2020 Booklists Booklists will be sent home on Monday 4 November. In collaboration with our preferred supplier Schoolstuff, Teachers have spent a great amount of time ensuring the items listed will last throughout the year. For this reason we ask that if you are purchasing the items yourself, please ensure that you select the brands and correct exercise writing books. Students in Prep to Year 4, need the assigned red and blue lined books, as noted on the booklists. Schoolstuff offer a great service to the school with the convenience of books being delivered to your home. It is important that students have all of their necessary requirements from the first day of school. After School – No Play! With students' safety in mind, all playgrounds are closed before and after school from 3pm. The exception is the use of the grounds by the after school providers. Thank you for understanding this decision. We are fortunate to have Burnie Brae Park playground so nearby and encourage after school catch ups to continue in this public area. Parents we ask for your support with this school expectation. Please remind your child/ren to wait nearby the closest gate to your pick up. Uniforms for 2019 The Uniform shop is currently open Monday 8am to 9.30am. P&C Uniforms will have the shop open for extended days over the holiday period.

Merit Awards

Congratulations to the following students that received a certificate on parade.

Curriculum

Supporting your child’s learning. Every day counts! At Wavell, we are committed to providing a safe, respectful and disciplined learning environment, where students have opportunities to engage in quality learning experiences. High standards of behaviour are expected so that the learning and teaching in our school can be effective. A collaborative effort with parents is essential so that all our students develop positive behaviours and classroom time is not taken up by unnecessary disruptive or non-compliant behaviour.

Being an engaged Learner at Wavell requires our students to have the following behaviours:

.

Parents can support their child/ren to develop active listening skills by practicing these skills. *Maintain eye contact *Do not interrupt *Ask questions *Repeat back what the speaker says *Listen for total meaning *Carry out the instruction

Try the following activities to help develop and sharpen your child’s listening skills.

Read stories to your child. Ask him or her to predict what will happen next. The prediction requires your child to listen to the details to make a logical guess. Cook with your child. Read the recipe to him or her, having your child listen to and follow each step to complete the recipe correctly. Have conversations about things your child is inter ested in. This gives your child a chance to engage in a real conversation, practicing both speaking and listening. Play the telephone game. Get together with a group and have one person whisper a sentence to the next person. Each person repeats it to the next until the final person. Have this person say the sentence aloud and see how much the two sentences have changed. Create a list of questions with your child for him or her to ask you or a sibling. After one person has answered, see how many the other can remember. Switch roles and see how well the other person does. Play the “spot the change” game. Read your child a short story. Then read it again, making some changes. Each time your child hears a change have him or her clap or raise his or her hand. Get creative with “follow the directions.” Give short, simple instructions and have your child draw according to the directions they hear.

Listening to instructions is about more than hearing the instructions. Having active listening skills has many benefits besides better comprehension in the classroom, active listeners tend to be better communicators and problem solvers.

Behaviour at Wavell Heights SS In weeks 5 and 6, Wavell Heights State School’s behaviour focus stems from the whole school rules: Be a Learner, Be Safe and Be Responsible Week 5: Be Safe/ Be Respectful– Revision of High 5 strategies HIGH FIVE PROGRAM What is High Five? It is an effective strategy to develop problem–solving strategies for our students. As a whole school approach it can also help to reduce bullying. It is a 5 step problem solving strategy that can be used in the classroom, in the playground and for perceived bullying incidents. How we Implement High Five: The High Five program is implemented throughout the year in each classroom to reinforce the strategies for students to use. Each step of the high five process will be unpacked, discussed and modelled. This could include:

Ignore I - I didn’t hear it G - Give no eye contact N - No reaction, stay calm O - Only use confident body language R - Remember to count to five E - Exhale & inhale.

Talk Friendly - Ask someone to stop when they are doing something that we do not like. - Use a sentence with calm, friendly words to ask someone to stop.

Walk Away - Stand tall, head up high. - Look confident. - Walk confidently, don’t run.

Talk Firmly -Eye contact, confident body language -Use an assertive voice, slightly raised. -Tell them to stop it. -State the consequences of continued bullying.

Report Students need to attempt to problem-solve by using the other High 5 strategies before they get to the reporting stage. -In the playground - Tell your teachers, teacher aides, Deputy Principal, Principal who are on duty -In the classroom or specialist lessons – Tell the class teacher or teacher aide -If it happens at the end of the day - Tell your parents or teacher the next day back at school

You can help us at home by speaking with your children about the High 5 strategies and how they can use them at school. Further information can be found in the Wavell Heights State School Responsible Behaviour Plan.

Week 6: Be Safe/Be Responsible -Walk in a sensible and considerate way around the school and classroom As we enter the middle of the term it is important for students to remember that valuable learning is happening all around the school. We will be looking for: - Classes walking in 2 lines quietly - Walking on the concrete areas - Following teacher instructions - Students moving out of the way for other classes walking nearby We look forward to spotting students following these rules throughout this fortnight.
