Thought for the week

Don’t be afraid to give your best to what are seemingly small jobs. Every time you conquer

one, it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little things well, the big ones will take

Making Us Proud

• The Founders and Founding Family as TIS celebrated 15 years last week.

• TIS family members who have joined in activities last week to celebrate TIS@15.

• Performers at Saturday’s Durbar and Genesis at Sunday’s Thanksgiving Service. WOW!

Reminders

• Please read the weekly bulletin and monthly newsletter, and take action as required.

• All sections of the online exeat form must be completed for it to be submitted. Otherwise,

you will see an error message. The time component is a 12-hour clock.

TIS @ 15

WOW! The 15th Anniversary Durbar was really something out of the box. We were thrilled to

have the Second Lady of Ghana, H E Mrs Samira Bawumia, as guest of honour, What an

incredible role model for girls and young ladies! Guest speaker, the insanely talented Ben Dotse

Malor, held us spellbound as he encouraged all of us to become global givers. Messages from

pioneer parent, Theresa Osei-Tutu, and pioneer student, Cecilia Odonkor, were as powerful as

TEMA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Follow us Back to top

they were inspiring. Of course, the various performances were stunning, including Khadidjatou

and the Pop Band. I have seen the TIS choir and the Cultural Troupe perform on three occasions

over 10 days. I now understand how you can perfect perfection. Jennifer has also got a new fan

club after her second awesome performance in four days.

However, it’s not all over yet. Remember, the TIS annual production of Beauty and the Beast

will be held at the National Theatre in Accra on Friday, 23 November. One night only. Contact

Surama King or admin to book your tickets now.

Mid-Semester Break

The mid-semester break commences at 4.00pm on next Thursday,18 October. Students may be

collected between 4.00-5.00pm on Thursday afternoon, and no earlier. Or parents may collect

their son and/or daughter from 8.00am on Friday.

However, students involved in:

• the TIS Annual Creative Writers and Photographers Workshop, which will be held next

Friday and Saturday may depart about 5.00pm on Saturday, 20 October; or

• SOS MUN which will be held on 18-20 October may depart after they return to TIS on

Saturday, 20 October; or

• ISSAG soccer, handball, tennis and table tennis on Saturday, 20 October, may be collected

from the venue on this day or after they return to school; or

• Beauty and the Beast may depart at 5.00pm on Tuesday, 23 October.

Students return to Hostels on Sunday, 28 October.

Dianne Blackburn

It has been a pleasure to host Dianne for four days this week to help us finetune our preparations

for MYP authorisation in November. Dianne is an independent educational consultant and

IBEN workshop leader for the International Baccalaureate.

Care of Devices

I remain concerned about the lack of responsibility by many students over the care of their

laptops. Very few have the required protective case. Many leave their devices unattended, and

then forget where they left it. Some students place them in locations that are prone to damage,

for example, the basketball court. I find it hard to believe that students are able to drop laptops.

TEMA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Relationships

TIS encourages friendships and we expect that boys know how to behave around boys, girls

around girls, and gentlemen around ladies.

However, we do not accept relationships at TIS for the simple reason these distract students

from their learning. If staff considers a relationship exists, parents will be informed and

students will be counselled. If the relationship continues after seven days, both students will be

suspended until students and parents can confirm the relationship has ended.

Aunty Sandra has met with a few students this week to counsel them. If there is a concern that

a relationship exists, parents will be informed before the mid-semester break.

The Duke of Edinburgh International Award

For our strategic and balanced students, now is the time to commence one of the three levels

(bronze, silver or gold) of this exciting program. Students must be 14 years to commence the

program. Participants in any level of the program must pay a fee for the program. These fees

are: GHC50 for Bronze; GHC60 for Silver; and GHC70 for Gold. Please note for some

activities with the award program, additional fees may be involved. For example, adventurous

journey and residential project.

The Duke of Edinburgh International Award Scheme is comprised of three levels and four

sections. Participants complete all four sections at each level in order to achieve their Award.

At Gold level, participants also complete a Residential Project. The Bronze Level is for those

students who are 14 years and over. The Silver level is for those students who are 15 years and

over, while the Gold Level is for those 16 years and over. The four sections are: service; skills;

physical recreation; and adventurous journey. The residential project is only completed at the

Gold level.

University and college admission managers look beyond academic results to find out what

makes each student a ‘right fit’ for their institution. While CAS involvement and projects are

highly regarded by these managers, a Duke of Edinburgh award demonstrates achievement and

commitment, two key factors in success at university, and in life.

I mentioned earlier that it was time for our strategic and balanced students to commence one

of the programs. Why?

