Awards handed out during the ceremony included cita-tions, plaques, certificates and medals for 25 years of ser-vice, bravery, Exemplary Per-formance of Duty, Lifesaving, St. John’s Ambulance awards, Armed Forces Day, Civilian, Auxiliary police service, and In-ternational Peacekeeping.

Local award recipients in-cluded Temagami First Nation Bear Island Ojibway elder Carol Guppy, Temiskaming Detach-ment Constables Kevin Adams and Ken Helbin and Ministry of Natural Resources Conserva-tion Officer Michael Schenk.COMMISSIONER’S COMMENDATION

Mrs. Guppy was given the Commissioner’s Commenda-tion Community Service award because she is an Ojibway elder who has shared her accumu-lated knowledge about Native culture in Native Awareness Training courses. She made herself available to participants in and out of the classroom and provided the OPP with a unique insight into aboriginal and police relations from an aboriginal perspective. She was

Continued from C FRONT commended for being a valu-able resource for aboriginal women’s roles and customs.

“ I am surprised and shocked, but very grateful,” said Mrs. Guppy.TWO CONSTABLES

Two Temiskaming Detach-ment Constables, Kevin Adams and Ken H e l -bin re-c e i v e d the special Commission-er’s Letter and St. John Ambulance Award for valiant ef-forts to revive a 26- year-old New Liskeard woman who they found unconscious laying face down in a stairwell.

Upon their arrival on the scene, both officers attempted to resuscitate the female by way of CPR and artificial respi-ration.

The woman was transferred to hospital where she sadly could not be revived.

It was noted the constables did everything in their power to provide her with the best chance for survival and they

were honoured for those ef-forts.SCHENK RECOgNIzED

Ministry of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Michael Schenk was given the Com-missioner’s Commendation for

assisting the OPP when, in Au-

gust of 2010, a 15-year-

old ca-noeist suf-

fered a medical emergency at a

remote camp on Diamond Lake.

Mr. Schenk was work-ing in the region when the

OPP enlisted his help as he escorted an ambulance to Dia-mond Lake.

The Conservation Officer identified an access trail that cut paddle time in half. Mr. Schenk also used his truck and an ATV to meet canoeists and then transported the patient to the waiting ambulance.

His assistance helped the subject receive medial treat-ment that much sooner, say OPP.

Ceremony recognizes the

best and bravest

10 years agoTaken from The Temiskaming Speaker dated October 10, 2001EffEct of tErrorist attacks noticEd at Earlton airportby Darlene WroeEARLTON – The Earlton Ti-miskaming Regional Airport has seen some impact as a result of heightened security concerns af-ter the September 11 terrorist at-tacks in the United States.

The airport did have Canpass designation meaning people ar-riving at the airport from the United States could have their baggage checked there. Howev-er that designation has been can-celled, forcing American fliers to stop in Toronto to have their lug-gage checked there.

The result of this means that planes flying into the Earlton air-port may possibly already have fuelled up in Toronto when they

stopped there. This could mean a possible loss in fuel reserves which has been helping the air-ports climb out of its annual defi-cit, explained Armstrong Town-ship Reeve Jules Gravel.

It is Armstrong Township which is the owner of the Earlton Timiskaming Regional Airport.

Reeve Gravel is attempting to remain optimistic, saying coun-cil, staff and volunteers are hope-ful the situation will not have a negative impact on the airport.

And he says, that so far there has not been a negative impact.

Flights from the United States continue to arrive as companies such as SMC-Canada and Grant Forest Products continue to use air flights for corporate travel.

The township and the airport advisory committee have been working with Rouyn-Noranda to establish a scheduled passen-

ger air flights service with car-rier. Reeve Gravel says the air industry problems now being experienced “might set us back a little bit,” but again his optimism comes out. “Things can get bet-ter,” he said.invEstigators point to track, turnovEr, and training in tEmagami spillby Diane JohnstonNORTH BAY – Track deteriora-tion, high staff turnover, and the use of “less than fully trained” staff have been cited by investi-gators reviewing last year’s de-railment and sulphuric acid spill near Temagami.

