I would like to thank Natalie Hale who relieved as Principal in Term 1 this year. Not only did she keep the school moving in the right direction, she instituted some positive changes that are all still benefitting the school. I would also like to thank my two relieving deputies, Anthony Murphy and Jeanette Trotter for their work this year. They have had to step up and have had to learn a great deal in a short time and in so doing we have increased our leadership capacity. Ms Trotter will be continuing in the roll next year and we will be welcoming back Ms Fountoulis into her Deputy Roll in 2018. Many teachers have had to assume higher duties this year and they have done so without complaint and have acquitted themselves admirably. This year has been the last year of our School Plan for 2015-2017. Our School Plan focused on three strategic directions: inspiring our students, increasing staff capacity, and enhancing our organisational effectiveness. We have implemented projects to address these strategic directions and ticked off milestones along the way. We now differentiate better for students with Disabilities and those who are learning English as a second language, our teachers are well supported to maintain their accreditation with Professional Learning and time to plan for curriculum changes. Administratively, we have changed the way we maintain our records for mark books, reports discipline and activities. We have also had to introduce a new financial administration system as part of a state wide change. These projects have been taxing but have led to a school that can better service the needs of our learning community Tempe High School prides itself on offering students a rich and varied Enrichment Program which gives our students many opportunities to showcase their talents in particular areas. As evidenced at our recent Recognition and Presentation Day Assemblies, our students continue to experience success in many sporting, curricular, extra-curricular events. I look forward to seeing our 2017 HSC results and will be presenting an analysis of what I am sure will be excellent results in the first newsletter next year. I have already been informed of some top of the state results. Our 2017 NAPLAN results continue to be above state average, both in terms of achievement and growth, and I am particularly proud of the impact of our learning support team which has supported students to improve both their literacy and numeracy this year. Our Student Representative Council and leadership team under the stewardship of Fenella Palanca and Allan Tao have had a successful year of addressing issues around the school, planning for improvements and fundraising. They have established an excellent platform for the 2018 leadership team to bring a number of projects to future. Our P&C have done an outstanding job this year and I would like to thank the executive for the Audio Visual improvements to the hall as well as the stage apron which has made our hall a much better venue for official occasions and performances. The Band Committee and Cathy Miers in particular have done an exceptional job with the bands and have ambitious plans for 2018. An effective way to show your child that you are engaged with their education is to be part of the P&C. I urge you all to join our dynamic team and help to make a positive difference to our school. We have overcome many obstacles this year, but are all the stronger for it. I wish all our committee a restful and happy break and look forward to seeing you all in 2018. Mr S Dassaklis—Principal

Silver Picnic Report On the first of December, 2017, I went on my first Tempe High Silver Picnic ever. We had to turn up to school early but sat around for about half an hour and then left for Sydenham station. We boarded a train to Wolli Creek and then switched onto a train to Cronulla. We were finally on our way. The train trip took about 50 painstakingly boring minutes and once it was done, we were only halfway there. We had to catch a ferry to the beach which took 20 minutes to even arrive. The ferry was old, small and rocked so hard, we thought it was going to capsize but once we got to the beach, we knew it was all worth the wait. The beach was beautiful with clear water, great sand and it was almost totally deserted. Once we unpacked, changed and listened to the rules, we were finally ready to swim. We did a short swimming test to find out if we were confident swimmers and then we were allowed to go into the water. It was so nice and cool and I had fun splashing people. After that, I found a few hermit crabs and built them a prison with walls and moats surrounding them. Other people added to the hermit collection and soon we had a whole colony. After a few hours of this, we had lunch which was a sausage sandwich and a soft drink and we got seconds if we answered trivia questions from Mr Dassaklis. After lunch we had the choice to do some more swimming or to change. I changed and then sat around for a while until I saw people were going across the road to get gelato. I went with a few people and got a snickers gelato. Finally, it was time to leave and we walked back to the ferry stop. Waiting for the ferry we took a few photos until we saw the familiar old, small boat come round the corner. The rocking seemed even harder on the way back and we were scared for our lives until we made it back to the Cronulla train station. Tired, wet and cold, yet oddly satisfied; we made the arduous journey home. We all knew that the picnic was 100% worth the trip. by Sam Woodhouse—8Y

Year 7 and 8 Supporting Respectful Relationships On different days this term year 7 and 8 students were split into girls and boys groups to speak to them about respectful relationships. Topics that were covered were the anti-bullying policy and how to be an upstander rather than a bystander. Students were given strategies on how to support each other if they see bullying. The boys also spoke about what defines a strong man in this day and age while the girls tackled the topic of “Rights and Responsibilities as a 21

st Century Learner at Tempe High”.

There will be follow up workshops next year with year 8 into year 9 students doing workshops in term 1. The boys were asked to use their technology to contribute to a brain storm about words that could be used to define a strong man. You can see their responses in the screen shot below. The information appeared to be well received. Our Anti-bullying, mobile phone and discipline policies can all be found on our website. If you would like further information about the Department of Education’s response to Bullying you can see their website at https://antibullying.nsw.gov.au/

Open Girls’ Rugby 7s

Congratulations to the inaugural Tempe HS Open Girls’ Rugby 7s Team who finished 3

rd in the Shire 7s

Tournament on Friday 17 November at Port Hacking HS. In a field dominated by 17 year old girls our team comprised of students from year 8 to year 11 did their school proud by beating Kirrawee High School in the 3

rd place play off in hot conditions. The majority of the

team had never played before and their improvement throughout the tournament was exceptional; featuring exciting tries, big tackles and inspiring team work. In a squad full of great performances, Sieli and Daniela were voted by their peers as the players’ players. Hopefully this trailblazing performance will encourage more girls at Tempe HS to step outside their comfort zone and challenge themselves to trying new sports.
