Wavell State High School – Year 7 2020 Parent Info rmation Night For students enrolled to attend Wavell State High School in 2020, there is a Year 7 parent information night at the high school on Monday 16 September 7pm. It is important that all parents attend to hear the information that is vital for the transition into Year 7. Year 5/6 Camp Week 10 (Monday-Thursday) Students in Years 5 and 6 will be attending camp at Runaway Bay from Monday 16 September to Thursday 19 September. This includes following all given instructions and being respectful to our school staff and the camp staff. Please ensure you discuss this with your child. Any misconduct that occurs may result in students being sent home. We thank the staff attending, Mr Kurtz, Mrs Harris, Mrs Lanzon, Mr Clough, Mrs Lindley and Mrs Down for giving up their personal time to provide our students with this opportunity. Arrangements have been made for students in Years 5 and 6, not attending camp next week. Students will join together into one class with Mrs Jack. Merit Awards Congratulations to the following students that received a certificate on parade.

Library News This week and next week, we are exploring the wonderful work of the very imaginative Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl Day is celebrated worldwide on his birthday, the 13th of September.

Come along to the library and make yourself some BFG ears, BFG dream catcher and dream jar, a peach (not a giant one), headbands, design your own chocolate bar and mix up some marvellous medicine like George.

Up Late at the Library

As part of Australian Reading Hour on Thursday the 19 th of September , the library will be open late! Come in and enjoy a bedtime story with the whole family from 6pm-7pm . As part of this night, we will be holding a Book Swap. Bring along your ‘gently’ used book to swap for another book.

Dig under your bed, to the back of your bookshelf and to the bottom of your cupboard for a book you have finished reading. Please ensure your book is in good condition – no missing pages, torn pages, drawings or water damage. When you bring your old book to the Library, you will be able to swap it for some fresh, exciting reading material!

Get Caught Reading!

Once again, we are challenging everybody to “get caught reading” somewhere over the holidays. Think of somewhere unusual or interesting to read your favourite book. Take a photo of the best reading spot you can find. We will display them back at school in the library. Email your photo to Mrs Fall at: [email protected] or bring in a printed copy. Don’t forget to include your name, class and the location of your reading spot.

A reminder that students are welcome to come to the library to borrow before school each morning from 8:15am. If you have any questions regarding the library, please contact me by email at [email protected].

Behaviour at Wavell Heights SS In our final weeks of the term, our behaviour focus will stem from the whole school rules; Be A Learner/ Be Responsible.

Week 9 – Be a Learner/ Be Responsible – Being a good (and active) listener

Week 10 - Own class focus – teachers will choose a rule from the term that they believe their class needs additional teaching time on.

As we come to the end of the term, it is important that students stay focused and use their active listening skills at all times. Listening is an important component of learning. A student’s ability to actively listen has a major impact on building the communication skills needed both inside and outside of the classroom. Active listening means giving full attention to the speaker and trying to understand the complete message being sent.

Active listening requires whole body involvement: • Eyes: to look at the person talking • Ears: to hear what is being said • Mouth: by remaining quiet • Hands: by keeping them by his/her side or in lap • Feet: by placing them on the floor and keeping them still • Body: by facing the speaker or sitting in the chair • Brain: to think about what the speaker is saying • Heart: to care about what the speaker talks about • We cannot wait to spot our learners using their active listening skills in the classrooms and with peers.