Students training for ISSAG soccer, tennis, table tennis and/or athletics should tick the Skills

or Physical Recreation requirement. Students attending SOS MUN or ALAMAU for the

French or Spanish Study Tours should tick the residential living requirement. An adventurous

journey is being planned for the end of semester. There are various service projects that

students have the opportunity to join this semester.

TEMA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Follow us Back to top

However, remember that the two key words are challenge and commitment. Being involved

in an activity for two weeks and then ‘becoming busy’ will not demonstrate commitment.

Students can join up by see Misty or Surama.

Uniforms

For any uniform requirements, please email Aunty Norah with details, including sizes, and the

number and items required. Norah’s email is: [email protected]

TIS Events

Parents are always welcome to attend any TIS event. We live in a busy 24/7 world, so this open

invitation to parents to attend any event hopefully provides some sanity when trying to juggle

calendars. Throughout the year, there are specific Visiting Sundays. However, they are not a

monthly event as there may be sufficient TIS events available to parents to see their

son/daughter.

Exeats

Exeats are required if parents require their son/daughter to depart the school for appointments,

family gatherings, etc. Parents should download, complete and email the exeat form from the

school website: https://www.tis.edu.gh/exeat-form/

Please note:

• Exeat requests must not clash with a school event. Approval from the general Manager will

be required in these instances.

• Students will not have exeats approved if they have outstanding work to complete.

• Exeat requests for a weekend should be received by COB Wednesdays.

• Students returning from an exeat on a school day must be in full school uniform, including

shoes, not sandals.

• Students should return from an exeat by 5.00pm. Gates are locked at 6.00pm.

ManageBac for Parents

ManageBac (MB) is our learning management portal that is used by teachers for planning

assessment, reporting and attendance. Students use it to access assignment tasks, resources,

and assessment results, including semester reports. Parents access MB for reports,

announcements and can track their child’s academic performance. Almost all messages,

including the weekly bulletin and monthly newsletter will be sent through MB to parents. If

you have any difficulties registering or logging in, please email Ken ([email protected])

International Students: Residence Permit for Non-Ghanaian Students

All non-Ghanaian students require residence permit to be able to attend TIS legally, as per

the immigration laws of Ghana. TIS is happy to assist parents in this matter. For any

clarification, or further assistance, please contact our Administrator, Mr Eddy Torkonoo:

[email protected]

Personal Laptop Requirements

Counsellor’s Corner

What a spectacular and successful 15 years’ anniversary! TIS - shaping the future, developing minds for life.

DP2 important reminders from university guidance office:

✓ DP2s please note that 1 November is the secret deadline to aim at, for submitting

your college applications to U.S. universities, for maximum scholarship and

financial aid consideration!

✓ Also all Early Decision/Early Action applicants must ensure that they put in a request

on either their College Board or ACT accounts, to have their SAT/ACT scores sent to

their selected universities 2 weeks to a month ahead of the application deadlines. They

will require credit card payment of the fee to have the testing agencies send test scores

out.

For all UK Oxford, Cambridge, Medical School applicants, deadlines are:

✓ DP2s UK early applicants, will have their applications submitted before close of this

week 12 October 2018.

✓ DP2 Parents of students in this category should send an email to the Guidance

Counselors, listing and indicating their approval of their ward’s final list of UK

universities, having considered location, programme, cost of attendance, academic

requirements among other preferred factors. Applications will not be submitted

without the confirmation/ approval email from parents.

✓ Each UK ‘early’ applicant and EA/ED student should have clicked the final “Pay and

Send” latest by Wednesday 10 October, 2018

TEMA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Follow us Back to top

✓ Note: The TIS university guidance department strives to send out all application

documents way ahead of the official deadlines to ensure that nothing is missed and our

students get priority consideration for all university admissions and

scholarship/financial aid/bursary opportunities, so students are urged to adhere to our

strict deadlines and refer to the timelines we shared with them at the beginning of the

semester. Counting on your usual cooperation.

DP 2 Parents should please confirm which dates suit them by responding to the request from

College Guides, for a financial aid one-on-one meeting this week. Appointments will be

based on first come first served basis depending on when we receive an email reply. Most of

the meetings however, will take place right after the mid-semester break and are mostly

geared towards parents of students with U.S. universities on their list. Thank you.

Parents are always welcome to attend any of the university visits!

The month of October has been incredibly remarkable. Great university visits, exciting offers,

excellent presentations, awesome scholarship packages, making our students well-informed

about the best fit schools based on their unique strengths, abilities and talents. To complement

the list of great universities which visited our campus, we have;

students good scholarship packages. In TIS our strong niche for the Arts and Creative Design

has served as the right preparatory grounds for the smooth transitioning of our students to

SCAD. Well done to our alumna Mame Ekua Cudjoe, who Ms. Nebiat spoke highly of as

one of the most hardworking current students from TIS whom SCAD treasures. Kudos!