The factors were cited as causes and contributing factors by a Transportation Safety Board of Canada report investigating the derailment of 29 cars from an Ontario Northland Railway

On Friday last Sir Wilfrid tendered his resignation to the Governor-General, and recom-mended Mr. Borden as his suc-cessor. The Globe describes the procedure as follows:

The Canadian ship of State exchanged pilots this afternoon. Sir Wilfrid Laurier stepped off the quarterdeck at 3 o’clock, after weathering the storms of

fifteen years, conscious that his difficult task has been no-bly done. Three hours later Mr. Borden accepted the invitation of his Majesty’s representative to become the new pilot. His hand is now on the wheel.

The outgoing Government sat in Council for the last time this morning, clearing the slate of the last bit of unfinished busi-ness requiring attention before the new Administration takes hold. At 1:30 Sir Wilfrid said to the newspapermen who gath-ered in his office: “You can an-nounce that I shall wait up on

The Northeastern Ontario As-sociation is asking area farmers and produce growers to back a project aimed at boosting the north.

The NODA is again sponsor-ing an exhibit of potatoes, tur-nips and mixed vegetables in the commercial entries at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.

Last year the NODA had a similar exhibit, which attracted a good deal of attention upon this area’s potential as a vegetables producing section.

Due to the limited budget un-der which the project is operat-ing, the NODA cannot afford to purchase the exhibits from the growers. W. H. C. Marsh, general manager of the NODA, is asking for as many donations as possible from growers in the area. cobalt council rEcEivEs rEport

COBALT – Town council stud-ied a four page financial report when the Cobalt town fathers gathered for their regular meet-ing Tuesday night.

The report showed that the town’s general position is good, but the water works is heading for a deficit.

Councillor Fern Desjardins had threatened to resign if the report wasn’t ready. He got it and didn’t quit.

Pending the appointment of an official town planning board by the Ontario department of plan-ning and development, the coun-cil appointed a committee to do some ground work.two ontario ministErs will visit thE district

This district will see at least two Ontario Government heads within the next few days.

On Friday the Hon Robert W. Macaulay, Minister of Energy Resources will arrive in Earlton from Timmins after lunching there and will be met there by Phil Hoffman who will escort him to meeting of Conservatives who will gather for dinner at New Liskeard.

Following this he will meet the delegates from the district at a meeting in Haileybury. Mr. Macaulay is a candidate for the Ontario leaders post recently va-cated by Leslie Frost.sEarchErs find missing girl

Police, farmers and school children worked last Friday to find a little girl lost in the bush.

The missing child was three year-old Carol Marriott, daugh-ter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Marriott. The family lives near Nine Mile Corner in Harley Township.

Carol was missed at about 2 o’clock in the afternoon and her mother called the OPP at Hai-leybury.

OPP Const. Don Stump and about 20 local farmers and school children scoured the bush near the Marriott home.

They picked up her trail, which led them about one-eight of a mile into the bush and through a gravel pit. In the meantime Carol had wandered back onto a concession road, one mile away from her home where she was found at 5:30 pm by a local farmer. She was tired, hungry but unharmed.

There will be a general feeling of disappointment, we imagine, when it is learned that the Hon Frank Cochrane leaves the On-tario Cabinet to accept the office of Minister of Railway in the Do-minion Government. This will seem like losing Mr. Cochrane altogether, but as Minister of Public Works, he would still have been in close touch with his former Temiskaming con-stituents. We expect his duties will not be so arduous as they have been as Minister of Lands and Mines. The Speaker wishes Mr. Cochrane great success.

In view of the terrible ca-tastrophe at Austin, Penn, last week, by reason of the breaking of a dam, it is to be hoped that the dam being constructed at the foot of Quinze Lake will be of

the most substantial character that the engineers can devise. At Austin the lumber company had a dam storing millions of gallons of water.

The water was stored and used to flood logs down the river, and for other purposes such as it is intended to do on the Ottawa River waters. By the breaking of the dam three hundred per-sons were suddenly rushed into eternity.JEssE alExandEr concErt

The Ladies’ Aid of the Meth-odist Church were indeed fortu-nate in securing the services of Jessie Alexander for their enter-tainment of Friday last. Jessie Alexander has been a prime fa-vourite with the Canadian peo-ple for many a year, and the en-tertainment held here last week proved beyond a doubt that her star has not yet begun to wane, indications pointing to the fact that never was this clever elocu-tionist in better form than right now. Every number given by her was most heartily received, while she was always ready with an encore, which was nor-mally quite as good as the first number.

Vendors are committed to operating until the end of the regular season October 27 and at the November 24 Christmas mar-ket, said market board president Larry Craig.

