awesome” Tug-of-War! Prefects unfortunately were not allowed to assist the Year 8s, but some kind souls couldn’t bear not to help. Special thanks to Mrs Hickman, Mrs Madden, the Year 9 Leaders and Prefects for arranging a fantastic afternoon.

Our School Captains and Prefects assisted students to celebrate Valentine’s Day by delivering numerous gifts. These ranged from cards to hearts and roses. Many “romantic” items were presented by the Prefects to surprised and embarrassed students. The singing of romantic songs left “a lot to be desired”, but in the typical Wavell way, the Prefects did their best.

Valentine’s Day

District Swimming

Wavell completed yet another very successful swimming season in 2014 with the school team comprehensively taking out the Central District Trophy for the fifth consecutive year. The District meet was held at the Valley Pool on Tuesday, 18 February. The team took out first place by nearly 1000 points ahead of our closest rivals. Congratulations to the following district age champions: Brianna Thompson (F13yrs) Georgia Cloudsley (F15yrs) Jack Meincke (M15yrs) Thomas Johnston (M16yrs) Rose Foster (F19yrs) Samuel Cloudsley (M19yrs) Wavell also had thirty-five swimmers compete at the recent Metropolitan North Swimming meet on Thursday, 27 February at the Valley Pool. From this event, the Metropolitan North Swim Team was selected and will compete at the State Championships to be held at Chandler on March 27 and 28, 2014. Pictured: Year 8 Interhouse Age Champions Brianna Thompson and Jeremy Bartlett with the District Trophy.

National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence – Friday, 21 March 2014 The focus is on bystander behaviour with students encouraged to:

‘Take a stand together’ against bullying. Our Student Representative Council will launch our school action on Friday, 14 March. Bracelets will be available to support this day. Students will be able to purchase and wear these bracelets until Friday, 21 March.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN PRODUCTS - A CAUTION!

In ITD courses, students are required to complete a number of practical exercises. Once completed, students are permitted to take these items home. Parents need to be aware that the products are the results of a teaching exercise only. They do not and were not intended to conform to Australian Standards and should not be used for their normal practical purposes. Legal opinion suggests that parents would be under an onus to similarly warn any other party accordingly who might try to use the products.

IMMUNISATION REMINDER Thursday 13 March: Chickenpox Immunisation - All Year 8 students HPV Immunisation - All Years 8 & Year 10 male students

Religious Instruction

Instruction is provided to students at Wavell and includes a Year 8 program which runs for five to six weeks, a series of lessons for Year 9s (Term 3) and Year 10s (Term 2), as well as a Religious Assembly for all students each term. This is a non-denominational program provided by members of our local churches. Wavell also has a full time Chaplain, who provides support in religious, spiritual and ethical matters. Parents wishing their child not to participate in the Religious Instruction or the Chaplaincy Program are asked to forward a letter to Ms Bullen, Deputy Principal. Other arrangements will be made for your student.