Applying Early Decision (ED)??:

What is it? ED- is a mode of application where a student applies by an earlier deadline and

signs a binding agreement to by all means enroll at a particular university once they are

admitted. Once admitted, an ED applicant cannot renege on this binding agreement, as it has

very harsh consequences such as losing out on all other university offerse. ED is usually a term

used by universities in the USA.

Advantages of ED

• It shows the college that the student is fully committed, enthusiastic, and very decisive

about that university. Thus the university is a student’s number one destination out of

the other available options.

• A very high and strategic opportunity to be considered for the best of scholarship

packages (depending on the university / college’s policies).

• Early decision is a non–negotiable game! Therefore when a student meets all the

university’s requirements, the admission team is highly likely to admit the student.

• For Lehigh University, Early Decision presents the opportunity to admit the cream of

the crop of students that they want.

Early Action (EA): It is also a similar early application mode, but is not binding.

Students with strong test scores and academic records, are strongly

encouraged/advised to apply early when they meet university’s full

requirements- as recommended by the Lehigh University representative.

Especially for full scholarships and very good scholarship packages. Free

money for grabs! You cannot afford to miss the opportunity! The early bird

catches the worm. Remember: Students all over the world are applying for

that same package. Why not apply early?!

TIS is 15!

After fifteen years of serving Ghana with a stellar

buffet of educational opportunities, the Tema

International School community undoubtedly has so

much to celebrate – and TIS definitely knows how to

celebrate in grand style.

The past week has been packed with endless

activities, for the staff, students, parents, alumni and

friends of the IB World School.

Well, what are the lessons to be learnt from Tema International School, as she turns fifteen? It

is all pretty simple – that dreams do come true; that Ghanaians can build and run internationally

-acclaimed educational institutions; that everything that has a coveted presence also has a

powerful story; that schools like TIS are evidence that Ghana has a strong track record of

setting global educational policy trends and that a school which is as young as TIS can

definitely rise to become a force to reckon with in Ghana, in Africa and in the world.

TIS @ 15 - A journey through Service

Service is more than a core component of the

programs we run here in TIS, it’s one of our school

values and we take it very serious. The DP students

engage with CAS projects and experiences

throughout their 2 years program, and the MYP

students engage in Service in Action and community

projects.

TIS students are constantly reminded of how

important every little action towards making the world a better place is.

When I talk about TIS Students’ Service initiatives, I

like to emphasize that what matters is the impact that

we make on the society which is meaningful,

transformational, authentic and fun. We gain skills that

develop us in life long learner. We engage with our

community and as result of that we identify problems,

we take action, we find solutions, we reach out and

promote positive change.

The opportunities in TIS to develop caring and compassionate citizens are endless. I personally

look forward to Grade 11 to start my CAS project. I am inspired by my senior’s initiatives.

Service initiatives have really

evolved over the years from the

Deveme Outreach, to Kodiabe

Canteen with Father Campbell, to

Akorlikope, to the recent incubator

for Tema General Hospital by the

Interact of TIS and many other

initiatives by our MYP students

Service in Action and community

projects.

Let’s travel through the years and

witness what TIS have being engaged with the communities near and far from our campus.

This video is the evidence of what a small group of passionate and committed individuals can

do. I am inspired for the next 15 years.

MYP Year 3 Community Visit – Communicators, Caring and Inquirers in Action

Still in the business of making our learning

relevant and connecting our classroom to

the larger world, the Grade 8s took their

first community visit as the final stage of

their introduction into service

learning/community project. The class

paid a pleasant visit to 4 areas of interest;

School of the Deaf, Calvary Presby, Save

Them Orphanage, Tema Fishing Harbour.

Students were exposed to the various

livelihoods of people and agreed on a realization that individuals outside of their circle can be

different but deserve equal rights to basic needs.

At School of the Deaf, students demonstrated the IB Learner

profile Communication as they sat in class with them and

learnt basic sign language. They mingled, laughed, took

pictures and shared their differences. In the end the class was

able to sign their names and basic pleasantries like Hi, Sorry,

Welcome, thank you and I love you. “It was fascinating and

eye opening”, as Phoebe recollects.

The team moved on to the Calvary Basic School to

interact with students. Upon arrival they were having

their closing assembly and TIS joined them and then

took a tour around the JSS block and exchanging

pleasantries with the final year students

The team then moved on the Save them Young

Orphanage, it was an emotional site when the class

encountered the Orphans. They had the opportunity

to listen to their story from the Caretaker, Uncle Eric,

who narrated the mode of operation in the

Orphanage. He shared with the team how they solely

depend on donations and sponsorship. He commended the students for choosing to visit the

home and TIS on the whole in the attempt to imbibe empathy in the Students. The class played

with the kids for a few minutes took pictures and brainstormed on how they can make their

lives better.