The market is drafting an ap-peal for help from a local farm association, and he said vendors will also meet soon after this sea-son wraps up to discuss plans for next year.

The market was hit this year by a three-fold increase in rent to use Riverside Place for the Saturday morning markets.

Fees increased from $50, used to cover clean up costs, to $175, plus the goods and service tax.

ENGLEHART & AREA

There is a lot in the news these days about bullies and bullying - the physical and the psychological; and coincidentally, the ques-tion is asked at times as to why not much is written here about hap-penings in school. Well, school is where a lot of bullying happens and always has. It was around “back in the day” and frequently it came not from fellow students, but from teachers. This is some-thing rarely acknowledged or even given much thought. In earlier times bullying seems only to have been much thought about in physical terms. The psychological kind was largely unknown and teachers were sort of sacrosant. It’s now agreed that bullying and intimidation can be psychological as well as physical in nature, in-cluding “cyber” bullying where there is no direct contact at all be-tween bullying and victim. Some teachers were masters at the art.

In the 1940s there was a shortage of teachers. Many young men and a lesser number of young women “joined up” in the military. Others, young women in particular, took better paying jobs in “war work” in the cities over the poor salaries they could get at teaching.

Consequently, when their teacher young Tom Tait joined the Air Force, the school board at SS#1 Chamberlain hired an old “retread” (teacher who had come out retirement) by name of F.E. Robinson. This old man had no doubt received his training back in the 1800s and his approach to teaching reflected that fact.

When a pupil displeased him in any minor way, the pudgy-faced old tyrant exploded into an apolectic fit of red-faced rage. His favourite way of intimidation - and there were many - was to threaten the hapless student with “a thrashing to within an inch of his life”. A variation was a “caning” with the same predicted dire outcome - thus indicative of the antiquity of his training.

Such browbeating would today be clear cause for criminal charges of threatening death, in a bar room brawl, let alone at the extreme upper edge of psychological classroom bullying. Fortu-nately for his victims, some moderation in the application of cor-poral punishment had been legislated in the fifty or so years since he started teaching. He was left with nothing more than a one inch strap of web belting to apply his “thrashings and canings” to trembling ten year olds, the number of strokes being also legally limited to something less than life-threatening.

Old Fred Robinson was not alone among his colleagues in the fine art of bullying. A coming column will relate to a more refined version - this time at the high school level.

***************You may notice that “service club” signs at entrances to Engle-

hart have been refurbished with new logos replacing faded ones. They look better now, but you may also notice some blank spaces due to the demise of a couple of organizations formerly represent-ed on the signs.

If any non-profit club or group would like to be represented on the signs to fill these spots, just get in touch with Chamber of Com-merce Secretary Bonnie Warner or any executive member. The cost is minimal but the publicity is priceless.

unload their ATVs in the bush, take along their GPS’s and their IP-ODs and go off into the woods to hunt critters with a bow and arrow.

Infection Control is every-one’s responsibility. This year’s theme is Are You In?

Get INvolvedProvide INputINitiate changeThe hospitals in the dis-

trict of Timiskaming and the Timiskaming Health Unit will be joining forces to provide education sessions through-out the district. Come and receive the latest information on important topics such as:

• Antimicrobial Resistance/ and the proper use of antibi-otics

• Immunization • Hand HygieneIt is up to each and every-

one to make infection control part of their everyday lives.

The single most important improvement you can make to reduce the transmission of

disease is to promote good hand washing in your own home. This is one way you can initiate change.

Another important issue we must become aware of is the proper use of antibiotics. If we all get more involved and ask the pertinent ques-tions when going to the physicians office we will be able to gain education and awareness of antimicrobial resistance with proper use of antibiotics.

Immunization is the third issue for which we will be providing information to the general public.

The immunizations avail-able are always changing and it is so important to have the most current data available to make the best informed decision. I would also like to

remind adults to ensure your immunization status is up-to-date. We as parents so often ensure our children’s status is up-to-date and forget about ourselves.

We ask after our education session you provide some input to let us know if the information was helpful.

The schedule for education info sessions are:

• Monday morning October 17: Temiskaming Hospital

• Tuesday morning October 18: Englehart Hospital

• Wednesday afternoon October 19: Extendicare in Kirkland Lake

• Thursday afternoon Octo-ber 20: Teck Pioneer Resi-dence in Kirkland Lake

• Friday morning October 21: Kirkland and District Hospital

Infection Control week isOctober 17th – 21st
