Cantor’s NotesIn January, I led a group of 13 Temple Beth-El mem-

bers on a trip to Cuba. We were part of a larger group of sixty-eight people from congregations in New York and California, each led by their cantor. We spent a week in Cuba visiting the cities of Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, Trinidad and Havana. While the trip’s focus was to learn about the Jewish communities of Cuba, we spent time learning about Cuba in general, including the flourishing Fine Arts and culture.

Before I went to Cuba I really did not know much about the country. I knew the basics—Cuba is a communist coun-try, there are minimal relations between the United States and Cuba, it is difficult for Cubans to get various toiletries, medicines and foods, and there is poverty throughout the country because of government corruption. I expected to see destitution, unhappiness…

This was not my experience at all. Our trip had a Jewish focus but included general Cuba tourism as well. We visited four (out of at least eight) synagogues in Cuba and met with the leader of each, as well as the woman who is President of the entire Jewish community of Cuba. Each Jewish leader told a similar story: From the start of the Revolution through the fall of the Soviet empire, Cuba was an atheist nation where Fidel Castro banned all religious observance. Upon the Soviet collapse in 1991 restrictions were eased, Cuba became a secular nation, and religious observance was once again permitted. An entire generation of Jews grew up with no Jewish education and no observance of Jewish holidays.

In the second half of the twentieth century, Cuba’s Jewish population dwindled from about 20,000 to rough-ly 1,500. By the 1990’s, Cuba’s Jewish young adults who grew up post Revolution were Jewishly illiterate, but many yearned to rededicate themselves to Jewish learning and liv-ing. Thanks to the efforts led largely by the Joint Distribution Committee as well as Canadian and South American Jewish communities, much needed funds were donated to Cuba’s Jewish community to shepherd its revival. Rabbis and educa-tors from South America assisted in the efforts, and Cubans began to learn how to once again live and celebrate Jewishly.

Each of the smaller synagogues we visited has about 30 members, and Havana’s largest synagogue has several hundred. David Tacher, the leader of the Santa Clara Jewish community, spoke of how difficult it is to enlist people to help with the various tasks involved in running a synagogue. He said when you have only 25-30 people, and more and more people are leaving, it becomes harder to find volun-teers. And yet, even with the challenges the Cuban Jewish community has, they are proud and vibrant and find great importance in maintaining the Jewish community.

I hope to visit Cuba again in the future. I hope that you might consider visiting this beautiful country as well.

Rise Against Hunger It’s not too late to register to volunteer/donate to the

Rise Against Hunger event on February 3. This will be a congregational-wide community service event, helped led by our Confirmation Class of 5779. The event will take place from 12:30 to 2:30 pm, and lunch will be provided.

The more volunteers we get—the more food we can pack! If you would like to volunteer for and/or donate to Temple Beth-El’s Rise Against Hunger event, sign up online at https://tinyurl.com/tberah. For further information, contact Ross Halfant at [email protected] or 210-733-9135 ext 110.

» Girls–polo’s, black or white, small, medium, large, x-large

• School supplies–spirals, compositions, pens/pencils, markers, binders (various sizes), backpacks, notebook paper, etc.

• Donations for incentives (gift cards in small increments)

Keep the Temple InformedWe rely on our Temple members, their friends and family to let us know when someone is hospitalized or suffering any illness or bereavement, or would just enjoy a call or visit from the clergy or a member of the congregation. The clergy would also like to hear good news, such as celebrating a birth or other simchah. In order to better serve the congregation, please share this information with our clergy by calling Iris Berman-Smith at 210-733-9135 ext. 106. The patient or immediate family is often not able to make this call, so please let us hear from you.