Due to time, the team passed the Tema

Fishing harbour but did not get off the bus

for an experience. They saw the boats

docked, some fishermen, fishmongers,

traders along the beach and deplorable state

of the harbor. The class felt enlightened

about the world outside what they are used

to and very appreciative of who they and

what they have. A few reflections from the

students:

Yesterday, we visited four places in our community and they are, Agya Kojo School of the Deaf,

Calvary School, Tema Fishing Harbour and Save Them Young Orphanage. Some of the ideas

that popped into my head were

• Donate my old clothes to the children in the Orphanage

• Raise Funds to support the Orphanage

• Write a letter to the government about the

problems they face so they can assist them with the

help from my English/Language and Literature class.

Brenda Anthonio

On the 10 October 2018, my grade (8) embarked on

a trip into the community. The trip was very

insightful because it showed me the lives of people

outside the walls of Tema International School. We

went to an orphanage that solely depended on donations. Some of the children there were in

bad condition and the caretakers could only do their best to help them. This orphanage has

inspired my community project to help the home; Save Them Young orphanage. Nuku

Our third stop was Save Them Young and when I entered

and saw the condition of the place and the kids who were

in here and were orphans I got so emotional I had to

move to the back and cry. There was this particular little

girl who was wearing a pink top and leggings and she did

not talk for the whole time. She was so quiet and I

assumed she was sad and needed someone to love her.

There was another

girl who I went up to

and asked what her

name was and she

said Maksufi and then I asked her if she was bored and she

said yes then I gave her my book and pen and let her draw

and she drew this beautiful picture of a girl. I loved it. Also

the walls were very dirty and not interesting for the

children to engage in learning. So, I Ewuraba and I

thought why don't we raise money and redecorate their

classroom and make a little space on the wall for the

children to draw.

The last stop was Tema Fishing Harbour and over there we had to stay in the bus but I could

only see how dirty the market was and how the boats

looked nasty and not safe and the children were unsafe

and were playing in a dirty environment.

I was so happy Aunt Grace took us to those four places

because now I know that we are so privileged because

a lot of people out there are suffering and we are here.

So now I want to stand up and become a better person

by helping other lives with my community project.

Reading Club

As inquirers, life is boring without a book. Reading club sparks curiosity in students to read,

research and enrich their vocabulary as well as speak eloquently and confidently. This week

the Reading Club took a different turn with news on Current affairs and the Colour Code

Game. Some reflections from our students.

Bervelyn Sawyerr-Markwei – G 11 “During reading club on Wednesday, 10 October, 2018, we read about current issues

happening in Ghana. For example, First Lady Melania Trump who embarked on her first big

solo international trip and first visit to Africa with plans to visit four countries in just five days,

focusing on child welfare and promoting her advocacy "Be Best" initiated earlier this year. .

Her first destination was our dear country, Ghana, where she visited a baby clinic, toured

wings of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, including an older part of the hospital and a

newer facility, and passed out teddy bears wrapped in blankets.

After, Auntie Setor and Auntie Constance asked about our favorite colours and their

connotations to us, different colored flowers were used to represent us as humans and how our

different actions can build or destroy someone’s life. As humans we should abide by the colour

code by complimenting each other positively and impacting instead of in people’s life”.

Charity Fafa Apreku – G 10 “Today during reading club, we did a very fun and insightful activity. The first one was to get

us in touch with our current affairs. We each got little sticky notes with mystery words on it.

Then we had to share the little knowledge we had on the topic. This activity exposed the extent

of ignorance we have in terms of current affairs. It also educated us on them, we are now fully

aware of what's going on in our motherland. The next part took a more discerning turn where

we learned about a concept called colour coding. Everyone had to pick a colour and define it-

we told each other what the colour meant to us as individuals. Here, everyone waited with

bated breath for the next turn events- why were we doing this? The grand reveal came- we

learned that each and every one of us represents a different colour. We need to use each of

these colours to complement, brighten, lighten up and bring each other together”.

Lena Dodoo – G 10

“We started the meeting by discussing current affairs in Ghana.

Everyone received a sticky note from Auntie Setor that had a different

issue written on it. The most interesting was one that I read: When did

Melania arrive in Ghana? I had no idea she was even coming! Next,

Auntie Constance had us all say what colour plant we would be. I said

I would be a green plant because green symbolizes life and growth. Then

she told us about the color code, and how we should complement and

encourage each other, like how different colors come together to make

ordinary things, spaces and dresses look beautiful”.
