Deadline for items to be

is September 23, 2018.

Items submitted after

that time will be saved

for the next issue.

Pastor’s Pen: “As the World Turns”

True confessions. I never did watch “As the

World Turns,” but I was hooked on “All My Chil-

dren” back in the 70’s. When I took a break

from it and watched again in the 80’s, I was most

disappointed that the story line was virtually unchanged. It didn’t take

long for me to pick right up although several years had passed. The

drama between characters hadn’t changed. Erica Kane was still the

same Erica Kane. That was the last day I watched it. Life is full enough

for me without soap operas anyway!

Life marches on as the seasons change. From the hot days of summer

and summer vacations come the routine of school days. In a few days,

our preschool classrooms will be filled with tears of fear and giggles of

delight. The pitter patter of dozens and dozens of little feet, tangible

reminders of God’s creativity, will transform our quiet halls into sym-

phonies of wonder and joy.

As summer of 2018 is soon to be history, God’s activity in our midst is

not. And, if you were to ask me where I’ve experienced God lately, I

would say that I have seen Jesus in your faces and in the faces of the

children I’ve met. I have experienced the Holy in our worship services.

I have experienced the creativity of God through you in ministry

teams and various planning meetings. Whether it be in praying around

the bedside, laughing together with many of you, breaking bread to-

gether at the Lord’s Table or in the Fellowship Hall, God has been

most present in our midst! Each day as the world turns, we are

blessed with sunrise and sunset. Each day as the world turns, we have

signs all around us that point to the creativity of our awesome God.

Each and every day we have been gifted with the greatest gift ever—

God’s love. God’s love to share with others and God’s love to receive

for ourselves. (continued on page 8)

It’s back to school time! Temple Preschool begins September 4th. We are looking forward to another great school year. We have a lot of fun and learning in store for the kids. Our teachers are excited to welcome back returning students and a lot of new faces too. We welcome Amy Rogers and Heather Nees to our staff this year. They

substituted last year and became part of the family with ease. Many thanks go out to those of you who were here with us during the Summer Mom’s Day Out program. The summer session is always fun and joining in with Vacation Bible School is something the kids enjoy each year. We’d added some new playground equipment this summer and the kids have had a blast. We are very blessed to have the help of our board members who are church members. Chris Young, Alison Breiding and Bonnie Finley are helping us again this year. We are also welcoming Gari Kenworthy to the board. Thank you for volunteering your time. We are excited to get to know Pastor Rebecca and we’re looking forward to Time with Pastor each month with the preschoolers. I also want to thank Sandra Small and Myrna Rose for volunteering at some of our annual events. It’s nice to have a welcoming face from the church present. Thanks also to Sara Donker for making the Preschool Church Sing Sunday School activities fun for the kids that attend in November and February. Check back to see a little of what’s happening in our preschool each month in your Temple Tower! Janet Friedrich Temple Preschool Director

Good news update from the Finance Chair, Dick Vining

The wheel will no longer be used during services. It has outlived its usefulness. I

feel the program has put everybody on track to giving for the purposes of reducing

our building debt.

Our current debt is $202,000 as of August 31st. Thanks be to God!

Hopefully, we are all in the habit now of giving from your heart into the special enve-

lope each Sunday which goes 100% to reducing the principal of our loan.

Retiring this debt will allow us to expand our giving to God’s work and the ministry

of United Methodist Temple.

Remember, Jesus loves a giving heart.

(Continued from page 1)

Let me encourage you to invite a friend, a neighbor, a family member to come with

you to church on September 16th. Now in its 10th year, “National Back to Church

Sunday,” is designed for people to come back to church, to the place where they be-

long, where they can be a part of a larger group of people who love God and love

each other. A place where they can serve and continue in bringing the Kingdom of

Heaven here on earth.

Let me also encourage you to make worship a priority, a regular part of your sched-

ule. As we worship, we are reminded of God’s love. As we worship, we are renewed

in what really matters. As we give of ourselves—our time, talent, and treasure in the

worship of the One who created us and in whose lives we move and have our be-

ing—our hearts are re-calibrated and our priorities are realigned.

I look forward to seeing you in worship … and in serving with you.

God is good. All the time!

Your partner in ministry,

Pastor Rebecca

Cash donations are always welcome, too! For more information go to the following website: https://www.samaritanspurse.org There will be more information at the Welcome Desk and in the Narthex. The boxes have to be ready to be shipped in early November.

From Our Missions Team The Missions Team would like to thank everyone who participated in The Helping Hands mission outreach. We thank you for your prayers, food, and physical labor. All involved had a good time of fellowship while being the hands and feet of Christ! We would encourage you to remember this ministry when you have clothing and small household items to donate.

This page is geared toward bringing more kids and families into our church. In order to make this happen and be successful, we ALL have to be willing to

work together. See some opportunities listed below:

KIDSHOPE USA

We will begin our mentoring year with 15 mentors in September.

If you are interested in helping a child one hour a week, contact

Jill at the church.

UPCOMING DISCIPLESHIP EVENTS:

FRIDAY NIGHT AFTER LIGHTS- September-October

Our kids from age 6 and up are invited to come and hang out with Jill and friends on

the 2nd Friday of the month (6:30 – 8:00 pm) during the Backyard Barbeque

Cookouts. Food will be provided, as well as games and fun!! Bring a friend or two

(or more), your own games if you want, and come hang out!

NEW ADULT BIBLE STUDY OPPORTUNITY—Come and Join Us! Our new Bible Study will begin on Wednesday, October 10th, at 10:00 am in the

Sunshine room. It will last for 6 weeks (through November 14th). I have 14 partici-

pants so far. If you are still considering joining us, please let me know so that I can

order the correct number of books.

Amy-Jill Levine, author and professor at Vanderbilt University, has a six (6)

week study called Short Stories by Jesus The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial

Rabbi. Jesus knew that in order to get his message across to first century Jews, he

had to tell stories that related to a very different world than the one in which we live

today. It will take you back in time and explain how original audiences understood

Jesus’ parables. You’ll learn how new interpretations of the parables continue to

challenge contemporary readers.

PRAYING CIRCLES AROUND YOUR CHILDREN
