From the Principal

At Tempe High School we are a proud Public School caring on a tradition of learning on this site since 1874. In 2019 we had over 950 students and 75 staff. We speak over 50 different languages with numerous religious and cultural backgrounds, 72% of our students come from non-English speaking backgrounds, including our Aboriginal and overseas students.

It is fair to say that we represent the cross section of our society and I am sure that our success is a result of our diversity.

In a broader sense our local public schools are the bedrock of our democracy

This year there have been many highlights.

Our junior students achieve growth at an above state average in Numeracy, Literacy and Science. I say growth because although we also are above average in attaining the top 2 band results too, growth is a better indicator of the impact that a school has. We have also shrunk the number of students performing in the lower two bands due to the superb work form all our staff and our learning support faculty in particular. At Tempe we pride ourselves on all students achieving their personal best, not just the highly academic ones. Additionally after reading all their reports I can attest that the vast majority of our students have performed well in classes and grown in their capacity to be creative and collaborate to complete assigned tasks.

3 of our year 10 students were ranked in the top 5 of the state in the VALID science test, sat for by over 30000 year 10 students. Sam Woodhouse was outright first in the state.

After Looking at our 2019 HSC results I can proudly say tonight that our year 12 have done exceptionally well in the HSC with 100 Band 6 performances and 82% 0f all our students attaining HSC Marks above 70, (50% above 80. )

We have not been content to see such results as an end in themselves. Our focus has remained on growing and improving. In previous years we invested significant funds in training all staff on how to better teach students with disabilities or English as a second language. This year, in collaboration with the University of New South Wales, we enhanced all teachers’ capacity to enrich the learning of our gifted students. Our teachers have embedded this training into their lessons and we are keen to see the impact of this in the coming years.

This year we have made significant strides in providing better amenities for our student to learn:

Year 12 Chill out Zone delivered by our year 12 parents

An Extra Science Laboratory paid for by Parent contributions and extra state funding.

Refurbishment of the Koori Room , now known as the Ngurra room

Investment in a new Music technology room

PE Storeroom on the Oval

New CNC Technology in TAS

Playground beatification

Administration Office revamp

We also have plans for next year to refurbish the library, Common room as well as returf and provide an irrigation system for the Oval. We have been successful in gaining a federal grant to put in enormous water tanks to assist us to harvest water. Additionally the outgoing year 12 parents from the P&C have attained a State Gov’t Grant of $35000 to continue the Health Hub Bus project.

I would like to thank all the staff of this school for their hard work this year and single out Ms Yin for her exceptional organisation of Presentation night. Our school student leadership team and SRC have been magnificent this year with more major projects on the cards for 2020.

Most importantly I would like to thank all our cares and parents for their support and urge you all to join our P&C and help us make a major impact on our students learning.

I look forward to 2020 and working with you in a school that remains passionately committed to providing the best possible learning environment for every student.

I wish you all a safe and happy festive season.

Tempe High School 2020 Whole School BYOD Program

Bring your own device (BYOD) is a system where students bring a computing device to school which they can connect

to the Tempe High network. This enables them to access cloud based programs such as Google Suite, Google

Classroom and Microsoft 365 in the classroom by logging in through their Education department portal. It will be

expected that in 2020 that all Tempe High School students will bring a computing device to school for learning.

The following procedures have been administered to improve the 2020 whole school transition to BYOD:

Year 7 (2020) will undertake digital citizenship lessons as part of the new PDHPE syllabus

Year 7 & 8 took part in a cyber safety workshop in Term 4

Years 7, 8 & 10 received and returned signed BYOD Agreement forms

THS Staff have taken part in training to implement devices as a learning tool in the classroom

This innovation is a big change for all members of our school community, if you have any concerns regarding BYOD

please contact the school.

HSIE FACULTY Tempe vs Wolli Creek On Wednesday the 4th of December Seven Yellow embarked on an adventure on foot equipped with clipboards in hand to determine the winner of the Tempe vs Wolli Creek Liveability Challenge. This Geog-raphy fieldwork excursion was designed to comple-ment our study of Place and Liveability in class. Our class was divided into five groups, with each group tasked with assessing and recording notes about a different category of liveability (Green Space, Roads, Education, Services and Housing) and giving them a score from 1-5 based on their aesthetic, safety, amount/quantity and cleanliness. This criteria was designed in class prior to the excursion. We began by walking down Unwins Bridge Road. This allowed us to assess the liveability of the roads and homes in Tempe. We eventually made it to Tempe Station which we again marked against our predetermined criteria of services. We ventured to Kendrick park, passing many homes and green spaces along the way providing us with valuable evidence to determine the liveability of Tempe. The class travelled over the Princess Highway Bridge until we were met by Tempe House. We sat and drew a sketch map of the landscape of Discovery Point Park, which included apartments and a playground filled with Green Space Factors (Trees, bushes, etc.) We continued along our journey until we eventually reached Wolli Creek passing Wolli Creek’s large train station and many multi storey apartments allowing us to make further progress on our liveability criteria. We then got to the town centre in Wolli Creek and took notes on the numerous services available to Wolli Creek residents like the supermarkets, beauty salons and eateries. The class was then provided with a much needed break in the town centre. Students quickly dispersed to purchase food and drinks and enjoy the town centre. After about fifteen minutes, we ended our break and made the long trek back to Tempe High School. We retraced our steps back through the town centre, down the Princes Highway and into Tempe along the train station and back through Unwins Bridge Road. In class, we were able to calculate our scores based on our observations of each suburb.

Overall, Wolli Creek was awarded a higher score compared to Tempe as Wolli Creek was generally cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing. It contained multiple services including a Train station, Markets, Apartments, etc. which Tempe seemed to lack. Further the roads and footpaths were wider and smooth while Tempe had narrow streets and footpaths filled with cracks, small - medium sized houses which seemed to look old and most of the streets contained rubbish. This trip was not only an enjoyable time away from school, but it also provided valuable insights to life and living in Tempe in Wolli Creek. by Charlotte Murden and Sarah Siafakas, 7Y
